Opis:
The development of Pécs is essentially due to its historically central location and to the fact that the regional institutions and the revenues generated by them have enriched the city. This functional wealth elevated the city to a position above the surrounding settlements. In its development, culture has always played a significant role. From the second half of the 19th century, it was industrial development which contributed most to its growth, a trend which was reversed at the end of the 20th century. The crisis arrived with the transition in the 1980s and has so far not been resolved. The city once more based its growth concept on human capital and on the cultural tradition when formulating new development strategy, and, as a result, it won the title of European Capital of Culture 2010. However, market processes and EU development funds necessarily generate trends which are rather more global, and in the post-socialist cities there are insufficient funds for endogenous development based on local factors to be realised.

Im Artikel werden die Beziehungen zwischen dem Wasser als architektonischem Medium und der Kultur von Wilna dargestellt. Das Hauptanliegen ist dabei die Bezeichnung der sozialen und ästhetischen Rolle des Wassers in der Entwicklung der Wilnaer Architektur unter Berücksichtigung des Wandels im Bereich der Werte und Konzepte des urbanen Designs. In der Architektur von Wilna spiegelt das Wasser die Grundsätze der Funktionalität und der künstlerischen Konzepte wider, die für einige unterschiedliche Epochen charakteristisch waren. In der Schlussfolgerung stelle ich fest, dass die Beziehungen zwischen dem Wasser und der litauischen Kulturidentität schwach sind, so dass dieses architektonische Medium eher durch äußere Kräfte als Mittel der sozialen Suggestion, als zur Befriedigung der inneren Bedürfnisse der litauischen Kultur verwendet wurde. Die aktuell geführten Diskussionen haben jedoch ein Potenzial für zukünftigen Wandel. 
This article attempts to present an overview of the connection between water, seen as an architectural medium, and the culture of Vilnius City. The main purpose is to identify the social and aesthetic role of water for the development of architecture in Vilnius, taking into account the changes in cultural values and concepts pertaining to urban design. In the architecture of Vilnius, water reflects the principles of functionality and artistic concepts characteristic for several different periods. The conclusions reveal that the connection established between water and the Lithuanian cultural identity has been weak, therefore this architectural medium was used more by external forces as a mean of social suggestion, rather than to satisfy the internal needs of the Lithuanian culture. Nevertheless, the discourse that has been forming over the recent years may have a certain potential for future change.
Artykuł przedstawia powiązania między wodą, rozumianą jako medium architektoniczne, a kulturą Wilna. Głównym celem jest określenie społecznej i estetycznej roli, jaka woda pełni w rozwoju wileńskiej architektury, przy uwzględnieniu przemian w obszarze wartości i koncepcji dotyczących urbanistycznego design. W architekturze Wilna woda odbija zasady funkcjonalności i artystycznych koncepcji charakterystycznych dla kilku różnych okresów.   konkluzji stwierdzam, że powiązania między wodą a litewską tożsamością kulturową są słabe, zatem to architektoniczne medium było raczej używane przez zewnętrzne siły jako środek społecznej sugestii, niż do zaspokajania wewnętrznych potrzeb kultury litewskiej. Niemniej prowadzone obecnie dyskusje niosą pewien potencjał,  gdy idzie o przyszłą zmianę.

The article describes the socio-cultural phenomenon of the increasing interest and attractiveness of urban culture in recent years. The main purpose of this paper is to relate this phenomenon to the category of the new bourgeoisie and to reconsider this term. In my analysis, I wonder whether the new bourgeoisie should actually be interpreted mainly through the prism of their civic potential and involvement or perhaps more in relation to the urban lifestyles and heterogeneous values and practices. I compare the reflection on the new bourgeoisie with the results of my own research and with sociological concepts that focus on the characteristic processes of late modernity. In the article, I try to capture the rhythm of urban life and get to a richer description of the new bourgeois culture by focusing on attitudes and behaviors, on what inhabitants think, how they interpret life in the city, and how they value it.
Artykuł opisuje społeczno-kulturowy fenomen, jakim w ostatnich latach zdaje się być rosnąca atrakcyjność kultury miejskiej. Głównym celem tekstu jest odniesienie tego zjawiska do kategorii nowego mieszczaństwa i jej ponowne przemyślenie. Starając się dokonać rewizji tego terminu, szczególną uwagę zwracam na praktykowane miejskie style życia oraz heterogeniczne systemy wartości i sensów nowych mieszczan. Artykuł jest tym samym próbą uchwycenia rytmu życia po miejsku i dotarcia do bogatszego opisu kultury mieszczańskiej dzięki koncentracji na postawach i zachowaniach, na tym, co mieszkańcy myślą, jak interpretują życie w mieście, jak spędzają w nim czas i jak je wartościują. Refleksję nad nowym mieszczaństwem ilustruję wynikami badań własnych oraz koncepcjami socjologicznymi skupiającymi się na typowych dla późnej nowoczesności procesach i zjawiskach.

