The crowd-sourcing approach should be implemented into a new historical geoportal of Poland due to its increasing potential in WebGIS. Registered users will be able to acquire spatial data from various map series. As it requires feature class harmonization, a common symbol classification should be proposed. It will be based on chosen topographic maps of Polish land from the 19th and 20th centuries. Feature classes derived from archival maps will be standardized and reclassified, but with no information lost. This will be done in four steps which require: data acquisition, map content harmonization, feature class typification and attribute table elaboration. In addition, four methods of data harmonization can be distinguished: symbol sequence, semantic analogies, spatial relations and a combined method. The paper covers the elaboration of two thematic layers - roads and railways based on three topographic maps (Austrian 1:75 000, German 1:100 000, Russian 1: 126 000).

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest zaproponowanie koncepcji modelowania obiektów topograficznych w bazach danych historycznych w celu integracji geometrycznej i topologicznej. Głównym źródłem danych są mapy archiwalne w różnych skalach opracowane na przestrzeni 150 lat (od przełomu XVIII/XIX do połowy XX wieku). Ze względu na różnorodność materiałów źródłowych w celu integracji geometrii danych topograficznych zaproponowano podejście oparte na metodzie retrogresywnej.
Large informative potential of archive maps makes them a valuable source of spatial and attribute data for historians, geographers, archaeologists and planners. Since their proper application in GIS (Geographic Information System) often requires a proper database elaboration, there have been proposed several concepts of historical spatial databases. However, they do not include the full range of topographic maps’ content, and they were primarily based on secondary data sources (e.g. atlases, dictionaries). The aim of the paper is to propose the concept of topographic objects’ modelling in historical databases which will be based on archived maps in various scales developed over 150 years (eighteenth/nineteenth century – half of the twentieth century). Relating the data with current maps will be available through the connection between planned repository and contemporary spatial databases, e.g. Polish national Database of Topographic Objects (BDOT). In the project materials including Poland in modern borders will be analysed. Due to the variety of source materials, the main objective of text is to present the initial concept of historical topographic objects’ database structure on the example of the integration of topographic data geometry. The problem of how geometry should be stored for each features acquired from the map should be solved. Firstly, each of them can have a separate entry position (Time-slice snapshots) in the database. Secondly, socalled “metaobject” grid with fixed geometry, but variable attributes can be used (Space-time composite). Since archive maps are characterized by a largely low mathematical precision, therefore its content vectorization without considering the topological relationships between features seems to be incorrect. Maps’ elements belonging to the cultural landscape (e.g. settlements, communication network) should rather be stored with fixed geometry and variable attributes. In the contrast, the natural landscape (e.g. hydrography, afforestation), due to the different and difficult to capture changes especially on inaccurate maps (e.g. course of the river) should be stored with individual geometry for each feature depicted on each map.

The article presents a description of basic cartographic methods used to visualize spatial data. Information on average transaction prices of the undeveloped land in Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodeship, from The Agricultural Property Agency, Regional Office in Olsztyn, was the basis for map creation. Unified data allows the accurate presentation of information and highlights the differences in selected cartographic methods. The objective of this article is to describe the selection process of the best method for presenting spatial data by identifying the data structure and visualization purpose; as well as to describe the different types of data presentation for its potential use for work related to activities performed by professionals dealing with the real estate market and by individuals.
Artykuł przedstawia opis podstawowych metod kartograficznych wykorzystywanych do wizualizacji danych przestrzennych. Podstawą do stworzenia opracowań mapowych były dane o średnich cenach transakcyjnych nieruchomości gruntowych niezabudowanych w województwie warmińsko-mazurskim, pochodzące z Agencji Nieruchomości Rolnych, Oddział Terenowy w Olsztynie. Ujednolicone dane pozwalają na dokładne przedstawienie i uwidocznienie różnic w wybranych metodach kartograficznych. Celem artykułu jest opisanie procesu wyboru najlepszej metody przedstawiania danych przestrzennych, poprzez identyfikację struktury danych oraz celu wizualizacji; a także scharakteryzowanie poszczególnych rodzajów ich prezentacji w celu ich potencjalnego wykorzystania do prac związanych z czynnościami wykonywanymi przez osoby zajmujące się zawodowo rynkiem nieruchomości oraz przez osoby prywatne.

