Friendships with the most various kinds of people played an important role in the life of Saint John Paul II. In his reflections on friendship, the pope elaborates Thomistic categories from his personalist perspective. According to Pope Wojtyła, friendship is a specific form of chaste love. Among the friends, it works out a deep union that is an image of the triune God and an anticipation of the everlasting communion of the saints.

Man is someone real and as such he is immersed in a world that is a task set to him as a person. Therefore, the whole world, as entirely coming from God, and entirely assigned to Him, is constantly bursting with its natural truth and good and, consequently, also beauty. This is an important perspective, both in the order of nature and in the order of grace, also because the synthesis and fulfilment of all values (perfections), which is personal fullness – holiness, is the ultimate reference of the human person to the Person of God. However, this perspective becomes comprehensible only in the field of the realism of the human person’s truth, goodness and beauty, related to their perfect Source, and therefore to the Truth, Goodness and Beauty of the Person of God Himself.In this sense, it can be said that God is the End of all perfections. Holiness itself is thus a specific peak of the elevation of human potentialities to a higher level of being. „Holiness, through the elevation of truth, goodness and beauty to the supernatural level, can fulfil the potential of human nature – reason and will, to their limits; and this fulfilment, in Christian thought, can only take place in visio beatifica, to which this life here and now is supposed to prepare us”. Let us add that the understanding and implementation of evangelical counsels: chastity, poverty and obedience, serve this growth in a particular way. The counsels are the evangelical factor stimulating and strengthening the work of the intellect and free will.

Marital and parental love, as significant values both for particular individuals and for the whole society, require special protection. It is ensured by moral norms, and especially by: premarital chastity, marital fidelity, indissolubility of marriage, and parental responsibility connected with opposition to abortion and contraception. In numerous studies devoted to the attitudes towards marital-familial morality it turns out, however, that a considerable part of the respondents do not accept these norms. This is significant information for pastoral theologians, educationalists, family life counselors and pastors, because the efficiency of the efforts they make requires a diagnosis of the reality they encounter. And the diagnosis, as appears from the empirical research, should incline one not only to make careful educational, but also prophylactic, preventive and re-educational efforts.

This article focuses on conjugal abstinence in the teaching of the great Polish theologian, Benedict Hesse, who lived and worked in Cracow during the fifteenth century. In his work Commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew, Hesse focuses his discussion on chastity and conjugal abstinence in the context of several other subjects, including: the superiority of virginity over marriage; the superiority of virginal chastity over conjugal abstinence; the issue of assessing the pleasure of conjugal sexual intercourse; matters pertaining to modesty of the spouses and their exterior appearance; as well as castration for the Kingdom of Heaven. The issues that Hesse raises in relation to chastity and conjugal abstinence might bring a smile to a contemporary reader’s face, since they seem mostly anecdotal and basic. This article is not a complete and systematic lecture on conjugal abstinence.

The article is a reflection on the priesthood and the celibate related with it. The celibate is a topic that causes the discussion over the scandal of pedophilia in the Church, and although there is stressed in the media that no such sexual abuse should be combined with the requirement of the celibacy, these events indirectly provoked a discussion on the meaning of the celibacy and the need for the celibacy in the contemporary reality. There are some who maintains that because of the new look at celibacy is needed. The others ask questions about the origins and the original understanding of the celibacy. Did the medieval canonists and thinkers understand the celibacy in the same way as nowadays? What does the celibacy of a deacon and the priest mean today? What about the married priests of other religious communities, who are asking for the inclusion in the Latin Church? What is the procedure for receiving the dispensation from the celibacy? Is the celibacy with the tomorrow’s Church? Such questions and their answers constitute the main contents of the study.

