Opis:
The analysis of the clutch size variability in Cormorant (P. carbo sinensis) was based on study results in colony at the “Jeziorsko Reservoir” (central Poland) in 2004. There were used 328 broods controlled 3-5 times in the season. Number of eggs in a single clutch ranged from 1 to 7, although Cormorants mostly laid 3 to 5 eggs. Mean clutch size was 3.80 (SD = 1.0 0). The size of clutch depended on time of laying eggs and the part of colony where the nest with brood was localised. The clutch size was bigger for pairs that started laying eggs earlier and lower for birds bred in the part of colony where the number of nests and their density were low.

Opis:
The Strategy for Development of Central Poland unit 2020 in the 2030 Perspective is the fourth subrargional strategy adopted by the Council of Ministers. The preparation on the Strategy has started in 2012 by self-governments of Łódzkie and Mazowieckie voivodeships by signing a memorandum on inter-regional cooperation. The memorandum has resulted a preparation of the Concept of the Development Strategy of the Macroregion of Central Poland 2030. The Concept defined the areas of cooperation, which were due from identified development potentials of both voivodeships and the development objectives of the macroregion . The document has become a base for preparation the Strategy for Development of Central Poland by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development. The vision of the Central Poland development, which states: MACROREGION OF CENTRAL POLAND AS THE AVANT-GARDE OF THE 21st CENTURY EUROPE, presents the desirable image of the macroregion and responds to the need to build the most dynamic, competitive, creative and innovative part of Poland, recognizable in Europe and globally. The main objective has been defined as THE INCREASE OF INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE OF CENTRAL POLAND AS THE FRIENDLY SPACE FOR CREATION AND TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE AND INNOVATION. The unique development potentials, which shall be the key to increased competitiveness, have been defined as: science, research and development, creative sector, medicine and pharmacy, agriculture and agri-food processing and transport, and logistics. For these five strategic potentials were formulated the specific objectives and intervention directions. The implementation of specific objectives depends on four horizontal intervention directions: accessibility and integration, creativity and innovativeness, re-industralisation and internationalization.

New magnetostratigraphic data from the Middle Buntsandstein section, drilled in the Brześć Kujawski IG-1 borehole (Central Poland), are presented and discussed. The chronostratigraphic positions of particular formations of the Buntsandstein are discussed as well. The magnetic polarity pattern obtained from the Brześć Kujawski IG-1 borehole matches the pattern obtained earlier in other boreholes from the Polish part of the Central European Basin. Although magnetostratigraphy and palynological evidence undoubtedly indicates that the Induan/Olenekian boundary in the Polish part of the CEB is located in the lower part of the Pomerania Formation, the placement of the Olenekian/Anisian boundary within the sedimentary sequences of the Central European Basin remains problematic. This boundary most probably is located within the upper part of the Upper Buntsandstein, as can be inferred from palynological studies.

Grabia, a small still close to natural conditions lowland river, has been an object of special interest for Łódź hydrobiologists for more than 50 years. Over 100 scientific papers and over 100 master theses were produced in the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection University of Łódź. The initiator was Prof.L.K. Pawłowski who spent many years conducting research into the river. The ground and the first research objective was to recognize the fauna diversity. The checklist encompass almost 1000 invertebrate and 24 fish species. Taxonomy, biology and ecology of various taxa have made for many decades an essential trend of scientific activity. Special attention was dedicated to rotifers, leeches, branchiobdellids, snails and bivalves, gammarids and copepods as well as aquatic insects, fish and also diatoms. Some aspects of zoobenthos and Zooplankton communities ecology was the subject of 13 Ph.D.theses. The river with its rich animal and plant communities was also the subject of dynamics of river ecosystem research. The study on the structure of invertebrate assemblages on the background of habitat diversity has been recently conducted. The model may be treealed as a reference to the restoration of Europaean rivers and their valleys.

Opis:
This article analyses the characteristics of paraglacial environment that are recorded in sediments and forms, within the context of the development of views on the relief of Central Poland in the area beyond the extent of the Vistulian (Weichselian) Glaciation. The original relief of the analysed area was formed during the Warta Glaciation (Wartanian, Late Saalian). Until the 1950s, the relief was considered as glacial, when the opinion that periglacial morphogenesis had great significance was prevalent. According to the hypothesis, periglacial processes dominated the original glacial relief, until denudational periglacial plains with tors were formed. However, since the 1960s, more and more data have been documented concerning good preservation of fragments of glacial landscape, particularly within the range of kame fields. In the 1990s, a concept of polygenesis of the relief was presented, stressing the importance of periglacial environment. However, it must be noted that all views on the genesis of the area that have been presented so far still have a gap in the light of contemporary interpretation of the concept of periglacial environment. There is a need to take into account the so-called paraglacial environment, which has hardly been distinguished until now in areas of Pleistocene glaciation. According to present knowledge, the relief of the Warta belt in Central Poland should be recognised as polygenic with predominant features of old glacial relief and with elements of paraglacial, periglacial and fluvio-denudational relief from moderate periods.

Opis:
The Złota Góra hills (Central Poland) have been variously interpreted as a kame, a sandur and as different types of moraine. Due to their morphology and internal structure, the Złota Góra hills differ, however, from typical depositional glacigenic landforms in the European lowlands. Morphologically, the Złota Góra hills consist of numerous asymmetrical and oval hills of various sizes. The deposits show a wide variety of lithofacies, which are diagnostic for debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, sheetfloods, braided rivers, deltas and ephemeral lakes. The combination of such deposits is characteristic of an environmental setting including both an end moraine fan (debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, sheetfloods and ephemeral lake deposits) and a sandur (braided river, sheetfloods, and delta or ephemeral lake deposits). Therefore, these hills must be interpreted as representing an end moraine/sandur massif. The hills were probably formed subaerially by meltwater in an interlobate area of the retreating Scandinavian ice sheet.

Opis:
The recent stratigraphical and paleontological research in the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary sequence in central Poland confirmed a validity of the hitherto accepted local ostracod zonation. Six ostracod zones have been compared with the zones distinguished in England, France and Germany. From 51 ostracod species and subspecies recorded in the sequence of superposing marine-brackish and brackish-fresh-water sediments the author describes the following new species and subspecies: Limnocythere biverrucosa, Timiriasevia polonica, Cypridea aleksandrowiensis, C. wandae, C. binodosa polonica, C. dunkeri spinosa, C. granulosa polonica, C. lata polonica, C. obliqua polonica, C. prealta iuvencula and C. tumescens granulosa.
W pracy ukazano zróżnicowanie zespołów małżoraczkowych w purbeku Kujaw (figs. 1—4, tabele 1—2) oraz przedstawiono opisy i ilustracje (pls. 1—8) 4 nowych gatunków (Limnocythere biverrucosa, Timiriasevia polonica, Cypridea aleksandrowiensis, C. wandae) i 7 podgatunków (Cypridea binodosa polonica, C. dunkeri spinosa, C. granulosa polonica, C. lata polonica, C. obliqua polonica, C. prealta iuvencula, C. tumescens granulosa). Bielecka i Sztejn 1966). Analogicznie do purbeku Anglii (por. Anderson 1985), w polskim purbeku wyróżniono zespoły małżoraczków charakterystyczne dla trzech faz ekologicznych: brakiczno-słodkowodnej fazy C, morsko-brakicznej fazy S oraz hypersalinarnej fazy E. Na Kujawach przeważają małżoraczki fazy S (fig. 2). W polskim purbeku obserwuje się zdecydowaną przewagę małżoraczków nad otwornicami. Stwierdzono tu obecność następujących nadrodzin małżoraczków. Cytheracea, Darwinulacea i Cypridacea. Szczególnie wiele rodzajów należy do Cytheracea. Niektóre małżoraczki, jak Klieana alata Martin, Rhinocypris jurassica (Martin), Cypridea prealta prealta Bielecka i C. lata polonica subsp. n. występują masowo i w kolekcji liczą od około tysiąca do kilku tysięcy skorupek. Inne są reprezentowane zaledwie przez kilka lub kilkanaście egzemplarzy, do nich należą M. (Macrodentina) maculata Malz, M. (Dictyocythere) aff. mediostricta transfuga Malz i Protocytheropteron brodiei (Jones). Otwornice, to nieliczne formy zlepieńcowate.

Carboniferous sandstones and shales encountered in deep boreholes drilled in central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., represent a pseudoflysch i.e. they show facies features of flysch and, simultaneously, are of cratonic provenance. Clastic sediments were derived from a peripheral bulge formed within the East European Craton as a result of stresses exerted by the accretion/thrust wedge advancing up the marginal part of the craton. In central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., a Variscan foredeep existed. The foredeep was the depositional site of interfingering exo- and pseudoflysch which, from a geodynamic point of view, are equivalent to an outer molasse. Huge masses of Carboniferous deposits (generally corresponding to flysch) from southwestern and central Poland successively represent, moving from SW to NE, Variscan ortho-, exo- and pseudoflysch.

