The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is now available. It provides policymakers with an assessment of information on climate change, its impacts and possible response options (adaptation and mitigation). Summaries for policymakers of three reports of IPCC working groups and of the Synthesis Report have now been approved by IPCC plenaries. This present paper reports on the most essential findings in AR5. It briefly informs on the contents of reports of all IPCC working groups. It discusses the physical science findings, therein observed changes (ubiquitous warming, shrinking cryosphere, sea level rise, changes in precipitation and extremes, and biogeochemical cycles). It deals with the drivers of climate change, progress in climate system understanding (evaluation of climate models, quantification of climate system responses), and projections for the future. It reviews impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, including observed changes, key risks, key reasons for concern, sectors and systems, and managing risks and building resilience. Finally, mitigation of climate change is discussed, including greenhouse gas emissions in the past, present and future, and mitigation in sectors. It is hoped that the present article will encourage the readership of this journal to dive into the AR5 report that provides a wealth of useful information.

Opis:
The study aimed to assess the change of soil properties of land use patterns affecting drought and saline intrusion in the Ben Tre province during 2019–2020. Soil samples were taken, and the data on land use patterns of Rice, bare soil, Shrimp, and Coconut in three horizons were at 0–20 cm, 20–60 cm, and 60–100 cm. The analysis of soil pH, EC, organic matter, and bulk density was conducted to assess the changes in soil properties. The results showed that soil pH, EC, and salinity had to be slightly increased in 2020, but soil organic matter and bulk density were not changed. Therefore, the Ben Tre province’s drought and saline intrusion conditions had a negligible impact in general evaluation. However, it is necessary to perform more other studies to clarify the effects of drought and salinity.

Opis:
In the paper a general safety analytical model of complex technical system related to the climateweather change process in its operating area is defined. First, the system operation at climate-weather variable conditions is given. Additionally, the semi-Markov approach is used. Further, the safety model of the multistate system at climate-weather variable conditions is introduced. The notions of the conditional safety functions at the climate-weather particular states, the unconditional safety function and the risk function of the complex system at changing in time climate-weather conditions are presented. The other safety indices like mean lifetime up to the exceeding a critical safety state, the moment when the risk function value exceeds the acceptable safety level, the intensities of ageing of the critical infrastructure and its components and the coefficients of the climate-weather impact on the critical infrastructure and its components intensities of ageing are defined.

Records of human activity in valleys of the Upper Vistula River catchment and the Upper Dniester River catchment in the area of the Eastern Carpathian Foreland are synchronic and date back to the Neolithic Period. They include alluvia and colluvia in small valleys, linked with local downpours, as well as changes in large valleys, where flooding is reflected in modifications to river channels and an acceleration in the deposition of overbank facies. Among these periods are phases determined climatically (5th–7th centuries AD) and those reflecting human activity (1st–3rd centuries AD), as well as phases recording the coincidence of both factors (middle Neolithic, 10th–11th centuries AD and the Little Ice Age). The most distinct changes leading to transformation in valley slopes and bottoms are linked with the coincidence of humid climatic phases and periods of increased human impact.

The currently observed increase in human activity in the Arctic accelerates the negative impact on the environment as well as increases the risk of threats to mankind itself. This paper reviews and summarises a selection of studies on the interaction between humans and the environment in the Arctic coastal zone, which is impacted by a warming climate and associated geohazards. The paper presents a general description of human presence in the Arctic, identifies and describes the processes that are threatening the infrastructure, and the anthropogenic processes that have a negative impact on the Arctic. It considers the possible future economic opportunities, and presents the sustainable requirements for modern human activity in the Arctic. The paper demonstrates the urgent need to develop a common, Arctic-wide strategy based on sustainable development. The time has come to change human perception of the Arctic because, in the near future, it may be considered as a refuge for climate change refugees.