Wizualizacja danych czasowo-przestrzennych opiera się głównie na wykorzystaniu odpowiednio dobranych metod kartograficznych. Można wyróżnić dwa zasadnicze podejścia do powyższego problemu: wykorzystanie animacji lub sekwencji obrazów, bądź jednoczesne wyświetlanie warstw prezentujących stany obiektów w danych stanach czasowych. Pierwsza z metod świetnie nadaje się do oddania charakteru zjawiska oraz głównego trendu zmian w czasie, jednak nie jest najlepszym rozwiązaniem dla szczegółowych analiz w wielu stanach czasowych. Druga grupa metod (do której należy między innymi Space Time Cube), w której cechy przestrzenne obiektów prezentowane są w dwóch wymiarach, a trzecim wymiarem pozostaje czas, lepiej nadaje się do szczegółowych analiz. W pracy zaproponowano wykorzystanie triangulacji do wizualizacji i parametryzacji zmian czasowo-przestrzennych. Metoda ta opiera się na połączeniu zmodyfikowanej metody Space Time Cube z triangulacją. Atutem prezentowanego rozwiązania jest możliwość adaptacji klasycznych analiz przestrzennych na potrzeby opisu zmian w czasie geometrii obiektów przestrzennych.
Visualisations of spatio-temporal data are mainly based on appropriately selected cartographic methods. Two main approaches to this problem exist: the use of animation or a sequence of images or simultaneous display of layers presenting the state of the objects in given time steps. In the second group of methods (for example Space Time Cube), the spatial characteristics of objects are presented in two dimensions and the third dimension is time. This group of methods is more suitable for detailed analysis. In this paper the use of triangulation for visualisation and analysis of spatio-temporal changes is presented. The presented method is based on combination of the modified Space Time Cube method and triangulation. The advantage of this solution is the possibility to adapt the classic spatial analysis for the description of changes during determination of the geometry of spatial objects.

Opis:
The authors of the article pay their attention to the lack of a generally accepted classification of the cartographic presentation methods. The classification, which was described in the Ratajski’s handbook (1989) in the mostly extensive way, is commonly used in the Polish literature. According to the authors, it would be appropriate to modify one of the types of symbols (quantitative ones) as an independent method of data presentation at the quantitative level, in addition to the method of diagram, choropleth, dot method and isoline one.

Opis:
A topographic map is a representation of the terrain, its landform and spatial elements present therein. Land surveying and photogrammetric measurements must be conducted in order to produce such cartographic document. The following must be done while obtaining information on topographic objects: determine the character and type of an object or phenomenon; determine the range of its occurrence; indicate a precise location. The next stage involves classification of objects into relevant classes and categories, i.e. arable land, pastures, forests, water basins, technical infrastructure, buildings, and other. Then, the determined classes undergo the process of cartographic generalization by combining smaller elements into a single complex, determination of a common border of their occurrence, and application of relevant graphic symbols and colours. The measuring technique which provides quick and accurate topographic information about the surrounding area is the one that uses Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Digital photographs taken during the flight are the basis for generating a high-quality orthophotomap. Accurate determination of the location of individual spatial elements allows large-scale cartographic documents to be developed. This paper will present the method of charting topographic maps of rural areas based on orthophotomaps made from the photographs taken during the UAV flight. Supervised and unsupervised methods of object classification will be tested in order to increase the effectiveness of determination of types and occurrence range of individual topographic objects, and the obtained results will be used to chart a topographic map of the studied area.

