Variations in the hydrodynamic conditions were studied on the basis of 336 days of measurements with a Doppler current profiler. With wave data as a calibration reference, a semi-empirical hindcast of wave parameters is presented in the fetch- limited near-shore area for the period 1966–2008. A resultant 4–6 cm s−1 westward current dominated along the coast. Occasional fast sub-surface westward currents under modest wind forcing, as well as asymmetrical vertical profiles for westward and eastward currents indicated the influence of upwelling-related baroclinic coastal jets. The average frequency of upwelling was estimated at 17%; some of the events were identified in near-homothermic winter conditions on the basis of salinity and multi-layer flow records. While the mean sea level trend at Narva-Jõesuu roughly approximated the global estimates for 1899–2009, the annual maximum sea level increase was 5–8 mm yr−1. Both mean and maximum wave heights declined as a result of decreasing winds from the north.

The paper provides a simple and analytical method which can be used to give estimates of the wave-induced bottom shear stress for very rough beds and mud beds in shallow water based on wind statistics in deep water. This is exemplified by using long-term wind statistics from the northern North Sea, and by providing examples representing realistic field conditions. Based on, for example, global wind statistics, the present results can be used to make estimates of the bottom shear stress in shallow water.

Water satisfies human needs in many ways. Without water, life is not possible in this planet. According to the estimation of the WHO, 4,000 children die every day from water-borne diseases and this condition is worst in developing and under-developed countries. Water-borne diseases are caused by the consumption of contaminated water. Indeed, it is the main agent of transference of the pathogens causing these diseases. The main objective of this paper is ‘to identify the water-borne diseases and their challenges and to suggest remedial measures to overcome the challenges in the study area’. Both primary and secondary data were used to conduct this study and the analysis of this study is tabulated clearly in the data analysis part. The coastal areas of Ampara District (Sainthamaruthu, Karaitivu, Maligaikadu Mawadipalli, Akkaraipattu, Irakkamam, Varipathanchenai, Addalaichenai, Palamunai, Oluvil and Nintavur) face a lot of challenges induced by water-borne diseases. Viruses, bacteria, parasites and protozoa are the main pathogens. Bacillary dysentery (shigellosis), cholera, other diarrheal diseases, hepatitis A and E and typhoid fever were identified as the most common diseases in these areas. The causes for the diseases are the contamination of water by improper drainage management, effluent contamination of water sources, over population and the lack of awareness among residents about water-borne diseases. According to the result of this study, controlling water contamination, constructing water purification systems, mending existing drainage systems, following instructions when constructing latrines, examining and remediating contaminated wells and providing awareness among residents are ways to attain the objectives.

This paper presents the results of an attempt to reproduce, with the aid of a numerical circulation model, the hydrological conditions observed in the coastal area of the southern Baltic in September 1989. A large fall in surface layer seawater temperature was recorded in September 1989 at two coastal stations in the vicinity of Kołobrzeg and Władysławowo. This upwelling-like phenomenon was assumed to be related to the specific anemobaric situation in September 1989, however typical of this phenomenon to occur along the Polish Baltic coast (Malicki & Miętus 1994). A three-dimensional (3-D) σ-coordinate baroclinic model of the Baltic Sea, with a horizontal resolution of ∼5 km and 24 sigma-levels in the vertical, was applied to investigate water circulation and thermohaline variability. Hindcast numerical simulation showed that the model provided a good reproduction of the temporal history of the surface seawater temperature and the duration of the upwelling-like fall, but that the model results were underestimated. The maxima of this large fall in the surface layer temperature at both coastal stations are closely related to the phase of change of the upwelling-favourable wind direction to the opposite one. The results of simulation runs showed details of upwelling development due to wind field fluctuations in time and differences in shaping the temperature and current patterns in conjunction with the variations in topography and coastline features in some areas along the Polish coast. Two different hydrodynamic regimes of water movements along the coast resulting from topographical features (the Słupsk Bank) can be distinguished. From the model simulation the specific conditions for the occurrence and development of upwelling at the eastern end of the Polish coast (in the vicinity of Władysławowo) can be deduced.

