    Monstrosity has its recognized place in cultural narratives but in philosophical discourse it remains mostly untouched. In my paper I make an attempt at phenomenological inquiry into the experience of the Other’s monstrous body. I am beginning with some remarks concerning Georges Canguilhem and Michel Foucault, the philosophers who devoted some attention to the problem of monstrosity and the monstrous, but my analysis is mainly based on the works of Bernhard Waldenfels, Edmund Husserl and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Waldenfels emphasizes that the corporeal self is somehow perceived as alien, always somewhat distanced and not totally graspable. He also argues that the closer the Other, the stronger activation of the boundary between the spheres of the ownness and the alienness is caused. A promising framework for the analysis of the ambivalent reaction brought about by the encounter with a monstrous human body can be provided by Husserl’s phenomenological inquiry into the process of pairing, developed in his Cartesian meditations. It seems that in this experience the pairing process is frustrating and deranged because the process of apperception is disturbed by a cluster of untypical or quite unique characteristics of the monstrous body. In result, its sense remains unclear, puzzling and challenging. Interesting light on the experience of the Other’s monstrous body could shed Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, especially the ideas of flesh and chiasm outlined in his last work. The radical character of the monster, while does not render it something totally different from the own, elucidates, however, the contingency of the order under which the human corporeality is subsumed.

    In Through Vegetal Being, Luce Irigaray writes about the importance of “cultivating and sharing life between all” as it will result in “the blossoming of all beings.” This perspective seems to reside at the centre of Michèle Roberts’s writing. Entangled in the natural world, her characters demonstrate an awareness of the necessity of grounding. Mud, this mixture of water and soil, is a recurrent motif, and a powerful symbol of remaining close to the earth. It also exemplifies the collapse of binaries frequently occurring in Roberts’s texts, including the intertwining of human and nonhuman beings particularly present in her poetry. Offering a weave of the spiritual and the worldly, Roberts frequently foregrounds our corporeal existence, which constitutes a major theme in her work. Sensual and fleshly, her texts remain “in the tangle of brambles” (The Heretic’s Feast 6), immersed in the shivering, shifting, changing world, with all its intensities and sensations. This essay explores the significance of the vegetal and animal in the constitution of individual identity in Michèle Roberts’s poetic work. The analysis will focus on the relation of the self with the world, established in the spirit of cultivating and sharing.

    If, as Maurice Merleau-Ponty writes, “True philosophy consists in relearning to look at the world,” and if Merleau-Ponty is accordingly often described as a philosopher of the body or a philosopher of painting, how are we to understand the apparently new turn to music that Merleau-Ponty makes toward the end of the final completed chapter, entitled “The Intertwining—The Chiasm,” of The Visible and the Invisible? I argue that the course of the “Chiasm” chapter moves from a concern for the reciprocal intertwining of body and world to a concern for the Ineinander of temporality. Thus, there are two dimensions involved in forming Merleau-Ponty’s chiastic structure of the flesh: the fecundity of the sensible world in the dimension of simultaneity and the transcendence of the subject in the dimension of succession. The aim of this article is to explore the part of this structure that pertains to the temporal movement of transcendental intersubjectivity. Focusing on Merleau-Ponty’s adaptation of Husserl’s term, Ineinander, I trace the musical context of the term from Merleau-Ponty’s course notes, “Philosophie aujourd’hui” to the final passages from the “Chiasm” chapter of The Visible and the Invisible, understanding the Ineinander as it pertains to the relation of past and present. Contrary to the overflowing sense of presence experienced by the body in the world, the Ineinander is characterized by succession—by the écart—and finds its natural expression in the movement of music. Thus, the chiastic structure at the heart of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of the flesh expresses not only the immersion of a body in the world that sees; it expresses also, as that which is no longer and that which is to come, a creative, melodic movement of time.

