The essay formulates four criteria for identifying the topos "signs of the times" and applies them for a specific Christian understanding of the ecological crisis. The aim of the argumentation is to decide why and in what way climate change, ecological degradation but also the new awareness of the value of nature is a theological issue. The second part of the essay deals with the question which competence the churches can contribute to the ecological discourse of a pluralistic, partly secular or atheistic society. I speak also about the encyclical Laudato si’.

Opis:
The goal of this article is recollection of traditional forms of penance often called; Three Good Deeds: fasting, almsgiving and prayer. Looking at the main object of these reflections from the point of view of social moral theology allows one to see how influential are these three good deeds on one’s life, in the fulfillment of oneself, in the relationship with God as well as in the relationship with others. Apart from the above and through the use of Biblical tradition, teaching of the Fathers and the rich teaching of the Church, it also reflects on their source of vitality from antiquity to modern times. The final part of the research focuses on threats in practicing these three good deeds, which includes: secularism, lost sense of sin, consumerism, and permissivism. It is worth mentioning that this refection gains an additional value during this “year of faith,” especially if interpreted in the context of living faith. Often due to the lack of faith fasting, almsgiving and prayer are forgotten and misunderstood.

There are many perspectives from which we can study the media. This paper does so with an eye on Catholic Social Teaching (CST) reflections, stressing that information and communication technologies (ICTs) are instruments for human flourishing, not goals in themselves. Moreover, we assert that CST’s scope is not to indicate which instruments people should use for social development, but rather to observe the culture we create when using ICTs; a culture that should respect the personal freedom and responsibility of each individual acting in society. While a vast number of published works often regard descriptive literature, we here focus mostly on authors looking at the conceptual power of social changes when making use of ICTs. The last group of authors usually refer to three fields of studies: economy, politics and technology. After considering their descriptions of ICT’s social impact in these fields, and striving to understand not only the instruments but also the theories behind them, we offer a final proposal. A proposal that regards the task that CST could have when studying ICTs: to stress that human motivations appear before technological developments, and that human work is the best macro approach for developing humanity.

The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World “Gaudium et Spes” says, “for man is the source, the center, and the purpose of all economic and social life” (63). Therefore, the man’s dignity has to be considered integrally in both his spiritual and bodily constitution and emphasized alongside his value and supernatural vocation. This enables attributing a special role to his transcendence in economic life. In their own productive activity, the possession and exchange of goods, a man should adhere to proper moral norms. However, what is observed is the incessant deepening of social inequalities in different parts of the earthly globe. Luxury accompanied by the wasting of goods adjoins indigence of people suffering a shortage of necessities. Thus it seems vital that economic institutions be established whose goal will be promoting good living conditions and an individual’s engagement in dignified economic activity and which will not destroy their human, moral and social dimension.

Opis:
The Catholic Church’s Social Teaching dealing with mankind is interested in the person and their way of progressing in the world. As John Paul II stated, Catholic Social Teaching “belongs [...] to the field [...] of theology, particularly moral theology” (SRS 41; CA 55). Polish moralists in the area of social moral theological studies undertake the issue of economic-social life, and in particular its anthropological dimension. Moral reflections from the theological point of view allow for an integral grasping of the involvement of the person in the life of society. The goal of the presented report is to show an integral concept of the person as the fundamental dimension of social-economic life. The principle source of this work is comprised of views presented on the given topic by the nation’s moralists during over a dozen lately held yearly meetings of the Section of Polish Moral Theologians. The contents of the report are divided into three parts: (1) the integrated vision of the person as the principle element of evaluating the social-economic order; (2) threats to the human person in the context of contemporary social-political life and (3) pointing to ways of overcoming these threats.

Opis:
In dominating narratives, economics has been portrayed as hard science, based on complex mathematical equations and rigid statistical models. It seems to be overlooked that it belongs to the domain of social sciences and that its roots stem from philosophy and ethics. After all, many classical economists were either ethicists (A. Smith) or clergymen (T. Bayes). Today’s managers also seem to be motivated mainly by the desire to increase their company’s profits. However, if managers wish to become both effective and respected leaders for their teams, they should build their power on ethical principles deeply rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. The purpose of the present paper is to attract attention to the relation of economics, management and religion. Behavioral economics and management come to our aid here by emphasizing that, when making decisions related not only to financial markets but also to managerial tasks, what matters is not only factors that are strictly financial, but also those are related to psychology or ethics. Using the example of ethical investing and faith-based funds or stock indexes the Authors show that Christian values and the social teaching of the Catholic Church are still important to some participants in the financial markets.

The role of Catholic social teaching has been attributed to the promotion of moral values and principles that should be considered when establishing or evaluating a given social, economic, or political system. This also applies to smaller structures, specific institutions, concepts, and practical social solutions, which may include social entrepreneurship. The article aims to confirm the hypothesis that, taking into account the principles of Catholic social teaching in the process of discovering the axionormative determinants of social entrepreneurship allows its deeper understanding and more effective implementation of its praxeological goals. At the beginning of the paper, the author emphasises the common source of all general and specific axionormative criteria of the two analysed disciplines – the dignity of a human person. Further deliberations revolve around other values and principles, such as the value of human work and entrepreneurship, the common good, the universal destination of goods, the preferential option for the poor, solidarity, subsidiarity, and participation.