A three-dimensional baroclinic σ–coordinate model was applied to study the circulation and thermohaline variability in the coastal zone in the south-eastern Baltic Sea. The model is based on the Princeton Ocean Model code of Blumberg & Mellor (1987), known as POM, and has the horizontal resolution of ∼5 km and 24 σ-levels in the vertical. The hydrodynamic conditions and variability of water and salt exchange between the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Baltic Proper, and the renewal of water masses in the Gulf of Gdańsk due to atmospheric forcing are analyzed. The numerical simulations were performed with real atmospheric forcings as well as with homogeneous (spatially uniform) wind fields over the whole Baltic Sea. The numerical simulations showed that the atmospheric forcing (winds) can play a significant role in shaping the renewal of bottom saline waters in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Two regions of inflow/outflow of saline waters responsible for the salinity regime were located. The overall water exchange between the Gulf and the Baltic Proper as well as the exchange of saline bottom waters appear to be strongly dependent on wind conditions. The net flux of water of salinity >9 PSU is of the order of 48 000–100000 m3 s−1. SE, E, S and NE winds were found to exert the greatest influence on salinity conditions in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Estimates of saline (salinity >9 PSU) water residence time based on the model simulation yielded values from 46 days for SE winds to 153 days for NW winds.

Saltwater intrusion in the rapidly developing city of Da Nang in central Vietnam is currently causing various water-related challenges, including inadequate water supply and water pollution. An integrated SWAT-MODFLOW numerical model was used to investigate the origin and mechanism of saltwater in Holocene and Pleistocene aquifers. Geophysical and isotopic approaches were used to validate the SEAWAT model applied for simulating saltwater intrusion. The results suggest that the ebb and flow of tides, as well as water levels in rivers primarily impact coastal aquifers. However, effective water resource planning and management, along with maintaining the natural recharge of fresh water from local rain during the rainy season, could enable the rational and efficient utilization of groundwater, reducing saltwater intrusion in many areas. During the dry season, groundwater is recharged from higher altitude areas. The current saltwater intrusion mainly occurs along the rivers up to the hydraulic dam. Simulated models, using scenarios of stop abstracting groundwater, but changing to the use of surface water for drinking water, show that the area of saline water shrinks quickly after 30 years, reducing from 59.6 km2 to 39.5 km2 and from 40.2 km2 to 28.6 km2 in the Holocene and Pleistocene, respectively.

The standard exponential model for CDOM absorption has been applied to data from diverse waters. Absorption at 440 nm (ag440) ranged between close to zero and 10 m−1, and the slope oft he semilogarithmic absorption spectrum over a minimum range of400 to 440 nm (s440) ranged between <0.01 and 0.04 nm−1. No relationship was found between ag440 or s440 and salinity. Except in the southern Baltic, s440 was found to have a broad distribution (0.0165 ± 0.0035), suggesting that it should be introduced as an additional variable in bio-optical models when ag440 is large. An alternative model for CDOM absorption was applied to available high quality UV-visible absorption spectra from the WisGla river (Poland). This model assumes that the CDOM absorption spectrum comprises distinct Gaussian absorption bands in the UV, similar to those ofb enzene. Five bands were fit to the data. The mean central energy ofal l bands was higher in early summer (E ∼7.2, 6.6, 6.4, 6.2 and 5.5 eV or 172, 188, 194, 200 and 226 nm) than in winter. The higher energy bands were found to decay in both height and width with increasing salinity, while lower energy bands broadened with increasing salinity. s440 was found to be correlated with shape parameters of the bands centred at 6.4 and 5.5 eV. While the exponential model is convenient for optical modelling and remote sensing applications, these results suggest that the Gaussian model offers a deeper understanding ofc hemical interactions affecting CDOM molecular structure.

Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea is a serious problem, and as such it is frequently raised in relevant literature, where potamic supply of nutrients is implicated as one of the causes. Coastal waters like the Puck Lagoon, an area protected within the Natura 2000 network, as well as watercourses in adjacent Coastal Landscape Park, are particularly vulnerable to such degradation. Hence, the aim of our study, which was to determine the volume and fluctuations of transported total nitrogen and phosphorus. Another objective was to try and relate these changes to the transport of nutrients and runoff in streams flowing through Coastal Landscape Park into the Puck Lagoon (the Płutnica, Potok Błądzikowski, Gizdepka, Reda, Zagórska Struga) and into the Baltic Sea (the Piaśnica, Karwianka, Czarna Wda). This research drew on field investigations and laboratory assays performed in the hydrological year of 2009, and had been designed accordingly, including measurements of the flow rate in the selected watercourses and water sampling for further chemical analyses, including determinations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus. In brief, the highest average annual flow rate and load of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were found in the Reda and Piaśnica. The largest load variation, of both nitrogen and phosphorus, occurred in the Zagórska Struga. In most of the watercourses, the load of biogenic substances was strongly correlated with the flow, but the actual power of correlation depended on a stream and biogenes. The strongest statistical relationships for both tested substances (r > 0.8) occurred in the Potok Błądzikowski, Reda, Zagórska Struga and Czarna Wda. The Płutnica was an exception in that there were no statistically significant relationships between the water flow and the load of nutrients. However, the low value of the relationship determined suggests that we should view that series with some caution.

