In the paper an effective entropy coder designed for coding of prediction errors of audio signals is presented. The coder is implemented inside a greater structure, which signal modeling part is a lossless coding backward adaptation algorithm consisting of cascaded Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), three Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS), and prediction error bias correction sections. The technique performance is compared to that of four other lossless codecs, including MPEG-4 Audio Lossless (ALS) one, and it is shown that indeed, on the average the new method is the best. The entropy coder is an advanced context adaptive Golomb one followed by two context adaptive arithmetic coders.

Optimal random network coding is reduced complexity in computation of coding coefficients, computation of encoded packets and coefficients are such that minimal transmission bandwidth is enough to transmit coding coefficient to the destinations and decoding process can be carried out as soon as encoded packets are started being received at the destination and decoding process has lower computational complexity. But in traditional random network coding, decoding process is possible only after receiving all encoded packets at receiving nodes. Optimal random network coding also reduces the cost of computation. In this research work, coding coefficient matrix size is determined by the size of layers which defines the number of symbols or packets being involved in coding process. Coding coefficient matrix elements are defined such that it has minimal operations of addition and multiplication during coding and decoding process reducing computational complexity by introducing sparseness in coding coefficients and partial decoding is also possible with the given coding coefficient matrix with systematic sparseness in coding coefficients resulting lower triangular coding coefficients matrix. For the optimal utility of computational resources, depending upon the computational resources unoccupied such as memory available resources budget tuned windowing size is used to define the size of the coefficient matrix.

Opis:
Limitations on memory and resources of communications systems require powerful data compression methods. Decompression of compressed data stream is very sensitive to errors which arise during transmission over noisy channels, therefore error correction coding is also required. One of the solutions to this problem is the application of joint source and channel coding. This paper contains a description of methods of joint source-channel coding based on the popular data compression algorithms LZ'77 and LZSS. These methods are capable of introducing some error resiliency into compressed stream of data without degradation of the compression ratio. We analyze joint source and channel coding algorithms based on these compression methods and present their novel extensions. We also present some simulation results showing usefulness and achievable quality of the analyzed algorithms.

In the new HEVC standard, there are 35 intraframe prediction modes. Therefore, real-time implementations need fast mode pre-selection to reduce the computational load of cost comparison for individual modes. In this paper, a simple technique is proposed to reduce the complexity of the Unified Intra Prediction by decreasing the mode candidate number evaluated in the Rough Mode Decision step. We call this approach hierarchical as we decrease stepwise the angles between the directions of the prediction modes that are tested. Obviously, the fast mode selection results in significant complexity reduction obtained at the cost of choosing a sub-optimum mode related to slightly reduced compression performance. In the paper, it is proposed how to calculate the trade-off between encoder complexity and compression performance, using the ratio of relative coding time reduction and average bitrate increase estimated for constant decoded video quality. Extensive experiments prove that this ratio is much higher for the proposed technique than for many other techniques from the references.

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a 23-item scale preliminarily entitled the “Elementary Student Coding Attitudes Survey” (ESCAS) from a Rasch perspective. The ESCAS includes five latent constructs to assess attitudes: coding confidence, interest, utility, perceptions of coders, and social value using Item Response Theory [IRT]. The item summary statistics, person summary statistics, item misfit statistics, and category structure statistics were examined for each component. In examining the five constructs separately, the measure had above average psychometric properties with no misfitting items and higher internal-consistency reliability.

Opis:
Kodowanie VLC (ang. Variable Length Coding) jest odmianą kodowania entropijnego. W różnych odmianach występuje ono w wielu standardach kompresji wideo. W niniejszej publikacji opisany zostanie algorytm kodowania VLC stosowany w kompresji DV, oraz następujący po nim etap formowania skompresowanego segmentu wizji. Zaproponowana zostanie koncepcja implementacji dekodera VLC w układzie reprogramowalnym, realizująca wszystkie trzy etapy, z uwzględnieniem aspektów wykorzystania w sprzętowym dekoderze.
VLC coding (Variable Length Coding) is one of entropy type coding. With different modifications it is used in many video compression standards of both moving and still images, e.g. JPEG, MPEG-2, DV (IEC 61834). In the paper the VLC coding algorithm used in DV as well as a consecutive compressed video data forming phase together with the macroblock compressed area built in this process are described in details. This phase is performed in three stages, each on different data granularity, which generates some constraints with regard to FPGA implementation. In the paper there are presented experimental results which show that stages 2 and 3 have an influence on the higher overall quality of the decompression. The previous works [3][4] were focused on the first, or on the first and second decoding stage. There is described the concept design of VLC decoder implementation in a reprogrammable chip, realising all three stages in compliance with the IEC-61834 standard when taking into account reusing it in a hardware DV decoder as a processing element in the pipeline architecture.

