Opis:
Focusing on identity formation amongst child migrants, this paper reflects on the experiences of unaccompanied minors sent from Britain to Australia in the 20th Century. Between 1947-1967 3170 children are understood to have been exported to Australia, making Britain the only country in the world known to have exported children during peace time. Most of these children came from British care homes to which they had been entrusted by their families or social workers. The majority of exported children were from working class backgrounds and many still had living parents, or other close family, in the UK. Children as young as four were sent to train as farm labourers and domestic staff, simultaneously relieving the burden of providing for these children from the British Government, and increasing the white population in ‘underpopulated’ Australia. The paper presents thematic analysis of four published sources produced for a wide readership: two published memoirs and two young adult novels. The paper seeks to reflect on the impact of forced transnational migration on the children’s identity formation as new Australians.

When discussing migration processes, the problem of children and minors is often disregarded, although global data show the growing number of processes in which they participate. In 2017, it was estimated that 30 million children live outside their country of origin. This demonstrates the importance of migration in which the youngest generation participates. The aim of the review article is to show a broad context of the research undertaken in the literature on the situation of children participating in migration. Such situations include changes in basic social relationships, education process, and consequences and health risks of children. In addition, it was noted that the scale of these changes and their specific character depends on the manner in which a child participates in migration. Three situations were taken into account: a child in family migration, a single migrant child and a child left in their home country by one or both of the migrating parents.

Opis:
Both migration and parenthood, and – in particular – motherhood, belong to the central events in a human life, being both mutually entangled, and affecting the wider society. Transnational families become involved in a vivid discourse dedicated to a model of a perfect family, perfect woman, and perfect motherhood. Thus, an everyday life of transnational mothers assumes negotiations between geography, economy, social and family roles. New works on the topic forefront appreciation of both productive and reproductive female roles, which find a spectacular reflection in migrant family scholarship. Migration symptomatically reveals the diversity and the complexity of the women’s social roles and the strategies of their fulfillment. In our paper we focus on the functioning of Ukrainian transnational families. By supplying narrations of the migrant women, we analyze their life trajectories, the manner in which a migration decision is taken, the stories of parenthood, performance of caretaking, maintenance of family ties (based on indirect rather than direct relations) and social ties.

Globalization increased the number of transnational families all over the world. The way of life created by transnationalism leads to changes in family relationships, creates a specific dynamics, implies care at distance and produces various forms of parenting. Starting from the analysis of transnational families between Angola and Portugal, the aim of this paper is to understand the effects of migration on parent-child relationship trying to perceive how parenting at a distance is conceived by the actors: migrant parents in Portugal and children in Angola. Drawing on interviews made with migrant parents and children, the paper explores the functioning of the parental relationship at distance.

The contribution aims to illustrate the evolution of national and European legislation on the subject of the protection of unaccompanied minors; the effectiveness of the Italian discipline and the French one in a comparative perspective as well as the European strategy are the core of the analysis. The adoption of the Italian Law 7 Aprile 2017 n. 47, so called Zampa Law, represents an important step towards the recognition of a complete protection of migrant child in the national background; the study on the enforcement of the reform will allow the evaluation of the Italian legal system’s efficiency. On the other hand, I will analyze the remedies offered by the French system; in this context the regulation concerning children in civil code gets along with different legal source. Particular attention will be paid to the state of art in the European context looking for common rules or guidelines. The analysis of national and European results will be the objective of some conclusive remarks.

Występuje rozluźnienie więzi emocjonalnych, a często rozkład rodziny.
Labour migrations are an integral part of the modern world. The opening of borders and labour markets resulted in increasing dynamism of searching for a better life, often aimed at consumption. Migration of parent/parents abroad in search of work creates far-reaching consequences for the functioning of the family. There is the loosening of emotional bonds, and often-family breakdown. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine to what extent the migration of the parent/parents affects the family situation of the child in middle school. The study was conducted from February to May 2012, among 612 middle school students from Pomeranian province.