Rozwój miasta jest efektem wpływu wielu czynników, które pozostają pod większą lub mniejszą kontrolą władz samorządowych. Kreowanie polityki lokalnej to bezpośrednie i pośrednie oddziaływanie na czynniki zorientowane przede wszystkim na osiągnięcie korzyści dla mieszkańców. Opracowanie na ma celu identyfikację współzależności zachodzących między kulturą a rozwojem społeczno-gospodarczym miasta. Autorzy dokonali rozważań teoretycznych oraz zastosowali metodę studium przypadku, ilustrując omawiane zjawiska na przykładzie miasta Łodzi, które wykorzystuje kulturę w procesach generowania rozwoju oraz kreowania marki terytorialnej. Artykuł pokazuje potencjał kultury w procesach rozwoju terytoriów oraz rekomenduje jej pełniejsze wykorzystanie przez władze samorządowe nie tylko w procesach komunikowania z mieszkańcami, czy potencjalnymi użytkownikami, ale również w procesach katalizowania potencjałów rozwoju miast.
There are many factors that remain under greater or lesser control of local authorities that effect the development of the city. Local policy creation is a direct and indirect impact mainly on factors oriented primarily at achieving benefits for residents. The study aims to demonstrate the important role of culture in the socio-economic development of the territory. The authors have made theoretical considerations and applied the case study method illustrating the discussed phenomena on the example of the city of Lodz, which uses culture in the processes of generating development and creating a territorial brand. The paper shows the potential of culture in the development processes of territories and recommends its wider usage by local governments not only in the processes of communication with residents or potential territorial users, but also in the processes of catalysing the potential of urban development.

The article reflects upon Sam Shepard’s playwrighting in the opening decades of the twenty-first century, paying particular attention to his last play, A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations), written specifically for the Derry/Londonderry City of Culture celebrations in 2013, and originally produced by the renowned Field Day Theatre Company. The article seeks to offer an insight into Shepard’s mature multilayered text, which, in many respects, looks back upon almost fifty years of his artistic creativity and, at the same time, expands his vision. It also addresses the realisation of Shepard’s play in performance and the significance of his text in an interplay of multiple creative inputs involved in the production process. While revisiting the familiar landscapes and themes, Shepard’s most recent work negotiates the boundaries between the actual and the fictitious, raising debates about the persistence of myths, mortality and the haunting legacies of the past. Richly intertextual and conspicuously metatheatrical, it grapples with questions of authenticity, performativity and storytelling – the narratives that are passed down, and how they form and inform our lives. It also engages with, and further problematises, issues of personal and cultural identity, which constitute Shepard’s most durable thematic threads, revealing both the dramatist’s acute concern with fateful determinism and commitment to self-invention. Significantly, while Shepard’s postmillennial output highlights the author’s ongoing preoccupation with instability and frontiers of various sorts (from those topographic, temporal and sociopolitical to those of language and art), it equally intimates his attentiveness to correspondences between times, lands and cultures.

The aim of this article is to show Edinburgh as a city identified by its festivals. Two of them-Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe-influenced cultural landscape of Scottish capital the most, and therefore they were analyzed extensively in this study. I intend to show how the concepts of “space” and “place” surface in the reception of the Edinburgh festivals. I’m presenting both-the residents’ and visitors’-perspectives. I’m trying to better understand how the city, art, and people collide, cooperate and-in the end-coexist.

Living in the city, in physical proximity among its inhabitants, results in mutual influences which generate certain knowledge, attitudes, behavioral dispositions, habits and rituals, the specificity of which is referred to as culture of the city. Educational culture of the city makes a part of this culture. Its structure and its processes can be investigated and developed, and this text presents possibilities of such research and development. The analyses presented here focus on a global city managed in a neoliberal way. Comprehending it as Foucauldian dispositif, one can notice strategic assemblages of social phenomena forming specific apparatuses of power and knowledge in relation to education. Speaking of educational culture of the city as a separate category proves theoretically viable and can be productive both internally, as an element of its specific educational thought, and as a tool for broader reflection on contemporary cities, their cultures and problems. This article aims to justify such an approach.
Życie w mieście – przebiegając we względnej bliskości fizycznej – owocuje wzajemnym wpływem, zaś towarzyszące mu stymulacje generują określoną wiedzę, orientacje, dyspozycje do zachowań, obyczajowość, rytualizacje itd. Ich współwystępowanie skutkuje odrębnością, którą można nazwać kulturą miasta. Kultura edukacyjna miasta jest jej częścią. Jako strukturę i proces można ją interesująco badać i rozwijać. W tekście przedstawiane są możliwości w tym zakresie. Przeprowadzane w nim analizy skupiają się na neoliberalnie zarządzanym mieście globalnym. Rozumiane jako Foucaultowskie urządzenie (dispositif), pozwala dostrzec strategiczne zespoły zjawisk społecznych, tworzące w związku z edukacją specyficzne urządzenia wiedzy i władzy. Wyodrębnienie kultury edukacyjnej miasta, jako kategorii, może okazać się przydatne w teoretycznym opisie i produktywne zarówno w operującej nim myśli pedagogicznej, jak i obszarze szerzej rozumianej refleksji nad współczesnym miastem, jego kulturą i problemami. Celem artykułu jest uzasadnienie takiego podejścia.

