Opis:
Batteries are electric cells that use a reversible electrochemical process. One of the important components in the battery is the electrode. Electrodes in conventional batteries generally contain the B3 material. This study aimed to produce and characterize the bioelectrolytes made from blood clam shells and sugarcane bagasse. This study consisted of four stages, namely the stage of calcination of blood clam shells, the stage of hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse, the stage of making bioelectrolyte paste, and the stage of test parameters. The test parameters performed included calcined blood clam shell morphology analysis using SEM, composition and mineral analysis on blood clam shell ash using XRF (X-Ray Fluorcence), analysis using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and analysis using FTIR spectrophotometry. The characterization of the bioelectrolytes was tested using an AVOmeter or a multimeter connected using a connecting cable and an alligator clip. The best bioelectrolyte results were obtained using a reaction time of 90 minutes and a concentration of acid solution 30% (v/v) with a mixture of shell ash and sugarcane bagasse paste in 1:1 ratio. The best power produced was 0.02 watts.

Opis:
The invasive Asiatic freshwater bivalve Corbicula fluminea is regarded as a pest in several countries including Brazil. Two water birds native to South America, the limpkin Aramus guarauna and the common gallinule Gallinula galeata, are herein recorded preying on C. fluminea in a pond of an urban park in South-eastern Brazil. The exotic clam is becoming increasingly common in the diet of both these water birds. This trend is likely due to its increasing population and the consequent rarity of the habitual prey (apple snails and native clams) for the mollusc-specialised limpkin, besides being an accessible animal protein source for the omnivorous gallinule.

Live specimens of the gulf wedge clam (Rangia cuneata) were for the first time found in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon in 2011. The species is native to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of North America. First records of its introduction in Europe were reported in 2005 from Belgium and then in 2010 from the Russian part of the Vistula Lagoon.

Seafood is an excellent provider of protein with high biological values. Fish, shellfish and other aquatic organisms are appropriate for food and have world-wide importance. They‟re wonderful sources of high quality proteins, superior to those in red meat and poultry foods. The human dietary amendments that characterize the “nutrition transition” include every quantitative and qualitative change in the human diets. The present study Meretrix casta meat is used for the preparation of excellent recipes like cake, soup and mint stuffed tomato with yellow clam using M. casta meat, that have the potential to be become a regular food item in the house hold diet with consumer acceptance. The differences in food habits over the length and breadth of the nation are most that available food resources are not being used properly due to the lack of information regarding their importance. The panel of judges vouched safe for taste and delicacy of the dishes in the present study. The panel detected that the dishes were a lot of as good as those created out of the much sought after seafood in taste, smell and flavor

Opis:
This study discusses the occurrence of neoplasia in the Baltic clam Macoma balthica from the Gulf of Gdańsk in recent years and investigates potential relationships between toxic compounds in the environment and the presence of the cancer. The disease was identified at four sampling stations during 1999–2002. Comparison with previous results highlighted the substantial prevalence of the tumour between 1998 and 2002. The prevalence of the cancer was strongly dependent on the sampling location (p < 0.001): it was highest at sampling point H45 (the deepest part of the gulf) and lowest at station PB30 (central part of the gulf). Monthly studies showed a trend towards an increasing prevalence of neoplasia during the warm months. However, over several sampling months no strong statistical correlation between the prevalence of the disease and the sampling time was found. The results of the study suggest that several environmental factors may promote the progress of the cancer in M. balthica from the Gulf of Gdańsk: it is most probably an indirect effect of pollution, although causality cannot be proven at this stage. Seriously polluted and exhibiting a considerable asymmetry of contamination, the ecosystem of the gulf provides an ideal environment for testing potential cause-effect relationships between pollutants and their biological effects.

Opis:
Genus Perkinsus Levine, 1978 (Alveolata, Perkinsidae) an intracellular pathogenic parasite is described from the mantle and gill filaments of a commercially important clam, Meretrix meretrix, collected from the Arabian Gulf, Saudi Arabia. This genus contains currently seven named species: P. marinus, P. olseni (P. atlanticus), P. chesapeaki (P. andrewsi), P. mediterraneus, P. honshuensis, P. beihaiensis and P. qugwadi. Meanwhile, some unnamed Perkinsus sp. have been described in wide variety of mollusc species. Ultrastructural features of Perkinsus sp. trophozites and the host reaction are described. The different developmental stages of trophozoites appeared as single or grouped cells surrounded by amorphous material that constituted cysts or nodules randomly distributed throughout the connective tissue of the mantle. The early trophozoites were generally spherical to ellipsoidal with a circular nucleus containing a prominent central nucleolus. The cytoplasm had several small vacuoles which coalesce to form a great vacuole in the later trophozoites and the nucleus becomes eccentric. Some lomosomes were observed between the wall and the plasmalemma of trophozoites. A large number of degraded and pyknotic cell and several cellular structure with lysed aspects were encountered in the surrounding area near the cysts. Ultrastructural data showed that the lysed granular cells and the coalescence of the granules result in the cyst that encapsulates various trophozoites. In the current study, we describe for the first time the presence of Perkinsus sp. as well as the host reaction in clams from the Saudi Arabian coasts.

Opis:
Background. Macoma balthica is the major zoobenthic species in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Material. Two (4.2%) of the 48 M. balthica specimens collected in 2002 from the depth of 40 m were found to harbour metacercariae−containing sporocysts of Parvatrema affinis (Jameson et Nicoll, 1913) James, 1964. Results. The paper reports morphoanatomical dimensions of 30 sporocysts and metacercariae. Due to the common occurrence of the intermediate (Macoma balthica) and definitive (anseriform and charadriiform birds) hosts of P. affinis in the Gulf of Gdańsk, the trematodes are regarded as a constant component of the local biocoenose.
