Opis:
The author presents the problems faced by Vilnius University when, as a result of a reform carried out in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 19th century, it received 10 benefices from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Vilnius. The article is based on a case study of Marcin Poczobut-Odlanicki, a professor at Vilnius University and the parish priest of Anykščiai. On the basis of the sources and the findings of historians to date, the author puts forward the contention that the problems that Poczobut had to deal with as the administrator of church benefices contributed to making the university aware of the legal, organisational and financial issues related to their possession as well as influenced the modification of the originally adopted model of managing them carried out by the university.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 61 (2013), issue 2. The article addresses the question of the fall of the Latin parish in Chorupnik that belonged to the former diocese of Chełm. The parish church in Chorupnik was taken over by Protestants in the second half of the 16th century. Unsuccessful attempts at recovering its property were made by incorporating it into the neighbouring parish in Gorzków. The actions taken by the Gorzków parish priest and the bishop together with his chapter failed, too. A detailed study of such attempts to recover the property of one of the parishes that ceased to exist during the Reformation falls within the context of the relations between the nobility and the clergy in the period of Counter-Reformation. Studying the social, legal and economic relations in a local dimension is important for understanding the mechanisms of the mass transition of the nobility to reformed denominations, and then of their return to the Catholic Church.

Opis:
The religious policy of the Russian State was inspired by two ideological trends, which were rooted in the tradition of Peter I and Catherine II - Caesaropapism and Slavophilism. Russian rulers sought to subjugate the religious denominations, and also to build a Pan-Slavic empire with the Russian language. With regard to the Catholic Church, those demands proved to be extremely valid as 60% of the lands of the Polish Republic became part of Russia after the partitions. The tsarist authorities tried to separate Catholics from the Holy See and impose gradually the Russian language and culture on them. Secular authorities wanted to gain control over church institutions - dioceses, seminaries, parishes, monasteries. To achieve that aim, the authorities established the Roman-Catholic College (1801), and subordinated it directly to the Ministry of the Interior. Both organizations exercised full control over ecclesiastical institutions. Lay prosecutors in both of those offices played a decisive role. At the command of the tsarist regime all the monastic, diocesan and parish properties were gradually taken over, in return certain salaries (1832.1843) were granted to them. On the other hand, at the initiative of Metropolitan Bishop Siestrzeńcewicz S. (1820) so-called assistance fund was created, the aim of which was to finance the special expenses - poor parishes, seminars, Theological Academy, sick and retired priests, deported bishops. Having the assistance fund at their disposal, both the Ministry of the Interior and the College misappropriated funds, often financing even anti-Church actions or well-known enemies of Polish society (K.E. Sievers). A. Kerensky’s government prepared a draft reform in this field. However, it was not implemented as it was torpedoed by the revolution of 1917.

Opis:
The article is concerned with the income of the vicars in the Pomeranian archdeaconry in the 18th century. The material basis of the activity of parish clergy in modern times was a benefice that the vicar received in return for the pastoral care of the parishioners. The income included such elements as the vicar's own farm, the farm buildings, the land, the population's services, casual profits ("iura stolae") and various property legacies or the right of use (e.g. the right of free fishing or of retail of liquor). In the 18th century in the Pomeranian archdeaconry all these elements could be encountered. However the vicars earned most of their profit from their own farms that were usually based on the four-mansum Parcel (37%). Also the local population's services gave considerable income (36%). Casual profits gave the average vicar 16% of his income. Other elements of the income, like rent for buildings or legacies did not considerably influence the vicar's profits. The auxiliary clergy was employed in the parish by the administrator of the parish, who also paid them. The curate had a constant yearly salary (usually 100 Polish zloty) that was guaranteed in the consistory; he also participated in the casual profits and he had board and laundry (victum et amictum). Priests who deputised for the vicars in managing the parish received a higher pay than curates. The differences between the vicar's and the curate's, or even the deputy's, yearly incomes were quite big. On the average a vicar in the Pomeranian archdeaconry earned 813 Polish zloty, but he had to support the curate or servants, take care of the farm buildings or the presbytery. However, generally the situation of the Pomeranian vicar was not bad, especially compared to other regions.