For this purpose, the micromorphological analysis was carried out for a sample taken from the surface of a tree covered island. The analysis is laborious, but its great advantage is that it allows to determine the detailed characteristics of undisturbed sediments, supplying other lithological studies. Examined thin section showed fractionation lamination within medium and fine sands, interbedded with coarser grains with some organic admixtures. Detailed analysis allows to detect gradual and sudden changes of discharge energy.

Results of stable isotope, Cladocera and pollen analyses of lacustrine sediments from Besiekierz (Central Poland) are presented. The Besiekierz palaeolake is located about 25 km north of Łódź (Central Poland) at 130 m a.s.l. The 4 m thick deposits comprise silty sands and clayey silts, overlain by calcareous gyttja and organic silts and peat. Pollen analysis documents that these deposits accumulated during the Eemian Interglacial and the Early Vistulian. Based on the results of stable isotope analyses, nine isotopic horizons (Is) were defined and characterized, and these enabled reconstruction of both climatic and hydrological changes. A positive trend in δ18O values and constant values of δ 13 suggest gradual climatic warming, while constant values of δ 18O and δ 13C indicate stable conditions and/or a fast rate of sedimentation. The fluctuation of isotopic values in the upper part of the succession probably points to a shallowing of the lake due to sedimentary infill. The subfossil cladoceran fauna in the Besiekierz succession is represented by 11 solely littoral species belonging to 3 families. Four zones of Cladocera development were distinguished. The Besiekierz palaeolake was a shallow reservoir. The initial period of its existence probably saw its greatest depth. The Cladocera species present indicate the initial oligotrophic status of the lake and its subsequent increase in trophic status. We compare the results of the isotopic, cladoceran and published palynological analyses, to distinguish and explain the phases of evolution of the lake.

Opis:
Petrographic analysis, including the indicator erratics count method of coarse pebbles (20–60 mm), was performed for the first subsurface layer of the glacial till in the vicinity of the city of Radom. Crystalline rocks comprise 60% of the sample, whereas carbonate and clastic sedimentary rocks total 18% and 15%, respectively. Among the crystalline rocks, 14% clasts were identified as indicator erratics. The majority of the indictor erratics originated from the Åland region (63%). Significant contributions were also derived from the central Baltic Basin (12%), Ångermanland (9%) and Uppland (9%) regions. Trace amounts are recorded from the northern Baltic, Dalarna and Småland regions. The spatial distribution of crystalline erratic source areas suggests material incorporation into an ice sheet mainly from central-eastern Fennoscandia. The indicator assemblage composition indicates the Odranian (MIS 6) origin of the till. The majority of the erratic sedimentary rocks were derived from the central and southern Baltic Basin while local rocks comprise a minor proportion. The relatively low carbonate clasts content indicates that the till was affected by partial decalcification resulting from post-depositional chemical weathering. This study supplements the results on erratic pebble provenance in the glacial tills of Middle Polish Glaciation Complex in Poland.

Opis:
In the central part of the Rawka lobe of the Warta stage ice sheet of the Middle Polish glaciation (Saalian), areal déglaciation took place in the vicinity of Łódź. This is indicated by the numerous kames here, among which ridge forms are conspicuous. Some of the ridges which are situated on the slopes of river valleys and on the slopes terrain depression possess unusual shapes which resemble „tongues" and „paws". These forms merge gently with the adjacent elevated upland, whereas their distal parts are sharply defined and may lie as much as several decametres above their bases. „Kame tongues" and „karne paws" are built from paraglaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial deposits which accumulated in water bodies between dead ice blocks during the final phases of the ice sheet downwasting. The distinctive shapes of the landforms result from the varying thickness of the dead ice masses: thinner on the elevations and significantly thicker in terrain depressions (mainly in large, subglacial pre-Wartian valleys). These characteristic kame ridges demonstrate that the more elevated parts of the subglacial surface had been ice free for a long time before the dead ice blocks eventually disappeared from the terrain depressions.

Tithonian (= “Middle Volgian”) carbonate rocks are exposed in Owadów-Brzezinki quarry 19 km southeast of Tomaszów Ma-zowiecki, central Poland. In the upper part of the Sławno Limestone Member, chitinoidellids have been identified in thin sections from three samples, only. Therefore, the documented part of the Chitinoidella Zone in Owadów-Brzezinki quarry is about 0.3 m thick. The identified chitinoidellid taxa suggest that this assemblage represents the Upper Tithonian Boneti Subzone. The Chitinoidella Zone occurs at the top of Unit I and correlates with the uppermost interval of the Zarajskensis Horizon (Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2016). Other microfossils identified in the Chitinoidella Zone consist of Saccocoma sp. and benthic foraminifera of the genus Planularia. Calcareous dinoflagellate cysts (Cadosina semiradiata semiradiata Wanner and C. cf. semiradiata semiradiata Wanner) occur above the chitinoidellid assemblage, in the strata corresponding to the Gerassimovi Subzone of the Virgatus Zone (Matyja, Wierzbowski, 2016). Calcareous nannofossils are extremely rare in the thin sections studied; only one small specimen was seen, identified as Rhombolithion minutum (Rood et al., 1971) Young et Bown 2014. In contrast, microbial filaments are frequently observed in the studied thin sections. Their shape and pattern are reminiscent of some recent Cyanobacteria of the order Nostocales, however the Tithonian microbial filaments are much thinner.

The paper presents palynological data from Bieganin, a village located near Kalisz, Central Poland, where organic sediments were deposited in a subglacial trough dating from the Wartanian Glaciation. The succession of vegetation is characteristic of the Eemian Interglacial. The pollen diagram indicates six local pollen assemblages: B1-Pinus-Betula, B2-Betula-Pinus-Ulmus, B3-Quercus-Corylus, B4 -Corylus, B5-Carpinus-Tilia-Polypodiaceae, B6-Pinus-Picea which correlate well with regional pollen assemblages obtained by Mamakowa (1989b) and Tobolski (1991). The plant succession in Bieganin started in the beginning of the Eemian (zone E1) and ended with the development of coniferous forest (zone E6). The profile does not include the final zone, E7, of the interglacial.

Opis:
Nine boreholes were drilled in the late eighties in central Poland to investigate the Middle Jurassic sedimentary successions. The boreholes were arranged in three lines (Ciechocinek, Brześć Kujawski and Wojszyce lines) running across three anticlines underlain by salt pillows. Long intervals of boreholes have been cored, often with 100% core recovery, thus enabling a detailed examination of sedimentary evolution. Sequences are composed of a full range of clastic rocks, from conglomerates through sandstones and heteroliths to shales. They are arranged in sedimentary cycles, predominantly regressive (coarsening upwards). These are interpreted as deposited in a shallow, wave/storm-dominated, shelf environment, each cycle being a result of progradation of fore-shore to near-shore heteroliths and sands over the shales of an open sea. The basin was probably non-tidal or microtidal. These essential (lower order) cycles, equivalents of the IVth order cycles in the world-wide scheme, are assembled in higher order cycles which resemble the IIIrd order cycles of that scheme. The bases of the higher order cycles are good lithostratigraphic markers, three of them being probably equivalents of chronostratigraphic boundaries (bases of the upper Aalenian, upper Bajocian and Bathonian, respectively). Correlation of borehole sections points to limited salt movement of the Ciechocinek and Wojszyce salt pillows during the Middle Jurassic. These are indicated, first of all, by thickness reductions seen in boreholes located above the tops of salt pillows. In the Ciechocinek area, the upward movement of salt occurred during the latest Bajocian/earliest Bathonian while in the Wojszyce area - during the early Bathonian. Coarser clastics were shed into the basin from the south-west, north-west (along the Mid-Polish Trough) and north-east during the Aalenian, and mainly from the north-east (from the East European Craton) in later times.

The Łanięta site with fossil lake deposits is situated just in front of the maximum extent of Vistulian Glaciation ice. Palynological analysis shows that lake accumulation lasted through the Eemian Interglacial and almost the whole Early Vistulian, the longest record of this time interval in this part of Poland. Two warm interstadial-rank oscillations (Brörup and Odderade) and two stadials have been distinguished during the Early Vistulian. The older of these is correlated with the Herning Stadial while younger one equates with the Rederstal Stadial of the German succession.

