    The article analyses the situation of creating new theatres in the Polish People’s Republic in the 1970s in the context of the changes in the cultural policy and the administrative reform. The author juxtaposes theatres in Elbląg, Legnica, Płock, Radom and Słupsk. He shows a confluence of multifarious problems that determined the launch of theatres and analyses the first years of operation, taking into account the issues of audience and educational activities.

    Nowadays, making cities more attractive is becoming increasingly important. Cities are shrinking, which contributes to many other problems major cities are currently facing. Local governments try to mitigate their negative effects by making their cities more attractive to the young. One of the ways of doing so, is to utilize already possessed resources. In this short article, the author analyzes the promotion of the river Odra during the European capital of culture held in Wroclaw in 2016 and compares it with river themed events organized during the previous year (2015). She also analyzes the river’s attractiveness to the young, as they are the city’s target group in terms of preventing Wroclaw’s shrinkage. She also concentrates on the phenomenon of shrinking cities. In conclusion, the article tries to prove that Wroclaw’s main river, the Odra, is utilized not only by governmental bodies but also private and individual initiatives. The young inhabitants of Wroclaw see and acknowledge its importance to the city, and what is more, it has become a place for everyone, regardless of age, gender or hobby. However, its media presence should be emphasized more in the future, during international festivals or cultural events such as the European Capital of Culture.

    The article contains a synthetic review of the most important subjects and directions of research in the field of the history of cities and townspeople in pre-partition Poland (to the end of the eighteenth century) based on scholarly publications from the last ten years. The author characterises the attitude of contemporary historians of cities towards questionnaires and research methods worked out in the second half of the twentieth century in the area of socio-economic history. He also outlines the prospects for the further development of Polish urban historiography, emphasising the importance of taking inspiration from the achievements of cultural anthropology and the cooperation of historians with representatives of other humanistic disciplines.

    The article constitutes an overview of the most important views of Cracow in the Old Polish times. The keynote is the presentation of specific representations (11 views have been discussed) along with the rules of showing the city and – which is the basic thesis – their subjective interpretation in the social and political context. A view beyond the axiomatic principle of the faithfully portrayed urban space usually carried out interpretations which were more or less visualized (both by their creators and recipients). It should be read as a testimony of the epoch, exploring the circumstances of their creation and possible cultural analysis. The first of the discussed representations is the view in the work of Hartman Schedel of 1493; it is not so much the real image of the city as its sign – it corresponds to the views of the city landscape at that time. The second view, from 1537, probably by Mathias Gerung, despite being generally the faithful reflection of the reality, omits many details or distorts them. However, the first representation which faithfully presents the details is the view of 1581; however, it, in turn, deforms the urban space (which, incidentally, was a conscious choice of the creator). Two views in Civitates orbis terrarum by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, published in 1617, are the most informative views presenting Cracow. The latter is the most beautiful picture of the capital city and it also became the source which was later used by the creators of the next panoramas of Cracow, who changed the prototype more or less uncritically (1619, 1696, the second quarter of the 18th century). A breakthrough in the representation of the city, rooted in modern thinking, was the “rationalist” view of 1785. Iconography, like any historical source, is subject to critical review; it should also be – for verification purposes – confronted with other archival sources. In this process, methods from the area of art history, history of architecture, urban planning and historical landscape architecture are applied. There are mutual relations between iconography and written communication; iconography can be the complement, but it can also be the main source, or even the only one.

    Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, jakie czynniki warunkują możliwość instrumentalnego wykorzystania kultury dla rozwoju miast. Autorka opiera się na badaniach empirycznych (przeprowadzonych w 41 miastach), których podstawą jest teoria wartości kultury Johna Holdena. Według założeń teoretycznych ogólna wartość generowana przez podmioty działające w sektorze kultury, istotna z punktu widzenia różnych grup interesariuszy, jest wypadkową trzech następujących komponentów: wartości instytucjonalnej, instrumentalnej oraz integralnej. Badania wskazały, że o możliwości wykorzystania zjawisk kultury w rozwoju miast współdecydują trzy obszary: zasoby materialne i niematerialne, polityka kulturalna i kapitał kreatywny. Największym problemem dla możliwości wykorzystania kultury jest zaś brak dialogu i dążenia do konsensusu w programowanej polityce kulturalnej.
    The article aims to answer the question what factors determine the possibility of instrumental use of culture for urban development. The article refers to the empirical research (conducted in 41 cities) which is based on the theory of cultural value by John Holden. According to its theoretical assumptions, the cultural value, generated by entities operating in the cultural sector and defined from the perspective of different stakeholders, is the result of three different values: institutional, instrumental and intrinsic. The research shows that the most important areas affecting the possibility of using culture for urban development are: tangible and intangible resources, cultural policy and creative capital. The most worrying problem for the possible use of culture lies in the lack of dialogue and consensus in cultural policy.

Zarysowano również współczesne postrzeganie zależności między ekonomią (gospodarką) a kulturą. Następnie przedstawiono metodykę oraz przebieg procesu badawczego konkurencyjności miast kreatywnych według autorskiego narzędzia badawczego – Indeksu Konkurencyjności Miast Kreatywnych. Artykuł kończy przedstawienie wyników – rankingu miast kreatywnych oraz charakterystyka wspomnianego Indeksu.
    The article explain of title culture industries as the authors' definition of cultural industries, as well as outlines the contemporary perception of the relationship between the economy and culture. Then presents the methodology and the course of the research process, creative cities' competitiveness by authors’ research tool - Creative Cities Competitiveness Index. The article concludes with the presentation of results - the ranking of creative cities and the characteristics of mentioned Index.
    В статье было выяснено значение представленного в заглавии определения Culture industries в мысль авторского определения культурных индустрий. Было обозначено также современное восприятие зависимости между экономикой, а культурой. Затем была представлена методика, а также ход исследовательского процесса конкурентности креативных городов согласно авторскому исследовательскому инструменту – «Индекс конкурентности креативных городов». Статья заканчивается представлением результатов - рейтинга креативных городов, а также характеристикой упомянутого Индекса.