Opis:
Mapy glebowo-rolnicze w skali 1:5 000 opracowywane były w latach 60-tych w formie analogowej (barwnej i czarno-białej) dla obszaru całego kraju. Powstawały na podstawie istniejących map klasyfikacyjnych, badań terenowych i laboratoryjnych poprzedzonych interpretacją zdjęć lotniczych. Stanowią cenny zbiór informacji o warunkach glebowych, przydatności rolniczej gruntów, oraz pośrednio, o przydatności gruntów dla innych, pozarolniczych funkcji. Stanowią źródło informacji wykorzystywane między innymi przy podejmowaniu decyzji planistycznych. Na mapach tych wydzielano kontury o powierzchni powyżej 0,5 ha, ale przywiązywano wagę do tego aby nie pominąć małych lub wąskich elementów, które dawały istotną informację o rolniczej przestrzeni produkcyjnej. Dokładność wyznaczenia konturów jest oceniana na około 10–50 m. Wynika ona z faktu, że nie brano pod uwagę płynności zmian pokrywy glebowej zarówno w przestrzeni geograficznej jak i przestrzeni opisujących ją atrybutów. Zdecydowało to o niepewności przebiegu granic konturów glebowo-rolniczych na tych mapach. Obecnie, na podstawie rozporządzenia Rady Ministrów z 3 października 2011 r. w sprawie rodzajów kartograficznych opracowań tematycznych i specjalnych [Dz. U. Nr 222, poz. 1328], mapy tematyczne, w tym glebowo-rolnicze mają stać się tematycznymi opracowaniami cyfrowymi, uwzględnianymi w infrastrukturze informacji przestrzennej. Celem opracowania jest przedstawienie metod prezentacji kartograficznej cyfrowych map glebowo-rolniczych z uwzględnieniem niepewności danych. Większość pojęć opisujących glebę związanych z typologią gleb lub oceną ich jakości i przydatności rolniczej jest stosunkowo mało precyzyjna. W dużej mierze związane jest to ze specyfiką składowej środowiska przyrodniczego jaką jest gleba w przestrzeni geograficznej. Większość procesów glebowych tworzy ciągłe (rozmyte) klasy. Dla mapy glebowo-rolniczej klasami tymi są rozmyte kontury przynależności do danego kompleksu przydatności rolniczej. Brak pewności, wynikający z nieprecyzyjnych znaczeń stosowanych pojęć, modelowany jest przy zastosowaniu teorii zbiorów rozmytych i logiki rozmytej. Rozkład przestrzenny wartości przynależności zjawiska glebowego do pojedynczej rozmytej klasy może być przedstawiony na mapie za pomocą konwencjonalnej metody kartograficznej. Jednak powstaje wówczas tyle map ile zostało wyznaczonych klas, co nie prowadzi automatycznie do wyznaczenia przestrzennie ciągłych klas, które można przedstawić w postaci jednej prezentacji Istnieją metody opracowania wynikowej mapy prezentującej rozmieszczenie badanego zjawiska z uwzględnieniem rozmycia granic między wyznaczonymi klasami, można podzielić je na trzy kategorie: wyostrzania klasyfikacji (ang. defuzzification), oparte na współczynniku zmieszania (CI – ang. Confusion index) oraz metody graficzne. W artykule przedstawiono przegląd wybranych metod prezentacji kartograficznych wraz z ich adaptacją na potrzeby mapy glebowo-rolniczej. Skale barw zostały opracowane w percepcyjnej przestrzeni barw CIECAM (CAM ang. Color Appearance Model) niezależnej od urządzeń reprodukujących barwy oraz od warunków obserwacji. Podano również ich odniesienie do przestrzeni barw CIE Lab dla określonych, typowych warunków obserwacji, oraz wartości RGB dla przyjętego standardowego monitora.
Soil-agricultural maps at a scale of 1:5 000 were prepared in the 1960’s in the analogue form (colour and black and white) for the area of the entire country. They were developed based on the existing classification maps as well as field and laboratory studies preceded by the interpretation of aerial photographs. They constitute a valuable collection of information on the soil conditions, agricultural usefulness of land, and indirectly on the usefulness of the land for other, non-agricultural functions. They constitute a source of information used in taking planistic decisions. Contours with an area of more than 0.5 ha were marked on the maps. Small or narrow elements providing significant information on the agricultural production space were included. The accuracy of the contours distinguished is estimated for approx. 10-50 m. The uncertainty of the location of the boundaries results from the accuracy of marking of soil-agricultural contours, and lack of consideration of the continuality of changes in the soil cover both in the geographical space and in the space of attributes describing it. Currently, based on the order of the Council of Ministers of 3 October 2011 on types of thematic and special cartographic documents [Journal of Laws No. 222, item 1328], thematic maps, including agricultural maps, are to become thematic digital documents considered in the spatial information infrastructure. The objective of the paper is to present methods of cartographic presentation of digital soilagricultural maps with consideration of data uncertainty. Majority of terms describing soil, related to soil typology or assessment of soil quality and agricultural usefulness, is relatively little precise. This is related to the specificity of the geographical phenomenon of soil. Majority of soil processes form continuous (fuzzy) classes. For a soil-agricultural map, they are constituted by fuzzy contours of belonging to a given agricultural usefulness complex. Lack of certainty, resulting from imprecise markings of terms applied, is modelled with the application of the theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. The spatial distribution of values of belonging of a soil phenomenon to an individual fuzzy class can be presented on the map by means of the conventional cartographic method. This generates a number of maps equal to the number of distinguished classes. This does not automatically lead to the determination of spatially continuous classes in the form of one presentation. There are methods of development of a result map presenting the distribution of a given phenomenon with consideration of the fuzziness of boundaries between the distinguished classes. They can be divided into three categories: defuzzification, methods based on the Confusion index, and graphic methods. The article provides a review of selected methods of cartographic presentation with their adaptation for the purposes of a soil-agricultural map. The colour scales were developed in the CIECAM (CAM - Colour Appearance Model) perceptual colour space independent from the devices reproducing colours, and from the observation conditions. Moreover, their relation to the CIE Lab colour space for specified, typical observation conditions was determined, as well as RGB values for the standard monitor adopted.