The discussion in this article concerns the identification of the culture-based development potential of cities, and the aim of the study, is to classify urban communes (boroughs) in Poland in terms of their culture-based development potential. A multidimensional comparative analysis was used to build a measurement tool and to create rankings of cities. The proposed measure includes five groups of diagnostic variables referring to the cultural infrastructure, cultural events, creative sector, tourist base and public finances. Data from 306 urban communes in Poland from 2013-2016 were collected for the study. The article presents selected research results, such as rankings of cities with the highest City Culture Potential index. This is due to the visibly differentiated strategies for building a competitive advantage, which result in different intensities and the importance of factors assumed as explanatory variables in measuring the potential of culture.
Dyskusja podjęta w niniejszym artykule dotyczy zidentyfikowania potencjału kulturowego miast. Celem opracowania jest klasyfikacja gmin miejskich w Polsce pod względem posiadanego potencjału kulturowego. Dla dokonania uszeregowania zastosowano wielowymiarową analizę porównawczą i zbudowano miernik taksonomiczny. Zaproponowane narzędzie pomiaru uwzględnia pięć grup zmiennych diagnostycznych odnoszących się kolejno do infrastruktury kultury, wydarzeń kulturalnych, sektora kreatywnego, bazy turystycznej i finansów publicznych. Do przeprowadzonego badania zebrano dane z 306 gmin miejskich w Polsce z lat 2013-2016. Artykuł prezentuje wybrane wyniki badań, takie jak rankingi miast o najwyższym wskaźniku potencjału kulturowego. Wykazano, iż analizę potencjału kulturowego powinno się przeprowadzać osobno dla miast w różnych przedziałach wielkości. Spowodowane jest to widocznie zróżnicowanymi strategiami budowy przewagi konkurencyjnej, której efektem jest różne nasilenie i ważność czynników przyjętych za zmienne objaśniające przy pomiarze potencjału kultury.

Autorzy artykułu opisują wybrane przykłady przestrzeni mieszkalnych ukształtowanych i zrealizowanych w XX i XXI wieku a funkcjonujących do obecnych czasów w krajobrazie miast. Starają się wyjaśnić i ocenić odniesienia do filozofii ich budowania i etyki projektowania. Szczególnie zwracają uwagę na procesy manipulacji a zachowania szacunku do natury i otwartych przestrzeni. Zostało to przedstawione na przykładach międzywojennych historycznych osiedli w Łodzi im. Mątwiłła Mireckiego i Werkbundu we Wrocławiu oraz miasta ogrodu Zlin firmy Bata. Fabryka butów Baty zmieniła wygląd całego miasta, które stało się sprawnie funkcjonującą przestrzenią, z precyzyjnie zaprojektowaną architekturą warunkującą każdy aspekt życia. Okres powojennej myśli urbanistycznej przedstawiono na wzorze osiedla Sadów Żoliborskich oraz nowatorskiej idei lat 70-tych na przykładzie konkursu na osiedle Ursynów w Warszawie. Odniesiono się do idei miasta ogrodu i jego odsłony w latach 80-tych poprzez tworzenie zielonych, otwartych osiedli w zabudowie niskiej i dywanowej w ramach zleceń rządowych. Wprawdzie te idee nie były zrealizowane ale pozostawała myśl i pragnienie. Poszanowanie terenów zieleni o zasadniczym znaczeniu dla charakteru miejsca zaprezentowano na przykładzie zespołu domów pasywnych w Konstantynowie Łódzkim czy osiedla Aspern w Wiedniu, sposobu ich procedowania i tworzenia. Zwrócono uwagę na rangę poszanowanie wartości krajobrazowych, wyjaśniono zależności pomiędzy przestrzenią, architekturą a naturą. Podjęto próbę znalezienia priorytetowych o kapitalnym znaczeniu elementów gry przestrzennej dla zachowania wartości nadrzędnych dla środowiska naturalnego i architektury.
The authors of the article describe selected examples of living spaces shaped and constructed in the 20th and 21st century and functioning to the present day in the city landscape. They try to explain and evaluate references to the building philosophy and design ethics. They pay particular attention to the processes of manipulation and respect for nature and open spaces. It was presented on the examples of the historical interwar housing estates in Łódź Mątwiłł Mirecki and Werkbund in Wrocław and the Zlin garden city by the Bata Company. The Bata Shoe Factory changed the shape of the entire city into a functioning space, with architecture conditioning every aspect of life. The period of post-war urban thought was presented on the model of the Sadów Żoliborskie estate and the innovative idea of the 1970s on the example of the competition for the Ursynów estate in Warsaw. It was based on the idea of a garden city and its presentation in the 1980s by creating green, low open housing estates as part of government commissions. Although these ideas were not realized, the idea, thought and desire remained. The respect for green areas of fundamental importance for the character of the place was presented on the example of the passive house complex in Konstantynów Łódzki or the Aspern estate in Vienna. The importance of respect for landscape values was emphasized, and the relationship between space, architecture and nature was explained. An attempt was made to find the main elements of space, which was of paramount importance for the preservation of values superior to the natural environment and architecture.

