Opis:
Unemployment and emigration were the most important and urgent concerns which beset Poland shortly after its rebirth in 1918. The Catholic Church took action in both of these fields, inspired by the teachings of Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI concerning the so-called “social issue.” These inspirations were aptly interpreted and practically implemented by Antoni Julian Nowowiejski, bishop of Płock, known today as a social activist and reformer. This text analyses the specific activities of the Płock clergy in the interwar period, which were supposed to counteract the negative social consequences of the issues mentioned above.

Christian parties, which emerged as organized parliamentary powers in the second half of the 20th century, have a long history and initial phase, which is presented in this paper. The period of their historical, progressive development was a breakthrough, and a transition from the pre-revolutionary era to the post-revolutionary world, characterized by the liberalization of a strong state, industrialization and the emergence of social problems, new ideologies and processes of secularization. The development of Christian-democratic parties in Poland took place with almost two decades of delay in relation to the flwering of Christian democratic parties in Western Europe. The fist Christian democratic parties appeared in Poland only in the interwar period. During this period, the weakest point of Polish Christian democrats was the small share of intelligence in its ranks and lack of support from the Catholic Church. In the early 1990s, numerous Christian democratic groups began to appear on the Polish political scene, but none of them retained their positions for longer. First of all, it was characterized by a huge gap, almost arbitrary programme, which often had more to do with conservative ideology than with Christian-democratic one.

Opis:
The Catholic Church is naturally associated with migrants and its history and doctrine are inextricably linked with the migration of people. Many of the documents of the Catholic Church refer to the history of human migration. The responsibility of the Catholic Church for migrants has deep historical and theological roots. The Catholic Church sees both the positive and the negative sides of this phenomenon The pastoral care of migrants is a response to the needs of these people. It does not replace the territorial structures. They both work closely together and complement each other. The primary objective of the pastoral care of migrants is to enable migrants to integrate with the local community. An important element of these structures are religious orders of men and women. The most important thing for migrants is the Christian attitude of the local community to them. Church repeatedly stressed the importance of hospitality to migrants. Both human and Christian attitude towards migrants expresses itself in a good reception, which is the main factor in overcoming the inevitable difficulties, preventing opposites and solving various problems. This attitude helps to alleviate the problems associated with the process of social integration.

In order to achieve this research plans first determined what are the defining trends of the Church in the science of politics. Then they proposed typology of forms of influence of the Church on the political system. Then presented reported in the parliament draft legislation on partnerships and analyzed the arguments and forms of influence of the Church in the process of regulation of the above regulations. Through the concept of the Church is to be understood "the hierarchical Church" rather than the community of the faithful.

Opis:
The article investigates the persecution of the Catholic Church in the times of Stalinism, when the political power in Poland was largely centralized in the hands of the Communists of Jewish origin, who were sent by Joseph Stalin from Moscow in order to sovietize Poland. The Catholic Church, which had been defending the sovereignty of Poland for centuries, was treated by Com-munists as a greatest enemy of their objectives. The article shows the ruthlessness of the Com-munist regime, whose goal was to weaken the role of the Roman Catholic Church, and to liqui-date its leading institutions, such as the Catholic University of Lublin. It concisely presents main assumptions of the “anticlerical action” which was authorized by Hilary Minc and Jakub Ber-man. The paper contains legal reviews which indicate the illegal behavior of security officers in relation to Catholics, in particular to those of juvenile age. It argues that, with fighting against the Catholicism in Poland, the Communists infringed the law established by themselves. The article is a result of the many months inquiry in several archive institutes in Poland.

The Catholic Church is a strong player in Africa, especially due to its social, medical, educational care and charity giving to African people. Diplomacy of the Holy See is also very concerned with African problems at an international forum. First of all the cause of this involvement is the increasing community of the Catholic faithful in Africa. The paper deals with a few aspects of Catholic commitment for the better future of this marginalized continent and tries to answer the question if the Catholic Church/the Holy See is the real power in Africa. However, there is not explicit answer because of special nature of this entity.

Opis:
In the political system of the Polish People's Republic, the Catholic Church and the Polish United Workers' Party competed with each other for influence in society. There was virtually no convergence between the doctrine and teaching of the Catholic Church and the ideology of the ruling PZPR. The church was the only institution in the Polish People's Republic which, even through pastoral teaching, publishing the titles of Catholic press and publishing openly and legally in the country, violated the monopoly of communist power introduced after 1945 for the transmission of information and ideology directed to society. The scope of duties and activity of the institution of preventive censorship - GUKPP and W and its delegations were properly officially on the side of the authorities in the current of this rivalry. It was in her hands to have the power to control church publishing houses, the press, and finally materials sent from abroad, to which the recipients were, e.g. curia. Censorship was intended to limit the message of the Church, where it was uncomfortable for power, to reduce the influence of the Church in society, the authority of its hierarchs, and finally, if possible, literally "cross" the traditional presence of the Church, customs and values of the Catholic religion from various spheres of social life. These activities were carried out both at the central level in Warsaw and at the level of voivodship field delegations. Due to the well-preserved materials of Gdańsk censorship, it is worth looking at her work in this area on the example of the activities of the Provincial Office for the Control of Press, Publications and Performances in the years of Gomułka's Little Stabilization 1956–1970. The article is a development and addition to two previous articles published in the "Religious Review".

