    Opis:
    Horrors of the First World War affected the life of all citizens of Lodz, especially the young ones. Victualing-related problems led to a phenomenon of hunger and numerous strictly connected diseases. Various charity organizations tried to help children from Lodz, for example by organizing countryside excursions for them. The children took part both in a few-week summer stays, as well as in a few-month visits to the countryside. One of the main aims set by the organizers was to improve the overall well-being of children by providing them with proper nutrition. Even though the children staying in the countryside were required to work and help farmers, some positive influence of the aforementioned stays was frequently indicated.

    Po 1 września 1939 r. i napaści niemieckiej na Polskę, na Wileńszczyznę, a szczególnie do Wilna napłynęła kilkudziesięciotysięczna fala uchodźców, głównie Polaków, ale również obywateli polskich narodowości żydowskiej i białoruskiej oraz nielicznych Litwinów. Od początku, dzięki licznym oddolnym inicjatywom mieszkańców Wilna, organizowano dla nich pomoc, którą niosło również państwo litewskie i Litewski Czerwony Krzyż. Ich działalność wspierały finansowo i materialnie organizacje międzynarodowe. Tylko w Wilnie powołano co najmniej 10 społecznych organizacji pomocowych, które z różnym powodzeniem funkcjonowały do oficjalnej likwidacji w grudniu 1940 r. przez władze Litewskiej Socjalistycznej Republiki Radzieckiej.
    After September 1, 1939 and the German invasion of Poland, the Vilnius Region, and especially Vilnius, a wave of tens of thousands of refugees, mainly Poles, but also Polish citizens of Jewish and Belarusian nationality and a few Lithuanians, arrived. From the very beginning, thanks to the numerous grassroots initiatives of the inhabitants of Vilnius, help was organized for them, which was also provided by the Lithuanian state and the Lithuanian Red Cross. Their activities were supported financially and materially by international organizations. Only in Vilnius, at least 10 social aid organizations were established, which functioned with varying degrees of success until the official liquidation in December 1940 by the authorities of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic

    Sponsorship in this paper is the formal relationship between an authorized Catholic organization and a recognized apostolic undertaking to promote and sustain Christ’s ministry to people in need. Sponsorship is not a static reality. Radical changes which have occurred in charitable works, largely due to the decline in religious vocations and the aging of members of institutes, led sponsoring leaders to seek for and find new approaches to sponsorship whereby their ministry could continue without compromising their identity. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to certain perspectives of the evolving understanding of sponsorship which is regularly in the process of being transformed and reshaped. It faces many challenges regarding the continuing Catholic identity of the sponsored works and the recognition of numerous new opportunities for future forms of sponsorship. This study explores certain canonical and practical perspectives for the development of the sponsorship of various forms of Catholic ministerial organizations, with particular reference to health care.

    Celem pracy jest ukazanie żydowskich towarzystw dobroczynnych w Królestwie Polskim; ich podstaw prawnych legalizacji przez administrację państwową, chronologii, geografii, stanowiska społecznego założycieli, przemian celów działalności i jej rezultatów, stosunku władz państwowych. Podstawę źródłową stanowią źródła archiwalne wytworzone przez gubernialną administrację państwową, która legalizowała i nadzorowała działalność organizacji. Prasa pomijała w większości żydowskie organizacje charytatywne, a zamieszczane o nich informacje są nieprecyzyjne. Niepełny stan zachowania zespołów archiwalnych wytworzonych przez urzędy gubernialne ogranicza przedstawienie problematyki. Przemiany społeczno-ekonomiczne wśród Żydów w Królestwie Polskim w drugiej połowie XIX w. doprowadziły do wzrostu liczby ubogich. Pierwsze żydowskie organizacje charytatywne, które miały charakter ogólny, administracja państwowa zaczęła legalizować w 1898 r. W latach 1902–1905 zaprzestano ich rejestracji. W okresie regulowania przez władze państwowe życia społecznego (1894–1906) zalegalizowano co najmniej 14 towarzystw. Ich założycielami byli bankierzy, fabrykanci i wielcy kupcy. W okresie liberalizacji życia społecznego (1906–1914) zarejestrowano co najmniej 102 organizacje samodzielne oraz 13 ich oddziałów. Miały one charakter głównie wyspecjalizowany. Wybuch rewolucji w 1905 r. zaktywizował społecznie: handlarzy, rzemieślników, urzędników prywatnych i osoby wykonujące wolne zawody, którzy zaczęli brać udział w tworzeniu organizacji charytatywnych. Tworzyły je także kobiety. Najwięcej żydowskich towarzystw dobroczynnych powstało w guberniach oraz wielkich miastach najbardziej zaawansowanych w przemianach.
    The aim of the work is to present Jewish charity societies in Polish Kingdom; their legal basis for legalization by the state administration, chronology, geography, social position of the founders, changes in the goals of activity and its results, the attitude of state authorities. The source basis are archival files created by the provincial state administration, which legalized and supervised the organization's activities. The press largely ignored Jewish charities organizations, and the information published about them was imprecise. The incomplete state of preservation of the archival collections created by the provincial offices limits the presentation of the issue. Socio-economic changes among Jews in Polish Kingdom in the second half of the 19th century led to an increase in the number of the poor. The first Jewish charitable organizations of a general nature were legalized by the state administration in 1898. In the years 1902–1905, their registration was discontinued. During the period when the state authorities regulated social life (1894–1906), at least 14 societies were legalized. Their founders were bankers, factory owners and great merchants. In the period of liberalization of social life (1906–1914), at least 102 independent organizations and 13 of their branches were registered. They specialized mainly in acting. The outbreak of the revolution in 1905 stimulated the social activation of: traders, craftsmen, private officials and freelancers who began to take part in creating charity organizations. Women also made them. The greatest number of Jewish charitable societies was established in the governorates and large cities that were most advanced in transformations.

    The article presents the publications in the periodical “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” and the literary almanac Podarok bednym in the light of the development of charity in Russia (motives, forms, results): 1. The publications of Alexander Sturdza (About social charity, About private charity), Pyotr Shalikov etc.; 2. The charity institutions in the capital and the provinces; 3. The charity initiatives of women and the Russian writers. “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” (the monthly magazine) was published in St. Petersburg from 1817 to 1826. It contained, among other elements, information and reports about the activity of philanthropists and charity institutions, and literary works (Hymn to love for a man by Pyotr Shalikov). Podarok bednym was published in Odessa in 1834 (the motto was a quotation from the Aeneid by Vergil: “Miseris succurrere disco”) by a women’s benevolent society. It contained the commentaries and works of belles-lettres. The paper compares “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” and Podarok bednym (the “common places”, for instance the articles by Alexander Strudza About social charity published in “Zhurnal Imperatorskogo chelovekolubivogo obshchestva” in 1817 and in Podarok bednym in 1834). It presents also the discussions about charity in the Russian periodicals in the first half of the 19th century.
