Opis:
The aim of this article is to investigate the links between vampire stories and plays and Lord Byron in the context of his early nineteenth-century reception in Europe, and particularly in Poland. Byron is often regarded as one of the main originators of vampire stories in modern European culture and occasionally even as a model for vampiric characters. This image of Byron was mainly constructed on the basis of a passage in The Giaour and John Polidori’s tale The Vampyre, which had first been erroneously attributed to Byron. Owing to Byron’s literary fame as the greatest living British poet as well as to his scandalous reputation, The Vampyre gained great popularity both in Britain and on the Continent, which resulted in numerous theatrical adaptations, especially in France and in Germany. In Poland the French melodrama Upiór (Le Vampire) by Charles Nodier, Pierre Carmouche and Achille de Jouffroy was a great stage success and was published in a book form. Polidori’s tale allegedly originated in Byron’s idea, the record of which appears in the fragment called “Augustus Darvell”. Echoing the techniques Byron used to suggest to his readers that he himself might be identified with the protagonists of his poetic tales, Polidori similarly invites the reader to identify his eponymous vampire Lord Ruthven with Lord Byron. In Byron’s fragment one can trace only a hint of vampirism; in Polidori’s story it becomes a metaphor not only of sexual profligacy but also of “byromania”, the cult of Byron among his female readers. In popular melodrama the vampire character is conflated with Don Giovanni from Mozart’s opera, possibly because of Byron’s publication of the first two cantos of Don Juan.

Opis:
The Alienist, a TV series released in 2018, is based on Caleb Carr’s best-sell-ing novel published in 1994. Irrespective of its genesis as an adaptation, presently the TV series generates new senses when watched from the perspective of works that have appeared in visual culture since the publication of the book. This paper sets to demonstrate to what extent the original novel and later the TV production create a mutation of a well-known pair of detectives (Sherlock/Watson) and how the reception of the series may differ from that of the original novel.

Opis:
Many researches that have been conducted in Poland and in the world over the period of 30 years show that the mass media received by the family in a rational manner may play a positive role in the development and education of the child, in providing knowledge on pedagogy, psychology, and medicine. They may inspire parents to a concrete educational work with their child and take part in the processes of family integration through a mutual reception of the contents provided by the media, thereby compensating any lack on the part of the family or local milieu. The mutual reception of the television programmes establishes appropriate conditions for the educational influence and supports the creation of ties that integrate the family. If the masse media are supposed to be used as one of many educational means, it is indispensable that parents control this process. The value of media's influence depends on the direction to which the potential opportunities of their influence and educational support are carried out. „And, consequently, one has to state - says A. Kumor - that television integrates the family. Obviously, this is to the extent to which this integration depends on the psychic ties among the members of the group who watch television programmes together.”

Being a result from the 2008/9 research into interpretation of Aboriginal literature within Polish readerships, the article explores ways in which Indigenous characters are imagined and understood by Polish readers. Also, given that literatures and their characters are usually looked throughout the readers’ schemata and memory scans, it shows the dominant ways in which the Polish readers interpret and communicate with some of those characters.

Opis:
In the article, a problem of translation of the old Serbian literary texts into Polish is discussed together with the basic mechanisms of the reception process of creativity revealed by the Orthodox Slavs from the Balkan region, that is, in other words, the works arisen in the circle of the Slaviae Orthodoxae and their presence in the Polish culture’s space which belonged to the circle of the Slaviae Latinae. The considerations regard the essence and function of translation, presence and absence of translated literature - its initial version in the target space, and their foundation is located in the collections of translations existing in the Polish reading circuit. The issue of the presence or position of the old South Slavonic literatures, namely, the old Serbian texts in their Polish translation, is featured in several possible perspectives. The problem is exposed in the aspect of these texts’ peripheral character and literary genetics. By dint of the first reference, a phenomenon of asymmetry in the realm of translated literatures is emphasized, which results from the domination of the so-called world literatures and the marginalization of the so-called small literatures along with the translated literary texts’ place - their initial (Old Church Slavonic) status from the view-point of the target (Polish) culture’s space, and their situation in this specific polysystem. The genetic studies’ path, however, is used in order to expose a form of the translated literature’s presence (old Serbian texts in their Polish translation), and to indicate the strategy of its introduction, namely, anthology as a supporting platform of the initial (source) literature in the space of the target culture together with its presentation, dialogical, and intercultural function derived from the authorized genre. In the article’s conclusion, the author accentuates the fact that the collections or individual publications of the old Serbian works, omitting various values of the particular projects and realizations, exist in the Polish reading circuit in order to reflect largely their presence status, knowledge, and need for those concrete South Slavonic literature.
