Opis:
Church of the Jesuit St Francis Xavier constitutes the major archaeological landmark of the City of Grodno. Its historic architecture is more than three hundred years old. On 15th of December 1990 Pope John Paul II conferred the status of the Minor Basilica upon this Church. Since 1991 this former Jesuit Church has been the Cathedral of the Diocese of Grodno. The foundation stone of the Jesuit Church was blessed by Bishop Mikołaj Słupski on 21st of June 1678. The consecration took place on 6th of December 1705 and was performed by Chełm Bishop Teodor Potocki in the presence of King Augustus II and Tsar Peter the Great. The Church is situated in the centre of the city, nearby the old marketplace. The building was erected on a longitudinal plan in the form of the Latin cross following the style of two-tower and three-aisled basilica with a transept and a dome. It has the two-tower, three-storey façade; the total height of the second and third storey is smaller than the height of the first storey. There are recesses with wooden statues of Saint Francis Xavier (in the middle of the third storey of the facade) and Saints Peter and Paul in the side-arched recesses (on the second storey). There are thirteen altars in the Church: the high altar and twelve side altars. The Altar of Saint Michael the Archangel (in the North Chapel), the Altar of the Congregational Mother of God (Virgin Mary for students), that is situated in the South Chapel, is the only brick altar in this Church. The Altar of Saint Trinity that is situated by the north-east pillar of the dome. The Altar of the Holy Rosary is by the south-east pillar of the dome. The Altar of Saint Stanisław Kostka is situated in the north wing of the transept. The Altar of Saint Kazimierz is found in the south wing of the transept, opposite to the Altar of Saint Stanisław Kostka. The remaining six side altars are situated by the pillars of the nave: the Altar of Saint Tadeusz, the Altar of Scourged Saviour, the Altar of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Altar of Józefat Kuncewicz, the Altar of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Altar of Saint Joseph. The High Altar of Saint Francis Xavier is situated in the presbytery, in the apse of the main nave. It was made from painted wood imitating stone. Johan Christian Schmidt was the author of the High Altar in the Parish Church of Grodno. Above the arcades of the main nave and the presbytery, there are fourteen frescoes in the shape of lying rectangles of 1.5×4.5 m. in size. They present the scenes from the life of Saint Francis Xavier. One of the mural paintings bears the signature: B.I.D.P. 1752. The pulpit was made forty years later than the side altars – as far as both sculptural modelling and colour scheme are concerned. It follows the rococo style. The flooring in the Church is made of Swedish stone. The flooring incorporates seven floor slabs closing off the entry to burial crypts made of the same kind of stone. In 2006 the fire damaged the substantial part of the High Altar, and four sculptures were completely destroyed. The Altar has been conserved. It was painted grey-and-blue to look like a marble. Some elements were also gilded. It was re-opened in 2011.

Opis:
Legislation is an art that takes inspiration from a variety of sources. There is a question: Should the antiquity be one of them? The paper attempts to give the answer. The author gives some proposals of such borrowing of ideas in the realm of marriage and family: making a choice of a candidate for a spouse, engagement and financial aspect of future marriage, contracting marriage without obligatory form, and a role of a father in the family. The presentation leads to the conclusion that the legislator should value culture of antiquity as a source of ideals but while borrowing the antique ideas he must follow the rules needed for such an action. The rules are presented in the paper, as postulates for good legislation.

Das Museum der Provinz der Bernhardinerpatres in Leżajsk besteht seit 1971. Das Hauptziel des Museums besteht im Sammeln, Konservieren, Dokumentieren, Aufbewahren und Zugänglichmachen unschätzbarer Erinnerungsgegenstände des Ordens, die von der jahrhundertelangen Geschichte und der vielfältigen Tätigkeit dieser Gemeinschaft zeugen und anhand ausgewählter Beispiele die wichtigsten Bereiche der von den polnischen Franziskanerobservanten für die Nationalkultur erbrachten Leistungen illustrieren. Diese Ziele realisiert das Museum dadurch, daß es seine Sammlungen den nach Leżajsk kommenden Pilgern und Touristen präsentiert, sowie durch die Zusammenarbeit mit anderen, ähnlichen kirchlichen und staatlichen Einrichtungen in Polen und im Ausland, welche u.a. auf dem gemeinsamen Organisieren temporärer Ausstellungen beruht.

Opis:
The destruction of pagan temples and/or their conversion to churches during the Late Antiquity have been the subject of much study and speculation. For a long period debate on this topic was shaped chiefly by various literary accounts, while archaeological data were somewhat neglected. The purpose of this article is to provide some observations on this issue from a strictly archaeological perspective. The occasion for this are the results of the Polish excavations at Hippos-Sussita. A large basilica that has been unearthed there was built directly on the remains of an earlier Roman temple. The first section of the paper presents elements of the Roman temple which have been identified in various parts of the church area. The second part briefly discusses the other sites in Palestine which have yielded archaeological evidence of churches built over pagan temples.

Opis:
The article discusses the requirements that 4th-century catechumens in the East were expected to meet. Accordingly, the pseudo-epigraphic Church regulations found in the Canons of Hippolitus and in the Apostolic Constitutions are analysed. It can be seen from these texts that their authors showed considerable concern for maintaining high standards associated with the period of the catechumenate; furthermore, they put considerable emphasis on the adherence to the Church regulations and the implementation of Christian standards of thought in daily life.

