    Radioactive contamination of the environment means a higher concentration of radioisotopes with regard to background level. Undoubdtedly, the incidental or permanent emissions of radionuclides to the environment are the sources of radioactive pollution. In this connection the diversity of radioisotopes distribution in nature can be observed. The key aim of the presented work was to ascertain the presence of radioactive elements and their decay products in the environment. Nuclides were emitted by selected conventional coal-fired power plants located in the south of Poland. The samples from the neighbourhood of three power plants and a sample from “clean” territory were measured. Additionaly, we measured the concentration of 137Cs istotope descended from the Chernobyl disaster.

    W opracowaniu przedstawiono problematykę przeciwdziałania awariom przemysłowym. Skoncentrowano się na branży energetycznej. Przybliżono strukturę wytwarzania energii w Polsce. Zaprezentowano proces wytwarzania energii elektrycznej w konwencjonalnej elektrowni węglowej. Na podstawie analizy literaturowej i studium przypadków zidentyfikowano jedną z najczęstszych przyczyn awarii w elektrowniach węglowych – wybuch pyłu węglowego – i w tym aspekcie zaproponowano zastosowanie analizy drzewa błędów FTA. Rozwiązanie to ma na celu przedstawienie błędów w prawidłowym funkcjonowaniu instalacji elektrowni, co pozwala zidentyfikować zdarzenia podstawowe i pomaga dobrać prawidłowo zabezpieczenia, które mogą w rozpatrywanej sytuacji przeciwdziałać wskazanemu zdarzeniu.
    The paper presents the problem of preventing industrial failures. The study focuses on energy industry. The structure of energy production in Poland has been reviewed and the process of production of electricity in the conventional coal-fired power plant has been presented. Based on the literature analysis and case study, coal dust explosions have been identified as one of the most common reasons of failure in coal-fired power plants – and in this aspect the proposal to use FTA fault tree analysis has been offered. The aim for this solution is to present errors in the correct functioning of power plant installations which allows to identify basic events and helps to correctly select security measures that may counteract the indicated event in the considered situation.

    The surface properties of particles emitted from six selected coal-fired power and heating plants in Poland have been studied in this work for the first time. Samples were collected beyond the control systems. Surface composition of the size-distributed particles was obtained by photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The reflection of the smallest, submicron particles was also measured to calculate their specific/mass absorption. The surface layer of the emitted particles was clearly dominated by oxygen, followed by silicon and carbon. The sum of the relative concentration of these elements was between 85.1% and 91.1% for coarse particles and 71.8–93.4% for fine/submicron particles. Aluminum was typically the fourth or fifth, or at least the sixth most common element. The mass absorption of the submicron particles emitted from the studied plants ranged from 0.02 m2g-1 to 0.03 m2g-1. Only specific absorption obtained for the “Nowy Wirek” heating plant was significantly higher than in other studied plants probably because the obsolete fire grate is used in this heating plant. The obtained results suggest that the power/heating-plant-emitted fine particles contain less carbonaceous material/elemental carbon on their surfaces than those that are typical in urban air.

    The ever-increasing demand for electricity and the need for conventional sources to cooperate with renewable ones generates the need to increase the efficiency and safety of the generation sources. Therefore, it is necessary to find a way to operate existing facilities more efficiently with full detection of emerging faults. These are the requirements of Polish, European and International law, which demands that energy facilities operate with the highest efficiency and meet a number of restrictive requirements. In order to improve the operation of steam power plants of electric generating stations, thermal-fluid diagnostics have been traditionally used, and in this paper a three-hull steam turbine, having a high-pressure, a medium-pressure and a low-pressure part, has been selected for analysis. The turbine class is of the order of 200 MW electric. Genetic algorithms (GA) were used in the process of creating the diagnostic model. So far, they have been used for diagnostic purposes in gas turbines, and no work has been found in the literature using GA for the diagnostic process of such complex objects as steam turbines located in professional manufacturing facilities. The use of genetic algorithms allowed rapid acquisition of global extremes, that is efficiency and power of the unit. The result of the work undertaken is the possibility to carry out a full diagnostic process, meaning detection, localization and identification of single and double degradations. In this way 100 % of the main faults are found, but there are sometimes additional ones, and these are not perfectly identified especially for single time detection. Thus, the results showed that with a very high success rate the simulated damage to the geometrical elements of the steam turbine under study is found.