The study was conducted in the Rzymsko esker, in the Eastern part of the Turek Upland Plain, within the range of the Warta Glaciation (Saalian II). The form was accumulated in a tunnel valley, which was partially filled with esker sediments. Lithofacies analysis, extended by a detailed analysis of clasts, made it possible to identify a considerable variability of sedimentation conditions. At the initial stage, transport and accumulation of sediments took place in the conditions of high energy hydraulic flows or hyperconcentrated flows. The flow energy rose cyclically, which was recorded as sediments coarsening. Deposits of boulders as well as massive and cross-bedded gravels were identified, a record of catastrophic glacial floods. During the later stage of esker formation, sandy and gravelly sediments were accumulated in an open crevasse. The strong erosional force of subglacial water is confirmed by an extremely high content of local rocks in the gravelly fraction (30–87%) and its very good roundness. Zingg shape analysis (1935) revealed a clear predominance of oblate forms among local clasts and equant fennoscandian erratics. A dependency was also found between the processing method and petrographic characteristics.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research into the plant macrofossils found in the tectonic Kleszczów Graben, within Mesopleistocene sandy sediments. A number of samples were collected at eight locations from river sediments containing variously sized fragments of plants, mostly from greenish sands overlying Neogene sediments. The structural characteristics of the sediments show a cyclic record of the formation of point bars, their washing out at supercritical conditions, and their aggradation by fine-grained material during flow waning. Based on lithological and structural studies, it has been demonstrated that the sands accumulated in an environment of a meandering river, whose valley bottom was covered with fairly dense vegetation, inhibiting the influx of mineral material to the floodplain from the surroundings – the valley or glacial plateau slopes. The aim of further analysis was to identify the plant genera of the individual macrofossils (about 40 specimens). The most numerous macrofossils were observed in the middle layers of the profile, within sandy megaripple structures, where mostly fragments of Fraxinus and Acer wood were present. In other layers, several fragments of Pinus and three pieces of Populus wood were identified. Additionally, young stems of dicotyledonous plants and fragments of rhytidome (the outer bark of a tree) were found. The results are discussed in combination with considerations on the deposition of the Czyżów Complex in the Bełchatów outcrop, and on the occurrence of local flora.

Geochemical and plant macrofossil analyses of the Żabieniec mire deposits and the palaeoenvironmental changes they record of the past several thousand years constitute an important source for palaeogeographical reconstruction of the Polish Lowland. We describe the phases of the basin’s development from the final part of the Plenivistulian (MIS2), through the Late Glacial and the entire Holocene, encompassing changes determined by both regional and global factors in the surrounding environment, and habitat transformations in the limnogenic mire. The kettle-hole infill of the Żabieniec mire is the only documented example in Central Poland of a succession of biogenic deposits exceeding 10 m in thickness in such a setting. Deposition initially took place in a lake environment, which led to a shallowing of the lake that persisted until the end of the Mesoholocene.

Opis:
The paper presents abiotic resources which are located in a small town in central Poland. They remain unknown to authorities and inhabitants. For the first time they are illustrated in a scientific paper. The objects of local geological heritage point to geodiversity of this district town in the south-western Mazovia. When the geodiversity is interpreted in a simple, an understandable way, it may become attractive for tourists. We show how abiotic resources located within an urban area can be used to support urban geotourism development. The scientific, educational and aesthetic values of these resources may create the town image in accordance with the principles of environmental protection.

Opis:
The impact of anthropopressure on the flora in the vicinity of the Bełchatów Brown Coal Mine in Central Poland has been substantially strong. Consequently, certain changes in habitat conditions have been observed, leading to a decline in particular species stands. Mechanical damage, as well as the mine and power plant expansion have contributed to further species decline in the area. Ex situ conservation, e.g. metaplantation from native to secondary localities seems an efficient method of ensuring the species survival in the local flora. One of the species is to be found in Wola Wydrzyna (under the Forest District Administration of Bełchatów) is Drooping Bittercress Dentaria enneaphyllos. Its population was first recorded in the area in 1979. However, since 2009 the forest complex has undergone a regular expansion of the Bełchatów Brown Coal Mine. The forest area is to be utilised for the future Szczerców coal deposit. Therefore, in 2000 the method of Dentaria enneaphyllos metaplantation was applied.

The Tomczyce nature reserve is characterized by a degenerated forest vegetation. We assume that the regeneration process was possible to launch after the establishment of the nature reserve in 1968. The vegetation of the Tomczyce forest complex was characterized for the first time by Jakubowska-Gabara (1976) whose studies were taken as a basis of our research. The phytocenoses after 40. years of protection have a greater participation of species with higher trophic and moisture requirements. The regeneration process in communities with pine trees is caused by an expansion of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Transformation of forest vegetation causes a decrease in cover of thermophilous and heliophilous species. On the other hand, species of oak-hornbeam forests as well as anthropophytes are in expansion. Planning of the protection activities in the nature reserve needs to include these dynamic tendencies of the vegetation.

Opis:
Palynological analysis of the Tomisławice opencast mine deposits has allowed reconstruction of the plant communities and investigation of the evolution of sedimentary environments at various stages of lignite-forming marsh development, recorded in the composition of pollen assemblages from deposits of the 1st Mid-Polish lignite seam (MPLS-1). Rich pollen communities from an ~9 m thick section has enabled study of the succession of plant communities and of the evolution of phytogenic sedimentation. The pollen succession indicates that the assemblages in the whole lignite seam represent the VIII Celtipollenites verus pollen Zone. Slight differences in the composition of the communities reflect different stages of basin development, depending more on the variable water dynamics than on climatic oscillations. Lignite of the MPLS-1 developed in a continental regime on alluvial plains. Changes in the succession of plant communities in the Tomisławice section record flooding-drainage cycles caused by groundwater level oscillations. Peat bog accumulation took place in river basins, in which the lack of siliciclastic intercalations within the massive lignite seams points to weak fluvial dynamics. A rise in groundwater level and/or surface water resulted in flooding of the marshes and the formation of an extensive shallow lake basin, as shown by the presence of freshwater algae and pollen of aquatic plants. The section as a whole does not record an increased contribution of thermophilic plant taxa. The flora was generally dominated by warm-temperate and thermophilic species, without the participation of strongly thermophilic vegetation, which indicates that the lignite seam in the Tomis³awice opencast mine was formed in the generally stable conditions of a warm temperate climate.

Opis:
Siliceous sponges are extremely abundant in the Upper Campanian-Maastrichtian opokas and marls of the Middle Vistula River Valley, situated in the western edge of the Lublin Basin, part of the Cretaceous German-Polish Basin. This is also the only one area in Poland where strata bearing the Late Maastrichtian sponges are exposed. The presented paper is a taxonomic revision of sponges collected from this region. Based both on existing and newly collected material comprising ca. 1750 specimens, 51 species have been described, including 18 belonging to the Hexactinosida, 15 - to the Lychniscosida and 18 - to Demospongiae. Among them, 28 have not been so far described from Poland. One new genus Varioporospongia, assigned to the family Ventriculitidae Smith and two new species Varioporospongia dariae sp. n. and Aphrocallistes calciformis sp. n. have been described. Comparison of sponge fauna from the area of Podilia, Crimea, Chernihov, and Donbas regions, as well as literature data point to the occurrence of species common in the analysed area and to the basins of Eastern and Western Europe. This in turn indicates good connections between particular basins of the European epicontinental sea during the Campanian-Maastrichtian. Analysis of the taxonomic composition of the Middle Vistula assem- blage suggests that the occurring sponge fauna is transitional between the faunas of Eastern and Western Europe, what may be linked with the central location of the Lublin Basin in the European epicontinental sea. The gradual upward decrease of taxonomic diversity of the Hexactinosida and Lychniscosida in the studied succession points to gradual basin shallowing, what is consistent with the global regressive trend by the end of the Cretaceous. The domination of the Hexactinellida over the lithistids in terms of diversity and abundance in the entire section allows us to estimate the maximum depth of the Late Campanian basin as 200-250 m and to constrain the minimum depth during the latest Maastrichtian as about 100 m.

The present study focuses on the upper Neogene deposits, called the “Poznań Clays”, that cover more than 75,000 km2 of Poland. They are situated between the first midPolish lignite seam and the glaciogenic deposits of the Pleistocene age. Lithostratigraphically, the “Poznań Clays” belong to the uppermost portion of the lignite-bearing Grey Clays Member and the whole Wielkopolska Member (Poznań Formation). The examined fine-grained sediments include mud-rich floodplain deposits with palaeosol remnants and large sandy-muddy or muddy palaeochannel bodies. Therefore, taking into account facies analysis, cross-sectional geometry, and the planform of the palaeochannels, it can be stated that the “Poznań Clays” formed in the environment of a late Neogene anastomosing river.

Opis:
Fens have been forming in the river valleys of central Poland since the Bølling and went through a transformation from fully aquatic to semiterrestrial habitats during the Younger Dryas/Holocene transition. This drove plant and invertebrate communities and left a distinct pattern in chemical sediment composition, which is why river valley peatlands are sensitive palaeo-archives of climatic, hydrological and edaphic changes. Here we reconstruct the Late Weichselian history of the Bęczkowice fen in the upper Luciąża River valley using geochemical, pollen, Cladocera and Chironomidae proxies. Pollen-based age estimation indicates that the analysed peat sequence dates from the Bølling to Early Holocene. The layers 190-170 cm and 125-105 cm of the studied core were reworked by fluvial processes. Chironomidae and Cladocera communities indicate mostly limnetic conditions during the Allerød and early Younger Dryas. Peatland pools were supplied mostly by Luciąża River floods, but also by groundwater. Since the onset of the Holocene, the water level has dropped, eliminating aquatic midges and water fleas, and supporting taxa typical of astatic waters and wet soil.