The marshes are the most abundant water sources and ecological rich communities. They have a significant impact on the ecological and economic well-being of the communities surrounding them. However, climatic changes directly impact these bodies of water, especially those marshes which depend on rainwater and flooding for their survival. The Al-Sannya marsh is used as the example of marshes in Southern Iraq for this study between 1987-2017. The research takes place throughout the winter season due to the revival of marshes in southern Iraq at this time of year. The years 1987, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2007, 2014, 2017 are the focus of this study. Satellite imagery from the Landsat 5 (TM) and Landsat 8 (OLI) and the meteorological parameters affecting the marsh were acquired from NASA. The calculation of the areas of water bodies after classification using satellite imagery is done using the maximum likelihood method and comparing it with meteorological parameters. These results showed that these marshes are facing extinction due to the general change of climate and the interference of humans in utilising the drylands of the marsh for agricultural purposes. The vegetation area can be seen to have decreased from 51.15 km2 in 2000 to 8.77 km2 in 2017.

The geographic position, astronomic factors (e.g. the Earth’s maximum distance from the Sun during winter), ice cover and altitude are the main factors affecting the climate of the Antarctic, which is the coldest place on Earth. Parts of Antarctica are facing the most rapid rates of anthropogenic climate change currently seen on the planet. Climate changes are occurring throughout Antarctica, affecting three major groups of environmental variables of considerable biological signifi cance: temperature, water, UV-B radiation. Low diversity ecosystems are expected to be more vulnerable to global changes than high diversity ecosystems.

The debate on the climatic impact of Arctic change is currently focused on the fate of the perennial sea-ice and the climatic and social effects of its disappearance. Developments in our observing techniques mean that we are in prospect of being technically able to describe the ocean-atmosphere-cryosphere system of high northern latitudes operating as a complete system for the first time. Understanding this system and improving its predictability in models seems to be our most direct way of extending the ability of society to mitigate for or adapt to its changes, including global change. The integrated Arctic Ocean Observing System (iAOOS), described here, is a means of piecing together the available PIs, gear, ships and funding on the pan-Arctic scale that seems necessary to making the attempt, and the International Polar Year (2007–2009) provides the necessary stimulus for doing so.

Climate has been changing since the beginning of the Earth. During the Holocene the climate has not changed much but there were both warmer and cooler episodes. Varying insolation is the main reason for climate change during the Holocene. All other reasons, including among others changes of the Earth orbital parameters (Milankovitch cycles) and thermohaline oceanic circulation played a secondary role. Occasional volcanic eruptions were climatic disasters but usually on a local or regional scale and only in a short time. A record of climate change during the Holocene indicates its great influence on the development and decline of ancient civilizations and societies. From a geological point of view there is no reasonable record suggesting that contents of CO2 in the atmosphere played a predominant role of in the ongoing climate change during the last century.

On 16 April 2014, the Directive 2014/52/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council was adopted which amended the Directive 2011/92/EU on the assessment of the effect of certain public and private projects on the environment. The amendment organizes and extends the scope of environmental impact assessments (EIA), raising new challenges for the entities responsible for preparing EIA reports. A major change is the introduction into the mandatory scope of the report of the requirement to conduct an assessment of “the expected effects deriving from the vulnerability of the project to risks of major accidents or disasters”, with special emphasis placed on environmental hazards resulting from climate change. As environmental impact assessments become a common practice, there will be a growing need for data to enable the evaluation of the vulnerability of a project to risks and accidents, as well as of the probability and significance of existing and projected environmental hazards. To enhance the role of the spatial information infrastructure in the process of preparing EIA reports, it is necessary to better adapt the content and methods of visualization of thematic layers to the specific nature of the EIA tasks. In order to implement the requirements of the EIA Directive, it is necessary to develop a set of vulnerability indicators and critical levels for particular types of projects. The paper presents the possibilities of linking the development of the spatial information infrastructure to the EIA system and provides suggestions as to the extension of the scope of thematic layers to be included in geoportals.
