Opis:
While at first glance the difference between fruit and vegetables appears to be clear, there are some problematic cases. One of them is the tomato, which is commonly regarded as a vegetable, although – technically speaking – it is a fruit. The aim of the present paper is to explain the controversies concerning the classification of tomatoes and other similar examples. In particular, the prototype-based approach to categorisation appears to offer a better chance of revealing the mechanisms that stand behind the issue of categorisation, than the classical approach.

Opis:
Creating false memories with words is a research procedure mainly used in psychology. It is based on a high correlation between the probability of remembering-knowing a critical word (the memories of the fact of learning it) and the likelihood of providing this word as an association with a list of words. An unrepresented critical word appears as a memory because it is associated with thewords presented to the participants of the study. The falsehood of the memory lies in the fact that the probability of providing a false word, i.e. a critical word, is as strong as the possibility of giving a listed word, whereas the respondents report that they remember the very moment of remembering a critical word. The aim of this article is to present the results of research on causing false memories and their effects carried out on the group of people with motor aphasia and the control group of those without this type of disorder. The study was conducted using the modified DRM procedure on the group of people with motor aphasia (N = 46) and the control group (N = 46). The study was conducted individually and the material was presented by means of visual and auditory ways. The conclusion is that the people with aphasia are prone to the effect of causing false memories to a similar extent as those without aphasia, even though this fact may be due to the non-linguistic deficits associated with aphasia.

This paper centres on an existential consciousness reading of the production of “Abantu Stand” by Rhodes University Theatre. “Abantu Stand” is a product of pieces of workshop sketches on current social, economic and political conversations in South Africa. From my participation in the back stage conversations of the artists and the production crew towards the final making of the production, to the discussions with the audience after each performance, I realise that, of a truth, as the closing song of the performance re-echoes, “It is not yet uhuru” for the South Africans, particularly, the people on the peripheral of the society!” In “Abantu Stand,” in spite of her post-apartheid status, South Africa appears as a volatile contested space. Of course, in reality, in many areas, 70 to 85% of lands remain in the hands of the settlers. There are towns and settlements outside of towns – for till now, majority of the blacks live in shanties outside the main towns. Inequality, mutual suspicion, mismanagement and oppression operate at different levels of the society – from race to race, gender to gender and tribe to tribe. There is the challenge of gender/sexual categorisation and the tension of “coming out” in relation to the residual resisting traditional culture of heterosexuals. The sketches in the performance are woven around these contentious issues to give room for free conversations. The desire is to provoke a revolutionary change. However, one thing is evident: South Africa, with the relics of apartheid, is still a state in transition.

Previous studies concerning the categorisation method have been based on short daytime measure- ments. These studies demonstrated urban-noise stratification in the daytime. Nevertheless, legislation and standards refer to noise estimation throughout the day. This paper presents the first attempt to apply the categorisation method to indicators obtained through long-term measurements. The study was conducted in Plasencia, Extremadura (Spain) which has approximately 41,500 inhabitants. First, we conducted a stratification of the roads using the categorisation method. Second, long-term measurements (approxi- mately one week) were conducted at different sampling locations across different categories of streets. The results were analysed by category. Moreover, the profile of the noise-level variation was analysed during the day. The results revealed a stratification of sound levels measured across the different categories. Furthermore, we found health risks due to the noise levels in this town. Short-term measurements were also conducted to complete the categorisation method suitability analysis.

Opis:
Three studies address the role of social consensus on evaluative standards in different comparative contexts. Previous research has documented that self-categorisation at the individual or group level changes social comparison effects in terms of assimilation and contrast. With regard to self-ratings of physical attractiveness, the present studies show that people who focus on group membership can benefit from including outstanding others in their reference group, whereas people who focus on their individual attributes run the risk of self-devaluation. It is argued that high consensus strengthens the association between evaluative standards and group membership and renders the inclusion of outstanding others more likely. Study 3 shows that the need to protect self-esteem moderates the influence of perceived consensus. Stressing the individual self led participants who received negative feedback to exclude outstanding others when consensus was low. Stressing the social self, however, led participants to include outstanding others when consensus was high.

