    The main purpose of the article is to analyse the model of an ideal Pole and patriot created in the poetry addressed to children written by Michalina Chelmońska-Szczepankowska, a forgotten poet of the Young Poland period. Her works are a perfect example of patriotic education typical to the second half of nineteenth century. The poet consciously chooses Polish saints, perfect rulers, scientists and men of letters, who in her opinion were the best examples of patriotism. Her goal is to awake national pride in young people. This model of patriotic education has also been continued in modern times. Author of the text considers its topicality in contemporary realities and contemplates which values popularised by Chełmońska-Szczepankowska may become the cure for the modern Polish complex of inferiority.

    Poetry is heavily invested with playfulness. Drawing on the most recent critical discourse on children’s poetry, the present study aims to showcase that the significant form of play can be manifested in many ways in children’s poetry and also be traced in poetic language as playful humor and intense verbalplay. For this purpose, a cluster of poems are addressed, poems been found in poetic anthologies for children (“Overheard on a Saltmarsh”), in the street (“Bam Chi Chi La La: London, 1969”) in the playground (“I scream...”) and in single-poet collections (“Jamie Dodgers aren’t the only fruit”, “Skig the Warrior”). All poems reveal some of the essential qualities of children’s poetry and most importantly its overall playful character materialized both in linguistic and conceptual terms. The children’s poem “Come on into my tropical garden” written by the British- C aribbean poet Grace Nichols is closely analyzed as a manifestation of poetry’s playful spirit. The exuberance of its rhetoric and sound, its rhythmical feeling and the rich texture of its verses are conveyed through a well-embodied structure and form. What is more, the poem is thoroughly permeated by play as a core element both in thematics and figurative language. The poet uses and reappropriates the “garden” as a powerful metaphor for children’s poetry, placing the child at the very center of a symbolic natural landscape to celebrate nature’s delights and to exercise her insatiable appetite for play.

    Among numerous books of poetry for children written by Danuta Wawiłow – famous XXth  century Polish poet and writer – one book is special: Poems for Naughty Children  [Wiersze dla niegrzecznych dzieci] published in 1987. The book is unique not only because of the poetical qualities it represents – rhythmicity, melodiousness, catchiness, melancholy and lyricism equally with pure nonsense, absurdity, grotesque, (black) humour and numerous equivoques and puns, which are characteristic for Wawiłow’s poetical works; above all else Poems for Naughty Children  is a collection of translations of the traditional English nursery rhymes, made by Danuta Wawiłow, who claimed more than once that she was a translator long before she had become a writer. The article aims to explore Wawiłow’s translation work which (up to now) remains almost unknown and un-described in Polish theoretical discourse. Moreover, the author presents the outcome of her research conducted to find “missing originals” of translated nursery rhymes, offers the classification of them and undertakes critical reflection over translation strategy adopted by Danuta Wawiłow.

    In the following article the author’s aim is to analyze how originals and translations influence the reader’s imagination. In fact, an average reader’s imaginative potential cannot be verified by any means available to a linguist. However, imagination is affected by images created by linguistic units embedded in a text. The article brings an attempt at identifying those elements of the original and translation that have the potential to activate colours and tints in a child’s imagination. Then, the author gauges whether the impressions made by the texts in this respect are comparable or different. The research material is a poem by Kornei Chukovsky, “Tarakanishche” (“Cock-the-Roach”), and its Polish translation, “Karaluszysko”. The analysis carried out leads to the conclusion that the target text contains elements that can affect the young reader’s imagination more strongly. This is the result of using exclamatory sentences, emotionally loaded vocabulary, sensory words and more detailed imagery. The greater complexity of the images in the translation creates more vivid mental pictures and potentially leads to a slightly different reception.
    Zaprezentowany artykuł został poświęcony badaniu jednostek językowych, które potencjalnie mogą wpłynąć na wyobraźnię dziecka jako odbiorcy tekstu literackiego. Materiałem analizy jest wiersz K. Czukowskiego Тараканище oraz jego przekład na język polski – Karaluszysko. Badanie bogactwa i siły wyobraźni dziecka, która nie zna granic, jest niemożliwe przy wykorzystaniu narzędzi językoznawczych. Jednak analiza zawartości leksykalnej tekstu literackiego pozwala na wyekscerpowanie takich jednostek, które w sposób bezpośredni mogą oddziaływać na emocje dziecka. Porównanie badanych tekstów pozwoliło na wniosek, że tekst przekładu może znacznie silniej wpłynąć na wyobraźnię niedorosłego odbiorcy. Potencjał taki mają m.in. zdania wykrzyknikowe, leksyka nacechowana emocjonalnie oraz leksyka o charakterze sensorycznym. Pod ich wpływem „kolory” dziecięcej wyobraźni stają się bardziej wyraziste.

