Opis:
Results of test of a small power induction motor working in liquid nitrogen are presented in the paper. The motor was designed in such manner to enable flow of the liquid nitrogen inside it. Bearings and design of its rotor were changed to minimize additional mechanical loss. Tests were carried on at feeding the motor from network with sinusoidal voltage and by frequency converter. Results of the motor tests in ambient temperature are presented for comparison reasons. Research was provided due to increasing requirement for equipment for transfer, storage and distribution of liquid gases, which require motors working more often in submerged conditions. Results of the presented research enable assessment of possibilities of applications of typical small power motors to be working as submerged in liquid gases, being dielectrics, as liquid nitrogen at temperature - 196°C and liquid natural gas at temperature - 161°C.

Opis:
Issues concern selection of windings insulation system of high voltage cage induction motors predicted for operation in liquid gases, and particularly in liquid natural gas (LNG), are described in the paper. Particular attention was put on turn-to-turn insulation and the main insulation of coils. Basic differences, which take place at selection of these insulations for motors working in liquid gas and typical conditions, are discussed. Dielectric liquid gas interaction on the coil insulation system is very positive regarding its electrical strength, due to removal effects of eventual cracks of the insulation, as effect of such cracks filling with gas being dielectric. Simultaneously, cooling down of the winding to very low temperature introduce hazards created by possible freezing of moisture content in eventual porosity of the insulation, and relocation of the winding wires caused by thermal shrinkage of the system. Such relocation can cause turn-to-turn short-circuits, due to rubbing of the wire insulation. Results of techno-climatic tests of materials and insulating system selected for application in the model motor of power 785 kW; and voltage 6 kV, predicted for operation in LNG (at temperature -161°C), are presented. Proposals and design recommendations, concern insulating system of such type of high voltage motors, were elaborated on the base of the above mentioned insulating materials and system tests.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the solubility of CO2 in perfluorodecalin (PFD) which is frequently used as efficient liquid carrier of respiratory gases in bioprocess engineering. The application of perfluorinated liquid in a microsystem has been presented. Gas-liquid mass transfer during Taylor (slug) flow in a microchannel of circular cross section 0.4 mm in diameter has been investigated. A physicochemical system of the absorption of CO2 from the CO2/N2 mixture in perfluorodecalin has been applied. The Henry’s law constants have been found according to two theoretical approaches: physical (H = 1.22x10-3 mol/m3Pa) or chemical (H = 1.26x10-3 mol/m3Pa) absorption. We are hypothesising that the gas-liquid microchannel system is applicable to determine the solubility of respiratory gases in perfluorinated liquids.

Opis:
Fully synthetic, biochemically inert and water-immiscible liquid perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are recognised as flexible liquid carriers/scavengers of gaseous compounds (respiratory gases mainly, i.e. O2 and CO2) and increasingly applied in bioprocess engineering. A range of unmatched physicochemical properties of liquid PFCs, i.e. outstanding chemo- and thermostability, extremely low surface tension, simultaneous hydro- and lipophobicity, which result from carbon chain substitution with fluorine atoms (the most electronegative chemical element) and the presence of intramolecular C–F bonds (the strongest single bond known in organic chemistry) have been described in detail. Exceptional propensity to solubility of respiratory gases in liquid perfluorinated compounds has been widely discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of bioprocess applications of liquid PFCs in the form of a pure PFC as well as in an emulsified form have been pointed out. A liquid PFC-mediated mass transfer intensification in various types of microbial, plant cell and animal cell culture systems: from miniaturised microlitre-scale cultures, via biomaterial-based scaffolds containing culture systems, to litre-scale bioreactors, has been reviewed and elaborated on bearing in mind the benefits of bioprocesses.

Opis:
A mathematical model of a hybrid culture system supported with a stationary layer of liquid perfluorochemical (PFC) as a source of O2 for cells which grow in the aqueous phase of culture medium has been developed and discussed. The two-substrate Monod kinetics without inhibition effects, i.e. the Tsao-Hanson equation, has been assumed to characterise the biomass growth. The Damköhler number which relates the growth rate to the mass transfer effects has been used to appraise the regime (i.e. diffusion-limited or kinetics) of the whole process. The proposed model predicted accurately previously published data on the submerged batch cultures of Nicotiana tabacum BY-2 heterotrophic cells performed in a culture system supported with a stationary layer of hydrophobic perfluorodecalin as a liquid O2 carrier. Estimated values of the parameters of the model showed that the process proceeded in the kinetics regime and the growth kinetics, not the effects of the mass transfer between aqueous phase and liquid PFC, had essential influence on the growth of biomass.

Emission of carbon dioxide, which may affect the greenhouse effect leading to global warming is acritical aspect of the industrial use of thermal devices. The article presents the results of testing thecombustion processes in theoperating conditions in an industrial heating device fired by gas burners. technical, energy and operational parameters of theselected chamber for thermal processof the selected fuel inputwere characterized and analysed. A solution related to pressure controlin thecombustion chamber, which should be used to reduce the level of CO2emissions, which will enable a positive environmental impact is presented. Pro-ecologicalcharacterof the presented solution isa very important practical effect. Especially nowadays, when there is a strong need to reduce the negative impact of production processes on environment, and all solutions leading to a reduction in CO2emission should also be perceived as very important for business.