This article demonstrates how language and culture determine the use of German „Heimat”, „Heimatland” and „Vaterland” translated into Polish as „ojczyzna”. From the perspective of anthropocentric linguistics, the central research object is primarily the translator who is responsible for the appropriateness of the translation result. The explication reflects the theories within the scope of linguistic worldview, developed by J. Bartmiński and A. Wierzbicka. The cognitive aspects of literary translation will be explained on the example of Mascha Kaléko’s poems, originally written in German.

Linguistic categorisation of colours: relative basicness of French colour termsCategorisation is one of the basic cognitive processes. Because of the continuous character of the colour spectrum, colour terms constitute an interesting material to study linguistic categorisation. The first part of this article offers a review of research on the linguistic categorisation of colours, especially on basic colour terms and prototypes. In the second part, the results of an empirical study on the basicness of French colour terms will be presented. The results suggest that colour terms are categorised as prototypically structured concepts, which supports the hypothesis of the relative basicness of colour terms.

This paper concerns the linguistic means used in order to describe auditory sensations or, more specifically, linguistic expressions that musicians apply to describe the sounds of different instruments of the drum set. The analysis concerns one of the types of such expressions – names of sounds produced by the living creature, that is, linguistic items that refer to articulate and inarticulate sounds produced by the human being and sounds that are typically associated with animals. From the Cognitive Grammar perspective, these names are analyzed as semantic extensions, which enables us to indicate schematic structures emerging from them – patterns of semantic extension.

Many researchers argue that the analysis process of any narrative and biographical inquiry is a delicate, arduous and complex stage and requires creativity, advanced skills and the technique of the researcher. This research note, based on a research project carried out in Spain, makes a unique contribution to this debate by reflecting about the Cross-Narrative Model, whose father was Lewis (1973), introducing two concepts: Biographical Units and the Analysis Units. Furthermore, it describes the analysis process laying emphasis on the particular methodological challenges and possible benefits of using these units to build up a two-part biographical account. This research note concludes that the use of the Cross-Narrative Analysis model could be considered as a possible alternative to the on-going discussion on advancing the rigorous and resourcefulness narrative qualitative analysis endeavour.

The aim of the study is an assessment of the possibility of semantic categorisation of common names and proper names in a disturbed discourse. The study used a case-experimental approach. The results were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The best-preserved semantic relations were indicated and phenomena relating to the quality of access to the mental dictionary were determined. The symptoms of the degradation of the semantic dictionary were indicated. The quantitative assessment included a percentage description of the results obtained. The subject performed the process of semantic categorisation of proper names (names belonging to less fuzzy categories) better than common names (with numerous connotations).

Acquiring a knowledge that goes beyond sensual experience (for example, looking through a microscope or telescope) and beyond categories rooted in language, requires a lot of courage, crossing the safe boundaries of the domesticated and designated world. The poetic porte-parole of Wis³awa Szymborska struggles with the experience of crossing these boundaries, which leads to undermining the customary categorisations established in our common language. The author of the paper interprets these poetic transgressions – evoked in the works of the Noble Prize winner – from the linguistic perspective. Namely, she refers them to two concepts of the linguistic categorisation of the world: logical (scientific), originating from Aristotle’s theory, and cognitive, alluding to Immanuel Kant’s philosophy focused on the popular (naïve and culturally determined) image of the world. The paper presents the manner in which devices of artistic expression, such as a metaphor, negation, tautology, gradation, etc., are adopted by the poet to undermine both the popular (stereotypical) qualification of phenomena and scientifically determined category boundaries.

