The aim of this paper is to use cognitive approach in order to discuss the topic of memory in Iain Banks’s “Use of weapons.” I argue that Banks presents memory as a creative faculty of the human brain which is inherently connected with imagination, identity-shaping processes and narrative construction. In this essay, I analyse the workings of memory, as well as its social and cultural functions, as presented in “Use of weapons.”

The article offers a brief overview of the most prominent landmarks in the development of Cognitive Linguistics. It starts with the very inception of the field in the late 70s as a strong reaction against a doctrine of generative linguistics dominating at that time. Later the paper describes the cornerstone theories which were at the onset of this linguistic enterprise. From the very beginning the movement was rather diverse and still cannot be defined as one unified theory; however, there has always been one common factor in its approaches which is the centrality of meaning in language study. The works of the second wave of cognitive linguists, which are also outlined in the article, focused even more increasingly on cognitive functions providing insights into the nature and organization of human thoughts. Nowadays the postulates of Cognitive Linguistics are applied not only to all levels of language study but extended to other scientific areas.

The article discusses cognitive poetics as an important theoretical framework in contemporary literary studies, in the context of the publication of the second, revised edition of Peter Stockwell’s Cognitive Poetics: An Introduction (2020). First, the authors discuss critical comments put forward by scholars with respect to Stockwell’s earlier studies in cognitive poetics, and next, from a literary-studies perspective they carry out an overall assessment of the revisions and modifications introduced in the book’s current edition. Irrespective of some critical remarks, there is no doubt that thanks to the changes, the inspirational value of Stockwell’s book has been enhanced.

In perspective of the ongoing debate about the ranges of media studies, the paper proposes paying closer attention to the important fi eld of research, which is the media education. The paper quotes Polish and international defi nitions of this concept, emphasizes its various aspects and shows the evolution of the term together with an indication of possible empirical analysis. Location of media education in McQuail’s three traditions of media analysis is accompanied by examples of recent research in this area. Methodological suggestions are also presented, namely stemming from cognitive science and developing brain research. As a sum up, the paper proposes an original defi nition of media neuroeducation. The trial to locate the proposed research fi eld in the existing paradigms of media education was also taken, along with identifying the holistic approach to integrate physiological and social variables.

In this situation many doubts are raised by methodology used in training studies, especially poorly matched control groups, and inadequate monitoring of the placebo effect. In this article I will present the most important issues and challenges facing today’s research on computerized cognitive training.

This paper introduces my concept of cognitive equivalence (cf. Mandelblit, 1997), an attempt to reconcile elements of Nida’s dynamic equivalence with recent innovations in cognitive linguistics and cognitive psychology, and building on the current focus on translators’ mental processes in translation studies (see e.g. Göpferich et al., 2009, Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, 2010). My approach shares its general impetus with Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk’s concept of re-conceptualization, but is independently derived from findings in cognitive linguistics and simulation theory (see e.g. Langacker, 2008; Feldman, 2006; Barsalou, 1999; Zwaan, 2004). Against this background, I propose a model of translation processing focused on the internal simulation of reader reception and the calibration of these simulations to achieve similarity between ST and TT impact. The concept of cognitive equivalence is exemplarily tested by exploring a conceptual / lexical field (MALE BALDNESS) through the way that English, German and Japanese lexical items in this field are linked to matching visual-conceptual representations by native speaker informants. The visual data gathered via this empirical method can be used to effectively triangulate the linguistic items involved, enabling an extra-linguistic comparison across languages. Results show that there is a reassuring level of inter-informant agreement within languages, but that the conceptual domain for BALDNESS is linguistically structured in systematically different ways across languages. The findings are interpreted as strengthening the call for a cognition-focused, embodied approach to translation.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is without doubt a popular science-fiction novel, which has inspired many generations of artists and creators in popular culture and mass culture. It has also become an inspiration for scientific studies in the field of robotics and cybernetics. Modern cognitive sciences are looking for the perfect pattern that will allow artificial intelligence to be achieved. An important problem for scientists was the lack of full knowledge about consciousness. We are able to recreate the structure of the human body in a machine, but we are not able to fully simulate the neural processes that would create human consciousness. This problem is perfectly illustrated by cultural works, including literature and cinematography. We see in them both the emanations of the motifs contained in Shelley’s novel and the realization of scientific hypotheses that shape our image of a conscious, thinking machine.

Opis:
The paper aims to grasp a contemporary phenomenon known as depression from another, i.e. spiritual angle. The experience described by a Carmelite monk and  mystic John of the Cross as “dark night” requires  a new scientific panorama with reference to contemporary mental disorders. It constitutes a highly complex physical, mental and spiritual phenomenon. Therefore, it cannot be defined without in-depth, credible, responsible and well-justified interdisciplinary research. In this paper, we propose a new model of diagnosis, therapy and treatment of the “liminal spaces” states regarded as depression with the use of quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods and tools  in social sciences and humanities, including digital humanities and applied linguistics. Further research may and should lead to a common model developed also with  medical scientists. We also see a great and very promising potential of our model developed together with the achievements of medical informatics, narrative and translational medicine and translational sciences in general.
Nie można go jasno zdefiniować bez dogłębnych, odpowiedzialnych i interdyscyplinarnych badań naukowych. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiamy naszą wstępną propozycję nowego modelu diagnozowania, terapii i leczenia stanów określanych jako depresja przy zastosowaniu badań jakościowych i ilościowych z zastosowaniem nauk metod i narzędzi nauk społecznych i humanistycznych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jezykoznawstwa stosowanego. Dalsze badania mogą i powinny doprowadzić do wspólnego modelu opracowanego też z naukowcami z obszaru medycyny oraz szeroko pojętych nauk kognitywnych. Dostrzegamy też ogromny potencjał naszego modelu wraz ze zdobyczami  informatyki medycznej w obszarze medycyny translacyjnej.