Religious policy
Opis:
Religious policy during the Maoist period could be divided into the long-term policy, the aim of which is the decline of religion, and the short-term policy which is valid till the disappearance of religion. According to the Marxist theory, religion stems from the class struggle and is a tool for using masses, weakening their revolutionary enthusiasm, and a product of class society and social inequality. The oppressed people saw in religion the only hope for better life after death. The Chinese communists were of the opinion that after reaching the ideal of classless society, without exploiters and the oppressed, religion should naturally disappear because there will not be any demand for its compensation function. Till the moment of reaching this ideal, the short-term policy the aim of which is taking control over religion and using it for building the new China, shall still be effective. The pursuit of localizing religion, grounding the religious issues on socalled three autonomies, linking religion with patriotism and anti-imperialism as well as establishing state institutions controlling the religious practices, define the short-term religious policy of the Maoist period. This period is characterized both by the liberal and repressive approach (repressive especially during the Cultural Revolution) towards religion. It was the Deng Xiaoping's rule when the liberalization of the immediate religious policy together with maintaining its theoretical basis and long-term goals was initiated.

He dedicates his considerations (1) to show how the Catholic Church defends the indissolubility of marriage, (2) to discuss the prob-lem of these divorced Catholics whose sacramental marriage has not been de-clared invalid by the Church court, (3) to analyze the legal and pastoral situation of these spouses who left their sacramental marriages for living in non-sacramental ones.

Bishop Edward Samsel’s relations with the Church of the East were a major part of his pastoral ministry. As a patriot, he felt the obligation to help the Poles which remained within the borders of the Soviet Union, and suffered the torment of the local life. If possible, he tried to involve himself in the rebirth of religion in Belarus. Most contacts Bp E. Samsel had with the Grodno Diocese which was founded in 1991. The author analyzes the pastoral and material assistance, which was provided by Bp Samsel to resurgent church communities in Belarus, as well as his care for priests and seminarists.

The increase in migration at the international level also increases the number of religiously mixed marriages. The Catholic Church advises against entering into such marriages because this issue refers to the laws of God and the question of preserving faith. The Catholic Church approves of mixed marriages in terms of nationality or race because belonging to the Church is primarily determined by faith in Jesus Christ and baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity. Independently of canon law, progressive social secularization is noticeable on that subject matter.

The paper presents the issue of the sanctity and the history of the procedures worked out by the Roman Catholic Church of the canonization. Canonization is the act by which a particular Christian church declares a dead person to be a saint and is included in the canon. Originally, individuals were recognized as saints without any formal process. Canonization, whether formal or informal, does not make someone a saint: it is only a declaration that the person is a saint and was a saint even before canonization.

The inspiration to pursue a research topic or to contribute to the research of other scientists often comes from a single remark, thought or sentence. ‘Continuations’ in the heading suggests that this, too, is the case of this paper. It presents early results of a research project undertaken in 2017 to examine the religiousness of high school and academic youth inhabiting different social environments and coming from different regions of Poland (the Silesian, St Cross and Lesser Poland voivodeships). Research of this kind is undertaken relatively often, and usually focuses on similar topics; was it thus necessary to add yet another new project? The inspiration behind it comes from the findings of Fr. Janusz Mariański, an expert on the religiousness of Poles, which he described in numerous publications and in particular in the latest one: Religious activity of Poles in regression, a paper which forms part of the Anniversary Publication of Prof. Andrzej Wójtowicz. In the paper, J. Mariański summarises the results of multiannual sociological research of the topic. His central thesis points to a slow but consistent diminishing – regression – of Poles’ religious activity in the past decade. Whilst it is still possible to talk about a specific uniqueness of Polish religiosity, it does not mean that it will remain so unique in the future.

Catholic Church
Opis:
Various aspects of the term Catholic Church can be considered: theological, sociological, legal or politological. For the purpose of this article the defi nition of the Church as formulated by political science will be essential, although in this discipline various connotations exist. The Church is referred to as a denomination, religious community, an interest group or a political entity. Among authors writing about the Church as a denomination are Wolfgang Ernst Böckenförde and Heindrun Abromeit. Both of them focus on the spiritual-religious aspect of Church activities, at the same time emphasizing that political activity is not the principal aim of the Church. Broader theories of Church activities as an interest group are presented by Carolyn M. Warner and Dietrich Hierlemann. Classifying the Catholic Church as an interest group C.M. Warner claims that this institution makes eff orts to get preferential treatment by political authorities, and its goal is to gain certain resources from the economic and political systems. The Church attempts to lobby democratic governments through political parties and other means, as it intends to have an infl uence on the educational system, impose its moral values on society through legislation, or retain certain tax reliefs. The Church tries to provide its members with certain collective goods (such as answers to moral and philosophical dilemmas), affiliation-based (e.g. cult site), or individual incentives (e.g. sacraments). The Catholic Church, therefore, in addition to an organized religion, can be referred to as an untypical interest group D. Hierlemann similarly states that the Church acts as a representative of interests and a lobbyist that attempts to make infl uential contacts, establish good relations with decision makers and play for resources. The Church acting in the secular sphere is subject to the same priciples as other associations (Verbände). This entity tries to promote its interests in the political process. In reference to theories describing the functioning of associations in the lay-political area we can examine the activities of the Church within the political system. From this perspective D. Hierlemann analyzes various forms of lobbying done by the Catholic Church in Poland.
