Opis:
This article is on the comparison of two biblical manuscripts of the twelfth century from Plock, namely the so-called Bible of Plock and Evangeliar of Princess Anastasia with two Mosan biblical manuscripts: Evangeliar of Averbode and the Biblia Universa transcribed in the same period. The first three texts: Beatissimo Papae Damaso (Novum opus), Prologus quatuor evangeliorum (Plures fuisse) and Iheronimus Damaso Pape (Sciendum etiam) – the last one is not in the Bible of Plock - and Evangeliar of Princess Anastasia are of St. Jerome. In contrast, the introduction to the Synoptic Gospels: Argumentum secundum Matheum, Prologus in Marco and Prologus sancti Evangelii secundum Lucam are not the texts of St. Jerome, as is sometimes mistakenly repeated by different scholars, but belong to Sedulius Scottus, an Irish monk and poet who lived and worked in a school in Leodium in the ninth century, and the introduction to the Gospel of John: Prephatio in Evangelium secundum Iohannem was written by Bede the Venerable. While the texts of Jerome were quite commonly used in biblical medieval manuscripts, the fact that the introductions to the Synoptic Gospels are written by Sedulius Scottus and are present in both the Bible of Plock as well as partially in Evangeliar of Princess Anastasia is a very strong argument for the Mosan origin of the biblical manuscripts of Plock from the twelfth century. Comparative analysis of the texts themselves clearly leads to several important conclusions. First, the Bible of Plock and Evangeliar of Princess Anastasia are closer to the version of the text preserved in the Biblia Universa, a codex written in the monastery of Sancti Trudonis, than to Evangeliar of Averbode. It follows that the sources for the biblical manuscripts of Plock from the twelfth century should be searched at Mosan Benedictine monasteries, perhaps in the very monastery Sancti Trudonis near Liège. Second, the Gospel of Mark generally follows the version of the text preserved in the Biblia Universa and the Bible of Plock but not all the time. It should therefore be hoped that further comparative studies, especially the version of the biblical text, would confirm this relationship and will help determine whether the codex was written in the Mosan region or is a copy of the Bible of Plock made on the spot. Thirdly, and this is an extremely interesting proposal, Evangeliar of Princess Anastasia, not counting minor copyist changes like the conversion of - tium to - cium, is very much dependent on the Bible of Plock. If, as it is confirmed by records of the miracles, the Bible was already in Plock in 1148 or before that date, it is very likely that Evangeliar of Princess Anastasia, would be a copy of the text made on the spot in a local Plock scriptorium as a foundation of Boleslaw Kedzierzawy and a votive offering for the salvation of his deceased wife Anastasia. The codex would therefore arise after her death, dating back to the year 1158 in Plock in the time of Bishop Werner and would not have been brought by him following his trip to Aachen. These conclusions, for obvious reasons, are only preliminary, as comparsion of the texts are not fully detailed and fuller conclusions will be presented only after benchmarking a version of the biblical text of the four Gospels.

The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed analysis of huactli, the bird which played, almost exclusively, the role of the secondar y patron of the thirteenth trecena or thirteen-day period ce olin (1 Earthquake) of tonalpohualli, the ritual calendar of Central Mexico. As the second patron of this trecena, the huactli bird represented Tezcatlipoca, “the Smoking Mirror”, a well-known Mesoamerican trickster. In the study, as far as possible, all information concerning the bird will be collected, beginning with his graphic representations in the calendarical codices, which later will be confronted with the mentions of huactli in alphabetical sources. Given that the bird ́s laughing and the mocking function of Tezcatlipoca seem to have strong links in the Nahua culture, an attempt will be made to approach the tricksterian role of this deity during toxcatl festival, in the banquets in honor of Omacatl and, finally, in the my ths from Tula.

The article publishes for the first time the famous Canons of Eusebius of Cesarea transmitted in medieval codex called Evangelarium Anastasiae. The copmarison between the Canons of Eusebius transmitted in Evangelarium Anastasiae and in the famous Bible of Płock confirm the strict dependance between those two codexes. Thanks to two notes on the miracles which took place in the cathedral of Płock in 1148 and have been described in the Bible of Płock we know that the Bible should have been in Płock in this time, so it seems reasonable to suppose that also Evangelarium Anastasiae would have been transcribed in the local scriptorium in the middle of XII century.

Text discusses the Anonymus de rebus bellicis (DRB) - written in late 4th or early 5th century - proposals concerning the necessity to reform the ambiguity of  law (DRB XXI). Author gathers opinions of modern scholars about the value, limits and influence of DRB XXI in the matter of so called codification of Roman law in Late Antiquity, adding to it his own interpretation of its text (with first Polish translation of the fragment by dr Anna Kotłowska, IH AMU Poznań). He deduces that DRB was the isolated petition of private citizen, and his ideas concerning the reform of leges and iura had no ties with project of Theodosian Code or other initiatives to order Roman law in the period. Author concludes that the main value of DRB XXI is the idea of improvement of law by emperor as a way to make better the internal state affairs, what was unfamiliar to contemporaries before writing of this treatise.