    This article offers a rhetorical perspective on the Swedish project of nuclear waste management – how inventio has been shaped throughout the project, with focus on alignment of perspectives and adaptation of argument to achieve a solution to an urgent problem – fi nding a location for spent nuclear fuel repository. The study fi nds that the organizations representing the “environmental” perspective have gradually (1970s-2010s) integrated the argumentation of the nuclear industry into their own position. Also the treatment of “environment” as a material ground for argument has changed over the years – from a separated topic for the critics of the repository project, to a commonplace argument, and from a local value to a political notion.
    Niniejszy artykuł przyjmuje perspektywę retoryczną w badaniu dyskursu na temat odpadów radioaktywnych w Szwecji. Sprawdza on jak kształtowane jest inventio w publicznej debacie nad lokalizacją depozytu odpadów nuklearnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem procesu adaptacji argumentów i uzgadniania wspólnych pozycji miedzy stroną pro-ekologiczną i stroną instytucjonalną. Badanie wykazuje jak organizacje ekologiczne stopniowo (od lat 70. XX w. do drugiego dziesięciolecia XXI w.) zintegrowały swoją argumentację z postulatami przemysłu nuklearnego. Zmieniało się między innymi użycie argumentu ochrony środowiska naturalnego: z kluczowej przesłanki materialnej do formalnego toposu, oraz z wartości lokalnej wspólnoty po konstrukt polityczny.

    Opis:
    Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, von Recklinghausen’s disease) is known to be the neurocutaneous disease, called phacomatoses. It is one of the most common inherited autosomal dominant disorder, occurring with a frequency of approximately 1:3000 births. The typical symptoms of NF1 are café au lait spots, axillary, groin freckling, neurofibromas and Lisch nodules on the irises. In patients also more frequently than in the general population is observed occurrence of benign and malignant tumours. The most common tumour in the case of NF1, approximately in 15-20% of patients, is visual pathway glioma, known as capillary astrocytoma, which involves visual nerves and/or the optic chiasm and leads to visual field loss. The visual pathway gliomas grow slowly, sometimes can be asymptomatic and rarely take an aggressive form, and only one third of patients require surgery. Among other cancers in patients with NF1 we also have: sarcoma of peripheral nerves, striated cell sarcoma, a pheochromocytoma, carcinoid of the duodenum, nonlymphocytic leukaemia. Other symptoms of NF1 include dysplasia and bone deformities, macrocephaly, short height, mental retardation, impaired visual-spatial orientation, poorer memory, dyslexia, and epilepsy. We present a case of 19-year-old patient diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 with coexisting optic chiasm glioma and drug resistant epilepsy.
    Nerwiakowłókniakowatość typu 1. (NF1, choroba von Recklinghausena) jest zaliczana do schorzeń nerwowo-skórnych, tzw. fakomatoz. Jest to jedno z najczęstszych zaburzeń dziedziczonych autosomalnie dominująco, występujące z częstością około 1:3000 urodzeń. Typowe objawy NF1 to przebarwienia skórne typu „kawa z mlekiem”, piegi w okolicach pach i pachwin, nerwiakowłókniaki oraz guzki Lischa na tęczówkach. U pacjentów częściej niż w populacji ogólnej obserwuje się również występowanie zarówno nowotworów łagodnych, jak i złośliwych. Guzem najczęściej spotykanym w przypadku NF1 (tj. u około 15-20% pacjentów) jest glejak drogi wzrokowej, tzw. gwiaździak włosowaty, który zajmuje nerwy wzrokowe i/lub skrzyżowanie nerwów wzrokowych oraz prowadzi do ubytków w polu widzenia. Glejaki drogi wzrokowej rosną powoli, niekiedy mogą być bezobjawowe, rzadko przybierają agresywną formę i tylko jedna trzecia pacjentów wymaga leczenia operacyjnego. Wśród innych nowotworów u chorych z NF1 spotykamy również: mięsaki nerwów obwodowych, mięsaki prążkowanokomórkowe, guz pheochromocytoma, rakowiaka dwunastnicy, białaczkę nielimfocytarną. Do innych objawów nerwiakowłókniakowatości typu 1. zaliczamy dysplazje i deformacje kostne, makrocefalię, niski wzrost, opóźnienie umysłowe, zaburzenia orientacji wzrokowo-przestrzennej, gorszą pamięć, dysleksję oraz padaczkę. W pracy przedstawiono przypadek 19-letniego chorego z rozpoznaną nerwiakowłókniakowatością typu 1. ze współistniejącym glejakiem skrzyżowania nerwów wzrokowych oraz padaczką lekooporną.
