Opis:
This article is an attempt at recreating the portrait of a “Chernobyl Man” created by Svetlana Alexievich in Chernobyl Prayer. The “Chernobyl Man” is a certain psychological type whose psychological portrait is drawn based on their entanglement in the current social and political realities. On the one hand, the “Chernobyl Man” is a typical representative of a homo sovieticus – an individual displaying boundless devotion to the state. On the other hand, this type of man through their relationship with the world is living proof of the spiritual disintegration of the Soviet empire.

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was the worst industrial accident of the last century that involved radiation. The unprecedented release of multiple different radioisotopes led to radioactive contamination of large areas surrounding the accident site. The exposure of the residents of these areas was varied and therefore the consequences for health and radioecology could not be reliably estimated quickly. Years since the Chernobyl accident, an enormous amount of work has been done to assess the consequences to the natural and human environment. Although it is difficult to summarize such a large and varied field, some general conclusions can be drawn. This paper includes the main findings concerning environmental issues and its impact on ecological policy of Ukraine and its impact on economy of the country. The biggest known technological catastrophe was a direct cause of major socio-economic and medical changes.

Opis:
The Chernobyl accident significantly complicated the ecological situation in Ukraine. The existing environmental pollution, which was already rooted in the background, ensures for the most part that the Ukrainian population comes into contact with one of the most powerful universal mutagens - ionizing radiation. This can cause genetic damage in all living beings, including human. As such, it is essential that the Chernobyl accident victims be medically monitored using cytogenetic monitoring – the study of the frequency and spectrum of chromosome aberrations in human peripheral blood lymphocytes with the help of classical (conventional cytogenetics, G-banding analysis) and new (FISHWCP) research methods.

Opis:
Both theoretical models and pharmacological dissection suggest that Cs+ influx to arabidopsis root cells occurs through voltage-insensitive cation channels (VICCs), encoded by members of the AtCNGC and AtGLR gene families, and 'high-affinity' K+/H+ symporters (KUPs), encoded by members of the AtKUP/AtHAK gene family. When arabidopsis have sufficient K, it is observed that VICCs mediate most Cs+ influx to root cells. However, KUPs contribute more to Cs+ influx in roots of K-starved plants. This phenomenon has been attributed to an increased expression of AtHAK5 in roots of K-starved plants. Curiously, although arabidopsis mutants lacking some AtCNGCs show reduced Cs accumulation, mutants lacking other AtCNGCs accumulate more Cs in their shoot than wildtype plants. It is hypothesised, therefore, that the expression of genes encoding diverse K+-transporters might be altered to compensate for the absence of AtCNGCs that contribute significantly to cellular K homeostasis. Increased Cs+ influx and accumulation could then be explained if the lack of an AtCNGC caused a physiological K-deficiency that increased the expression of AtKUPs. Such observations imply that the consequences of a simple genetic manipulation, such as the mis-expression of a AtCNGC gene, on Cs+ influx and accumulation might not be predicted a priori. Finally, since AtCGNCs, AtGLRs and AtKUPs have contrasting Cs+:K+ selectivities, and their relative expression is determined by diverse environmental variables, both the Cs:K ratio in plant tissues and the absolute rates of Cs+ influx and accumulation will depend critically on environmental conditions. This will impact on strategies for phytoremediation and/or the development of 'safer' crops for radiocaesium-contaminated land.

Air samples were collected at an early-warning sampling and monitoring radioactive contamination station ASS-500. The results of the measurements are presented for radioactive aerosols collected on filters each week between 1992 and 1999. The large variations in activity concentration were observed in annual cycles. The maximum values exceeded the mean annual values by a factor of 2.8 to 7.3. Over the period of eight years the mean values of activity in air was found to decrease from 5.3 mi Bq m-3 in 1992 to 2.2 mi Bq m-3 in 1999. A good correlation between the Cs-137 activity and dust content in the air indicates that in the observed period the main source of Cs-137 activity is the dust with soil and vegetation particles. The effect of radiation from inhalation is negligible (626 pSv).

This article concerns the semantics of wormwood in the context of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The study considers non-fictional narratives about this catastrophe from an ethnolinguistic and ethnobotanical perspective. The situational semantics of wormwood draws on the symbolism of this plant established in East Slavic folk culture and in the biblical tradition. In non-fictional narratives, however, this meaning is transformed (e.g. by limiting the semantic field) and interpreted in the context of apocalyptic prophecy.

Opis:
The clean-up operations following the Chernobyl accident were arguably the greatest in the history of mankind. This paper is not intended to give a comprehensive review of the Chernobyl related research, we present only a review of the scientific literature available till now about the “liquidators”, i.e. people who performed the task of decontamination work near the damaged Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Most of the approximately 300,000 liquidators who took part in the mitigation of the local consequences of the Chernobyl accident between 1986 and 1989 received only low radiation doses which are comparable or lower than those documented in nuclear worker registries. The health consequences from these radiation doses are too small to be identifiable in any epidemiological study that does not target specific sub-groups with potentially higher exposure. From our review of the published literature, several criteria are derived which could be used to identify potentially suitable sub-populations; in particular, among those being the liquidators who participated in the clean-up work during in 1986, including CNPP staff, special groups such as the “sarcophagus workers” (39), helicopter crews (3, 48), liquidators from the Institute of Biophysics who had participated in clean-up work in Chernobyl (12, 20), the Samoilenko group (12), sarcophagus builders (12) and groups other that the aforementioned.