Novel ideas for lossless audio coding analyzed in the paper are linked with forward predictor adaptation, and concern optimization of predictors on the basis of zero-order entropy and MMAE criterions, and context sound coding. Direct use of the former criterion is linked with exponential growth of optimization procedure, hence, a suboptimal algorithm having polynomial complexity is proposed. It is shown that on average the new types of predictors are better than those obtained by MMSE technique, while two- and three context systems are on average better than a single predictor one. It also appears that 7-bit PARCOR coefficients in the MPEG-4 ALS standard have insufficient precision for some predictor length, and that for very long frames coding results improve with the predictor rank practically in unlimited way.

In the paper, results of experimental research on wavelet video codec are presented. The author has put emphasis on the optimal selection of the coder parameters to optimize the coding time. The author has used six test sequences (Basket, City, Crew, Harbour, Ice and Soccer in 352x288, 30 fps) for the experiments. The sequences used in the research are commonly used to assess the effectiveness of video sequence compression. The measurement of the image quality is based on the PSNR. The results of optimal selection of wavelet video codec parameters due to the coding time are presented. The main goal of the paper is to show the coder parameters that provide the best values of the PSNR for a reduced coding time.

Focus Construction in Yoruba language and its dialects has attracted the attention of many Yoruba scholars. But to the best of our knowledge, none has investigated this phenomenon in Èkìtì and Oǹdó dialects. This forms the focus of this paper. The data collection relies on the informants who are native speakers of the two dialects. They are between ages 60 to 80 and they have spent almost their life-times in the selected dialect communities. Descriptive approach is adopted for the discussion. Findings reveal that although, the two dialects belong to different Yoruba major groups; Central Yoruba and Southeast Yoruba, there are some similarities and differences in the syntax of the two dialects. These similarities and differences can mostly be reflected on their focus constructions. The concern of this paper is to consider the similarities and differences between the focus constructions in the two dialects.

This paper summarizes recent research on network-on-multi-chip (NoMC) at Poznań University of Technology. The proposed network architecture supports hierarchical addressing and multicast transition mode. Such an approach provides new debugging functionality hardly attainable in classical hardware testing methodology. A multicast transmission also enables real-time packet monitoring. The introduced features of NoC network allow to elaborate a model of hardware video codec that utilizes distributed processing on many FPGAs. Final performance of the designed network was assessed using a model of AVC coder and multi-FPGA platforms. In such a system, the introduced multicast transmission mode yields overall gain of bandwidth up to 30%. Moreover, synthesis results show that the basic network components designed in Verilog language are suitable and easily synthesizable for FPGA devices.

Opis:
This paper presents a method of limiting the effect of ambient temperature drift on the measurement uncertainty of a time counter (TC). A change in ambient temperature causes a change in the TC transfer function, i.e. the widths of quantization steps to be exact. Recalibration is a procedure that is then required, but it disturbs the measurement process. However, with the knowledge of the current ambient temperature and having the set of transfer functions identified at different temperatures, it is possible to determine and use the most adequate transfer function and virtually eliminate the temperature impact. For this purpose, three interpolation methods were studied: the nearest neighbor method, linear and polynomial interpolations. A newly evaluated transfer functions were tested in interpolating TC to select the best interpolation method.

Small bacterial RNAs (sRNAs) regulate translation by pairing with complementary sequences in their target mRNAs, in a process which is often dependent on the Hfq protein. Here, the secondary structure of a 95-nt long fragment of Salmonella fadL mRNA containing RybB sRNA binding site in the coding region was analyzed. The data indicated local rearrangements in this mRNA structure after the annealing of RybB. The filter retention data had shown that Hfq bound both RybB and the fadL mRNA fragment with tight affinities. Moreover, Hfq increased the rate of RybB annealing to fadL mRNA. These data indicate that Hfq directly participates in RybB interactions with the fadL mRNA.

The text is devoted to the evolution of construction law in the period of the Second Polish Republic as one of the tools of the broadly understood policy of the State. The basic research problem is the rationalization of regulations and their functioning in the legal system. The analysis allowed us to formulate research conclusions. The policy regarding construction law and spatial development in the Second Polish Republic was subordinated to the overarching goals, i.e. the unification of regulations in the country and building the image of a strong state by organizing space. In terms of specific objectives, the evolution of the law was aimed at rationally increasing the amount of affordable housing, strengthening co-responsibility of private entities for spatial development, smart management of available resources, and intensive support for new housing.