Opis:
The paper presents the data on an Eemian–Late Glacial sedimentary sequence from the Zwierzyniec site, central Poland. A number of boreholes document one or two organic layers that occur beneath one or two horizons of clayey and silty deposits of ice-dammed lakes. This study demonstrates to which extent the Zwierzyniec site can contribute to a better understanding of the palaeoenvironmental changes during the Eemian–Vistulian time-frame in central Poland. To study it, a multi-proxy approach was applied, involving: palynological and plant macrofossil analysis, study of rounding of quartz grains and morphology of their surface, and investigations of sand mineralogy and till petrography. The results show that a till bed is overlain by a sandy series corresponding to the glacial-interglacial transition. Either one or two distinct peaks of organic accumulation are evidenced by peat horizons. The lower horizon records spectra with hazel and hornbeam, and did, therefore, accumulate in the Eemian. Observed only in some boreholes, the upper peat horizon marks the Brørup (or the lower part of the Rederstall stadial) represented by forest-steppe conditions with patchy mosaics of larch and further transition into sedges and herbaceous taxa. Localized in between the two peat sequences, the sandy horizon marks a long-lasting aeolian transformation with weathering by frost in the Early Vistulian. Again, significant changes of the palaeoenvironmental regime occurred, and are manifested in the one or two horizons of the glaciolacustrine sediments. This corresponded to the last glaciation in the region, when the ice-dammed lakes formed during the Main Stadial.

Bat species, their sex and age were determined based on photos made by ornithologists. In total, 32 individuals of six species were recorded. The most abundant were: Plecotus auritus (13) and Myotis daubentonii (9), i.e., species foraging close to vegetation or over the water surface, and flying on relatively low height. Species common in the area but flying higher Nyctalus noctula was captured rarely. Rare and valuable species – Myotis dasycneme – was also recorded, and the presence of an adult female suggests the occurrence of a breeding colony in the vicinity of the study site.

The article presents results of research of three sections (Kuców 9, 10 and 16). Two of them record fluvial and lacustrine interglacial sediments and the third, cold-stage glaciolacustrine sediments. They were formed inside the Miocene – Pliocene syncline depressions in a central part of the southern horst within the Kleszczów Graben. Fluvial and lacustrine deposits of the Middle Pleistocene Interglacial (Mazovian or Ferdynandovian in the Czyżów Formation) are described from the Kuców 9 and 10 sections. Their sediments are located in marginal parts of a buried river valley and within an oxbow palaeolake, then covered by glaciofluvial deposits of the Ławki (Early Saalian) and Rogowiec (Late Saalian) Formations. The Kuców 16 section comprises ice-dam sandy lithofacies (Kuców Formation, Elsterian) of a marginal part in a proglacial lake. Two pollen diagrams of K65/15 and Kuców 9 sections represent the Mazovian (Holsteinian) succession, although in the Kuców 9 section some features are typical for the Ferdinandovian succession.

Opis:
The Mid-Polish Trough (MPT) is well recorded in the distribution of thickness of the Mesozoic sediments. Its shape was most distinctly delineated in the Early Triassic, and Early to Middle Jurassic, when thickness gradients attaining 100 m/km were reached. However, because the regional faults bordering the MPT were not active throughout its history, the existence of Mid-Polish Rift has not been confirmed. The strongest thickness gradients may have been caused by the periodical activity of the sub-Zechstein faults, which did not penetrate the Mesozoic strata due to the damping effect of plastic Zechstein salts. On the contrary, local faults, forming (mainly during the Late Triassic) syn-sedimentary grabens, are a common feature in the MPT and its surroundings. Transversal subdivision of the MPT and its slopes into at least two segments (Pomeranian and Kuiavian) is clearly visible in the thickness pattern. It is expressed by the presence of separate depocentres, reversal of asymmetry, differences in stratigraphical sequences observed on the palaeomorphological terraces south-west of the MPT, and by the structural variations after the inversion. The scale of inversion, which transformed the MPT into the Mid-Polish Swell (MPS), is unclear and needs further investigations. Estimation of the thickness of the Upper Cretaceous sediments removed by erosion is a key problem in this respect. It should take into account both, the effects of the regional inversion and the local changes resulting from the last stage of strong salt displacements.

Opis:
The results of geodetic measurements conducted in the Inowrocław salt dome area are presented in this paper. The main aim of these studies was to determine changes in the rock mass exerted by geological processes. These processes have led to the changes in the salt dome geometry and physical properties of surrounding rocks. Degradation of the salt-gypsum cap of the dome strongly depends on the hydrogeological conditions and, particularly, on tectonic structure which has had a bearing on the uplift of the ground surface. The principal goal of the paper is to present the results of geodetic levelling surveys in the Inowrocław area wherein the mining activity was terminated in 1991. These results point to a progressive salt uplift in some areas, showing a constant rate throughout the study period.

The Koźmin South lignite open-cast pit is the southernmost exposure of Palaeogene (lower Oligocene) deposits in central Poland. This study is focused on Palaeogene pebbles of the so-called Koźmin Gravels, rede- posited in the Neogene sands. These pebbles are not known from the adjacent territory of central Poland and they vary in petrographic composition, shape and surface texture. The classification of the pebble-size particle form is determined as DI/DL (elongation ratio) and DS/DI (flatness ratio). A great number of pebbles are disc-shaped (oblate-shaped) and blade-shaped or they can be classified as platy, bladed and very bladed pebbles. The oblate-prolate index (OP) is less than -2 for 45% of the particles (typical of beach pebbles), the mean sphericity (yp) is 0.56 (typical of beach pebbles), and the mean roundness (RWt) is 0.73 (typical of beach pebbles). The data obtained from SEM analysis of quartz pebble surface micromorphology are characteristic of high mechanical energy of the littoral environment. The surface of some pebbles is excellently polished with v-shaped indentations and grooves. The average composition of the heavy mineral fraction occurring with these pebbles is marked by the predominance of zircon (exceeding 70%). All the above-mentioned data, in the light of extensive literature, indicate that more morphological features of the analysed pebbles have been inherited from the littoral/beach environment. Moreover, a detailed petrographic study was very useful for determining the prove-nance of these pebbles. The most characteristic rocks are greyish-blue quartzes. They are known only from the Sudetes Mts., situated on the NE slope of the Bohemian Massif. Thus, the rock fragments were transported at least 300 km by rivers from the Sudetes to the littoral/beach zone of the Palaeogene sea. Then, the residually-marine beach pebbles were redeposited into the Neogene debris flow and/or fluvial deposits. The present-day area of the Koźmin South lignite open-cast pit was tectonically active at that time.

The article is an attempt to find relations between geology and the dynamics of the Mesozoic surface of the Łódź Synclinorium, the Radomsko Elevation and the Bełchatów Graben and the present relief on the border of the Polish Lowlands and Uplands in its central part. Fossil relief has been compared with the present one as related to the extent of the recession phases of the Saalian (Wartanian) ice-sheet. A significant convergence has been found between the Mesozoic surface plain and the main morphologic elements. The role of elevations and fossil valleys has been stressed as stable forms in the pre-Pleistocene and contemporary landscape. Also stressed has been the meaning of grabens and elevations enforcing longer stoppages of the Wartanian stadial of the Middle Polish Glaciations.

A unique, highly time-resolved, and synchronous three-year dataset of near-surface atmospheric radon-222 as well as soil heat flux and air temperature measurements at two sites (rural and urban) in Central Poland are investigated. The recognition of temporal variability of Rn-222 and selected meteorological variables in the urban and rural areas served to create two statistical models for estimation of this radionuclide concentration at 2 m a.g.l. The description of the relationships between the variables for individual months was established on the basis of an exponential function and an exponential function with time derivative of predictor to account for the hysteresis issue. The model with time derivative provided better results. The weakest fitting of modelled data to empirical ones is observed for the winter months. During subsequent seasons, air temperature as well as QG-driven (soil heat flux) models exhibited very high agreement with the empirical data (MBE, RMSE, MAE, and ‘index of agreement’ by Willmott were used to evaluate the models). A restriction in the use of QG for Rn-222 concentration was observed only in winter in the case of snow cover occurrence, which reduces the daily QG variability. GPR method is perfectly suited for recognizing of sedimentary facies diversity in shallowly occurring sediments if there is a contrast of electrical properties between and/or within each layer. The article deals with the issue of the correlation between GPR surveys results and sedimentological analyses. As a result of this correlation a conceptual model of depositional systems of studied areas was developed. Studies were performed in two areas located in central Poland, where glacial deposits formed in the Middle Polish (Saalian) Glaciation are present. The study was based on 49 sediment samples and 21 GPR profiles. Analyses of lithofacies as well as granulometric and mineralogical composition of deposits of collected samples were carried out, showing the diversity of glacial deposits in both study sites. During GPR measurements shielded antenna with a frequency of 500 MHz was used which allowed high-resolution mapping of the internal structure of deposits and to identify four characteristic radar facies. Correlation of GPR profiles with point, one-dimensional sedimentological studies allowed the unambiguous interpretation of the GPR image and draw conclusions about the formation environment of individual units. Geophysical and sedimentological data obtained during study provide a new and detailed insight into selected glacial deposits in central Poland.