In this document, the authors present the results of the long-term monitoring of the condition of the eyes of victims of the Chernobyl catastrophe. The patient examinations were conducted using our system of standard inspection and description of the condition of the eye. We have summarized the development of this system in another paper. Ocular effects in patients as a result of the Chernobyl accident have been classified either as specific irradiation injuries, attributable only to radiation exposure, or ophthalmopathology that is observed under normal conditions, but for which radiation exposure is an important risk factor. This division is particularly apparent when examining the clean-up workers in Chernobyl.

Opis:
The starting point for the interpretation of the poem Płyn Lugola, [Lugol’s solution] written by B. Zadura, is the rift between the classical form of the sonnet and the title that prompts the interventionist character of the poem and that indicates journalistic involvement in and the implications of the events in Chernobyl. This in turn leads to identification of further structural tensions and dissonances (in the verse course, at the level of imaging and in shaping the mood of the poem). The descriptive category for the essence of the composition and underlined overtones of the work is the sublime, in particular as it is viewed by modern aesthetics (proposed by Lyotard, Derrida, but also Burke). What surfaces is the microscale of imaging clashed with the macroscale phenomena formalized in lyrical situation, violation of the substance of the world, stability encroached by liquidity. A particularly validated layer of the work is the sound structure of the poem: in the finely and precisely controlled instrumental line, almost equivalent to the anagram, connotes the word “Chernobyl”, though the word is not expressed explicitly in the text. The interpretation intends to prove that the stake here is the articulation of sublimity charged and permeated with a metapoetic reflection – and that “the most important is, at the same time, the most difficult to describe”.

This article attempts to analyse and interpret the ever-growing popularity of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone among tourists, focusing on photographs taken by people visiting the Zone. The author draws conclusions based on her exploratory field research conducted in March 2019. She studies the statements and photographic practices of the trip participants, using them as a starting point for proposing her own theses. The stories of Chernobyl become the basis for reading the myth of a nuclear disaster, while photographs are a representation of tourist’s ideas of it. The key to their interpretation is to apply the theory of mythology developed by Roland Barthes and Claude Levi-Strauss to see the links between eternal oppositions, such as life-death, ordinary-unusual, nature-culture, disaster-everyday life. The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone becomes the stage on which the mythical tale of ‘the world turned upside down’ and ‘the city without people’ is told.

The aim of this work is to assess the current deposits of Cs-137 in soil and in lakes in the Poland's north-eastern lake district (12-14 years after Chernobyl accident) a dozen or so years after the Chernobyl disaster. Caesium content in soil and sediment was determined by gamma spectrometry (in 79 soil samples and 136 sediment samples). The soil samples were collected in summer 1998-2000. The sediment from 29 lakes were sampled in May 2000. The highest surface activity was found in soil with the arithmetic mean (AM) 3.13 kBq m-2 and median (M) 2.37 kBq m-2. For lakes, the respective values were 1.89 kBq m-2 and 1.5 kBq m-2. In the case of the soil samples collected from forests, fields, lake shores and arable lands, the mean values of caesium deposition were: 4.37, 2.56, 3.42 and 1.52 kBq m-2, respectively. The mean surface activity of sedimentary samples (AM) from oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophics lakes was found to have different values, viz. 1.48, 2.23 and 1.86 kBq m-2, respectively.

Among all known disasters, cataclysms and catastrophes, the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant holds a particular place in human memory. There are several reasons for that. Firstly, as one of the largest industrial disasters in history, it was an incident of truly global reach that put citizens of many countries at risk. Secondly, people were suddenly forced to confront with an invisible enemy, one that raises the greatest fear, which made that fight extremely uneven. Thirdly, the explosion occurred at a specific moment in history and in a specific country, as a result of which relevant information, limited as it was, was released to the public with a significant delay, with some events of 26 April 1986 not fully explained until today. These are probably only a few reasons why this catastrophe continues to stir emotions even after 30 years. The aim of the discussion presented here is to find the source of the current increase in interest in Chernobyl, analyse media discourse associated with disasters and predict their possible effects.

The aim of this article is to present the phenomenon of stalkerism (a kind of illegal tourism) in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The article investigates the specificity of the stalker experience through the concept of transgression (Kozielecki 2007). The article broadens the perspective on the tourism experience by using a psychological concept that has not so far been widely used in tourism studies, even though it refers to classic ideas (liminality, rites of passage, transformation). The genesis and specificity of the phenomenon of stalkerism in the context of the development of organized tourism in the Zone are presented. Then the transgressions of stalkers during exploration of the Zone are described. Lastly, the article shows how stalkerism contributes to the transformation of tourism and the development of the Zone’s heritage.
