Opis:
The article addresses the hitherto unknown notaries of Chełmno in the context of the development of the city’s chancery from the 14th to the 16th centuries. On the basis of the thorough analysis of the sources – the city’s books (The judicial book of the city of Chełmno of the years 1330–1430, books of town councilors, accounting books) documents (recorded in the books and included in diplomatic codices) twelve notaries appearing in the sources as early as the first half of the 14th century have been identified. The author concentrated on the hitherto unknown notaries such as Nicolaus Konin (1328), Iohannes (1333) or ; eodricus (1360–1370). The best known head of the city’s chancery in Chełmno is Konrad Bitschin (he held the o¢ ce of the notary in the years 1430–1438) described by both German and Polish historians. The article shows the notary’s contribution in the organization and reform of the chancery indicating at the same time his achievements in other fields. The range of the notary’s work in the chancery is described by the extracts of the manuscript by Konrad Bitschin cited by the German historian Franz Schultz - „Manuale notarii civitatis Culmen”, where the city’s books established by him were recorded. The comparison of the condition of the city’s archive before Konrad Bitschin’s term of office with the list of new volumes gives us a picture of intensive works, the aim of which was to order the archive and to make the work of the Chełmno chancery more effective. Indicating the successors of Konrad Bitschin – Jacob Schoensee or Andreas Zommer – the author underlined the change in the way of running the chancery and much worse aptitude of the subsequent notaries, which was reflected in a much less accurate manner to keep the books. Apart from the description of the individual heads of the city’s chancery, the article addresses the nature of the work of the chancery, the most important duties of notaries, their remuneration and education.

Opis:
The article addresses the problem of dating the foundation privilege for Chełmno and Toruń. The author presents the discussion which has been held so far in reference to the problem; he also attempts to estimate the value of the arguments used in the debate. The author devotes a great deal of space to the analysis of the argumentation of the German researcher Marc Löwener, who made an attempt to revise the well-established opinion that the foundation privilege for Chełmno and Toruń had been issued on 31 December 1233. According to the author, the attempt did not bring convincing arguments for dating the Chełmno foundation privilege in 1232; still, the author considered this option to be adequate. The author maintains that the evidence for the aforementioned dating of the document is the content of the document issued by the Magdeburg burgrave Burchard von Querfurt in Schraplau in 1233. In the same way, the author interpreted the results of his research on the various styles of commencing a new year in the Monastic State. According to the findings, the Teutonic knights in the 13th century used the a nativitate style. Another argument supporting the opinion that the Chełmno foundation privilege was issued in 1232 is the fact that in the Chełmno document the title “Lodewicus in Quidin provisor” was used with reference to the governor of Kwidzyn, while in 1233 the title should have taken the form of “provisor Insule Sancte Marie”.

The article is a contribution to the development of the full socio‑topography of medieval Chełmno (Kulm) and shows the problems related to the development of the social and occupational structure of this city in the light of surviving city records. It indicates gaps in the sources database, and, at the same time, the possibilities and research methods of socio‑topography via the example of Chełmno. Opis:
In the years 2016–2018, as part of the research project “Castra terrae culmensis – na rubieży chrześcijańskiego świata”, five castles at the Chełmno land were studied. They supplemented the existing knowledge concerning construction techniques. Castles in Starogród and Bierzgłowo represent the oldest period of brick construction in Prussia. They constituted a continuation of wood and earth fortifications. When building the walls, the older embankments were completely removed (Starogród) or lowered (Bierzgłowo). The curtains were set in narrow ditches, at different levels. The castle in Lipienek represents a type of castle, which was built around 1280. However, it was located in the place of a gord, which deviates from the rule when it comes to this type of castles. However, here the builders took advantage of designing methods, construction staging, and large embankment works typical for such type of castles. However, the presence of a rampart forced a modification of the standard technique. It was necessary to partially level it in order to be able to build the basement walls individually. The presence of earthworks – embankments, was also found in the fore court II in Papowo Biskupie. They were also characteristic for irregular castle zwingers erected during this period (Starogród, Bierzgłowo). Whereas, in Unisław it is possible to trace the technique of building an arcade foundation.
