Opis:
The article presents a report on the relations between the three main religious groups of Gdańsk: Lutherans, Catholics and Calvinists in the period of the first three centuries after the proclamation of Martin Luther’s theses in Wittenberg (1517). The report includesthe periods of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (until 1793), Napoleonic epoch (1807-1814) and first years of the Prussian partition (until 1817). At that time the Lutherans were the dominant religious group in Gdańsk, but they failed to take the total control of the city. The Catholics lost their precedence soon after the Reformation, but they increased their number until the beginning of the 19th century and strengthened social and cultural influences at that time. The Calvinists were the biggest losers in that confrontation, because they didnot manage to dominate the city (at the turn of 16th and 17th centuries), lost believers and finally were subordinated to the Lutherans within the Evangelical Union (1817). The religions under discussion sometimes formed alliances, but it was not always the alliance between both groups of Protestants. Especially during the expansion of Calvinism in the city, the Lutherans looked for help from the Catholics and sometimes the latter provided them a real support.

Opis:
The book by Marcin Starzyński recapitulates, rectifies and complements what we at present know about the medieval City Council of Cracow as an institution. The discussed monograph collected the most important issues devoted to the medieval Council of Cracow. The monograph pointed also to the directions along which further research should be continued. The volume therefore does not conclude the study of the aforementioned institution. Its task is rather to introduce further research whose subject-matter might include: the prosopographic studies, the law-creating accomplishments of the Council and the political role that it played in the medieval Kingdom of Poland. It is worthwhile to note that half the volume is covered by the appendices that inform of the city councilors, include the register of the Council-produced wilkurs and specify the debts incurred by the Council in order to achieve the measures needed for lending money to the Kings.

Opis:
The Hylzens, connected with the Duchy of Livonia, became members of the political elite of the Polish-Lithuanian state in the mid-18th century. Owning extensive lands in so-called Polish Livonia and in the north of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, in the times of Johan August Hylzen (from 1754 the governor of Minsk) they acquired estates in Pomerania near Gdansk and in Gdansk. In the years 1730–1738 Johan August held the emphyteusis of “Polanka Quellbrun” belonging to the abbey of Oliwa; in 1752 he leased another estate which was part of the abbey – “Konnertshammer” (“Konradshammer”). From 1757 (1756?) he also leased a property located in Nowe Ogrody of Gdansk, which was recorded in the Gdansk land register under the name of his wife Konstancja née Plater (died in 1795) as a hereditary property (in 1767 after Johan August’s death) after he had received the Prussian ius indigenatus in 1766 shortly before his death. After the rocky period of the Bar Confederation, the palace situated here served as a shelter for Konstancja and her sons – Józef Jerzy and Justynian Gracjan. At the turn of 1756 and 1757 Johan August with his wife acquired the starosty of Parchowow, which they lost in 1772. All the estates situated in Gdansk and Pomerania were passed to Tadeusz Mostowski by the last of the Polish-Livonian Hylzens – Idzi (about 1769–1800) and his wife Marie née Brzostowska on the strength of the agreements concluded in 1797. Johan August was interested in maintaining contacts with Pomerania and deposited large sums of money of Gdansk banks. Unfortunately, it has not been established yet what his plans concerning this economically developed region were.
