Opis:
The object of this study was to examine the nature of natural organic matter (NOM) removed on each stage of water treatment train used in the “Mokry Dwór” Wrocław Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and to compare obtained results with water treatment efficiencies achieved with the use of membrane ultrafiltration, ion-exchange and UF/ion-exchange integrated processes. In the experiments fractional analysis with the use of polymeric resins (DAX-8, XAD-4 and IRA-958) was used. Obtained results have shown that most (56%) of the raw water NOM was found in fraction characterized by presence of humic and fulvic acids (VHA and SHA fractions). VHA fraction made the most of DOC removed in examined water treatment train and coagulation was mainly responsible for this effect. Integrated process consisting of MIEX®DOC ion exchange and PES 10 kDa ultrafiltration turned out to be very effective at high molecular weight hydrophobic compounds removal from water being much less efficient with hydrophilic compounds.

Opis:
PACls overdosage has negative impact on the operation and the effectiveness of coagulation and separation of post-coagulation suspensions. The results of the pilot study revealed that a sharp increase of fine particles was observed at reaching and exceeding the isoelectric point. Based on the full-scale research with PACl_1 (B = 2, 4) it was stated that these particles did not cause deterioration of standard quality parameters (turbidity, absorbance UV254, colour, TOC, CODMn) of water purified in conventional treatment. However, the particles not retained in sedimentation tanks supplied rapid filters and caused their overloading, and hence shortening of filtration cycles.

Wastewater treatment is becoming ever more critical due to diminishing water resources, increasing wastewater disposal costs, and stricter discharge regulations that have lowered permissible contaminant levels in waste streams. The ultimate goal of wastewater management is the protection of the environment in a manner commensurate with public health and socio-economic concerns. The aim of our study is to use natural occurring plant (Pistia stratiotes) to reduce the chemical oxygen demand and color from the industrial waste water. It was found that 120 mg/l of Chemical oxygen demand and 85 mg/l of color reduction was observed with Pistia stratiotes.

This research characterizes a natural zeolitic-rich tuff from Yemen (Al-Ahyuq area) and its potential in environmental applications. A total of 40 zeolite samples of Al-Ahyuq area were selected and fully characterized by a variety technique to obtain the mineralogical and physicochemical parameters. Our results show that the purities of zeolite minerals range from 78 to ~100% zeolite. Clinoptilolite and mordenite are the major mineral zeolite whereas heulandite and stilbite occur in minor amounts present in the zeolite deposit. Accessory minerals include quartz, illite, mica, feldspar, kaolinite, and smectite. In addition, the chemical compositions of Al-Ahyuq zeolitic tuffs are found to be comparable with other zeolites compositions of high economic value in the world. Moreover, its environment application was also discussed in this paper.

Opis:
Our scientific research is based on oxidation reactions and monitoring of chemical reaction kinetics in the Velekinca groundwaters plant in Gjilan municipality, Kosovo. The GW of this plant contains high concentration of manganese so we need to use potassium permanganate (KMnO4) as one of the most power oxidants in the water treatment plant. In our research the high concentration of Mn in groundwaters is 0.22–0.28 mg∙dm–3 and this concentration is not in accordance with the WHO. Chlorine is one of the most common disinfectants used in the water treatment industry because it has a low cost and immediate effect on the destruction of microorganisms, the concentration of chlorine (Cl2) in our research is 0.1–0.32 mg∙dm–3. The speed of chemical reactions in the technology of GW is extremely important because sometimes in the elimination of chemical pollutants using oxidizing agents often form intermediate species. The speed of reactions indicates how fast chemical bonds are formed in the creation of a product, and this depends on the rate of reaction (XA). The focus for the research is to study the potassium permanganate and chlorine gas reactions in water if it forms intermediate products (intermediate species) due to the high speed of reactions. Scientific research conclusion, intermediate species in the oxidation reactions of Mn and water disinfection with Cl2(g) it is impossible to cause a high rate of chemical reactions from the reaction rate (XA = 1%) to the reaction rate (XA = 99%). The maximum speed at the highest XA Cl2 is from 4.405∙10–11 to 8.87∙10–10 mol∙dm–3∙s–1, while at Mn is (2.030–4.034)∙10–7 mol∙dm–3∙s–1.