Opis:
This exploratory study investigated whether the timing of childhood migrations influenced the likelihood of identity struggles with a group of seven individuals, aged 22-30. It examined the migration experiences and identities of four participants who migrated prior to adolescence, and three who relocated during adolescence. The research was underwritten by a social constructionist epistemology. The methodology integrated aspects of narrative psychology, symbolic interactionism and thematic analysis to facilitate the exploration of both individual differences and social factors. The analysis was guided by the application of established social psychological theories on group membership and identity. The study demonstrated that age at migration influenced the likelihood of identity struggles within the sample and that secure membership of at least one cultural group was needed to avoid identity struggles. Participants who migrated or changed school during adolescence had more difficulties with language acquisition and establishing friendships; as social groups were less permeable and teasing more prominent. Their acculturation was slower and they were not readily accepted as native members of their new culture by native peers. Some were perceived as foreigners by native members of both their new and parental cultures, which made a sense of belonging and identity difficult to establish.

This article discusses how former child refugees from Yugoslav wars, who have permanently resettled in Norway, narrate their past refugee experiences, and how they negotiate their belonging and integration in the present. The article argues that child refugees are particularly important research subjects in the field of migration and forced migration studies: refugees and forced migrants are the most vulnerable of all migrants, while children are the most vulnerable and powerless among all forced migrants. Turning back to the past experiences and memories of people who went through this type of experience in the not so distant past, might helps us understand what challenges the numerous refugees of today are facing, and help answer what receiving societies can do in response to the arrival of the new refugees.

Opis:
Background. This article presents results of research about psychophysiological adaptation of children who migrated from the northern to the southern regions of Siberia. The purpose of this study was to create measures that can be used to promote health among migrants. Material and methods. We examined 157 children between the ages of 11-16. Roughly half (n=74) were child migrants, and the remainder (n=83) were children who lived constantly in region of southern Siberia. Psychophysiological adaptation was assessed by methods of Eysenck, Rogov, Belokon and Kuberger. Results. Assessment of parameters allowed us to reveal multidirectional results in groups of children. The questionnaire developed by Eysenck showed the predominance of the extroverted type of personality among patients, but emotional instability was more often recorded among child migrants (p=0.0007). Child migrants took significantly longer to complete psychological tests, including tests of attention (p=0.0042) and verbal logical thinking (p<0.001). Vegetative homeostasis was characterized by a higher level of sympathetic tonic initial vegetative tone (p=0.0172), hyper sympathetic tonic variant of vegetative reactivity (p=0.0377), and an altered type of hemodynamic reaction to the clinoorthostatic test (50% of cases). Conclusions. The high frequency of emotional instability, slower speed of logical thinking possesses, and sympathetic tonic orientation of vegetative homeostasis parameters are distinctive features of child migrants. Children with deviations in psychophysiological parameters are at high risk of developing psychosomatic pathology. Therefore, preventive measures are necessary to help promote health among child migrants.
Wprowadzenie. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących adaptacji psychofizjologicznej dzieci migrujących z północnych do południowych regionów Syberii. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. Ocena wielu parametrów pozwoliła na ujawnienie wielokierunkowych wyników w grupach dzieci. Dane z kwestionariusza Eysencka wykazały przewagę ekstrawertycznego typu osobowości wśród dzieci obu grup, ale niestabilność emocjonalną częściej odnotowywano wśród dzieci migrantów (p=0,0007). Migranci spędzali znacznie więcej czasu na wykonywaniu testów psychologicznych: ilościowy wskaźnik uwagi (p=0,0042) i logiczne myślenie werbalne (p<0,001). Wegetatywna homeostaza charakteryzowała się wyższym poziomem wegetatywnego tonicznego napięcia początkowego (p=0,0172), hipersympatycznym wariantem tonicznej reaktywności wegetatywnej (p=0,0377), zmienionym typem reakcji hemodynamicznej na test ortostatyczny (50% przypadków). Wnioski. Wysoka częstotliwość niestabilności emocjonalnej, niski poziom prędkości myślenia logicznego, sympatyczna toniczna orientacja wegetatywnych parametrów homeostazy są charakterystycznymi cechami psychofizjologicznymi dzieci migrantów. Dzieci z odchyleniami parametrów psychofizjologicznych posiadają wysokie ryzyko rozwoju zaburzeń psychosomatycznych i dlatego konieczne jest wprowadzenie metod i środków profilaktycznych na rzecz promocji zdrowia.