The article presents the results of research conducted in the master degree thesis, prepared at the Institute of Theory of Literature, Theatre and Audiovisual Arts, University of Lodz, under the supervision of prof. Assoc. Jarosław Płuciennik. First I present a theoretical and methodological frame of analysis of the text (especially taken form cognitive psychology of concepts: category, categorization, prototype and similarity), the second I present interpretation of terminology in relation to the concept genre and based on it doing a cognitive analysis such categories as: epic poem, heroic poetry or monk heroic poetry, based on Trans-Atlantyk by Witold Gombrowicz. The summary is an attempt to reference the conclusions derived from the analysis to the debate on the nature of the two aestethic categories – ‘style’ and ‘stylization’. These concepts are not – I suppose – immanent properties of the text, but mental constructs, first existing on mind of cognizing person. The cognitive methodology allows this aspect capture and describe.

Opis:
Describing an algorithm can provide a formalization of a specific process. However, different ways of conceptualizing algorithms foreground certain issues while obscuring others. This article attempts to define an algorithm in a broad sense as a cultural activity of key importance to make sense of socio-cognitive structures. It also attempts to develop a sharper account on the interaction between humans and tools, symbols and technologies. Rather than human or machine-centered analyses, I draw upon sociological and anthropological theories that underline social practices to propose expanding our understanding of an algorithm through the notion of ‘collective intentionalities’. To make this term clear, a brief historical review is presented, followed by an argumentation on how to incorporate it in an integral perspective. The article responds to recent debates in critical algorithm studies about the significance of the term. It develops a discussion along the lines of cognitive anthropology and the cognitive sciences, therefore advancing a definition that is grounded in observed practices as well as in modeled descriptions. The benefit of this approach is that it encourages scholars to explore cognitive structures via archaeologies of technological assemblages, where intentionalities play a defining role in understanding socio-structured practices and cognitive ecologies.

Opis:
The article focuses on a summary of the studies on the Late Palaeolithic assemblages of the Swiderian culture with so called Mazovian double platform cores. The author made an attempt to understand the above-mentioned technology as a part of current thinking in technological studies. The author’s reflection was made according to the Polish tradition of the studies of the production process as a part of R. Schild’s dynamic technological classification, itself based on S. Krukowski’s scientific achievements. The author’s intention was that current studies were a post-processual variant of so-called “in depth reading” based on a procedure of studying concept, methods and techniques. Products of the idealized concept of the core shaping process were compared to sequences of products that were made during correcting and repairing a surface. As a result, a dynamic picture was obtained of the interactions between changes in the angles and shape of the surface of the worked stone, as well as the producer’s actions necessary to make blades that have specific features. Conducted studies helped in formulating a list of the product categories that arise during the formation of surface shape and that favour obtaining straight blades with pointed butts and sharp tips. The main element of the suggested idea of classification is a division of the lithic core products into predetermining and predetermined. These terms are derived from semiology studies and they form the concept basis for future studies of specific assemblages of the artefacts. The conducted research provided an explanation for the presence of the large amount of blades in the Late Palaeolithic working sites. Blade production should be perceived not only as solely an utilitarian activity related to tool production. This issue requires further study as a part of the current thinking as well as in terms of the communication process and semiology.

The article comments on the ninth Polish translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, by Elżbieta Tabakowska. As the key to the analysis of this translation, the present author has chosen the relations between the text and image, especially the illustrations by sir John Tenniel and Tove Jansson. As opposed to previous translators or Alice in Wonderland, Tabakowska’s attempts to modernise the book to make it more accessible for 20th-century readers, and more compatible with 20th-century illustrations. In the edition discussed here, it is actually possible to discern two translations, translation proper and and an intersemiotic one, because illustrations by the author of Moomin books introduce connotations which would be totally alien to 19th-century girls. Through analysis of specific translation choices, the article underlines the strengths of the newest translation, such as its competent Polish, the wealth of Polish contexts, the educational role of exoticisation, and the retained principle of double reception. The article, however, also points out to certain weaknesses of the translation. Anna Rogulska also notices that, because the represented world is deeply rooted in the culture of Victorian England, the text cannot by fully rendered in the 21st century. Another interpretative key for the reading of the newest Polish edition of Carroll’s book is cognitive linguistics, which is the academic specialisation of the translator. The article demonstrates that the function of the new translation was not only a contribution to the long series of Polish renditions of Alice in Wonderland, but also a practical application of cognitive science in literature, which makes the translation valuable not only for children’s literature, but also for scientific inquiry.

There is a mismatch between social and biological approaches in the studies on sex and gender. Neurofeminist researchers critically examine gendered impacts of research in neuroscience and cognitive science, as well as develop more adequate and gender‑appropriate neuroscientific studies. However, they still seem to be focused on the brain and its relationship with the environment. Moreover, there are a little ‘science‑phobic’ feminist approaches based on actor‑network theory, and social science and technology studies. In this context, I would like to suggest another account of gender. My account is not centered on individual selves, minds or brains, but it is based on concept of distributed cognitive system and cultural ecosystem developed in the cognitive science. The potential integrational role of the approach seems worthy of attention. On the one hand, there are no contradictions between more important assumptions of distributed cognition theory and social studies. On the other hand, it is not necessarily limited to human beings and their minds. I pay particular attention to distinction between the distributed cognition theory and the extended mind theory. Ones of the most important elements of the ‘gender‑sensitive’ distributed system are artifacts and their affordances, most of all — cultural and canonical ones. In this light, the gender relations seem not only distributed, but also able to be designed.