Neben den Büchern mit liturgischen Texten und notierten Gesängen, die für den Musikwissenschaftler interessant sind, gibt es die besonders im Mittelalter verbreiteten Antiphonäre in denen sich die Vielfalt der liturgischen und musikalischen Traditionen widerspiegelt. Unser Buch - Antiphonar ms. b. s. - dient der Vorbereitung der Liturgie in der Kathedrale in Plock; es befaßt sich ausführlich mit der Zelebration des Stundengebets und bringt Informationen über das Feiern von Andachten. Der Kodex befindet sich zur Zeit im Diözesanmuseum in Plock. Diese Handschrift zählt zusammen 73 Blätter im Format 560 mm x 380 mm. Der Kodex wurde in zwei zerstörte Bretter eingebunden. Aufgrund der Informationen, die innerhalb des Buches stehen, hat man festgestellt, dass der Kodex nochmals im Jahre 1509 eingebunden wurde. Diese Handschrift trägt die Spuren der Beschädigungen in Form von Löchern, Verschmutzungen usw. Der Kodex besitzt aktuell eine Miniatur. Am wahrscheinlichsten besaß er mehrere Miniaturen, weil einige Seiten die Spuren der mechanischen Beschädigungen tragen. Das könnte bedeuten, dass es schon früher Miniaturen gegeben hat. Dieser Kodex wurde durch die kaligraphische Textur geschrieben. Die Texte sind aus dem Heiligenkalender des Monats November entnommen. Der Kodex nennt 10 Heilige. Das bedeutet, dass im Plocker Dom folgende Offizien gesungen wurden: Am 11. November zu Ehren des hl. Martinus, am 13. November zu Ehren des HI. Briccius, am 19. November zu Ehren der HI. Elisabeth, am 22. November zu Ehren der HI. Cecilie, am 23. November zu Ehren des HI. Clementis, am 24. November zu Ehren des HI. Chrisogoni, am 25. November zu Ehren der HI. Katharine und am 29. November zu Ehren der HI. Saturnini, Maurii und Darie. Dieser Kodex war sehr wahrscheinlich einer von vielen Büchern, die während der Liturgie im Dom benutzt wurden. Die Plocker Büchersammlung kennt heute kein ähnliches Exemplar über die Offizien anderer Monate. Dieses Buch zeigt, dass das feierliche Stundengebet im Dom zu Plock das ganze Jahr über gesungen wurde.

Opis:
Zachowania magiczne były od niepamiętnych czasów elementem kultury. Świadectwa w postaci amuletów, różnych narzędzi czy zaklęć systematycznie są odkrywane. Magia przenikając w świat religii, stawała się jej elementem, z czasem aż do tego stopnia, że w zależności od okresu historycznego, nie sposób odróżnić jednej od drugiej. W niniejszym artykule zostały poddanie analizie, z perspektywy ustawodawstwa kościelnego, praktyki magiczne szkodzące zdrowiu i życiu. Oczywiście przepisy prawne mają na celu eliminację błędów i zagrożeń przez co przedstawiają obraz jednostronny nie oddający wszystkich aspektów życia. Niewątpliwie jednak odnoszą się do zagrożeń realnych i przez to poszerzają wiedzę o epoce. W przedstawionym tekście wzięto pod uwagę takie praktyki magiczne, które celowo i umyślnie miały szkodzić konkretnym osobom.

Sobór Nicejski I (325) uznać należy za wydarzenie przełomowe w historii Kościoła i chrześcijaństwa. Podjęte tam decyzje wywarły olbrzymi wpływ na rozwój nowej religii rzymskiej, jak również na wydarzenia polityczne. Jedną z kluczowych postaci Soboru jest Konstantyn I Wielki (306-337). Cesarz „porzucił” oficjalnych bogów Romanitas i opowiedział się za Chrystusem. Nawrócenie Konstantyna miało jednak formę przyjęcia chrześcijańskiego Boga zgodnie z rzymską mentalnością. Celem artykułu było ukazanie wkładu Konstantyna w zwołanie Soboru Nicejskiego, jego przebieg oraz końcowe postanowienia. Przedstawiono szczegóły tego wydarzenia z uwzględnieniem podobieństw i różnic w przekazach historyków Kościoła starożytnego: Sokratesa Scholastyka, Sozomena, Filostorgiusza oraz Teodoreta z Cyru. Zwięzłe omówienie historii Soboru wyjaśnia okoliczności jego zwołania, przebieg, znaczenie podjętych tam postanowień.
The Council of Nicaea I (325) should be considered as a breakthrough event in the history of the Church and Christianity. Decisions taken there had a huge impact on the development of the new Roman religion as well as on political events. One of the key figures of the Council is Constantine the Great (306-337). The emperor “abandoned” the official Romanitas deities and opted for Christ. Constantine’s conversion, however, took the form of receiving Christian God in accordance with the Roman mentality. The purpose of the article is to show the role of Constantine in the convocation of the Council of Nicaea (325), its course and final provisions. Details of this event were presented, taking into account the similarities and differences in the accounts of historians of the ancient Church: Socrates Scholastic, Sozomen, Philostorgius and Theodoret of Cyrus. A brief discussion of the history of the Council explains the circumstances of its convocation, its course, and the significance of its provisions.