The collective work, published in 2020, the theme of which is the culture of Bielsko-Biała documents the rich history of the 1wo-city. The city is analyzed on many levels by art historians, literary scholars and linguists. The publication restores the city`s memory related to the heritage of German and Jewish citizens, erased during the building of the Polish People’s Republic (the communist regime). The rediscovery of forgotten stories, symbols, and many other cultural artifacts is reminiscent of a palimpsest on which the experiences of subsequent generations have been overwritten. Getting to the original text is painstaking work that has been successfully undertaken and completed by the editors and authors of the individual chapters.

The essay is devoted to the topic of architecture, which is interdisciplinary and addressed to a wide spectrum of recipients. It uses comparative analysis with its own commentary, which should be treated as a kind of manifesto. It also presents an urban image of the city and the perspectives of its life in relation to architecture. To live or dwell generally means to occupy a certain secure space that was purchased or leased out to satisfy one’s own needs. The scope of the individual needs or possibilities and their realisation is different. One takes advantage of the city as a set of life’s scenarios. The city, which is a distributor of all kinds of services and has a considerable potential to make use of, ensures comfortable life to the wealthy and facilitates survival to the poorest. Ensuring a place for oneself within the space of the city gives one a better chance for successful life than one’s own apartment, for it is culture that is responsible for the standard of one’s life. Architects strictly follow fine art, which alters everyday cultural life, thereby spreading culture precisely in cooperation with artists, taking advantage of their arsenal of common means of expression. In order to solve the design problems, e.g. the shape of architecture and urban tissue, one ought to permanently raise the level of everyday culture in an urban community.

Celem artykułu jest pogłębienie wiedzy z zakresu kształtowania się konsumpcji towarów i usług kulturalno-rekreacyjnych wśród mieszkańców miast, ze wskazaniem współzależności między poziomem tej konsumpcji a determinującymi ją czynnikami ekonomiczno-społecznymi i demograficznymi. Wykazano, że im w większym mieście zlokalizowane było gospodarstwo domowe, tym więcej przeznaczano w nim na kulturę i rekreację. W latach 2006–2019 zaobserwowano względną stabilizację poziomu wydatków na kulturę i rekreację w miejskich gospodarstwach domowych. Na korzystanie z towarów i usług rekreacyjno--kulturalnych przez mieszkańców miast wpływa wiele zmiennych, w tym poziom wykształcenia, płeć orazwiek osób w gospodarstwie domowym, a także dochód rozporządzalny.
The aim of the article is to deepen the knowledge concerning the formation of consumption of goods and services pertaining to culture and recreation among city dwellers, with an indication of the correlation between the level of this consumption and the economic, social and demographic factors that determine it. It was shown that the larger the city in which the household is based, the larger the amounts it spends on culture and recreation. The years 2006-2019 saw a relative stability regarding the expenditure of urban households with reference to these spheres of activity. The use of recreational and cultural goods andservices by city residents is influenced by many variables, including the level of education, gender and ageof people in the household, as well as disposable income.

The study focuses on the architectural projects proposed by the creators of Camerimage festival for Łódź – which is struggling to maintain its position as a “film-friendly” city. A so-called “David Lynch studio” and “Frank Gehry congress center” were preliminarily commissioned by the city, but soon both projects were subjected to heavy criticism from the city council. The author presents the dynamics of the debate and stresses the need for taking into account discussions of the concepts of the “creative class” and the “creative city”.