    In this study, contamination of potentially toxic elements (Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Hg and Pb) and species dominant in the fish community of Lake Kenon – Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch 1782) and Perca fluviatilis (Linnaeus 1758) – were investigated. Chemical elements in samples were determined by atomic emission spectrometry (iCAP-6500, Thermo Scientific, USA) and mass spectrometry (X-7, Thermo Elemental, USA). It was reported that water in Lake Kenon contained low concentrations of the studied metals. The bottom sediments are enriched with Mn, Zn, Hg and Pb. Bioaccumulation factors of chemical elements accumulated from the surrounding water for P. fluviatus and C. auratus gibelio in descending order are as follows: Zn > Pb > Hg > Cu. P. fluviatus accumulates Hg in equal measure from both water and bottom sediments. Manganese and mercury are accumulated in the muscles of C. auratus gibelio from bottom sediments. The high accumulation ratio of Zn and Hg in C. auratus gibelio was obtained from Chara sp. (24 times) and Chironomus spp. (38 times), respectively. High accumulation ratio of Zn (26 times) and Hg (29 times) in P. fluviatus was obtained from amphipods. At the same time, Hg in P. fluviatus muscles was accumulated at high level from Chironomus spp. (67 times). In this way, management decisions for mitigation practices in Lake Kenon should be focussed on for the disposal of wastewater from the ash dump contaminated with chemical elements.

    The paper presents a thermal-economic analysis of different variants of a hard coal-fired 900 MW ultra-supercritical power unit. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the parameters of live and reheated steam on the basic thermodynamic and economic indices of the thermal cycle. The subject of the study was the cycle configuration proposed as the "initial thermal cycle structure" during the completion of the project "Advanced Technologies for Energy Generation" with the live and reheated steam parameters of 650/670 [degrees]C. At the same time, a new concept of a thermal cycle for ultra-supercritical parameters with live and reheated steam temperature of 700/720 [degrees]C was suggested. The analysis of the ultra-supercritical unit concerned a variant with a single and double steam reheat. All solutions presented in the paper were subject to a detailed thermodynamic analysis, as well as an economic one which also included CO2 emissions charges. The conducted economic analysis made it possible to determine the maximum value of investment expenditures at which given solutions are pro.table.

