Opis:
Currently, a worldwide dynamic rise of interest in using soil as a construction material can be observed. This trend is evident in the rapid rise of the amount of standards that deal with soil techniques. In 2012 the number of standards was larger by one third than five years prior. To create a full standardization of the rammed earth technique it is necessary to take into account the diversity of used soil and stabilizing additives. The proportion of the components, the process of element production and the research methods must also be made uniform. The article describes the results of research on the compressive strength of rammed earth samples that differed from each other with regards to the type of loam used for the mixture and the amount of the stabilizer. The stabilizer used was Portland cement CEM I 42.5R. The research and the analysis of the results were based on foreign publications, the New Zealand standard NZS 4298:1998, the American Standard NMAC14.7.4 and archival Polish Standards from the 1960’s that dealt with earth material.

Opis:
Numerous solutions are used in the site to treat pollution, including remediation of heavy metals and hazardous wastes by solidification/stabilization (S/S) with cement as a binder. S/S is one of the most commonly methods used for treating inorganic wastes. The objective of this research was using unconfined compressive strength test, and EPA Toxicity Leaching Procedure TCLP method 1313, to test the effectiveness performance, and efficiency of the solidification/stabilization method for treatment of some heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr) contaminated sands using ordinary locally produced Portland Cement type A. In this study, three loads of pollution in three mix designs by contaminated sands were used. As a result of the unconfined compression test, it was observed that the value 1–15 MPa with OPC cement content 25% in the solidification/stabilization process was good enough to comply with the limited value set by the (US EPA). In addition, the concentration of zinc ions was 500 kg/mg, 1500 kg/mg, and 3000 kg/mg, which caused an increase in compressive strength in the early period of age, and a decrease at a later age. An increase in the iron ion concentration caused an increase in the compressive strength at a later age, the effective retention percentages were (97, 93.5, 96 and 92) for iron, zinc, manganese and chromium ions, respectively, which exceeded 3000 mg/kg initially. The high effectiveness in holding and retaining metals within the matrix of solidification/stabilization at the particle size above 9.5 mm was found as well. The samples (Mn and Cr) with the low amount of cement in the mix treatment were not able to retain the required TCLP regulatory limits value, and the initial extraction pH 4.9. However, the final pH 9.5 is alkanet and stabilization effects of the cement matrix.

Opis:
The stabilization/solidification process (S/S) is one of the alternative methods of treating B3 waste, especially heavy metal. The S/S uses cement as the solidification agent. The cement will bind heavy metal pollutants in a monolithic mass with a sturdy structure, thus inhibiting its movement. The presence of hydrocarbons affects the S/S strength. Therefore, it is necessary to add pozzolan material which can absorb hydrocarbon constituting the cement blocking component of pozzolan cement, i.e. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) combined with trass soil. This study aims to determine the maximum content of organic materials in the form of hydrocarbons can stabilize/solidify heavy metals contained in wastes containing hydrocarbons. This research is conducted in two steps. Stage I aims to obtain the optimum composition of the mixture. On the other hand, stage II is to determine the maximum content of hydrocarbons in percent weight that can stabilize/solidify organic wastes containing heavy metals – Cu, Cr, and Pb in artificial wastes. The composition of OPC and trass soil was varied at a ratio of 100: 0, 5:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0: 100. The hydrocarbons used in step II were paraffin, added to the optimum composition of OPC and trass soil with a proportion of 2.5%, 5%, 5% and 10%. The S/S product quality test was performed, involving: compressive strength test, Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and paint filter test. Strength test was conducted using a compressive strength testing apparatus Toasters Universal Testing Machine Type RAT-200, MFG No. 20380 CAP 200 tf. TCLP test under US-EPA (method 1311). The method of analysis pertaining to heavy metal concentrations involved a colorimetric method for Cr (VI), neocuproine for Cu, and dithizone for Pb. The paint test refers to the US EPA 9095B method. The results showed that the optimum composition of OPC mixture: trass soil was 50:50, which is the composition used in stage II. The results of compressive strength test were 2770 tons/m2. The TCLP test results for heavy metals Cu and Pb with hydrocarbon addition on Cu 10% and Pb 2.5% reached 0.076 and 0.076 mg/L, respectively. The result of the paint filter test indicates that there is no remaining free fluid.

Opis:
In this research project, the measurements of the ultrasonic P- and S-waves and seismic cone penetration testing (CPT) were applied to identify subsurface conditions and properties of clayey soil stabilized with lime/cement columns in the Stockholm Norvik Port, Sweden. Applied geophysical methods enabled to identify a connection between the resistance of soil and strength in the stabilized columns. The records of the seismic tests were obtained in the laboratory of Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) through estimated P- and S-wave velocities using techniques of resonance frequency measurement of the stabilized specimens. The CPT profiles were used to evaluate the quality of the lime/cement columns of the reinforced soil by the interpretation of signals. The relationship between the P- and S-waves demonstrated a gain in strength during soil hardening. The quality of soil was evaluated by seismic measurements with aim to achieve sufficient strength of foundations prior to the construction of the infrastructure objects and industrial works. Seismic CPT is an effective method essential to evaluate the correct placement of the CPT inside the column. This work demonstrated the alternative seismic methods supporting the up-hole technology of drilling techniques for practical purpose in civil engineering and geotechnical works.