Opis:
The work presented the assessment of household wastewater treatment plants with drainage systems on the quality of groundwater in dug wells and deep water wells in the area of 3 selected communes (Drelów, Dębowa Kłoda and Urszulin), located in the Lublin province in south-eastern Poland. The investigations of the physicochemical composition of water from selected 28 dug wells and 2 deep water wells were conducted from June to July 2020, involving 9 measurement series. The microbiological studies consisted in 4 measurement series. The composition of the wastewater from primary settling tanks discharged to soil via drainage systems located in the vicinity of considered wells was also examined on a single occasion. The studies indicate that the water from wells are significantly polluted with ammonia, nitrites, as well as compounds of natural origin: iron and manganese. The presence of microbiological pollution of fecal origin was noted. The studies clearly indicate the possible pollution of the analyzed well waters with domestic sewage discharged to soil via drainage systems. Therefore, it necessary to take the actions aimed at improving the quality of groundwater in the Lublin province, including limitation of drainage systems, especially in the areas with unfavorable subsurface and hydrological conditions as well as low water supply coverage. The need to introduce changes in legal regulations and strategies for the development of technical infrastructure in counties, favoring the most efficient, as well as simple and inexpensive technologies, was indicated.

Opis:
Miedwie Lake is the biggest post-glacial lake of the West-Pomeranian Voievodship. At the same time it is the fifth of the largest lakes in Poland. As regards the geographical situation, Miedwie Lake is situated centrally between three big agglomerations i.e. Szczecin, Stargard Szczecinski and Pyrzyce (Fig. 1). The lake lies on the territory of three municipalities: Pyrzyce and Warnice in the District of Pyrzyce as well as Stargard Szczecinski in the District of Stargard (Rozmiarek 1983, Szyper 1990). At the moment, the reservoir is characterised with the regular, prolonged shape resembling an ellipse. Banks are shallow, regular and sometime very wet. The lake has the belt of the nearshore reaching locally tens metres far from the lake bank, what is the reason, together with the fact that the wind blows always here, that it is convenient for practising the various kinds of water sports. The lake area amounts to 3 527 ha; maximal depth – 43.8 m; average depth – 19.3 m; water capacity – 681.7 mln m3; shore-line length – 38.8 km; water level datum 14.1 m above sea level; maximal width 3.16 km; maximal length 16.2 km. The lake’s bottom is the lowest situated area on the territory of Poland.

The study assesses the performance of experimental wetland pond systems vegetated by Lemna minor L. (common duckweed or lesser duckweed) for textile azo dye removal. The objectives are to assess the influence of L. minor on water quality parameters, compare the dye and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of four dyes (Acid Blue 113, Reactive Blue 198, Direct Orange 46 and Basic Red 46) with each other, and monitor the effect of dye accumulation as a function of the relative growth rate (RGR) of L. minor. Findings indicate that the simulated shallow pond systems remove BR46 (low concentration) significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other dyes, and the ponds containing L. minor outperformed control ponds by around 51% in mean removal efficiency with a potential of L. minor for phytoremediation of approximately 13% efficiency.

Opis:
Certain contaminants are termed as emerging (Contaminants of Emerging Concern, CEC) since all aspects of these pollutants are not known and their regulation is not ununiform across the nations. The CECs include many classes of compounds that are used in various industries, plant protection chemicals, personal care products and medicines. They accumulate in waterbodies, soils, organisms including humans. They cause deleterious effects on plant animal and human health. Therefore, alternative greener synthesis of these chemicals, sustainable economic methods of waste disposal, scaling up and circular methods using sludge for removing the contaminants are innovative methods that are pursued. There are several improvements in chemical waste treatments using electro-oxidation coupled with solar energy, high performing recycled granular activated charcoal derived from biomass are few advances in the field. Similarly, use of enzymes from microbes for waste removals is a widely used technique for bioremediation. The organisms are genetically engineered to remove hazardous chemicals, dyes, and metals. Novel technologies for mining economically the precious and rare earth elements from e-waste can improve circular economy. However, there is additional need for participation of various nations in working towards greener Earth. There should be pollution awareness in local communities that can work along with Government legislations.
