Opis:: The objective of the studies was to characterise the population dynamics of pine−shoot beetles (Tomicus piniperda L. and T. minor Hart.; Coleoptera: Scolytidae) and to evaluate differences in their abundances in different parts of selected pine stands. Beetle abundances were monitored using pheromone traps with Tomodor dispenser distributed on control plots over a total area of about 400 hectares. Observations indicated a high dynamics of beetle abundances in subsequent years, as well as a high spatial variation in beetle abundances within the study area. Besides, it was shown that changes in pine−shoot beetle abundances in the stands under study were, to a great extent, asynchronic.

Opis:: The paper provides an assessment of damage to pine shoots in the stands growing within the reach of reproduction spots of beetles. The results point to beetle feeding preferences of the upper parts of shoots, dependence of needle drop on weather conditions and inapplicability of beetle double attacks in forecasting pest occurrence.

Opis:: The paper synthesises results from the study on pine−shoot beetles occurring in 10 types of forest habitat in seven forest districts of central Poland. The paper provides assessment of three methods for collecting insect−induced needle drop, as well as its quantities in age and bonitet classes in pure and mixed pine stands.

Opis:: The paper provides an evaluation of the effectiveness of the methods used to forecast pine−shoot beetles based on the collection of dropped needles. The relative error analysis used to evaluate the density of fallen needles showed that entomological monitoring was the most efficient among the compared methods. Early and late autumn, as well as spring proved to be the optimal time for collecting the fallen needles after the disappearance of the snow cover.

Opis:: The threat of infestation by pine−shoot beetles in Występa stands was assessed on the basis of the needle drop in the Zagnańsk Forest District in the period 2001−2002. The efficiency of the entomological monitoring and undercanopy plots method used for the collection of damaged needles was assessed. Research results indicate that the forecasts of pine−shoot beetles in forest practice using one or two undercanopy study plots can appear to be the cause of the error in assessing the degree of infestation of stands. The method of entomological monitoring is more representative and efficient thanks to the greater area of needle collection irrespective of the closing of the canopy.

Opis:: The studies were conducted in the years 1992−1996 and 2001−2002 in the Węgle Forest Sub−district, Zagnańsk Forest District. The aim of the studies was to compare the spatial pattern of needle drop caused by Tomicus sp. and the dbh increment in pine stands before and after the liquidation of the sawmill and timber landing. Eight zones at different distances from the sawmill were distinguished: I – edge zone, II – 100 m, III – 300 m, IV – 500 m, V – 700 m, VI – 900 m, VII – 1100 m and VIII – 2000 m (control). The needle drops were collected from each zones using under−canopy plots of 4 m². in size and drilling into trees at the dbh using a Suunto increment borer. Research results confirmed the significant effect of the reproduction centres of Tomicus sp. on the losses in tree increments. The higher significant values of the needle drop during the functioning of the timber landing were related to the lower values of the dbh increment, and with the low needle drop following the liquidation of the landing the increment values were levelled in first zones.