A hotel facility classification system makes it possible to standardise the quality of hotel services, and should guarantee hotel compliance with predefined requirements and criteria. In order to determine the impact of a hotel’s rating in Poland on the quality of services it offers, the authors conducted a survey which covered a sample of 226 respondents. Based on the study, it was established that the classification system affects the quality of services provided by the classified properties, and that consumers of hotel services are aware of the standards and amenities which the hotels they choose should offer. However, it is important to indicate that nearly half of the respondents noted that a hotel’s category does not always guarantee that the appropriate standard required by law is being maintained.
System kategoryzacji obiektów hotelarskich umożliwia ujednolicenie jakości usług hotelarskich i gwarantuje klientowi spełnienie odgórnie określonych wymagań i kryteriów.

The paper presents the trilingual (English – Lithuanian – Norwegian) analysis of the terms denoting phobia types in mass media discourse. The aim of the paper is threefold: to perform conceptual categorisation of the terms, establish the term formation patterns in the investigated languages, as well as to determine which phobia types were most often discussed in the selected news media sites (“The Guardian”, “DELFI” and “Dagbladet”) over a 10-year period. For the purposes of the research, a trilingual comparable corpus was compiled, from which 268 terms were manually extracted, matched and investigated. The findings of the research provide important information on conceptual, linguistic and social aspects of the phobia terms which may contribute to terminology research in the psychiatry domain.

According to Ernst Cassirer’s views expressed in Philosophy of Symbolic Forms and Essay on Man a man is ‘a symbolic animal’, which means that: /1/ every meaning is symbolic, /2/ symbolisation creates the world but it does not reflect it, /3/ symbolisations are not individual but cultural, /4/ culture consists of ‘symbolic forms’, i.e., science, common sense, religion, magic, language and art, which create the world in different ways. Nelson Goodman in Languages of Art and Ways of Worldmaking developed Cassirer’s view towards more radical epistemological pluralism and changed his semiotic assumption. Cassirer accepted Frege’s understanding of symbolisation as a relation between three elements: a symbol, its meaning and a denoted object. For Goodman symbolisation is a two-element relation: between a symbol and an object, without the category of meaning. Symbols can denote or exemplify or refer to objects in complex and indirect ways. The paper aims to address the problem of the efficiency of that categorisation.

Opis:
Entering and staying on in the field or rather avoiding being kicked out are the two classic ethnographic challenges. The rather positivist nature of textbook guidance on dos and don’ts in fieldwork in general and in delicate issues in particular (for researchers` dilemmas in the field see Ryen 2002), tend to recommend a gentle, middle-class (rather female) interactional style. This gaze suffers from being both researcher-focused (cf.Fine 1994 on “Othering”) and based on problematic pre-fixed identities nailing us to the role pair as researcher and key informant. As the introductory extract illustrates, it takes patience also to have an ethnographer “hanging around”. This article deals with the credibility of qualitative research when accounting for or exploring how we do staying in the cross-cultural field and it asks how can we credibly explore the stamina that takes us further? If we accept fieldwork as social interaction, we need to bring the social (or the “inter”) of it into the exploration of our puzzle. Membership categorisation device (MCD) offers to take us closer to understanding and piecing together our puzzle, but to better get at the events taking place in field interaction there is a need also to introduce the wider cultural context and the images available (or not) to members. In this way I recognise the ethnomethodological differentiation between topic and resource, but argue that when understandings and images are not necessarily culturally shared and collective, we also need to make problematic how members deal with the unavailability of shared images. In the conclusion I argue that the artful side of the local interpretive work in the field is closely entangled with whatever meanings or images are available for construction (in line with Gubrium and Holstein 1997:121). In cross-cultural contexts more than in others, this is particularly delicate because in such contexts images and experiences often do not connect and may lead to complications or even breakdown in communication (Ryen 2002). Mending or repair thus becomes another crucial phenomenon, itself complex, in the evolving field relations. The analysis thus pinpoints the artistry of members` local collaborative efforts accentuated when constrained by images or descriptions that do not connect across cultures. This makes stamina a joint effort, though itself an intricate, emergent phenomenon. Next I will briefly introduce a couple of classic works on working with key informants followed by a brief presentation of the analytic approaches to be applied to my data from East- Africa. Before concluding, I will comment on “wading the field” as reflected in the close exploration of the cross-cultural extracts.
