Opis:
The process of design of building composites, like concrete is a complex one and involves many aspects like physical and mechanical properties, durability, shielding efficiency, costs of production and dismantlement etc. There are plenty of parameters to optimize and computer tools can help to choose the best solution. A computer aided design plays an important role nowadays. It becomes more accurate, faster and cheaper, so laboratories often apply computer simulation methods prior to field testing. In case of nuclear engineering, the radiation shielding problems are of much importance, because safety of such facilities is a key point. In this article the most effective methods for neutron shielding studies based on Monte-Carlo simulations of neutron transport and nuclide activation studies in concrete are presented. Two codes: MCNPX and CINDER’90 are extensively used to compare the shielding efficiency of commonly used concretes and to study the influence of concentration of B, Ba and Fe elements on shielding efficiency.

Opis:
The article presents the results of thermodynamic and experimental research on the processing of cinders from the firing of Shalkiya deposit lead-zinc ore tailings with the production of siliceous ferroalloys. Thermodynamic modeling carried out using the HSC-6.0 complex based on the Gibbs energy minimization principle showed that the interaction occur with the formation of CaSiO3, FeSiO3, MgSiO3, K2OˑSiO2, FeSi, Fe5Si3, SiC, Fe3Si, Si, SiOg, FeSi2.33, FeSi2, CaSi, Zn, Zng, Pb, Pbg; an increase in the iron amount in the system allows increasing the silicon extraction degree into the alloy at 1800°C to 76%, to reduce the silicon concentration in the alloy from 41 to 24%; FS25 grade ferrosilicon formed at 1752-1867°C in the presence of 88-100% iron, and FS45 grade ferrosilicon – at 1863-1900°C and 20-22.4% iron. Electric melting of a charge containing 63.83% calcined cinder of tailings, 19.15% coke, and 17.02% steel chips allows to obtain FS45 grade ferrosilicon (44.1-43.9% Si) with the extraction of 69.7% silicon and sublimates with the content of 32-38% zinc and lead. The results obtained allow complex processing of lead-zinc sulfide ore tailings with the extraction of not only non-ferrous metals, but also silicon in the ferroalloy.

Opis:
As part of a field experiment to examine slope processes, four experimental grids with painted and numbered cinders were placed on the outer crater rims of two scoria cones in the San Francisco volcanic field, Arizona. Each grid contained 50 cinders placed in five rows of ten each. Rows were placed parallel to local slope contours. The mean diameter for each cinder was 1.7±0.2 cm (n = 200) and the average grid slope was 20.2°. Grids were set in July 1992. They were revisited one month later in August 1992 and again two years later in August 1994. Although several cinders failed to show any movement in the August 1992 survey, the average length of movement was 11.2 cm (n = 118). If the total movement is averaged over the 197 cinders that were relocated, the average length of movement then becomes 6.7 cm (n = 197). All cinders showed movement in the August 1994 survey and the average distance of movement was 32.8 cm (n= 141 with 59 missing cinders). The mean annual rate of movement after 25 months was 15.8cm/yr(n= 141). Using the convention that the 180° azimuth direction is downslope and perpendicular to local slope contours, the direction of cinder movement more closely approaches 180° with an increase in time. The azimuth directions calculated after just one month of emplacement display greater scatter and variability than the more correlated results measured after 25 months. The mean azimuth value after the 1992 survey was 163.6±54.2° (n= 118), while the mean azimuth after the 1994 survey was 177.9±20.7° (n = 141). Several painted cinders displayed upslope movement when the grids were first visited after one month. However, after two years the cumulative movement for every cinder was downslope from its original position. Non-channel overland flow is interpreted to be the primary erosional agent responsible for moving the cinders in the downhill direction. Rainsplash is interpreted to be responsible for moving the cinders in the upslope direction and is believed to be the major contributor to the variability in the azimuth measurements.