Spring-fed fens in Wardzyń represent the rare group of alkaline mires supplied by artesian groundwater. Using multidisciplinary methods (including sedimentological, hydrometric and hydrochemical, pollen, macrofossil, malacological, geochemical, radiocarbon dating, and stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses) we have been able to (1) reconstruct the main phases of spring-fed fen development, and to (2) determine the cause of Neoholocene groundwater ascension responsible for the mire inception. These phases are characterized by cyclic organic (peat) and carbonate (tufa) sedimentation associated with the Holocene fluctuations in humidity and temperature. The beginning of the activation of hydrological systems (involving the flow of confined groundwater of the Cretaceous aquifer) at Wardzyń occurred in the Subboreal period of the Holocene, after a long episode of decreased humidity initiated ca. 4.2 ka cal BP.

The work is based on data on monthly air temperatures, monthly sums of atmospheric precipitation and early potato yields in 2000–2013 obtained from seven COBORU (Research Centre for Cultivar Testing) stations situated in east-central Poland. Hydrothermal conditions during the growing season (April–July) of early potato were described by means of the Sielianinow’s coefficient. The relationships between potato yields and the Sielianinow’s hydrothermal coefficient of the growing season were examined using multiple regression equations generated by means of the step-wise regression procedure followed by polynomial regression procedure. The average Sielianinow’s coefficient values ranged from 1.43 in April to 1.66 in May during the early potato growing season in east-central Poland. The applied statistical methods revealed that the hydrothermal factors impacted on early potato yields, particularly in the second stage of potato growth and development.

The paper concentrates on seasonal and spatial variations of sub-daily water temperature dynamics in lowland agricultural streams. Temperature monitoring was carried out in 24 sampling sites distributed along the tributaries of the Wkra River during the hydrological year 2021. Statistical analysis of the obtained data documented the highest water temperature dynamics in the morning, from 5:00 to 9:00 CEST, while the lowest - from 14:00 to 18:00 CEST. Seasonally, greater water dynamics were noted in the winter, expressed by a coefficient of variation reaching up to 100%. Spatially, the highest dynamics occurred in sites with the lowest proportion of riparian vegetation, while the lowest dynamics was related to higher catchment area. In the winter, the minimum daily values were recorded most frequently in the morning hours, while maximum values in the afternoon. A similar pattern was observed in the summer, but with much lower dispersion of the relative frequencies. It was found that in the winter, the dominant influence on temperature dynamics was exerted in the upstream catchment area, while in the summer, a negative relationship with riparian shade was marked. The findings suggest that the presence of riparian vegetation reduces diurnal dynamics of water temperature and is simultaneously extremely important in prolonging the duration of optimum fluctuation, responsible for the proper development of poikilothermic organisms.

Opis:
Our high-resolution data of pollen and macrofossils from 2 cores taken from the Jagodne site (Garwolin Plain) reveals a pollen succession covering the final part of the Late Saalian (Marine Isotope Stage MIS 6) and embracing the Eemian (MIS 5e). The results correspond to Regional Pollen Assemblage Zones (RPAZ). The hornbeam phase (E5 RPAZ) has been subdivided into subzones and compared to the corresponding division of the key profile of the Garwolin Plain, Kozłów K2-19. The comparison revealed a considerable sedimentary hiatus in the E5 RPAZ at Jagodne. This is attributed to significant palaeohydrological changes occurring widely in this zone, and also seen at other Eemian sites in Poland. Another specific feature of the Jagodne site is the early, rapid terrestrialisation of the palaeolake and its transformation into a raised bog, which occurred already at the end of the hornbeam phase. The Sphagnum dominated peatbog developed for a long time as evidenced by a thick peat layer covering also the Early Vistulian. Both pollen and plant macrofossil data correspond well to observed lithological boundaries, providing a consistent record of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimate changes. The results obtained contribute to knowledge of palaeoenvironmental changes and palaeoclimate interpretation of that area.

Opis:
We describe the penultimate glacial – last interglacial transition from the one of the numerous palaeolake successions in central Poland, which have yielded many documented Eemian and Early Weichselian floral records. In the new profile, Parchliny 2016, the lacustrine deposits were analysed lithologically, botanically, zoologically, and geochemically, providing new data that illustrate the environmental transition from the Late Saalian (MIS 6a) to the Eemian interglacial (MIS 5e). Five phases of palaeolake development have been distinguished. The first phase was related to the rapid melting of a dead ice block buried in the tills to form a lake. The second phase documented a Late Saalian initial succession, with the dominance of open steppe communities (Stadial 1), followed by a third phase with gradual increasing density of vegetation, the spread of boreal forests (Zeifen interstadial) and further increase in open communities and the retreat of pine (Kattegat stadial). The fourth phase reflected the beginning of Eemian interglacial by the expansion of pioneering birch-pine and purely birch forests and an increasing proportion of deciduous trees, including oak (Vth phase). Diatom, cladoceran and geochemical studies indicate at least two stages of lake development. The first stage (Late Saalian) was of an open lake (2–4 m deep), in relatively cold conditions and nutrient-poor water with the lowest amounts of organic carbon and nitrogen. The second stage (Eemian interglacial), shows warmer, shallower conditions in which the lake’s primary production increased, the water was well oxygenated, and there were more trophic levels.

A Late medieval motte-and-bailey timber castle in Gieczno was recognized by an analysis of the LiDAR derived Digital Terrain Model in 2014. The stronghold’s remnants are situated in the Moszczenica River valley, on a small hillock – most probably the residual terrace. It is preserved as a small mound, elevated no more then 1,5 m above the surrounding floodplain in the bottom of the valley. The mound has dimensions of 31 x 33 m and an area of about 890 m2. It is surrounded by a moat, about 8 to 10 m wide, and an adjacent low rampart not exceeding the height of 0.5 in relation to the bottom of the moat. The course of the rampart is interrupted in the south-eastern part. Another small, oval hillock with dimensions of approximately 23.4 x 37.9 m is noticeable there. This find should be interpreted as remains of a motte and bailey castle with an economic area which supplemented the mound. In 2015, a field investigation was run by Jerzy Sikora from the Institute of Archaeology of University of Łódź. During two weeks of field work, two trenches were explored: Trench 1 (with dimensions of 1,5 x 35 m) cut the mound from its center to the South through the moat and the outer rampart in order to obtain a cross section of the feature. Trench 2 (with dimensions of 12 x 1,5 m) was situated on the hillock (supposedly – motte) with the aim to recognize its stratigraphy. During the excavation, a collection of Late Medieval potsherds was obtain (1472 pieces) together with a small number of metal finds, bones, slag pieces and a carved wooden artefact – a part of the Late Medieval furniture piece. An analysis of the collection helped to establish its chronology to the 14th and first half of 15th centuries. The collection was distinguished by a significant number of potsherds made with the use of traditional methods and a relatively low amount of potsherds fired in a reducing (oxidizing) atmosphere. This indicates ties with the local, rural workshops rather than with the advanced manufacturing known in towns. The excavations of the Gieczno stronghold revealed two phases of the feature: • Phase I – the timber ringwork, protected with a small inner rampart, a palisade, a moat and an outer rampart can be dated by the radiocarbon analysis supported by an analysis of the finds to the 1st quarter of the14th century.

TheMiddle and Late Cambrian deposits of the Łysogóry Unit and the Early and Middle Cambrian deposits of the East European Craton form part of an extensive siliciclastic sedimentary prism that was deposited on a tide and storm influenced continental shelf. In SE Poland, the proximal part of the Cambrian passive margin sedimentary prism of the East European Craton (Baltica) corresponds to the Łysogóry Unit whereas the NE part of the Małopolska Massif is thought to represent its distal part. Based on sedimentological criteria, the Cambrian siliciclastic association appears to indicate that the Łysogóry Unit and Małopolska Massif were not detached from Baltica during the breakup of the Precambrian Rodinia supercontinent, thus casting serious doubt on the exotic terrane nature of the Holy Cross Mts. Neither the Łysogóry Unit nor the Małopolska Massif are terranes in so far as they were not subject to lateral translations along the margin of Baltica. The Cambrian phases of Caledonian deformations in the Holy Cross Mts. may be explained in terms of rotational block movements controlled by large-scale listric normal faults dipping off the craton.

A new borehole in Rożce (SW Mazovian Lowland) drilled in 2012, combined with a wide variety of research methods (palaeomagnetism, palynological analysis, studies of plant macroremains and textural features of deposits) shed new light on the age and stratigraphic position of the Early Pleistocene deposits, formerly assigned as the Lower Pleistocene. The study focuses on the deposits from 50.7-104.0 m depth, between glacial till of the Nidanian Glaciation (ca. 0.9 Ma) and the Poznań Clays (ca. 5.322 Ma). The deposits situated directly underneath the till (50.7-60.2 m) are related to the Nidanian Glaciation and show a reversed polarity and correlate with the end of the Matuyama Epoch. The deposits from 60.2-104.0 m depth were accumulated during the Early Pliocene, i.e. approximately 5.332-4.6 million years ago. They appear to correlate with the middle part of the Gilbert Palaeomagnetic Epoch and thus they are considerably older than previously thought. The cored section indicates a stratigraphic gap of about 3.5 Ma from the Lower Pliocene to the first advance of the Scandinavian ice sheets into Poland, which are thought to have occurred in the early Middle Pleistocene. The analysed deposits accumulated under variable climatic conditions showing two periods with significant aridity alternated with two periods of increased humidity. Deposits of the arid periods contain no pollen, butaeolian sand quartz grains are found. During periods of more humid climate the area was covered by various types of mixed forest.