Mapa zasadnicza prowadzona jest w Polsce od ponad 35 lat. Metody i środki wykorzystywane do jej prowadzenia były zawsze adekwatne do dostępnych środków technicznych. Mapa zasadnicza, od początku jej prowadzenia była najwierniejszym co do treści, i najdokładniejszym co do lokalizacji modelem rzeczywistości wykorzystywanym przede wszystkim do celów urzędowych jako pomoc w projektowaniu i realizacji inwestycji. Obecnie obowiązujące przepisy, związane z implementacją dyrektywy INSPIRE, wnoszą wiele zmian w funkcjonowaniu mapy zasadniczej. Nie zawsze są to jednak zmiany korzystne. W artykule autor przedstawia swoje spostrzeżenia dotyczące problemów w prowadzeniu mapy zasadniczej na bazie ponad 20-letnich doświadczeń związanych z automatyzacją prowadzenia mapy zasadniczej w wielu ośrodkach dokumentacji geodezyjnej i kartograficznej.
The base map in Poland has been maintained for more than 35 years. Methods and means used for creating the base map were always adequate to available technical means. From the beginning, the base map was the most faithful as to the content, and the most accurate as to the location of the reality model used mainly for official purposes as an aid in the design and realization of investments. Current regulations related to the implementation of the INSPIRE directive, make a lot of changes in the functioning of the base map. However, these changes are not always beneficial. On the basis of long personal experiences related to the automation of maintaining the base map in many geodetic and cartographic documentation centres (PODGiK) the author presents his observations of problems encountered during implementation of new regulations in the functioning of the base map.

Zasygnalizowano cały szereg nowych zadań związanych z modelowaniem i prezentacją danych przestrzennych, które doczekały się w Polsce i na świecie jedynie częściowych rozwiązań, najczęściej praktycznych, zrealizowanych w ramach zamkniętych zespołów koncepcyjnych i wdrożeniowych firm komercyjnych. Wciąż brakuje metodycznego ujęcia tych zagadnień, nie jest rozwijana i uzupełniana istniejąca metodyka kartograficzna. Jest to wprowadzenie do następnych artykułów szczegółowo przedstawiających problematykę kartograficzną w kontekście rozwoju tzw. mobilnego GIS oraz mobilnej kartografii, budowy i użytkowania geoportali intenetowych, a także produkcji map na podstawie baz danych geograficznych.
The article attempts to present the changing faces of contemporary cartography caused by development of information technology, popularization of new information media and growing accessibility of larger geographic information datasets. It also signals some issues of modeling and visualization of spatial data, which are only partially solved, usually for practical reasons and within closed research and implementation teams of commercial companies. Until today these issues have not been presented methodically, the current cartographic methodology has not been developed and amended. The article also introduces more detailed issues of the development of mobile GIS, mobile cartography, construction and usage of Internet geoportals and map production basing on geographical databases.