    W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy opłacalności wytwarzania energii elektrycznej dla elektrowni jądrowej i dwóch elektrowni węglowych: elektrowni opalanej węglem kamiennym i elektrowni opalanej węglem brunatnym. Wszystkie trzy badane elektrownie charakteryzowały się podobną mocą elektryczną (elektrownia jądrowa mocą elektryczną 1000 MW, obie elektrownie węglowe mocą elektryczną 900 MW), takim samym stopniem wykorzystania zdolności produkcyjnych (95%), taką samą dyspozycyjnością (95%) i taką samą liczbą godzin pracy w ciągu roku (7906 h/rok). Analizę opłacalno?ci ekonomicznej badanych inwestycji energetycznych przeprowadzono na podstawie rachunku przepływów pieniężnych, z wykorzystaniem zasad rachunku dyskonta. Opłacalność ekonomiczną przeprowadzono na bazie zdyskontowanych metod zysku, takich jak NPV - wartość bieżąca netto, NPVR - wskaźnik wartości bieżącej netto, IRR - wewnętrzna stopa zwrotu, DPB - zdyskontowany okres zwrotu nak?adów inwestycyjnych oraz dodatkowo obliczono SPB - prosty okres zwrotu nak?adów inwestycyjnych. Na podstawie obliczonych wartości NPV,NPVR, IRR, DPB, SPB określono, która z badanych inwestycji jest najbardziej opłacalna dla przyjętych założeń. W przypadku wartości NPV otrzymane wyniki dodatkowo poparto obrazem graficznym - wykresami, przedstawiającymi zależność NPV w funkcji czasu. Na podstawie powyższych wykresów określono wartości SPB (prosty okres zwrotu nakładów inwestycyjnych) i DPB (zdyskontowany okres zwrotu nakładów inwestycyjnych). SPB określono wyliczając wartość NPV dla stopy dyskonta równej zero, DPB określono dla stopy dyskonta równej założonej stopie dyskonta równej 7,5%. W obu przypadkach na wykresach zaznaczono wartości SPB i DPB szukając miejsc przecięcia charakterystyk NPV z osią czasu. Obliczenia przeprowadzono wielowariantowo. Jako wariant bazowy przyjęto inwestycję, która w 20% była finansowana ze środków własnych, a w pozostałych 80% finansowana była z kredytu bankowego. W przypadku kredytu założono, że bank udzielił kredytu preferencyjnego o oprocentowaniu 6 % w skali roku, a czas spłaty kredytu założono równy 20 lat. Poza wariantem bazowym przeanalizowano dwa inne warianty. Pierwszy z nich to przypadek, gdzie inwestycja w 40% była finansowana ze środków własnych, a w 60% z kredytu. Kolejny wariant to przypadek, gdzie inwestycja była w 100% finansowana ze środków własnych.
    This article presents the results of a profitability analysis of electrical power generation by a nuclear power plant and two coal power plants, a hard coal-fired power plant and a brown coal-fired power plant. All three analysed plants are characterized by similar output capacity (the nuclear power plant offers a capacity of 1000 MW while both coal power plants have a capacity of 900 MW), the same extent of generation capacity usage (95%), the same availability (95%), and the same number of working hours during a year (7906 hrs/year). The economical profitability analysis of the examined energy investments has been carried out based on cash flow statements, using the principles of discount account. The profitability has also been calculated based on discounted profit methods such as NPV (Net Present Value), NPVR (Net Present Value Ratio), IRR (Internal Rate of Return), DPB (Discounted Payback), and SPB (Simple Payback). The most profitable of the potential investments has been determined based on the calculated values of NPV, NPVR, IRR, DPB, and SPB using the adopted assumptions. In the case of NPV, the results are additionally supported by a graphic image (diagram) presenting the NPV correlation as a time function. SPB and DPB values have been defined based on the above diagrams. SPB has been defined by calculation of NPV for a discount rate equal to zero, and DPB has been defined for a discount rate equal to the assumed discount rate of 7.5%. In both cases, the SPB and DPB values have been indicated on the diagrams in order to find intersections of NPV with the time axis. The calculations have been performed in a multi-variant format. The basic variant was an investment where 20% was financed with its own funds and the remaining 80% by a banking facility. In the case of credit, an assumption was made that the bank had granted a subsidized loan with annual interest rate of 6%, and the repayment term was assumed to be 20 years. Apart from the basic variant, two other variants have been analysed. The first was the case of an investment where 40% was financed with its own funds and 60% through borrowing. The next variant was the case of an investment which was 100% financed with its own funds.

    The paper presents a thermodynamic optimization of 900 MW power unit for ultra-supercritical parameters, modified according to AD700 concept. The aim of the study was to verify two optimisation methods, i.e., the finding the minimum of a constrained nonlinear multivariable function (fmincon) and the Nelder-Mead method with their own constrain functions. The analysis was carried out using IPSEpro software combined with MAT-LAB, where gross power generation efficiency was chosen as the objective function. In comparison with the Nelder-Mead method it was shown that using fmincon function gives reasonable results and a significant reduction of computational time. Unfortunately, with the increased number of decision parameters, the benefit measured by the increase in efficiency is becoming smaller. An important drawback of fmincon method is also a lack of repeatability by using different starting points. The obtained results led to the conclusion, that the Nelder-Mead method is a better tool for optimisation of thermal cycles with a high degree of complexity like the coal-fired power unit.

