    The paper presents a description of the concept of a forest regulation method in the forest conversion system and a comparative analysis of its features as exemplified by the Siemianice Experimental Forest Range, Zielonka Experimental Forest Range and Łopuchówko Forest Range, Kąty working circle. In addition, the study also offers detailed data concerning the method of realisation of the mature pine stand reconstruction by a group clear cutting system performed on the experimental surface in the Podanin Forest District and the results obtained after 20 years.

    Opis:
    The article presents results of assessment of growth parameters of oak and fir trees developed on surfaces on which, earlier, the following three types of felling were carried our simultaneously: clear cutting (1−Rz), shelterwood cutting (2−Rcz) and group clear cutting (3−Rg) applied 35 years ago to reconstruct a hornbeam−oak tree stand. This is a successive stage of research showing which of the applied types of felling created sufficiently favourable permanent conditions, which are reflected at this stage of growth of the above−mentioned tree species.

    Opis:
    The paper discusses the impact of clear−cutting and artificial regeneration on species composition of the fresh coniferous Vaccinio vitis−idaeae – Pinetum association Sokoł. 1981. The studies were conducted in the maturing artificially established stands (of 55−77 years) and 150−180 year−old natural old−growth stands in the Polish and Belarusian part of the Białowieża Primeval Forest. No quantitative and qualitative differences were found in species composition and structure between the two groups of stands. The lack of significant differences between the two development stages was ascertained using ecological indicator values. In the maturing stands the non−forest species were not found, and all species (so−called euphytes??), characteristic of the Vaccinio vitis−idaeae – Pinetum association, were already present there. This means that the use of a clear cutting system emulating the catastrophic natural disturbance pattern of forest dynamics in this association did not entail permanent changes in the ground vegetation.

    Opis:
    Maintaining biological diversity is one of the main goals of modern forestry. To reach this objective we need to know how management practices affect forest species. This study summarizes the results published in papers on the influence of clear−cutting on small mammals. Most of the studied species increased in abundance on clear−cuts. The response of voles (Microtus agrestis and M. arvalis) was uniformly positive. Mice (Apodemus flavicollis and A. sylvaticus) and shrews (Sorex araneus and S. minutus) varied in their responses but generally their number increased on clear−cuts. Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) appeared to be associated with the heterogeneity of habitat rather than with the age of forest stands per se. Nevertheless, our knowledge on the effects of forest management on small mammals is far from complete. In particular, there are almost no studies on the subject conducted in Western Europe or concerning management practices other than clear−cutting.

    Opis:
    Optimisation of patch selective cutting, especially the interaction between size and shape of artificial gaps and biotic factors influencing tree regeneration, is rather sparsely documented in Polish silvicultural textbooks. The removal of trees can increase availability of nutrients in artificial gaps. Establishment of root gaps and vigorous development of vegetative cover (weeds) is another consequence. This paper presents review of investigations that describe interactions between mentioned factors influencing regeneration growth and parameters of gaps. The special attention is paid to potential application of cited results in practical silviculture.

    Opis:
    The paper presents the study on the height of 10−12−year−old pedunculate oak regeneration in clear−cut gaps in three fertility variants: mezotrophic of poorer productivity (fresh mixed coniferous forest – BMśw), mezotrophic of higher productivity (fresh mixed deciduous forest – LMśw) and eutrophic (fresh deciduous forest – Lśw). BMśw and LMśw were represented by two locations: Gostynin (G) and Parczew (P), while Lśw – by one: Czarna Białostocka (CzB). We analysed the variation of oak height in the patches along the north−south (N−S) and east−west (E−W) gap axes. In each location 3−5 gaps were selected and measurements taken on three transects along the N−S axis located in the western (W), central (C) and eastern (E) part. Significant differences in oak height were found along the N−S axis. Oaks in the BMśw and LMśw habitats in the south−central part, and those in the Lśw habitat in the centre−northern part of the patch were the highest. The height growth of oaks on sandy soils (BMśw, LMśw) was found to be limited by moisture deficit, while on loamy soils (Lśw) – by light deficiency. The differences in oak height along the E−W axis were smaller and less apparent, indicating a tendency towards the reduction of their height growth in the central part of the gap.