W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe reguły i wybrane aspekty technologiczne związane z opracowaniem prezentacji kartograficznych wykorzystywanych w urządzeniach mobilnych na przykładzie systemów nawigacji samochodowej.
The article is the second in a 'New faces of cartography' series. It develops and discusses in detail the issues of mobile maps as an area of cartography which has increasing significance and which poses new methodological and technological challenges. The article presents basie rules and selected technological aspects connected to the preparation of cartographic presentations applied in mobile devices, e.g. road navigation systems. Special attention has been paid to: - choice of color on maps depending on the type of external lighting of a mobile system, - seleetion of the range of map scales and methods of automatic scale changes depending on the particular mobile system used, - necessity to limit the range of displayed information in relation to traditional maps, - rules of generation and dynamie display of text on maps, - necessity to differentiate important objects placed on the planned trip route, - method of construction of graphic signs considering technical limitations of mobile system displays, - rules of defining of the hierarchy of objects in the database of a mobile system, - presenting dynamic information on maps. Presented problems will be researched in further detail. Complexity of the presented issues points out the immensity of tasks lying before the cartographers in the mobile technology era. The area of research is very wide and the challenges are interesting for any cartographer.

The article is the fourth and last of a 'New faces of cartography' series. It develops and discusses in detail the issue of map production using geographical databases. Special attention is paid to a common differentiation between databases built according to a Digital Landscape Model (DLM) and Digital Cartographic Model (DCM). The author discusses the benefits of modern database technologies for map production and the impact of their structure on the level of difficulty of cartographic data visualization. The article presents two examples, which illustrate the significance and reality of the process of producing maps from databases. The first is the Topographical Database, which together with the military VMap database exemplifies broad application of database technologies in Polish geodesy and cartographic services. In both cases a typical GIS database with data recorded in a relative database is at the input of the map production process. A system elaborated and used in PPWK (Polish Cartographic Publishing House) is another example of a large scale application of a GIS database. At the basis of the system there is a relational database managed from the level of ArcGIS software and a number of additional original applications using their own GIS Navigo components. The article suggests that cartographic skill should nowadays be accompanied with a basic knowledge of IT and GIS technology. At the same time a cartographer takes on a new role - of the one who defines and cooperates during the process of database creation, so that its structure ensures a correct cartographic interpretation of the data, using various media and cartographic presentation methods.

W zaawansowanej wizualizacji danych referencyjnych możliwe jest wykorzystanie do prezentacji modelu znakowego (DCM) w integracji z modelem obrazowym (DIM). Można wtedy obraz kartograficzny (zgeneralizowany i odpowiednio zredagowany) uzupełnić obrazem fotograficznym terenu. W odniesieniu do takich prezentacji użyto tutaj sformułowania wizualizacja hybrydowa. Sformułowanie hybrydowa dotyczy wiec cech modelu rzeczywistości geograficznej i nie nawiązuje do funkcjonalności aplikacji GIS, które (przynajmniej w segmencie wiodącym na rynku) od dawna już są „hybrydowe” – zdolne do pozyskiwania, zarządzania, analizowania i wizualizacji danych zapisywanych w obu kategoriach modeli danych – wektorowych i rastrowych. Posługując sie dyskretyzacja modelu obrazowego - czyli różnicując cechy tego modelu w odniesieniu do różnych klas obiektów, można uzyskać hybrydowa wizualizacje zintegrowana. Wybrane klasy obiektów wektorowych są wykorzystywane tu jako elementy maskujące, różnicujące graficznie obraz tonalny w rejonach zajętych przez przyjęte grupy obiektów przestrzennych. Prowadzi to do uzyskania efektu wprowadzenia części obrazu tonalnego na poszczególne plany percepcyjne wyróżniane w postrzeganiu map wektorowych. Taka wizualizacja będzie wiec odbierana jak model kartograficzny, uczytelniony, uzupełniony za pomocą obrazu terenu. Referat ukazuje propozycje takich wizualizacji oraz wskazuje na cechy formy i treści map opracowanych jako wizualizacje hybrydowe, a przede wszystkim porusza problem metody dyskretyzacji modelu obrazowego. Proponuje sie tu wykorzystanie wybranych, odpowiednio zagregowanych grup klas obiektów wektorowej bazy danych do tworzenia regionów różnicujących wygląd obrazu teledetekcyjnego. Kluczem do zaproponowanego podejścia jest potraktowanie obrazu kartograficznego za podstawowy element wizualizacji i wykorzystanie modelu teledetekcyjnego (np. ortofotomapy) jako elementu uzupełniającego jej treść w wybranych rejonach i korygującego wizualizacje wybranych klas obiektów.
Among digital models used in geovisualisation, three important categories can be distinguished: database model, known as DLM, cartographic (sign) model, known as DCM, and image model (DIM). Nowadays, we can observe an inclination to integrate these categories into complex models of geographic reality, which allow to analyse or visualise spatial data more effectively. Such models have been called hybrid models. In this kind of visualisation, a map – sign model can really serve as the base, and the additional information may be provided by image model. Both classes of this visualisation (map and image) have to comply with a series of requirements, to be integrated into clear - from the user’s perspective - hybrid model of reality. The solution of using both DCM and DIM leads to different results, depending on the manner of graphic modification of image model. In each case, vector graphics respects accepted conventions (in visualisation of reference data this conventions are usually official), and may be very easily changed in visualisation process, depending on the scale level and designation of the visualisation. The result of simple hybrid visualisation is always read as a tonal image, which has been completed with selected feature classes of vector model. Examples of this type images are used in web services, e.g. GoogleMaps, OS MasterMap. The image models used here constitute the grounds for visualisations, and their graphics dominates in the perception of integrated models. When the discretisation of DIM is processed, and different fields of image are graphically distinguished, the integrated hybrid visualisation can be performed. Chosen feature classes, symbolized in DCM, are used as masks of photo-image and they differentiate graphics of DIM (in places taken by this feature classes). Consequently, the fields of image model occupy different perception plans, the same applies to the vector graphics (because of common reading of this models). Such kind of visualisation reference data will be perceived as a cartographic model, completed by implemented set of fields of image model.