The work assesses heat resources in central-east Poland (2001-2019). As a measure of heat resources, the concept of growing degree days (GDD) was used. GDD is a useful tool for agriculture as it takes into account the aspects of local weather and, based on it, plant development can be predicted. Daily maximum and minimum air temperatures were used to calculate GDD at 7 stations using threshold base air temperatures of 0°C (commencement of the warm season) and 5°C (start of the period of active plant growth). The following basic characteristics of the distribution were calculated: arithmetic mean, minimum and maximum values as well as coefficient of variation. The direction and significance of changes of the heat resources were determined on the basis of linear trend equations. The significance of directional coefficient of the trend was estimated with t-Student test at the significance level of α = 0.05. The average air temperature during the growing season ranged from 14.6°C in Białystok and Białowieża to 15.6°C in Włodawa, its greatest increase being recorded in Włodawa and Siedlce (by 0.36°C per year). GDD increased from north to south in the study area, but the mean GDD varied considerably from one location to another. GDD0 and GDD5 showed an upward trend over the 2001-2019 period for the study region as a whole.

Opis:
Frosts are the most common natural phenomena during the transitional seasons. A frost occurs when the average daily air temperature is positive and the minimum temperature drops below 0°C. The problem of frost occurrence (especially spring frosts) is very important from the point of view of the threats related to crop plant cultivation, because it causes losses in crops when taking place during the plant growth. The aim of the study was to analyze the occurrence of air frosts in the years 2001-2018 in the region of central-eastern Poland on the basis of meteorological data. In the region of central-eastern Poland, the greatest number of days with mild, moderate and strong frosts in 2001-2018 was observed in Białowieża; conversely, it was the lowest in Warsaw. The distribution of the number of days with frosts in spring was similar. The distribution of autumn frosts, however, was different. The greatest number of days with autumn frosts was observed in Terespol and Białowieża, the least in Legionowo and Warsaw. The last mild spring frosts occurred in the period from the 3rd to 7th of April, and the earliest autumn frosts occurred between the 9th of September and the 27th of October. The dates of moderate frosts were similar. The last strong frosts occurred on the 2nd of May and the earliest on the 30th of September. The conducted analysis proved that in such a small area, there is a difference in the occurrence of high frosts observed both in spring and autumn.

Tragophylloceras cf. loscombi (Sowerby) has been found in the Kaszewy 1 borehole (central Poland), in the Upper Pliensbachian strata (Margaritatus Zone, Subnodosus Subzone), assigned to the Drzewica Formation. Hitherto, all ammonite finds in the epicontinental Lower Jurassic in Poland have been restricted to Western Pomerania (NW Poland). This find points to a wider extent of the transgressive event occurring in the late Margaritatus Zone, following widespread regression at the beginning of this zone. Rapid and pronounced sea level changes in the early Late Pliensbachian confirms the hypothesis linking these changes with glacioeustasy.

Analiza lokalnych pól naprężeń w oparciu o pomiary orientacji i wergencji struktur deformacyjnych pozwoliła wyznaczyć kierunki głównego nacisku (transportu glacitektonicznego) skierowanego z NNE–NE ku SSW–SW w przedziale azymutów 5–42°. Analizowane struktury deformacyjne związane są z nasunięciem lądolodu zlodowacenia Odry.
Deformations of Cenozoic sediments in Koźmin exposure are situated between the second level of overlayer and a brown coal bench. In registered disturbances mesostructures in size from several to couple meters and fine structures in size from few to several dozen centimetres. The structural analysis was compiled in the spherical diagrams with the reconstruction of local ice flow. The examination of local stress poles on the basis of orientations and vergences measurements allowed to evaluate the main stress directions (glaciotectonic transport) from NNE–NE to SSW–SW (5–42° azimuth). Deformation structures are connected with ice-sheet of Odranian Glaciation.

W niniejszej pracy zestawiono i przedyskutowano serię 120 datowań radiowęglowych holoceńskich osadów eolicznych, stokowych, rzecznych i torfowiskowych. Osady te powstawały w centralnej Polsce w warunkach antropopresji. Zdarzenia w geosystemach eolicznych, stokowych, dolinnych i torfowiskowych powiązano z funkcjonowaniem osadnictwa pradziejowego i historycznego w Polsce Środkowej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na kilka okresów, podczas których dochodziło do synchronicznej transformacji rzeźby form eolicznych, stoków, den dolin rzecznych i systemów torfowiskowych.
The paper summarises and discusses a set of 120 radiocarbon dates of Holocene aeolian, slope, fluvial and peatbog sediments from Central Poland that were deposited under human impact. Based on both the Holocene chronostratigraphic division and archaeological chronology, events that led to the formation of these sediments are presented. A link is made connecting events in aeolian, slope, fluvial and peatbog geosystems to the activity of prehistoric cultures and to settlement development in modern times in Central Poland. Special attention is paid to periods in which the responses of different systems were synchronous to each other.

Opis:
The Mid-Polish Trough formed the axial part of the Polish Basin belonging to a system of the Permian-Mesozoic epicontinental basins of Western and Central Europe. It was filled by several kilometres of siliciclastics and carbonates, including thick Zechstein (approximately Upper Permian) evaporites. TheMid-Polish Trough was inverted in the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene times, when it was strongly uplifted and eroded. The presence of thick salt significantly influenced Triassic evolution of the central (Kuiavian) part of theMid-Polish Trough where the Kłodawa salt structure is located. Analysis of seismic data calibrated by several deep wells point to three main stages of the Triassic evolution of this structure. During Early andMiddle Triassic Kłodawa salt pillow grew above the basement extensional fault zone, during early Late Triassic (approx. time of deposition of the Lower Gypsum Beds) Kłodawa salt structure reached diapiric stage and salt eventually extruded on to the basin floor. Last stage was characterised by rather uniform sedimentation and lack ofmajor saltmovements. Wojszyce salt pillow located north-east of the Kłodawa salt structure grew until the Late Triassic (approx. time of deposition of the Upper Gypsum Beds) when basement fault zone located below it was probably inverted. This inversion triggered formation of the salt-cored Wojszyce Anticline and was followed by localised erosion and rather uniform Norian–Rhaetian (Lower Kłodawa Beds) sedimentation above the anticline. Local tectonic activity below the anticline might have additionally enhanced growth of the Kłodawa salt diapir. The presented tectono-sedimentary model of the relationship between basement and salt tectonics and their influence on the Triassic depositional systems is compatible with results of analogue modelling of linked basement-salt tectonics, and with a model based on mesostructural studies completed for the Kłodawa salt mine.

Sedimentary environments and palynofacies were identified in the Lower Cretaceous of central Poland. The study was based on lithological observations, sedimentological logging and palynological investigations in the following boreholes: Poddębice PIG2, Koło IG3 and IG4, Wągrowiec IG1, Sarnów IG1, Ciechocinek IG3, Mszczonów IG1, Korabiewice PIG1, Człuchów IG2, Klosnowo IG1 and Tuchola IG1. Palynological observations were correlated with sedimentological, lithofacies and paleogeographical data. Sedimentary environments and palynofacies were analysed in the vertical section, and spatially in different areas: in the central basin area, in the carbonate-clastic deposition zone, in the transitional zone (deltaic sedimentation) and in a zone of an active salt pillow. The following sedimentary environments were identified in the Lower Cretaceous: upper shoreface and lower-middle shoreface with transitions to an offshore-open marine shelf, delta (?delta front) passing up into distributary channel fills on a delta plain, presumed barrier and shallow-marine embayment, lagoon and shallow carbonate-siliciclastic shelf. In case of the absence of diagnostic features for exact determination of sedimentary environments, the environments were defined as generally marine or transitional (probably deltaic). A maximum flooding surface has been identified in the Poddębice PIG2 section, represented by a thin dark-grey marl bed which seems to be dated at the Berriasian/Lower Valanginian transition. The relationships between sedimentary environments and the characteristics of the palynofacies spectrum were determined, and a palynofacies pattern for the Lower Cretaceous of central Poland was proposed in a tabular form.

The paper reports a study of cyanobacterial diversity in a cold-water limestone limnocrene in Central Poland. Samples were collected from 1998 to 2000 and in June 2012. The morphology, population characteristics and species composition of the cyanobacteria assemblages were investigated, and the frequency of taxa was recorded. The large number of taxa identified (30) reflects the microhabitat heterogeneity of this spring. Some species considered epiphytes grew on limestone rocks. The occurrence of the majority of the most frequent taxa was related to the physicochemical characteristics of the spring, but none of them can be considered obligatory crenobionts characteristic of limestone springs. The studied spring is a unique ecosystem with an interesting cyanobacteria microflora whose occurrence is attributable to the spring’s water chemistry, low temperature and variety of microhabitats.

