Opis:
The shape and size of present-day specimens of Chara baueri are described. C. baueri is believed to have practically died out in Europe. Oospores of specimens of C. baueri collected in Kazachstan were subjected to morpholgical analysis. Data recorded included oospore length, oospore diameter, the ratio of length to diameter, the number of lateral convolutions, ridge width, the width of the fossules at the equator, and the diameter of the basal pore. Variation in oospore length and the number of convolutions was higher than had been previously reported in the literature, whereas variation in oospore width was identical to previous reports.

Opis:
Morphological features of oospores of Chara baueri A. Braun, one of the rarest charophyte species worldwide, were studied based on 100 oospores collected from a small and temporarily dried mid-field pond near Cedynia, Western Poland. This is the first Polish and fifth presently known locality of this species. For comparison 67 oospores from a German population (similar pond localized near Batzlow, Germany) were also measured. So far, data on morphology of C. baueri oospores as well as the species ecology are limited. The only more detailed study of oospores for this species was earlier performed on 15 oospores from Kazakhstan. Largest polar axis (LPA, length), largest equatorial diameter (LED, width), isopolarity index (ISI = LPA/LED × 100), number of ridges, width of fossa, distance from apical pole to LED (AND) and anisipolarity index (ANI = AND/LPA × 100) were measured. The comparative analysis revealed that the oospores from Poland are generally bigger and more prolate than the German ones. The differences for most of studied parameters were statistically significant. The finding is discussed in the context of habitat differentiation of both studied sites. Moreover, the results obtained of oospore measurements for both populations differs from most of the data known so far from the literature.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań rozmieszczenia ramienic, prowadzonych w różnych regionach kraju w latach 2010–2012. Szczegółowo przedstawiono warunki siedliskowe 52 stanowisk, na których występowało 15 gatunków z rodzajów: Chara (12), Nitella (2) i Nitellopsis (1). W analizowanej grupie stanowisk najczęściej notowano Chara vulgaris, Ch. contraria, Ch. globularis i Ch. virgata. W trakcie badań odnaleziono liczne stanowiska gatunków zagrożonych wymarciem w Polsce, takich jak: Ch. aspera, Ch. filiformis, Ch. hispida, Ch. intermedia, Ch. polyacantha, Ch. rudis i Nitella mucronata.
The paper is a compilation of stonewort records made during the field surveys in various regions of Poland in the years 2010–2012. We present in detail habitat conditions of 52 sites with 15 charophytes representing 3 genera: Chara (12 species), Nitella (2) and Nitellopsis (1). Among them, there are some of the rarest Polish charophytes like Chara connivens considered extinct in Poland and endangered species like: Ch. aspera, Ch. filiformis, Ch. hispida, Ch. intermedia, Ch. polyacantha, Ch. rudis and Nitella mucronata. Chara vulgaris, Ch. contraria, Ch. globularis and Ch. virgata have been the most frequently found species. Numerous records of charophytes outside glacial lakes (in Poland commonly regarded as the main habitat of stoneworts) are particularly noteworthy. Stoneworts were recorded mostly in shallow and very shallow waters. However, in some deep sand- and stone pits they occurred to a depth of 8.7 m. Surprisingly, charophytes were also found in rural landscape areas included in agri-environment schemes (Ch. vulgaris, Ch. globularis, Ch. hispida, Ch. tomentosa, Ch. virgata). The most often recorded species in such habitats was Chara vulgaris var. longibracteata. Chara vulgaris was also the most frequently recorded species in all types of habitats, confirming its wide ecological amplitude and distribution. Most data of Silesia-Cracow Upland of 2010–2012 were published in detail separately, however, we used them in summaries, analysis and conclusions, which cover a total of 22 species in 108 sites (230 records).

Opis:
This paper presents localities of charophytes in the Puszcza Zielonka Landscape Park (Wielkopolska, Poland). In this area, 16 species of stoneworts occur, constituting 47% of national species from this group. The following are the most frequent species: Chara intermedia, C. tomentosa, C. virgata and Nitellopsis obtusa. Four critically endangered species in Poland (Nitella tenuissima, N. capillaris, N. gracilis and Chara tenuispina) were also recorded. Our research has demonstrated: (1) considerable diversity of charophytes on a relatively small area situated in the vicinity of a large urban centre of Poznań, (2) major importance of protected areas such as nature reserves, landscape parks, or Natura 2000 areas etc. for the preservation of charophyta lake habitats, and (3) the significance of the forms of land use in the catchment areas, where forest vegetation or less dense presence of trees and shrubs prevents eutrophication of the water bodies and thus contributes to the protection of the stonewort species occurring there.

Opis:
Ever since its introduction, computed tomography has come a long way. No longer is it merely a method that is used in clinical diagnostics, but it is becoming more and more popular among palaeontologists because it can be used to analyse both external and internal structures of fossil remains, such as small insects, snail shells and plant remains. The present study describes non-destructive analyses of Late Cretaceous and early Holocene charophyte gyrogonites by using the micro-CT technique, from sample preparation (embedding, fixing) to visualisation and assessment of images obtained. In addition to this non-destructive examination, we wished to test whether or not computed tomography could be used to examine the gyrogonites. Our preliminary results have made it clear that the micro-CT technique is worth employing for further research. It has proved possible to visualise the samples in 3D, rotate them, and observe them from different directions. By using the appropriate parameters, we have also been able to observe density differences between parts of characean remains and to study several important defining features of these.
