Opis:
Despite its short history, the royal-university collection grew significantly: from 542 casts purchased by Stanislaus Augustus to over 750 sculptures finally gathered at the University. For years, agents purchasing artwork for Stanislaus Augustus, university professors and museum directors tried to cooperate with numerous casting workshops throughout Europe which produced copies of prominent ancient works of art. Plaster casts were especially important to the University of Warsaw. For a long time, they functioned as ars, a priceless collection presented to the wider public at the Column Hall, as well as educatio when they were utilized as a basic educational tool for students of painting, sculpture or architecture. This paper is devoted to the markings used by casting workshops that manufactured some of the surviving casts. Such designations allow not only to track contacts with European workshops but also to determine the origins of particular works and the exact time of their creation or the name of the caster.

Opis:
The paper describes 51 ice-wedge casts from Wierzchuca Nagórna village near Drohiczyn town in the Podlasie Lowland in Eastern Poland. The structures are preserved in a till of theWartanian Glaciation. In the exposure the mean distance between them is 1.7 m; their mean length is 1 m, and their width ranges within 0.2–0.5 m. Most of the structures are typically wedge-shaped, although in some cases less regular pockets or veins are also observed. Some of the casts display a complex origin. They are filledmostly by fine-grained sand, in the lower parts with wind-corroded grains, as well as by sand with gravel from the overlying deposits. Near the ice-wedge casts, traces of frost swelling, uplift and sorting in permafrost conditions, as well as of an active layer are preserved. The thickness of the permafrost active layer, as preserved, is about 0.5–0.7 m. The formation of ice-wedges reflects periglacial conditions during the Vistulian (Weichselian) Glaciation. Three palaeogeographical alternatives are discussed. Probably, the lack of traces of periglacial activity from the Wartanian Glaciation is a result of plateau denudation. The range of this denudation has also been estimated.

Opis:
The abandoned Zachełmie Quarry has been known for the discovery and descriptions of the trackways of a tetrapod, the oldest land vertebrate animal. Three well-preserved casts of single halite crystals were found on two salt samples collected from the same site. The sizes of the halite traces range from 1 to ca. 2.5-3 cm. Most certainly, they are two casts of hopper and one of cube form crystals. The local dolomite formations, studied and described several times in detail, indicate that a shallow and vast lagoon that had uncovered the sea bottom several times and periodically allowed for the sedimentation of evaporites was the sedimentation environment. In this paper, the author considers possible place and time of halite crystallisation, i.e. whether the crystals were precipitated from the basin’s solution or somewhat later, as a result of brine penetration through the carbonate sediment. Either halite “location” and precipitation time seem to be equally probable.

Opis:
Loading processes and the resulting load structures induced by processes related to periglacial conditions are compared to those induced by seismic shocks. The load structures themselves are relatively easily recognizable but the responsible trigger mechanism is, though depending on the geological context, commonly difficult to establish. Load structures like load casts, pseudonodules, ball-and-pillow structures and flame structures are commonly ascribed to instable density gradients within sediments and to differential loading, but their formation always requires liquefaction. In glacigenic sediments, deformation structures have most commonly been ascribed to periglacial processes (as a type of cryoturbations), but it becomes ever more clear that glacigenic sediments can, particularly during ice-front fluctuations, be affected by faulting-related earthquakes (due to glacio-isostatic adjustment), and the thus triggered seismic shocks may result in deformations, including - most commonly - load structures. We inventory the evidence that may help to distinguish, on the basis of textural and structural features, load structures with a seismic origin from those that result from periglacial processes, taking into account that truly diagnostic criteria do not exist.

Opis:
The goal of this work is the description of phenomena occurring during centrifugal infiltration of porous ceramic materials by liquid Al alloy. In this method, the pressure required to infiltration of liquid metal into pores of ceramic is generated by centrifugal force. From the beginning it was assumed that the porous ceramic material will create reinforcement layer in specific area of the casting. The forces that influence on the liquid metal during mould centrifugation and heat exchange between ceramic preform and metal alloy within the area of the front of infiltration were considered in the analysis. The paper presents also selected experiment results.

Opis:
During the long nineteenth century, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp – just like many other art schools in this period – assembled a collection of some 500 plaster casts after ancient and modern sculptures, which played an essential role in the education of young art students. The creation of such collections went in parallel with the blossoming of cast museums all over Europe, as well as the emergence of a large-scale exchange network set up to facilitate the international dissemination of plaster casts. However, in contrast to cast museums, which brought together masterpieces of classical Western sculpture in order to contribute to the aesthetic edification of the public, the cast collections of art academies had a more pragmatic and didactic function. This article focuses on cast collections at art academies, and how the formation and functioning of such collections related to broader educational concepts and practices at these schools. Taking the collection of plaster casts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp as a case study, we will trace the various actors, methods and strategies employed to create the collection, uncover how the collection related to the artistic idea(l)s expressed in the educational programme of that institution, and discuss how and where it was located and displayed. Based on the rich archives of the academy, it examines a broad range of different sources, including purchase lists, inventories and correspondence concerning the formation of the collection, as well as floor plans, photographs and original drawings attesting to the location and use of the casts. It traces the provenance of the objects, analyzes the profiles of the individuals and institutions involved in creating the collection, and identifies to what extent and how creative repurposing played a role in the collection’s functioning. The article argues how cast collections formed by art academies – in addition to representing the art historical canon of a given place or period – are an important reflection of the didactic practices, aesthetic priorities and, above all, the creative encounters that distinguish these institutions from the purposes of the public (cast) museum.

This work presents the technology of making foam plastics patterns used in casting as well as the final shaping stand. The analysis of the sintering process was carried out aiming at determining the influence of the pressure and the time of sintering on the flexural strength properties. The analysis of the research results confirmed that when the sintering pressure grows to the value of Pa =1,7 bar the flexural strength also increases, when the pressure value is higher than that, the degradation of the material takes place and the strength properties decrease.

This work presents the analysis of the final shaping process of the patterns aimed at determining the influence of the pressure and the time of sintering on the resistance to bending. The analysis of the research results proved that when the pressure of the sintering rises and reaches Ps=2.1 bar the resistance to bending increases, above this level of the pressure the resistance value starts decreasing. The time of styrofoam sintering at which the highest bending resistance values were obtained is ts=90 s. When the sintering pressure is less than 2 bar prolongation of the time of sintering over 90 s causes a slight increase in the resistance, however, at higher pressures prolongation of the time of sintering causes submelting of the styrofoam pattern.

Opis:
No numerical model has thus far addressed seismites, even though seismites are frequently used for the conditions which have to be fulfilled for the development of seismites have also been estimated only empirically. The present contribution is a first attempt to model numerically the soft-sediment deformation structures caused by the passage of S-waves through near-surface sedimentary layers. The simulations are based on the so-reconstruction of seismic events in the geological past. This is the more remarkable since the boundary called pressure tube model and the iSALE2D program. We modelled a seismic S-wave with six different vertical velocities, ranging from 1.6 to 2.6 m · s-1, passing through sediments with different densities and porosities in a sedimentary succession from the surface down to a depth of 10 m. The modelled soft-sediment deformation structures (load casts, flame structures, injection structures and sedimentary volcanoes) show similar geometries and sizes as those known from laboratory experiments and field studies. The geometry, size and type of these structures depend on the sediment properties and on the initial pressure used as a trigger mechanism, rather than on S-wave velocity. In contrast, the depth of the seismites appears to depend strongly on the S-wave velocity.