Eutrophication in two different coastal areas — the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic) and the Oslofjord/Drammensfjord (Norway) — both subject to human pressure and with restricted water exchange with adjacent seas, was investigated and compared. Sediment cores (up to 20 cm long) were collected at 12 stations using a core sampler, 6 in each of the two areas, and divided into sub-samples. The physicochemical parameters characterizing the adjacent water column and near-bottom water, i.e. salinity, oxygen concentration and temperature, were measured during sample collection. Chlorophylls-a, -b and -c, their derivatives and selected carotenoids were determined for all the samples, as were additional parameters characterizing the sediments, i.e. Corg, Ntot, d13C and d15N, grain size. 210Pb activity was also determined and on that basis sediment mixing and accumulation rates were estimated. The distribution of pigments in sediments was related to environmental conditions, the sampling site location and sediment characteristics. The results are in agreement with other observations that eutrophication in the Gulf of Gdańsk has increased, especially since the 1970s, whereas in the Oslofjord it decreased during the same period. The pigments are better preserved in inner Oslofjord sediments than in those from the Gulf of Gdańsk. The results demonstrate that the sum of chloropigments-a insediments calculated per dry weight of sediments is a valuable measure of eutrophication, providing that the monitoring site is selected properly, i.e. sediments are hypoxic/anoxic and non-mixed. Besides, the results confirm previous observations that the percentages of particular chlorophyll-a derivatives in the sum of chloropigments-a are universal markers of environmental conditions in a basin. The ratios of chloropigments-b and chlorophylls-c to the sum of chloropigments-a (SChlns-b/ SChlns-a; Chls-c/SChlns-a) may by applied as complementary markers of freshwater and marine organic matter input, respectively.

In the Baltic Sea, summer blooms of the filamentous, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena are favoured by high P concentrations at low N:P ratios and a salinity range of 5–13 PSU. The blooms are initiated by calm and sunny weather, an elevated surface water temperature and thermal stratification. The mass occurrence of N. spumigena in coastal waters is a matter of special concern, as the cyanobacterium produces nodularin, a potent pentapeptide hepatotoxin. In the Gulf of Gdańsk, the large-scale occurrence of N. spumigena was recorded for the first time in 1994. Blooms of a similar intensity occurred in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Nodularin concentrations in freeze-dried bloom samples varied from 0.01 to 4.01 mg g−1 d.w. In the coastal waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk, cell-bound nodularin concentrations in 2004 and 2005 attained maxima of 25 852±107 μg dm−3 and 3964±125 μg dm−3, respectively. Microscopic analysis revealed the presence of diverse Nodularia forms, with the dominance of curved filaments in bloom samples. The results of in situ studies and remote sensing measurements indicate a high frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms in the Gulf of Gdańsk in the last ten years.

High-latitude fjords, very vulnerable to global change, are impacted by their land and ocean boundaries, and they may be influenced by terrestrial water discharges and oceanic water inputs into them. This may be reflected by temporal and spatial patterns in concentrations of biogeochemically important constituents. This paper analyses information relating to the total suspended matter (TSM) concentration in the Porsanger fjord (Porsangerfjorden), which is situated in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. Water samples and a set of physical data (water temperature, salinity, inherent optical properties) were obtained during two field expeditions in the spring and summer of 2014 and 2015. Bio-optical relationships were derived from these measurements, enabling optical data to be interpreted in terms of TSM concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability of TSM concentration, which was strongly influenced by precipitation, terrestrial water discharge and tidal phase. Spatial distribution of TSM concentration was related to the bathymetry of the fjord, dividing this basin into three subregions. TSM concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 0.132 g m−3 at the surface (0–2 m) and from 0.5 to 0.67 g m−3 at 40 m depth. The average mineral fraction was estimated to be 44% at surface and 53% at 40 m.