    Według definicji Międzynarodowej Agencji Energii bezpieczeństwo energetyczne to ciągłe dostawy energii po akceptowalnych cenach. Krajowa energetyka oparta jest w głównej mierze na własnych surowcach energetycznych takich jak węgiel kamienny i brunatny. Produkcja około 88% energii elektrycznej z tych kopalin daje nam pełną niezależność energetyczną, a koszty produkcji energii z tych surowców są najmniejsze w stosunku do innych technologii. Energia wyprodukowana z węgla brunatnego charakteryzuje się najniższym jednostkowym kosztem technicznym wytworzenia. Polska posiada zasoby tych kopalin na szereg dziesiątków lat, doświadczenie związane z ich wydobyciem i przeróbką, zaplecze naukowo-projektowe oraz fabryki zaplecza technicznego produkujące maszyny i urządzenia na własne potrzeby, a także na eksport. Węgiel jest, i winien pozostać, w Polsce przez najbliższe 25–50 lat istotnym źródłem zaopatrzenia w energię elektryczną i ciepło, gdyż stanowi jedno z najbardziej niezawodnych i przystępnych cenowo źródeł energii. Kontynuacja takiej polityki może być zachwiana w okresie następnych dekad, z powodu wyczerpywania się udostępnionych zasobów węgla tak brunatnego, jak i kamiennego. Uwarunkowania dla budowy nowych kopalń, a tym samym dla rozwoju górnictwa węgla w Polsce, są bardzo złożone zarówno pod względem prawnym, środowiskowym, ekonomicznym, jak i wizerunkowym. Z podobnymi problemami borykają się Niemcy. Pomimo iż wizerunkowo jest to kraj inwestujący w odnawialne źródła energii, uchodzący za pionierów produkcji energii z OZE, to w rzeczywistości podstawowymi nośnikami służącym do produkcji energii elektrycznej wciąż są węgiel, a przede wszystkim węgiel brunatny.
    According to International Energy Agency (IEA) energy security is the continuous supply of energy at acceptable prices. National energy is based primarily on its own energy resources such as hard coal and brown coal. The 88% of electric energy production from these minerals gives us full energy independence. Additionally, the energy production costs from these raw materials are the lowest compared to other technologies. Of these two, the energy produced from brown coal is characterized by the lowest unit technical generating cost. Poland has the resources of these minerals for decades to come, the experience related to mining and processing them, scientific and design facilities and technical facilities and factories producing machines and equipment for their own needs, as well as for export. Coal is and should remain an important source of electricity and heat supply in Poland for the next 25–50 years. It is one of the most reliable and profitable energy sources. This policy may be difficult in the next decades due to the exhaustion of the available resources of hard and brown coal. The conditions for the construction of new mines, and thus for the development of coal mining in Poland, are very interdisciplinary in legal, environmental, economic and reputational terms. Germany has similar problems. Despite the fact that it is an image of a country investing in renewable energy sources, which are pioneers of energy production from RES, in reality hard and brown coal are still the primary sources utilized to produce electric energy.

    Zasady inżynierii ekologicznej zastosowano w modernizacji budowanej Elektrowni Opole, wraz z nowoczesnymi instalacjami ochrony środowiska. Zmodernizowany projekt poddano „Kompleksowej ocenie oddziaływania Elektrowni Opole na środowisko” opracowanej w 1981 r. przez Instytut Ochrony Środowiska. Główne treści oceny zreferowano i przedyskutowano na krajowym sympozjum naukowym z udziałem społeczności opolskiej, zorganizowanej przez Polskie Towarzystwo Inżynierii Ekologicznej 5 i 6 czerwca 1992 r. Głównym celem sympozjum było wyspecyfikowanie i w miarę wszechstronne przeanalizowanie ekologicznych uwarunkowań projektowania, budowę i eksploatowania elektrowni węglowych. Celem wtórnym, ale pierwszoplanowym dla aglomeracji opolskiej było przeanalizowanie wieloczynnikowego wpływu budowy i eksploatacji Elektrowni na przyrodnicze i społeczne środowisko. Przyznanie Elektrowni „Opole” S.A certyfikatu zgodności systemu zarządzania środowiskowego z normą ISO 14001 nadanego przez British Standards Institution, dowiodło zasadności kontynuowania budowy zakładu energetycznego spełniającego wymogi 21 wieku. Zaawansowana budowa dwóch kolejnych bloków o łącznej mocy 1800 MW w Elektrowni Opole S.A. dowodzi merytorycznej zasadności i skuteczności seminarium z roku 1992.
    Principles of ecological engineering were applied for upgrading the Opole Power Plant under construction, complete with modern installation to protect the environment. The modernized project was a subject of „Integrated environmental impact assessment of the Opole Power Plant” developed by the Institute of Environmental Protection in 1981. The main issues covered by the impact assessment were presented and discussed at the national scientific conference attended, among others, by the representatives of local community from Opole. The conference was organized by the Polish Society of Ecological Engineering on June 5 and 6, 1992. The main aim of the conference was to identify and deliver as broad as possible analysis of environmental conditions for designing, building and operating coal fired power plants. A secondary goal, though of main concern for the Opole agglomeration, was to evaluate many-sided environmental risks resulting from the construction and operation of the Power Plant. The feasibility of continuing the construction of a power generating facility that meets the requirements of the 21st century was demonstrated by the fact that the Opole Power Plant S.A. was awarded the ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System certificate by the British Standards Institution. Advanced construction of the two consecutive blocks of a combined power of 1800 MW in the Opole Power Plant substantiates the validity and effectiveness of the conference organized in 1992.