The development of an ecofriendly binder containing high volume of cement replacement by incorporating two waste materials for the use in soil stabilization. This paper investigates the possibility of replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by two waste and by-product materials for the use of a silty clay soil stabilization purpose. The soil was treated by 9.0% OPC where this mixture was used as a reference for all tests. Two by-product materials: ground granulated blast furnace slag and cement kiln dust were used as replacement materials. Consistency limits, compaction and unconfined compression strength (UCS) tests were conducted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was carried out for the proposed binder to investigate the reaction of products over curing time. Seven curing periods were adopted for all mixtures; 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 52, and 90 days. The results showed that the strength development over curing periods after cement replacement up to 45–60% was closed to those of the reference specimens. The microphotographs of SEM analysis showed that the formation of Ettringite and Portladite as well as to calcium silicate hydrate gel was obvious at curing periods longer than 7 days reflected that the replacing materials succeed to produce the main products necessary for binder formation.

W pracy przedstawiono przegląd badań dotyczących możliwości wykorzystania pyłów z pieców cementowych i wapienniczych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem stabilizacji i higienizacji osadów ściekowych.
Cement kiln dust (CKD) and lime kiln dust are a wastes of cement and lime manufacturing. After collection in precipitators behind the kilns, the dusts are dumped on a waste heap. The disposal is not an environmentally favorable situation. The obvious use of those dusts are they re-incorporation in the production cycle. Sometimes this way is impossible to application for contaminated dusts. CKD and lime kiln dusts characterize high content of free lime. For this reason dusts could be use in environment to neutralization of acidic sludges or wastes, soil stabilization, fertilization or sewage sludge treatment. Research to overcome cement and lime dusts development is being carried out in different countries to find appropriate ways of using those wastes in various applications. This work presents a research review on CKD and lime kiln dust in various applications, esspecially in sewage sludge stabilization and higienization.

Opis:
There are over 1000 electroplating workshops functioning in Poland; they are agglomerated in automotive industry, agricultural and construction machines industry, precision instruments industry, electronics, electrotechnics, etc.. . The chemical composition of wastes from galvanizing plants strictly depends on the technological processes as well as the methods of neutralization of industrial wastewaters. The wastes mentioned can be neutralized, among other possibilities, using cement, fly ashes or lime. The material that gains the widest applicability for treating a wide spectrum of hazardous wastes is Portland cement. Using cement enables an improvement of the physical (solidifying) and chemical characteristics of various kinds of wastes, that ensures a decrease in the mobility of contaminants (stabilization). The process using Portland cement (CEM I 32,5 R) was used towards galvanic sludges. The results presented in this article allow for the assesment of the applicability of mixture of cement with mortar sand, as well as the mixture of cement and flotation tailings for the stabilizing and solidifying galvanic sludge, containing mainly Cr, Cu, Zn and Ni. The presented study was also concentrated on the limitation in the transport of leached contaminants to the environment, the reduction of the solubility of hazardous contaminants, as well as a change in the physical structure of the waste - in other words, derivation of the product that could be mechanically durable during transport and storage.

Opis:
Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the course and efficiency of immobilizing heavy metal (Cr, Cu, Zn and Ni) ions during stabilization/solidification of electroplating wastewater sludge with chemically active mixtures prepared on the basis of Portland cement. The efficiency of the stabilization/solidification process was established by testing the mechanical strength of the solidified product in a uniaxial compression apparatus, as well as by chemical analyses of the extracts from the TCLP (U.S. EPA) test and the PN-EN 12457-4:2006 Standard test. The sludge came from a wastewater treatment plant receiving effluents from a Lower-Silesian electroplating plant which specializes in the following processes: bethanizing, electrotinning, nickelizing, copperizing and passivation with trivalent blue chromium. Water content in the sludge averaged 66.3%. Maturation of the solidified mixtures was carried out at 7 oC or 20 oC for 28 days. At the temperature of 7 oC it was necessary either to extend the time of maturation or to increase the proportion of cement in the solidifying mixture. It was found that in some instances the heavy metal ions in the sludge had been incorporated into the structure of the products obtained from the hydration of cement. Under unfavorable weather conditions the waste generated during solidification conducted via the route proposed can be safely disposed of after additional encapsulation, e.g. with bitumen or polyethylene.

Opis:
The treatment of expansive soil is generally the most effective process for the stabilization of swelling clay. In this work, we will investigate the influence of the treatment of an expansive soil using granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) alone and granulated blast furnace slag activated by cement (GGBS/C) by mechanical, physical and chemical tests. The results obtained show an increased pH, an improved plasticity as well as a significant reduction in swelling potential and swelling pressure following a percentage increase in additives. In addition, a change in the adsorption of methylene blue molecules (VBs) and in the microstructure of the expansive soil is observed after treatment. Utilization of both GGBS alone and GGBS activated by cement has a significant effect on the behavior of the swelling clay but the GGBS activated by cement exhibits superior results. The use of GGBS in the stabilization of soil will have both economic and environmental benefits.

Soil stabilization techniques are widely used for road construction to improve the properties of the subgrade materials. Using new additives and stabilizers to improve soil properties can reduce the costs of construction and reduce the possible negative effects of these materials on the environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a liquid based nano-material called EarthZyme (EZ) and cement kiln dust (CKD) as admixtures to improve the soil properties. A mixture of two soils was used in this study which were prepared from mixing sand soil and fine-grained soil. Compaction tests were performed on the soil that was stabilized with the CKD to determine the density-water content relationships. Unconfined compression tests were also conducted on specimens without treatment, specimen treated with the CKD only, and specimens treated with the CKD and the EZ after curing period for seven days. The obtained results indicated that adding the CKD to the soil decreased the values of the unconfined compression strength (UCS) from 5 to 15 percent. However, adding the CKD reduced the maximum dry density (MDD) from 10 to 12 %. As discussed herein, soil stabilization with the EZ had insignificant effects on the results obtained from the unconfined compression test.