    Le thème de l’amour occupe une place importante dans la poésie française pour les enfants, en prenant des aspects très divers. L’amour qui lie parents et enfants est le mieux représenté. Les poètes transmettent cet amour à l’aide de moyens d’expression variés : un lexique affectif, des noms hypocoristiques, le langage enfantin ; les tropes (la métaphore, la personnification, etc.) permettent d’exprimer les différentes facettes de l’amour. Les poètes s’inspirent des berceuses françaises traditionnelles. Les poèmes apprennent aux petits lecteurs à choyer leur famille, leurs amis, leur pays natal, la nature, les animaux, la vie. Ce lyrisme n’exclut pas que la poésie pour les jeunes soit empreinte d’humour et d’espièglerie. Pour évoquer les actions des enfants indisciplinés, les poètes recourent à un lexique argotique et familier. Le mélange des registres ajoute au charme de ces poèmes. Les différents visages de l’amour font l’objet d’une riche gamme de moyens d’expression qui reflètent toute la diversité des émotions et des sentiments.
    The theme of love occupies an important place in contemporary French children’s poetry, being present in very different aspects. The best represented one is love between parents and children. Affective vocabulary, diminutives and childish language indicate a strong emotional interaction between mother and child; tropes (metaphors, personifications etc.) express different facets of love. Poets are sometimes inspired by traditional French lullabies. Full of love, poems teach little readers to appreciate their family, their friends, their homeland, nature, animals, and life. Lyricism, however, does not exclude humour and playfulness. Children love to play and to fool around, and to evoke their mischievous behaviour, poets often recur to slang and familiar vocabulary. The mixture of registers adds to the charm of the poems, whereas a wide range of expressive means reflects the diversity of emotions and feelings.

    The connection between the avant-garde and Polish children’s literature may seem somewhat tenuous, since the former was generally considered, not without a reason, secondary and peripheral to mainstream literature. For a long time, Polish children’s literature, whose main aim was to serve educational and patriotic purposes, was perceived in such a way, which makes Julian Tuwim’s works even more exceptional. Tuwim revolutionized the traditional approach to poetry for children and created a literary style that was by no means inferior to experimental literature for adults. This article analyses two aspects of the innovativeness of Tuwim’s poetry: a) a radical departure from the former literary patterns and conventions that were typical of works for children and b) a creative development of the experiments first introduced by representatives of such avant-garde movements as Futurism and Surrealism.

    The topic of this paper is Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna Children’s Rhymes – a book of poetic miniatures for children, to which Karol Szymanowski composed a set of songs for voice and piano entitled Children’s Rhymes Op. 49 in memory of his late niece Alusia. The author of this paper discusses the circumstances of the work’s composition and recalls the conflict between the poetess and the composer that arose when he got the songs published by the Universal-Edition publishing house without her permission. Next, the autor focuses on an intersemiotic analysis of the musical interpretation of the poems (dynamic, rythmical, agogic and melodic modifications), based on the conception of illustrating text with the use of sounds.
    Szkic poświęcony jest Rymom dziecięcym Kazimiery Iłłakowiczówny – tomikowi miniatur poetyckich przeznaczonych dla dzieci, do których Karol Szymanowski skomponował cykl pieśni na głos i fortepian pt. Rymy dziecięce op. 49 zadedykowanych zmarłej siostrzenicy – Pamięci Alusi. Autorka szkicu przywołuje okoliczności napisania cyklu oraz wspomina o konflikcie, jaki powstał między poetką a kompozytorem, który bez zgody autorki wydał pieśni w wydawnictwie Universal-Edition. W dalszej części szkicu Autorka skupia uwagę na intersemiotycznej analizie muzycznego przekładu wierszy (zabiegi dynamiczne, rytmiczne, agogiczne oraz melodyczne), w którym przejawia się kompozytorski zamysł ilustrowania tekstu dźwiękami.

    Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie muzycznej realizacji tekstu literackiego. Omawia różne aspekty opracowania literatury dziecięcej, wzbogaconej czy dookreślonej muzyczną interpretacją wokalno-instrumentalną lub umuzycznieniem. Celem analizy teoretycznej ujętej w tekście jest przedstawienie problematyki umuzycznienia i etapów przygotowujących poprzez słuchanie repertuaru wokalno-instrumentalnego pieśni dziecięcej. Słowno-muzyczne opracowania artystyczne z użyciem różnych środków wyrazu muzycznego przysparzają doświadczeń muzycznych młodemu słuchaczowi. Deskrypcja, komparatystyka oraz interpretacja umożliwiły prześledzenie i zasygnalizowanie poruszanego zagadnienia. Kwerenda źródeł pozwoliła na analizę poszczególnych przykładów muzycznych i literackich w aspekcie zagadnienia relacji słowa do muzyki i związków zachodzących między nimi na przykładzie wybranego repertuaru dziecięcego. Rozważania na temat umuzycznienia poprzedza etap słuchania muzyki płynącej z wierszy, które jest aktywną odpowiedzią odbiorcy na komunikat zawarty lub interpretowany w poezji dziecięcej. Następuje uchwycenie idei utworu przeznaczonego dla dziecka, która przełożona jest na dźwięki, a co za tym idzie, wymaga odpowiedniego wyboru instrumentu. Mamy wówczas do czynienia z konfrontacją świata przedstawionego w utworze z rzeczywistością pozaliteracką ‒ muzyczną. Urzeczywistnienie idei utworu następuje poprzez dźwięki, brzmienia, barwy instrumentu odpowiednio dobranego. Intencjonalność zawarta w słowie przekłada się na konkretne środki wyrazu muzycznego, następuje sprecyzowanie wizualizacji wyobraźni i uszczegółowienie w kreacji artystycznej. Transponowanie słowa na dźwięki muzyczne wymaga znajomości języka muzycznego, który wprowadza w świat humanistycznych wartości uniwersalnych, ułatwia rozumienie, aktywizuje w procesie odbioru i zachęca do podejmowania własnej kreacji artystycznej.
    The article addresses the issue of setting a literary text to music. It discusses various aspects of preparing learning material based on children’s literature that is enriched or defined by musical interpretation, either vocal and instrumental or musical adaptation. The theoretical analysis included in the text focuses on presenting problems connected with musical adaptation and stages designed to prepare them through listening to the vocal and instrumental repertoire of children’s songs. By applying various means of musical expression, verbal and musical artistic adaptations provide a musical experience to young audience. Descriptive, comparative and interpretive studies have made it possible to trace and signal the subject of a given literary text. Carrying out this study has allowed an analysis of particular musical and literary examples in terms of the relationship between words and music as well as the relationship between the two on the example of children’s repertoire selected for the purpose. Considerations regarding setting a literary text to music are preceded by the stage of listening to the melody of the verses themselves, which constitutes an active response of the recipient to the message contained or interpreted in children’s poetry. What follows is the attaining of the idea of a given song addressed to a child it gets translated into sounds and, consequently, requires the right choice of instrument. We are then dealing with the confrontation of the world presented in the piece with a non-literary reality – music. The realization of the idea of the song takes place through the sounds and tones produced by instruments chosen appropriately. Intentionalism in words translates into specific means of musical expression and thus the imagined becomes more precisely visible and the artistic creation is presented in more detail. Transposing words into musical sounds requires knowledge of the musical language that introduces one into the world of universal humanistic values, facilitates understanding, activates the reception process, and encourages them to indulge in one’s own artistic activity.

    W artykule zostały przedstawione propozycje lekturowe dla dzieci, przede wszystkim uczniów szkoły podstawowej. Autorka wychodzi z założenia, że powinny to być książki o dużych wartościach artystycznych, zarówno literackich, jak i plastycznych, atrakcyjne ze względu na swoją formę, treść, język. Te kryteria spełnia literatura współczesna, której charakterystyka została szkicowo zaprezentowana w artykule. Kolejno opisane zostały książki obrazkowe, komiksy, tomiki poetyckie. Autorka przedstawiła także kryteria wyboru dobrych książek dla dzieci oraz źródła, do jakich mogą sięgnąć nauczyciel, bibliotekarz czy rodzic w poszukiwaniu wiarygodnych informacji o najnowszej literaturze dziecięcej.
    The article presents examples of books for obligatory reading, especially for children in a primary school. The author makes an assumption that such books should be of significant artistic value, both of literary text and illustrations, and attractive in form, subject and language. These criteria are fulfilled by contemporary literature which is characterized shortly in the article. Picture books, comic-books, books with poetry are described consequently. The author advises also how to choose good books for children, what criteria to follow. She presents sources of information for teachers, librarians, parents, where they can find trustworthy reviews on latest children’s literature.

    This article portrays a pair of artistically gifted women, Wanda Młodnicka née Monné (1850–1923) and her daughter Maryla Wolska (1873–1930), each with a diverse range of interests, including painting, music, and, first and foremost, literature. Their achieve-ment (both original works and translations) achievement has been largely forgotten. This article attempts to find out what inspired the two women, to identify those points of their artistic endeavor they had in common and those that determined their individual profiles, while paying special attention to the mother-daughter relationship.