Aim: The aim of the study was to analyze mental well-being, especially anxiety and a sense of loneliness of Polish children temporarily separated from their parent or parents who are migrating for economic reasons, and children who went abroad with their parents. Methods: Explicit Anxiety Scale was used to measure anxiety “Jaki Jesteś?” (“What are you like?” by Skrzypek and Choynowski) (textbook by Zwierzyńska, Matuszewski, 2007) and the Polish versions of the UCLA Loneliness Scale were used to measure loneliness (by Russell, Peplau, & Cutrona, adapted by Rembowski, 1992). Test results were supplemented with an interview with children. 320 children from different types of migrant families participated in the study. Results: the highest level of anxiety is felt by children temporarily separated from their mother, and children who, together with their parents, went abroad and find it difficult to adapt to the new environment. The duration of emigration was an important factor. Most children in the sample ‒ regardless of the type of migratory family ‒ feel lonely, do not feel strong ties with close relatives, do not feel understood by them, do not feel associated with a peer group. Conclusion: The results of the research indicate the necessity to take actions in the area of institutional and legal as well as psychological support for families and children both in the situation of going abroad and returning from migration. The most important directions of activities concerning the creation of environmental forms of separation compensation and the environmental assistance system for the migration family are indicated at the stage of prevention related to people planning trips.

Opis:
Return migration has probably been granted the lowest attention in the field of family language policy (FLP). The current paper seeks to address this gap in the research and explores the dynamics of FLP of a Polish family in the context of their temporary migration to Germany and return migration to Poland. The authors investigate how mobility affects FLP, especially towards L1 (Polish) and L2 (German) in the context of migration and return migration. The study takes a qualitative, interview-based study design, supported by the language portrait technique. An analysis of the interview data has evidenced the parents’ strong support for the maintenance and development of L1 throughout the whole process of migration and return migration and the lack of it in the case of L2 after the return to Poland. The results have also evidenced that individuals in a family, including children, have significant autonomy and agency and can shape their independ- ent FLPs, which are aligned neither with their parents nor siblings.

Local mobility has become a typical attribute of today’s global citizen. The enlargement of the EU on may1st 2004 by new members (including Poland) had a significant impact on the general behavior of migrants, be it in a growing intensity and dynamics of the migration streams as well as the sectorial and spatial distribution of the migrants. New tendencies of mobility emerged, concerning both the sheer quantity of outbound travelers as well as some recent peculiarities of this migration. The latest migration tendencies from Poland mirror global patterns as well as the new possibilities that opened up after the country’s EU accession. Post-accession mobility is characterized by an elaborate and devised system of migrant behavior adapted to the respective situations, which I will refer to as “migration strategies.” This paper focuses on the present migration patterns of expatriot Polish citizens.

One of the most influential decisions that immigrant parents must make for their children involves establishing a set of rules and norms governing what language(s) they will be raised with and how they will acquire proficiency in the dominant languages of the host society, a process known as family language policy. Such decisions can have long lasting effects for immigrant children into adulthood by influencing their integration into the host society and transition towards adult life. Using retrospective, in-depth interview data collected from young immigrant adults, this study explores the ways that parental decisions made throughout an immigrant child’s life course regarding language use and learning shape their multilingual identity and attitude towards the use of multiple languages in their everyday adult life. Findings suggest that the linguistic decisions parents make in the early years of an immigrant youths’ life have lasting impacts on them in terms of connecting to family members and culture in adulthood. We found that when parents created either a flexible or strict family language policy, such policies produced more positive experiences in the migration and early settlement process for immigrant youth compared to those whose parents did not form a family language policy.

Opis:
This paper draws on a qualitative study of Polish parents in thirty families who migrated to Scotland after Poland’s accession to the EU in 2004. It investigates the different ways in which these parents negotiate child-care and paid work, looking at how their preferences and choices relate to social and policy norms in Poland and the UK, to their own personal life trajectories, and to the contexts and opportunities available to them in Scotland. In my analysis, I make use of theory relating to labour market change and to women’s preferences in work, drawing on Catherine Hakim’s ‘Preference Theory’. I look at the relevance of historical influences and norms stemming from communism and Catholicism in Poland, as well as the more recent impact of neoliberalism, on paid work and child-care strategies. In my analysis, I highlight in particular the importance placed by parents on the opportunities provided by the more flexible labour market, greater availability of parttime work and easier access to vocational training for parents in the UK than in Poland. To assist analysis, I distinguish three family types within my study group: first, young families in which parents migrated singly and subsequently started families in the UK; second, older families who migrated with school-age children in search of a better standard of living; and third, professional or skilled parents who migrated to take up employment in their field in the UK. I find that each type of family is associated with a different pattern of child-care and employment in the UK and explore how migration has impacted on parents’ ability to enact their chosen lifestyle.