Research interests of the author focus, among others, on accounting and Catholic social teaching (CST). This paper is motivated by the wish to launch research into these areas by raising the question featuring in the title about the feasibility of interdisciplinary studies covering the above-mentioned fields of research, i.e., accounting and Catholic social teaching. The paper makes an attempt to answer the question, however, whether it needs to be stressed that it just delineates a context for a wider and in-depth discussion that can be continued. Looking at conclusions reached by the author we may agree that it is possible to make references to Catholic social teaching when expanding the body of research knowledge in accounting. The aforesaid can be substantiated by the following arguments. First, CST can be viewed not only as the Catholic Church's doctrine but also as a reflection of research activity. Second, today there is a number of research works that discuss interdisciplinary studies on CST and social sciences, including economics and law. Third, accounting is a social science but at the same time it is an applied science focused, among others, on seeking solutions that would assist humanity and, above all, economic entities in accomplishing goals and meeting requirements set forth for them, which the mankind delivers not just in the economic context but also in the context of the system of values approved and exercised by societies. Fourth, in the literature there are writings that touch upon accounting and its links with ethics, culture, and religion (e.g., studies on accounting and Islam). In view of the above, seeking solutions in accounting (e.g. in reporting) that would meet requirements posed by CST is not in contradiction with to-date threads in research considerations and studies.

Social enterprises perceive social and environmental issues as primary objectives of their hybrid socio-economic activities. They believe that financial stability is a prerequisite, not a goal. This approach is similar to Catholic social teaching (CST). The detailed content of the social encyclicals is a valuable means of deeper exploration and enrichment of the moral dimension of social enterprise management. The following article analyses social entrepreneurship from the point of view of the fundamental principles of CST and theological premises. The reference to the management of a social enterprise of the supreme personalistic standard and principles such as the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity allows the moral dimension of this process to be understood more deeply. The paper was created based on a method appropriate to research focused on moral theology and CST. First, the content of selected literature on the subject (social entrepreneurship) and carefully selected theological-moral sources (especially papal documents and publications by CST researchers) were analysed. Subsequently, the results of the analysis were subjected to inference and conceptual work in relation to the adopted general research objective and specific research tasks: the phenomenon of social enterprises was described; the specific features and limitations of the social enterprise management process were identified; the fundamental principles of Catholic social teaching as normative criteria for social enterprise management were reviewed; the possibility of applying the aforementioned CST principles to social enterprise practice was discussed and presented, and the final conclusions were formulated.

The author of the present paper aims to justify the thesis that religion is a valuable source of inspiration in man’s economic activities. It confirms the unique value and moral solidarity of people as spiritual beings and their unstoppable progress to achieve the common ultimate goal: the absolute. Inspired by religion, Christian business ethics offer a system of pragmatic and deeply humanistic principles like personalism, solidarity, subsidiarity, participation, organic concept of cooperation in economic activities and common welfare. The offer is directed to the world of business and, for the sake of the common good, it ought to be accepted.

Opis:
Economic growth, excessive consumption and the consequent growing exploitation of natural resources pose the risk of a global ecological disaster. Therefore, it is vital to create a new consumer awareness concerned about the natural environment. This paper describes the issue of sustainable consumption in the context of sustainable development. It has been assumed that the increasing popularity of ecological awareness, plays the key role in the implementation of the objectives of sustainable consumption and sustainable development. The aim of this paper is to explain mechanisms responsible for the increasing role of consumption in the modern world and to draw attention to the need to raise the ecological awareness of consumers. The paper uses the analytic-synthetic method.
Wzrost gospodarczy, nadmierna konsumpcja, a w konsekwencji rosnąca eksploatacja zasobów naturalnych, stwarzają ryzyko globalnej katastrofy ekologicznej.

This article is an intellectual attempt to deal with the consequences of the multifaceted crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It is based on the principles of Catholic doctrine. First, an attempt is made to answer the question about the theological significance of the crisis itself: can it be understood in the key of “God’s punishment”, as it is often done in statements and publications referring to the Catholic point of view? Then, the spiritual consequences of the crisis are presented, first of all the impact of isolation on interpersonal relationships and the potential effects  it may have on a people’s ability to be open to transcendence. Finally, on the base of the Catholic social teaching, postulates are formulated regarding the necessary modifications in the lifestyle and principles of the global economy, so that the drama of the pandemic may become an opportunity for greater humanization and a step on  the way to conversion of human society

The article presents the development of the social teaching of the Church from Rerum novarum onwards from the view of responsiveness or non- responsiveness to the social changes and regarding the development of the teaching from ideological confrontation with modern ideologies to the last encyclicals which put emphasis on the civilization of love and charity as a specific social paradigm without the ambition that the Church would be in power. In any case, in all periods, the social teaching with its basic principles has influenced the development of the European culture and its legal order. The shift of focus from the alternative to the existent social systems to the ethical role of the social teaching of the Church has strengthened the endeavours to establish religious freedom as a basic human right. And at the same time, the clear differentiation between the mission of religious and political institutions and the central role of a citizen and believer in a democratic and pluralist society.

A Christian worldview entreats humans to live in ethical relationship with the natural world; our current ecological crisis makes that call of crucial and immediate importance. If humans, and Christians in particular, are to adequately participate in care for creation, then we must proceed with both ecological and theological knowledge about the natural world. In both scientific and theological analyses, we uncover not only creative processes of growth, but elements of chaos and destruction. The carbon cycle, food webs, and evolution are examples of where the earth’s survival depends upon destructive processes. In parallel fashion, God’s activity in Scripture also entails chaos and destructive activity, such as the flood in Genesis, the wisdom of the Book of Job, and Paul’s reflection on creation in Romans. This article argues that humans, called to be co-creators with God, thus need to integrate destructive activity into our framework of what it means to “co-create,” thereby participation in creation in a more holistic manner. Far from unleashing unrestricted destruction on the world, such a framework offers ethical guidelines for destroying and creating in ways that support the overall flourishing of the natural world. -------------- Received: 12/04/2020.