The main objective is to determine whether information derived from the above sources is congruent and whether it coincides with the current notions about these women. Moreover, special attention is paid to certain roles played by the elderly Maya women, which distinguish them from other female members of the community and, at the same time, bring them almost on a par with men.

In 1945 Wilhelm Schubart published two papyri in the Festschrift for Leopold Wenger. In the the present paper (in two subsequen parts) I wish to offer their re-edition and a new commentary to both of them. Among other things, their new dating has been established to ad 450–500. Because they deal with completely different subjects, it is assumed here that they belonged to two different codices, contrary to Schubart’s opinion, who believed that they are part of one and the same manuscript. P. 16977, edited in the first part of the paper, originates from Eastern Roman leagal teaching practice. It is a fragment of a Greek index lecture about two Diocletianic codes. Greek indices were concise sum- maries of Latin legal texts, intended especially for law students who did not know Latin. The present fragment deals with nine constitutions about non numerata pecunia, ‘the lack of payment for a credit’. One constitution is taken from the Hermogenian Code, the remaining ones from the Gregorian Code. Four of them are completely or partly preserved in the Justinianic Code (CI. 4, 30, 4–7). Keywords: juristic papyrology, legal literature, teaching Roman law in Greek, index lesson, Codex Gregorianus, Codex Hermogenianus, exceptio non numeratae pecuniae, Hermopolis Magna.

In 1498 some monks from the Kiev Pechersk Lavra came to Grodek to found a monastery, which was later transferred to Suprasl. The co-founders of this initiative were Alexander Khodkevich and the bishop of Smolensk, Joseph Soltan. At the beginning of the XVI century there were 40 monks. In 1505 the patriarch of Constantinople, Joachim confirmed the foundation of the monastery and of its church in a special tomos. Gradually the monastery was granted with lands and villages, acquired an important role among the monasteries of the country, maintained contacts with Mount Athos and other centres of religious life. It became itself a centre of theological thought. The monastery was famous also for its library and scriptorium. The founders of the monastery believed that copying, ornamentation and biding the books should be one of the principle works of the monks. With the time the library of the monastery acquired more and more books, among others also very rare manuscripts and parchment codices. It contained religious books (liturgical books, lives of the saints) as well as historical and chronicle materials. In 1823 Michael Bobrovsky, while making research on the collection of the library, found among the ancient books an XI century Cyrillic manuscript in Old Church Slavonic – the Chetnaya Menea for March. The volume was afterwards called Codex Suprasliensis after the place were it was found. The codex consists of 285 pages and contains 24 lives of the saints, 20 homilies of St. John Chrysostom as well as those of St Basil the Great, Photius and Epiphanius of Cyprus. There is no precise information concerning the place, time and author of the manuscript. Several theories though exist concerning when and how the codex arrived in the Suprasl monastery: it was a gift from the founder of the monastery, Alexander Khodkevich; it was brought from Mount Athos, Kiev Pechersk Lavra or a Bulgarian monastery; it was brought to the monastery at the time of its foundation; came in 1505 together with the tomos of the patriarch of Constantinople, Joachim; was given by the metropolitan Joseph Soltan during the consecration of the Annunciation church in 1511; arrived before 1532; was brought by Kievan ob Bulgarian monks before 1557; was offered in 1582 by the Serbian and Bulgarian patriarch Gabriel; was given by the patriarch of Constantinople Jeremiah II in 1589; was brought to the monastery after 1557, before 1645 and remained there in 1668. The analysis of its copies and the notes written on it allows to follow the journey of the Codex Suprasliensis. Some of the theories are more probable than others, still the scientists cannot come up with one definite version of how and when the Chetnaya Menea came to the Suprasl monastery.

Prof. Edward Potkowski, died on July 31st 2017, paid particular attention to registration and detailed documentation of the manuscripts - created in Poland, written by the Poles abroad, for the Polish readers, or being held within the territory of Poland - both in Polish and foreign collections. He used to say, that we would not develop a complete image of the book culture of medieval ages in Poland without studies on the books permanently or temporarily stored in foreign institutions. This is also the topic of E. Potkowski’s text offered within this volume. He discusses examples of three books: the Mikołaj Suled’s Codex he found himself in Naples (Italy), the Mathilda’s Codex, and the Sankt Florian Psalter. Their complicated history proves the need of developing a central catalogue of medieval manuscripts related to Poland, for further studies on the Polish medieval culture.

When occasionally addressing a potential reader, he most certainly had the clergy in mind. The selection of writings copied by Jakub allows us to see him as an advocate of the idea of Church reform, especially in the area of a renewal of the moral life of the clergy, an idea which was popular in the 15th century.

This article brings together the arguments surrounding this debate during the compilation of the Codex of 1983 – a debate which extended until right up to the final moments of the codification. The opinions of the contributors to the Code were varied and the debate was long and profound. Thirty years later it appears that the problems that were debated then continue to exist today.