Artykuł jest próbą uporządkowania pojęć funkcjonujących na pograniczu informatyki i kartografii (w większości zadomowionych w otoczeniu systemów informacji geograficznej), które stanowią informatyczny, a zarazem kartograficzny opis rzeczywistości - pojęć definiowanych z punktu widzenia kartografa.
The article attempts to classify the terms concerning the modeling of spatial data functioning in the environment of systems of geographical information, which are both digital and cartographic description of geographic reality. In the first section models of spatial data, as elements of models of IT systems concerning space (GIS) are differentiated from database models and models of knowledge, which are independent elements external to system models (fig. 5). The article defines database models and presents their development towards the integration of tools serving the database spatial element with the standard database management system (DBMS). The categories of geographic reality models which are characterized most widely are those useful for modeling of objects and spatial phenomena with IT systems, particularly GIS. These models are characterized according to the criteria of their perception and interpretation. Two major categories should be mentioned here: mental models, which are created in reader's mind and digital models, which appear mostly in digital form. They should be treated separately from dafa models, although some categories of geographic reality models make sense only through certain spatial data models. The article presents features of the above mentioned model categories and provides examples of data sets belonging to them. Mental models are created in reader's mind as a result of his own experience under the influence of direct perception of geographic space. Material models can have three forms: - Topographic model (database), a.k.a. Digital Landscape Model (DIM) - Cartographic model (sign), a.k.a. Digital Cartographic Model (DCM) - Teledetection model (picture), a.k.a. image model. Topographic model contains information on spatial objects (phenomena), the location of which has been established with coordinates of selected reference area. It is characterized with strict georeference, which results in precise preserving of topological properties of objects and creation of unique data structures during its implementation. This model best represents spatial relations between objects and can be the basis for spatial analyses conducted with the use of digital techniques. Cartographic model - (sign) conveys information about objects (phenomena) using fixed graphic conventions - a system of cartographic signs, which are the medium of geographic information. It is a representation of geographic space prepared for direct perception by human senses. Topological features of represented objects are preserved indirectly - they can be read through the method of image interpretation (fig. 9). Teledetection model, often referred to as image model, is a model of geographic reality, which conveys the picture of the area automatically recorded in various ranges of electromagnetic spectrum. In this case object classification of information does not apply, so object classes and their attributes can not be directly modeled. A pixel is a medium of information. Air photos and satellite pictures are examples of such models (fig. 10).