Zmieniająca się rola Chin w globalnych mechanizmach zarządzania klimatem w coraz większym stopniu przykuwa uwagę społeczności międzynarodowej. W marcu 2021 r. Chiny przedstawiły 14. Plan Pięcioletni na lata 2021–2025, który określił, w jaki sposób ta największa światowa gospodarka i jednocześnie największy światowy emitent gazów cieplarnianych zamierza zrealizować cel osiągnięcia zerowej emisji netto do 2060 r. W artykule skonfrontowano obecny proces dekarbonizacji z celami energetyczno-klimatycznymi uwzględnionymi w 14. Planie Pięcioletnim. Analizie poddano środki działania, jakie Chiny zamierzają podjąć w związku z realizacją celu neutralności węglowej do 2060 r.
    Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our planet in the 21st century, having a significant impact on ecosystems, economies, and communities. It poses a significant long-term threat which demands international cooperation to combat global warming, while achieving sustainability. In this regard, the changing role of China in the global climate governance mechanisms has increasingly become a focus of international attention. In March 2021, China released its 14th Five-Year Plan for 2021–2025, which presented few details on how this global economic superpower and the largest global greenhouse gases emitter would meet its target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060. The paper describes the current decarbonization process in accordance with the targets of the 14th FYP regarding climate and energy. It also discusses how the measures of the 14th FYP are connected with China’s ambition to become carbon-neutral by 2060.

    W artykule przedstawiono informacje o współczesnych tendencjach w ewolucji technologicznej weglowego bloku kondensacyjnego. Jego dalsze doskonalenie wymaga prowadzenia rozległych badan naukowych. Scharakteryzowano cele i główne tematy badawcze sformułowane i podjęte w projekcie strategicznym Zaawansowane Technologie Pozyskiwania Energii, głównie w zadaniu 1: Opracowanie technologii dla wysokosprawnych „zero- -emisyjnych” bloków węglowych zintegrowanych z wychwytem CO2 ze spalin. Jego głównym celem jest: a) opracowanie metod, technologii i programów zwiekszenia efektywnooci energetycznej i ekologicznej wytwarzania energii elektrycznej i ciep3a w elektrowniach i elektrociepłowniach weglowych oraz podwyższenie ich niezawodnooci i dyspozycyjności, b) opracowanie dokumentacji technologicznej układów stanowiących podstawę do budowy krajowych instalacji demonstracyjnych wychwytu ze spalin oraz bezpiecznego sk;adowania CO2, c) opracowanie dla warunków krajowych strategicznych kierunków rozwoju czystych technologii weglowych do zastosowan w energetyce, w tym bloków 50+. Rozwiązywane zadania badawcze ujeto w siedmiu grupach tematycznych. Omówiono kierunki wzrostu sprawnooci bloków kondensacyjnych. Szczegóowiej w artykule przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badan dotyczące możliwości wykorzystania ciepła odpadowego spalin oraz suszenia wegla brunatnego dla zwiększenia sprawności bloku. Rozpatrzono wykorzystanie ciepła odpadowego do podgrzewania kondensatu w regeneracji niskoprężnej oraz do zasilania obiegów ORC (dla wegla kamiennego i brunatnego) i do podsuszenia wegla brunatnego. Obliczenia wykonano dla bloku referencyjnego o mocy 900 MW. Stwierdzono wzrost sprawności instalacji we wszystkich przypadkach. Najwiekszy efekt daje zastosowanie technologii podsuszania węgla. Osobnym zagadnieniem rozpatrywanym w artykule jest wpływ energochłonności procesu wychwytu dwutlenku wegla na degradację sprawności. Stwierdzono istotny spadek sprawności przy wykorzystaniu pary z obiegu cieplnego jako noonika ciepła do procesu desorpcji. Obliczenia wykonano dla różnej energochłonnooci jednostkowej procesu desorpcji.
    This paper presents information on current trends in the technological evolution of the coal-fired condensing power plant. A further improvement in the design of this plant calls for extensive scientific research. The paper describes the main research objectives and topics formulated and initiated within the Strategic Research Programme – Advanced technologies for obtaining energy, mainly in Task 1 – Development of a technology for highly efficient zero-emission coal-fired power units integrated with CO2 capture from combustion gas. The main aim of this task is as follows: a. to develop methods, technologies and programmes resulting in an increase in energy- and ecology-related efficiency of the production of electricity and heat in coal-fired electric and thermal-electric power stations, as well as resulting in an improvement in their reliability and availability; b. to develop technological documentation of systems that will become a basis for the construction of national demonstration installations for the capture of CO2 from flue gases and its safe storage; c. to work out Poland-specific directions for further development of clean coal technologies to be used in the power industry, including 50+ units. The research tasks are included in seven thematic groups. The paper outlines trends in improving the efficiency of condensing power plants. In more detail, it presents selected results of research on the possibilities of using flue gas waste heat and brown coal drying to raise power plant efficiency. An analysis is carried out of the use of waste heat to heat the condensate in low pressure regeneration, as well as to feed Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC’s) (for hard and brown coal) and to dry brown coal. The calculations are performed for a 900 MW reference cycle. An improvement in the system efficiency is found in all the cases under analysis. The most effective is the application of the coal drying technology. A separate issue considered in the paper is the impact of consuming the energy needed for the carbon dioxide capture process on plant efficiency degradation. A substantial decrease in efficiency is found if the thermal cycle steam is used as the heat carrier for the desorption process. The calculations are performed for different values of the unit energy consumption of the desorption process.