W artykule omówiono czystość jako wartość rozpatrywaną w ujęciu psychospołecznym i kulturowym. Przypomniano podstawowe definicje wartości, główne poglądy na ten temat, a także ich znaczenie dla nauk, takich jak filozofia, psychologia, socjologia oraz pedagogika. Przedstawiono też główne aspekty judeochrześcijańskiego postrzegania czystości, które dotyczą różnych stanów czystości: młodzieńczo-dziewiczej, narzeczeńskiej i małżeńskiej, a także celibatu (życie kapłańskie i zakonne). Przytoczono poglądy biblijne wyrażone w tekstach Starego i Nowego Testamentu. Zwrócono uwagę na zagrożenia dla czystości w dzisiejszym społeczeństwie, a także na negatywne konsekwencje odrzucenia wartości czystości – duchowe, psychiczne, zdrowotne itp. Wyszczególniono też szereg pozytywnych skutków – zarówno indywidualnych, jak i społecznych zachowania cnoty czystości. Po uwzględnieniu danych statystycznych dostępnych w literaturze przedmiotu wyciągnięto wniosek o konieczności powrotu do traktowania czystości jako wartości, propagowania jej w mediach oraz kształtowania odpowiednich postaw w procesie wychowawczym.
In the paper, the chastity is presented as a value in terms of psycho-sociological and cultural life. The basic definition of the value and the mainstream views on this topic were recalled, as well as their impact on the sciences like philosophy, psychology, pedagogics etc. The main aspects of the Judeo-Christian view on chastity value were described pointing out the different states of chastity: youth, premarital, spouse and celibacy (priests and monks). The biblical perspective was shown, using the passages from both Old and New Testaments as well. Today’s societies turning away from chastity produces a range of factors threating the chastity, despite the numerous negative consequences of unchastity and unmoral behavior. Those consequents on spiritual life, psychical state and health were pointed out, too. Moreover, the positive impact of chastity on individuals and societies was emphasized. Considering the statistical data available in the publications, the main conclusion was that it is inevitable to restore the value of the chastity, to propagate it in media and to include it into the parenting and educational processes.

Kategoria „czystości” w sensie moralnym, a szczególnie w obszarze ludzkiej seksualności jest dziś postrzegana ambiwalentnie. Z jednej strony stale ma swoją wartość antropologiczno-etyczną, z drugiej jednak strony jest coraz mniej rozumiana, a nawet oskarżana o nieaktualność i nienaukowość. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę wykazania, że to co dotychczas kryło się pod pojęciem „czystości seksualnej”, można – pod pewnymi warunkami – zastąpić kategorią „ekologii ludzkiej”. Mostem łączącym „czystość seksualną” z „ekologią ludzką” może być (tego starają się dowieść niniejsze analizy) pojęcie „integracji seksualnej”. Prowadzone tu rozważania wykazują adekwatność terminu „ekologii ludzkiej” w obszarze argumentacji etycznej, dotyczącej ludzkiej płciowości. Jednak termin ten zachowa swoją głębię (i nie będzie oskarżony o powierzchowność) tylko wówczas, gdy będzie zawierał wymiar teologiczny, nie tylko protologiczny, ale także chrystologiczny oraz eschatologiczny.

Issues related to the eroticism frequently appear in the media and this is the context in which the authors of the following text concentrated on a closely related and yet opposing matter. They decided to ask about the broadly defined chastity and the purity of heart, mind and body (the terms chastity and purity, as well as unchastity and impurity, shall be used interchangeably). How is this topic presented by the contemporary media? Simultaneously, they ask how the issues related to the lack of such purity, e.g. in the physical context, are treated by the media. The authors made an attempt to explain this by presenting a comparative analysis of two films they chose as serving best for their purpose. The first is50 Shades of Grey, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, and the other Caroline, directed by Dariusz Regucki. During the first stage of this research of notions and chastity and unchas-tity have been defined, on the basis of the proper reference books. Next, the chosen movies were analysed thoroughly, in order to define the true look of the purity and impurity noticeable in both movies – in their activities, as well as in the behaviour and dialogues of the main protagonists. The third stage of the research assumed creating a synthesis of the material achieved on the basis of analysing the two pictures. At this moment it became possible to present the conclusions, pointing out, first of all, that the media are rather poorly interested in the subject of chastity. However, this inspired the authors to drawing other conclusions in the form of the postulates, concerning how the media presents the subjects of purity and impurity.