Opis:
Remotely obtained geodetic survey data can be used to detect anomalies in the terrain surface over different geological structures, like faults or deposit boundaries. Some computer techniques are helpful to extract the influence of geological phenomena on typical distribution of the measured elevations. Certain disturbances in profile lines can be considered as additional, human-induced effects or caused by geological processes. The paper demonstrates such an analysis basing on geodetic data with some support of geophysical results. The examined morphological profiles and profiles of subsidence bowls caused by mining in the area of Inowroclaw (central Poland) illustrate the problem of an underestimated mechanism in non-geological disciplines. For geologists this is another example of environmental interaction between relief-forming processes and subsurface conditions. Furthermore, it brings additional information about processes of mining subsidence, which is the primary topic of this study. Mutual relationships between vertical displacements induced by mining or other factors and morphological profiles point to the dominant role played by mobility of geological structures, as shown by correlation between geodetic and geophysical data.

Opis:
The paper presents a comparative analysis of a Lower Kimmeridgian layer with bored and encrusted hiatus concretions collected in three study areas, located in Central Poland. These studies demonstrate distinct similarities between the hiatus concretions in terms of their origin, development and stratigraphic position. The layer with its characteristic concretions seems to represent an important marker horizon for the Lower Kimmeridgian successions in Central Poland. The identification of this marker horizon in drill cores and exposures could be important for definition of the stratigraphic position of the sediments, which otherwise lack appropriate biostratigraphic information. The matrix of the concretions is composed of pelagic calciturbidites, which reflect flooding of the early Kimmeridgian platform. These sediments were lithified early and formed a hardground. The origin of the hiatus concretions probably is related to erosion of the hardground, followed by redeposition and several phases of exhumation and erosion, preceding final burial. The characteristic ecological successions, observed in the concretions, document an evolution from soft to firm and hard marine substrates, typical of hardgrounds and evidenced by various burrows, borings (Gastrochaenolites, Trypanites), and epizoans. Calciturbidite sedimentation, hardground erosion and redeposition of the hiatus concretions, known from deposits of the Platynota Zone in Central Poland, were associated with synsedimentary activity of the Holy Cross Fault, on the NE margin of the extensive, tectonic Małopolska Block.

Obserwacje tendencji zmian zawartości bromu okazały się pomocne w wyznaczeniu kierunku stropu ogniw solonych i wskazaniu położenia osi przypuszczalnych wielkoskalowych deformacji fałdowych w obrębie kompleksów soli kamiennej.
Detailed macroscopic profiling of salt cores from selected wells drilled in the Góra salt diapir (central Poland), supported with bromine content analyses, enabled to define and characterize the succession of Zechstein (Upper Permian) lithostratigraphic units in each well. The study results allowed also to define better the type of tectonic macrodeformations (as folds) within studied salt series, being so common in any salt diapir, but difficult to observe in well sections.

W oparciu o wyniki składu chemicznego osadów organicznych w stanowisku Koźmin Las, przedstawiono rekonstrukcję warunków środowiskowych doliny Warty pod koniec allerödu i w młodszym dryasie. Do rekonstrukcji wykorzystano dane dotyczące zawartości materii organicznej, materii mineralnej, węglanu wapnia, odczynu oraz koncentracji makro- (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn) i mikropierwiastków (Cu, Zn i Pb). Do czynników kształtujących skład chemiczny późnovistuliańskich osadów organicznych w dolinie Warty zaliczono sorpcję metali przez materię organiczną i uwodnione tlenki żelaza, zmien-ność akumulacji minerałów ilastych w środowisku sedymentacyjnym, sposób zasilania ekosystemu oraz właściwości aku-mulacyjne roślin w stosunku do określonych pierwiastków.
The chemical composition of organic deposits from the site Koźmin Las are the basis of reconstruction of envi-ronment conditions of the Warta River valley at the end of the Alleröd and in the Younger Dryas. Environmental archives presented in this study, comprise organic matter content, mineral matter content, calcium carbonate content, reaction and macro- (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn) and microelements (Cu, Zn and Pb). The sorption of metals by organic matter and hydrated iron oxides, clay minerals accumulation variability in depositional environment, water relations of the ecosystem and bioac-cumulation of some elements are the factors determining the chemical composition of organic sediments in the Warta river valley.

The paper presents the research on the increasing in the floristic diversity of abandoned Arrhenatherion elatioris meadows through the introduction of three dicotyledonous species: Achillea millefolium, Daucus carota and Leucanthemum vulgare and the re-management. They were carried out in the meadows of the landscape reserve “The Ursynów Escarpment” (“Skarpa Ursynowska”) in 2016-2018. The studies were aimed at restoring natural values of these meadows, especially their landscape and aesthetic functions. The experiment was designed in the community of Arrhenatherum elatius + Bromus inermis, as a randomised complete block, with eight replications, on the plots of 2 m2. In each plot the diaspores (collected in The Lower Pilica Valley) were sown close to the centre of the plot, within an area of 0.5×0.5 m. In the sowing year two top-cuttings and one productive one were made. In the following years the meadows were mowed once or twice. The following features were estimated: the abundance of sown species populations, the seedling density, the heights of the sown species, the height of the resident vegetation, the total ground cover, the species composition of the sward and the species richness. The improvement of the landscape and aesthetic functions of the reserve due to increasing in the species richness from 10 to 38 species and significant decreasing in Urtica dioica share was achieved. The species diversity, described with the Shannon-Wiener index, enlarged of 53% in the first year after oversowing. The introduced species decided also about the improvement of the total ground cover. Fast and lasting effect was obtained especially on the area over-sown with L. vulgare. The good effects in the first two years were obtained also in the plots with D. carota (biennial species). A. millefolium was characterised by significantly fewer number of seedlings but its population abundance was increasing gradually during the following years. The impact of high grasses (A. elatius, B. inermis) on the soil coverage by the plants of sown species and their heights was shown. The studies also proved that in the conditions of summer drought the resident vegetation may protect the seedlings against the temperature and evapotranspiration.

The aim of our study was to quantify the differences in the regeneration-degeneration processes in pine and mixed oak-pine forest habitats in the Kampinos Forest (central Poland). We investigated whether the regeneration rate depends on habitat type, whether there is a relationship between the bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) cover and the degree of community deformation, and which habitat type has been most invaded by alien plant species. Our results indicate that the constant loss of pine forest habitats, which has been observed since the 1970s, is continuing. The less deformed communities generally have more bilberry coverage, the stands in pine forest habitats are older and less deformed, and the stands in mixed oak-pine forest habitats are more susceptible to the spread of alien species, but are able to regenerate faster after a disturbance. These results are in line with observations from other parts of Poland and other European countries.

Opis:
Interpretation of the regional high-resolution seismic data of the PolandSPANTM survey in the Grudziądz-Polik area revealed a new depositional architecture of the Upper Cretaceous succession that differs substantially from the previously assumed layer-cake model, commonly applied to Permian-Mesozoic sequences. A previously unrecognized regional unconformity, dividing the Upper Cretaceous succession into two units characterized by very different internal geometries, was identified and mapped. The lower unit, with a generally layer-cake internal pattern, is overlain by an upper unit composed of a regionally low-angle succession that pinches out toward the south. This newly revealed regional pattern remained unrecognized in previous regional compilations based on borehole data, which suggested that a layer-cake depositional architecture prevailed throughout the entire Upper Cretaceous. This new image of Upper Cretaceous depositional patterns has far-reaching consequences for understanding of the evolution of the Polish Basin in the Late Cretaceous, including its subsidence and burial history, deposition, and tectonic development. A re-evaluation of the chronostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous of the Polish Basin is needed to temporally constrain the succession of sedimentary and tectonic events revealed here.

Opis:
The identification of depositional conditions and stratigraphical position of glacigenic deposits in the Napęków area is important for the genetic and stratigraphical interpretation of Quaternary deposits in the central part of the Holy Cross Mountains, as well as for a revision of the course and extent of Middle Polish (Saalian) glaciations. These deposits comprise a series of diamictons which occur between sandy-gravelly deposits. Based on results of macro- and microscopic sedimentological investigations, analysis of heavy mineral composition, roundness and frosting of quartz grains, as well as OSL dating, this complex must have formed during the Odranian Glaciation (Drenthe, Saalian, MIS 6). Sandy-gravelly deposits are of fluvioglacial and melt-out origin. Diamictons represent subglacial traction till. Their facies diversity is a result of variations in time and space, complex processes of deposition and deformation, responsible for their formation at the base of the active ice sheet. This glacigenic depositional complex was transformed by erosion-denudation and aeolian processes in a periglacial environment during the Vistulian (Weichselian, MIS 5d-2).