    Polskie technologie wytwarzania elektryczności wykorzystują głównie paliwa kopalne. Mimo istotnego wzrostu zainstalowanej mocy ze źródeł odnawialnych, stanowi ona nadal ponad 90% całego wolumenu wytwarzanej elektryczności. Drugą istotną charakterystyką infrastruktury wytwarzania jest zaawansowany wiek przeważającej liczby bloków (zwłaszcza bloków 200 MW). W stadium realizacji są obecnie cztery bloki na węgiel kamienny o mocy rzędu 1000 MW, jedna jednostka 500 MW na węgiel brunatny jest planowana. Rachunek ekonomiczny pokazuje, że dla tych bloków inwestycja ma swe uzasadnienie przy cenie elektryczności 240 270 zł/MWh. Obserwacja cen hurtowych wskazuje natomiast, że są one istotnie niższe, z ciągłą tendencją do spadku, (rys. 4) (www.ure.gov.pl). Rodzi to wątpliwości co do zasadności – z ekonomicznego punktu widzenia przy obecnych cenach węgla – wprowadzania do systemu nowych bloków dużej mocy. W konsekwencji wskazano na celowość poszukiwań innych rozwiązań pomostowych. Jednym z nich jest przedłużenie eksploatacji istniejącej infrastruktury bloków 200 MW. W artykule przedstawiono przesłanki do podjęcia programu modernizacji i rewitalizacji bloków klasy 200 MW celem przedłużenia ich eksploatacji do 2035–2040 r. Wskazano na podstawowe problemy konieczne do rozwiązania dla spełnienia przez nie odpowiednich kryteriów ekologicznych (w tym konkluzji BAT) i technologicznych (głównie dotyczących zwiększenia elastyczności cieplnej). Naszkicowano zakres badań naukowych i przemysłowych.
    Polish power technologies mainly use fossil fuels. Despite a significant increase in the installed capacity from renewable sources, it still makes up more than 90% of the total volume of the electricity produced. Another important characteristic of the generation infrastructure is the advanced age of the majority of the blocks (especially 200 MW). At the stage of implementation are currently four coal-fired blocks with a capacity of approximately 1000 MW. Morever one lignite unit of 500 MW is planned. Economic calculations show that the investment for these blocks is justified by the price of electricity PLN 240–270 / MWh. The observation of the wholesale price indicates, however, that they are significantly lower, with the continuous trend of decline (fig. 4). This means that the introduction of new blocks of high-power to the system at the current price of coal is rather unjustified. Consequently, it pointed to the desirability of other technological solutions. One of them is the extension of the operation of the existing infrastructure by 200 MW. The article presents evidence to undertake a program of modernization and revitalization of the 200 MW class units for the extension of their use to 2035–2040. The fundamental problems needed to be resolved for the fulfilment of appropriate environmental criteria (including BAT conclusions) and technological ones (mainly increase the flexibility of the heat) have been specified. The paper also outlined the scope of scientific research and industrial applications.