The article is divided into two paragraphs. The first paragraph presents St. Augustine’s opinion on the husband as a person. His remarks on the appearance as well as the personal values of a man and husband are discussed.The second paragraph deals with the issue of personality formation, including such points as the care to form moral goodness, especially the virtues of chastity and continence. This paragraph also considers St. Augustine’s view on concupiscence. The bishop of Hippo not only assesses concupiscence but also gives encouragement to overcome it and at the same time suggests methods that enable its control.Keywords

The love, sexuality and the punishment in the Macedonian traditional culture is considered on the basic of the ethnological-anthropological analyze. The analyze is based on the oral stories, ritual practices and oral poetry, which I take as means of communication. The love and the love emotions were in accordance with social and cultural criteria of the community in which occurred. This means that the love emotions, primarily the sexual emotions, had to be controlled, or to be shown as much as the traditional culture allowed. In general this was meant for the women and the maidens, „a woman’s chastity”, that implies the women’s purity and innocence. Otherwise the punishment commences. The betrayed young woman that has totally surrendered to the love emotions or the unjustly accused wife of infidelity is reaching towards the curse in order to satisfy the justice.

Human sexuality is a value of exceptional importance both for particular individuals and society as a whole. Therefore it calls for protection. This protection consists of moral norms that the Catholic Church has clearly and unambiguously exposed in her documents. The mass media, however, advocate permissivism and moral liberalism, materialism, hedonism, and consumerism. They may confuse their recipients with regard to valid norms of sexual behaviour. Approving that man will not be truly happy if he rejects the laws written in his nature by God (HV 31), and assuming responsibility for one's own development and formation of the young generation, we should state that it is extremely needed to remind people of teaching in the sphere of sexual morality. It contains especially hints on premarital chastity, marital faithfulness, and indissolubility of marriage.

Józefa, swoim życiem jeszcze bardziej kieruje naszą uwagę na wartości, które leżą u podstaw relacji małżeńskich: wyłączność, zaufanie do współmałżonka, szacunek i czystość. Czystość małżeńska, której nie można mylić z dziewiczością, jest pożądaną postawą przez małżonków, gdyż jest umocnieniem prawdziwej miłości. Pisali już o tym ojcowie Kościoła, a szczególnie św. Jan Chryzostom. Odwaga Maryi w realizacji swego powołania małżeńskiego może pobudzić odwagę małżeństw w zachowywaniu przysięgi małżeńskiej.
Mary is not only the Mother of Jesus, but also St Joseph’s wife, and so she may inspire the contemporary marriages. Being both a virgin and Joseph’s spouse she directs our attention to the values which form the basis of marital relationships: exclusivity, confidence, mutual respect and chastity. Marital chastity, which is not to be confused with virginity, is the desired behaviour in every marriage, as it is the consolidation of true love. It was already the subject of investigation for the Church Fathers, in particular for St John Chrysostom. Mary’s courage in the realization of her marital vocation may encourage and strengthen marriages to keep their marriage vows.

W referacie przedstawiono krótką charakterystykę uczestników katechez oraz omówiono treści prezentowane na spotkaniach realizowanych w archidiecezji poznańskiej. Wobec rosnących wskaźników rozpadu związków małżeńskich wskazano na szczególne znaczenie rozumienia sakramentalności małżeństwa. Na podstawie wieloletnich doświadczeń uzasadniono celowość podejmowania w ramach katechez problematyki sakramentalności małżeństwa jako jednego z najważniejszych zagadnień. W ramach pracy dyplomowej wykonanej na Podyplomowym Studium Rodziny UAM dokonano oceny prowadzonych katechez w kilku parafiach Poznania, potwierdzając w ogólności pozytywny odbiór ich treści oraz formy. Przytoczono część wyników badań ankietowych dotyczących sakramentu małżeństwa i wykazano pozytywne zmiany postaw w odniesieniu do istoty sakramentalnego związku małżeńskiego. W końcowej części referatu sformułowano ogólne wnioski.
Premarital catechizing recommended in the Directory for the Pastoral Care of the Family is one of the forms of the engaged couple's preparation to the sacrament of matrimony. It includes typically 10 to 12 catechizing meetings, which apply to the most important issues of Catholic marriage and the family. The present paper provides a short characterization of the participants and the content presented during the meetings held in the Archdiocese of Poznań. An increasing rate of marriage breakdowns shows the great importance of understanding the sacramentality of marriage. On the basis of long-term experience it is purposeful to include the issue of matrimonial sacramentality within the scope of catechizing meetings as one of the most important problems. Within the framework of the present study written at AMU Postgraduate Family Studies evaluation of catechizing in several parishes in Poznan has been done, which confirmed the generally positive perception of its form and content. A part of the questionnaire results related to the sacrament of marriage have been adduced and some positive changes in the attitudes towards the essence of matrimony have been proved. In the final part of the paper some general conclusions have been formulated.