Oprócz miecza w skład wyposażenia wchodziły: grot włóczni, tok, umbo, fibula, nóż, pochewka, nity, gwoździe, pierścień, pęseta i inne – wszystko z żelaza. Miecz można zaklasyfikować do typu I/1 P. Łuczkiewicza, a trzpień do typu B. Pochwa należy do typu V Tomasza Bochnaka.
On a large cemetery at Mała Wieś near Sieradz, the Autor discovered in 1980 a rich furnished grave of warrior with Celtic sword. The grave received number 27, and after verification 508. Sword was preserved in iron scabbard with iron fittings on the sheath edge. The chape of the sword scabbard has button-like end. Total length 106 cm. The blade of the sword is lenticular in cross-section and his length have 84 cm and width 6–6.5 cm. Sword’s point in a form of a pointed arch. The handle was separated from the blade by a ogival crossguard. Except the sword the grave contained a iron shield boss, spear with tok (butt), fibula, knife with scabbard, rivets, ring, tweezers and others items. And moreover 660 fragments of hand made pottery. Long metal objects were oriented in the grave pit. Such a set of items indicates Celtic origin or close ties to the Celtic military milieu. The sword can be classified as type I/1 by P. Łuczkiewicz, grip as type B. Scabbard belongs to the type V by T. Bochnak. Such a set may be dated to a phase A2 or A2/A3 after T. Bochnak and L. Tyszler. The sword from Mała Wieś can be treated as another proof of the stay of the Celtic Boii in central Poland.

The paper presents an assessment of atmospheric drought during vegetation season defined on the basis of standardized precipitation index (SPI). The data used in this paper come from nine IMWM stations from central-eastern region of Poland, and they were registered in 1971–2005. The frequency of occurrence of vegetation season’s months was determined in particular drought classes. Spatial distribution of SPI index values was shown in all of the vegetation season’s months on the area examined. The direction and significance of values changes tendency of the analyzed index during the vegetation season were also defined. It was noticed that extreme droughts appeared four times less frequently than the normal months. Very dry months were noted most frequently in September while moderately dry – in August. The analysis of the frequency of spatial distribution of particular drought classes showed that extreme dry and very dry months occurred most frequently in western part of the area examined, while the moderately dry months also in south-eastern part. On the basis of the linear trend analysis it can be said that the SPI index values were slightly decreasing year by year.

The objective of the work was to evaluate the effect of hydrothermal conditions on oats yields produced in east-central Poland. Hydrothermal conditions were determined based on the Sielianinov’s hydrothermal coefficient for nine IMGW (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management) stations located in the study area. The second data set consisted of oats yields compiled and published by the Main Statistical Office. Average yields as well as minimum and maximum yields were analysed. The relationship between oats yields and hydrothermal conditions was examined using a step-wise linear regression model. Correlation coefficients were negative in April and positive in June at all the stations. The relationships were confirmed by an analysis of regression equations. The regression equations also included coefficients for May and June which, however, were not statistically significant. Yield variation, described by regression equations of the dependence of oats yield on Sielianinov’s hydrothermal coefficient value was accounted for from 19 (Siedlce, Biała Podlaska) to 50% (Ostrołeka).

The purpose of the work is to characterise pluvial conditions in central-eastern Poland from the beginning of the 21st century (2001-2020). The analysis involved seven meteorological stations of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB): Białowieża, Legionowo, Pułtusk, Siedlce, Szepietowo, Terespol and Warsaw. The work contains the analysis of the annual and seasonal atmospheric precipitation pattern (summer, winter, spring and autumn) and its temporal and spatial variation throughout a 20-year period. Moreover, the percentage share of precipitation in each season in the annual sum was calculated. In order to analyse precipitation patterns in the study period, the Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) was applied. The average long-term annual atmospheric precipitation sum ranged from 557 mm at Terespol to 653 mm at Białowieża. The highest seasonal precipitation sum in the studied region was recorded for the summer (218 mm) whereas in spring and autumn, precipitation stayed at a similar level and amounted to 130 and 131 mm, respectively. The lowest precipitation was recorded in winter (109 mm). The highest percentage share of the atmospheric precipitation sum was associated with summer rainfall (from 35 to 38%), whereas the lowest in winter (from 18 to 20%). Comparisons of 2001-2010 and 2011-2020 decades revealed a decline in the share of summer precipitation in the annual sum at most of the stations, and an increase in the share of winter precipitation. The ITA demonstrated that the most significant trends in precipitation change occurred in summer and winter and the directions of the trends were different for each station.

On the basis of examples of forms coming from central Poland and belonging to two derivational categories, personal names of action performers and names of manners of action, two processes have been presented namely lexicalization and the process of re-acquiring derivational divisibility by lexemes which were subjected to morphological and semantic changes. The break of motivational relations between a derivative and a root word happens i.a. due to the extinction of outdated archaic forms, which provided the basis for their creation, the functioning of words with presently unproductive formatives or the widening gap between the meaning of a root word and the meaning of a derivative. The phenomenon of gaining structural meaning by lexicalized words or words which are genetically simplex is caused i.a. by the inclination of personal names of action performers and names of manners of action towards verbal motivation as known from the history the Polish language.

Opis:
The subject of this analysis is the phenomenon of word-forming synonymy of temporal adjectives occurring in Central Poland dialects. The author presents types of derivatives coming into close or equal relation with their equivalents created from the same base with the help of other affixes on the examples of derivatives from all parts of Poland: letni - latowy, wiosenny - wiosnowy, tagroczny - tagroczni, ranny - rańszy, południowy - południejszy, teraźniejszy - terajszy etc. The causes of occurrence of series of synonymic adjectives in presented dialects were stressed. They were explained by the slower rate of changes in dialects than in literary Polish language and also by the influence of nationwide Polish.

Opis:
The paper presents socio-ecological and ecological characterisation of 72 bryophyte species found in the years 2008-2012 on midforest roads passing through nine nature reserves situated in the Łódź region. Nine species occurred excl usively in this habitat. Most of the species noted (63%) were forest bryophytes occurring also inside the forest phytocoenoses studied, they constituted 95.5% of all the records. The non-forest species show diff erent socio-ecological relations: some of them occur typically on meadows or in grassy forest ecotones, others – in fens or bogs but there are also some pioneer bryophytes colonizing initial sites, both of natural and anthropogenic character. They diff er from the forest species occurring on midforest roads in their ecological demands regarding the habitat reaction (presence of subneutral species) and light (higher participation of heliophytes). Nine of them (13%) are considered to be synanthropic bryophytes. Details of the species occurrence are provided.

Opis:
Omawiany grot włóczni reprezentuje typ IV w klasyfikacji A. Nadolskiego (1954). Obejmuje on okazy średnich rozmiarów (nieprzekraczających 30 cm długości, często krótszych – poniżej 20 cm), krępe, o stosunkowo długiej tulei.
In November 2020, an early medieval spearhead was donated to the Museum in Piotrków Trybunalski by an inhabitant of the village of Lubień, Piotrków Trybunalski County. The artefact was discovered on a forest trackway (Fig. 1), 900 m to the north-east from the center of the early medieval cemetery at Lubień. The relic was located close to the ground surface. Its localization in this place is probably connected with earthworks from 1970, during which the central part of the Lubień necropolis was discovered and partially destroyed (Fig. 2). Approximately 35% of the cemetery area was destroyed, which, according to a spatial-chronological analysis, is connected with the initial phase of the whole burial complex (1st quarter of the 11th century). The iron spearhead has a lanceolate leaf, flat-oblong in cross section; it preserved in poor condition (Fig. 3). The rib is slightly marked and only visible on one side of the leaf, which may be due to corrosion, as is the case with the edge loss. The hexagonal spearhead sleeve, although not a clearly defined attribute uniformly tapers upward and was joined “overlapping”. Its edge is partially destroyed. No rivet holes were registered. The discussed spearhead represents type IV in the classification by A. Nadolski (1954). This type includes medium-sized specimens (not exceeding 30 cm in length, often shorter than 20 cm), spiny, with a relatively long sleeve. The lower edges of the heart-shaped leaf are blunted on a short section. The spearheads of this type were probably used in combat against an opponent without body armour They showed little penetrating power, compensated by a considerable striking surface. In the identification of type IV spearheads the ratio of the maximum width of the leaf to its length can be used, which should not be greater than 1:2. Type IV spearheads are infrequently in Poland (30 pcs.). Specimens of this form are known mainly from cemeteries, mainly used in the 11th century, possibly even from the beginning of the 12th century. They are concentrated mainly in Masovia, especially in its northern part (Fig. 4). A small group forms four specimens from Greater Poland, while in the remaining area there are only single finds (Kuyavia, central Poland, Lesser Poland). Type IV spearheads are also sporadically found outside of Poland. There are examples from the 11th century (less frequently also from the 11th–12th century) from medieval Ruthenia and the eastern part of the Baltic Sea Basin. They were slightly more numerous in northern Germany, especially in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein. Assuming that the spearhead came from one of the graves destroyed in 1970, we can talk about another step towards the recovery of materials lost at that time. This gives hope for further discoveries, which will be possible thanks to the planned prospecting of the cemetery area.

Opis:
Zones of Cl anomalies in Mesozoic and Cenozoic aquifers, defined as groups of wells with concentration of the chloride ion in groundwater exceeding 60 mg/dm3, were mapped on the basis of 12 000 archival chemical analyses. These zones are predominantly developed in tectonic conditions enabling the inflow of Mesozoic salt waters into useful aquifers: 1) fault zones, 2) hydrogeological windows above salt anticlines and elevated tectonic blocks, and 3) salt diapirs. As a result, significant decline in groundwater quality has been reported from many intakes due to the elevated concentration of chlorides, sodium and the amonium ion.
