Opis:
This paper presents theoretical framework of mother’s caregiving system, that is the goal-corrected behavioral system reciprocal to attachment. It is guided by mental representations of self as a caregiver, child as an object of protection and mutual relation. Caregiving representational system is influenced by the adult’s history of attachment and current experiences with the child, his/her characteristics and social-contextual factors. Development of the caregiving system from childhood to adulthood, and particularly during transition to parenthood, is presented.

This paper provides a window into the ways kinship caregivers of elderly persons and people with disabilities describe their experiences with social services in Poland. Kinship caregivers in Poland, the majority of whom are women, often struggle with inadequate access to social services dedicated to people with disabilities and the elderly. One of the major issues faced by caregivers who try to secure these services, are complex rules and regulations which frequently make it very difficult to access information and assistance. By the way of critical discourse analysis, this paper examines letters by and interviews with kinship caregivers in Poland. These two data sets present the problems faced by kinship caregivers of elderly persons and people with disabilities who are frequently left frustrated by their interactions the social services system and its gatekeepers. Therefore, the authors hope that this study will provide policymakers responsible for social policy in Poland with some useful insights and suggestions.

Opis:
Vietnamese immigrants are the third largest group of immigrants in the Czech Republic. At the same time, in comparison with other immigrant groups and even the majority population there is higher share of children under 15 years of age. As they are mostly economic migrants and usually working as entrepreneurs, stall-keepers and owners of shops and restaurants, the pace of their work life in a new country is intense. Private family life is minimized and Vietnamese parents have to hire Czech nannies to look after their children. Spending more time with their Czech nannies than with parents, these children are slowly integrating into Czech society – through Czech fairy tales that their paid Czech nannies read them, the Czech songs they sing them, or the Czech food they cook for them. Drawing upon qualitative research conducted with Vietnamese mothers, Czech nannies, and children of Vietnamese immigrants, the paper looks into how children (born both in Vietnam and in the Czech Republic) of Vietnamese parents who grow up Czech with their Czech nannies perceive the role of the Czech nanny in their lives and what meanings they put to the delegated caregiving. It focuses on how children describe the role of their nannies as a “door to the majority” teaching them the “authenticity” of the Czech culture, mediating them their social networks, and enabling them to understand and partly experience what it means to be the part of the majority society.

Opis:
Many second-generation Vietnamese immigrant children in the Czech Republic are brought up by Czech nannies. While their parents are incorporated into the labour market in order to provide their children with suffi cient economic capital for their education, the role of caregivers is relinquished to nannies. Both parents and nannies become important actors in the children’s educational process, from the stage of acquiring fi rst words, through primary school, to the moment they are admitted into university. This paper analyses the roles of parents and nannies in this educational process. It draws upon 60 interviews conducted with fi rst-generation immigrant mothers, second-generation immigrants, and Czech nannies. The perspective of all three actors are presented here in order to reveal the interviewee’s understanding of the role of education in the parent-child and nanny-child relationships. How is education manifested in the defi nitions of parenting and caregiving? The paper illuminates the educational strategies taking place outside the educational institution as being an inherent part of everyday life. Simultaneously, the article reveals the meanings of education for the immigrant families as being linked both to past experience and future expectations.

Opis:
The caregiver role can be challenging as family members address the oft en complex needs of aging relatives. Resilience, the process or trait related to addressing and rebounding from adversity, may play a role in determining how well family caregivers fare. In this study, the authors explored the relationships between resilience and well-being in a uniquely resilient group – family caregivers to Holocaust survivors. Surveys were completed by a convenience sample of family caregivers (N = 89) living in the United States. One-way between subjects ANOVA with Scheff é post-hoc tests were run to compare low-, moderate-, and high-resilience caregivers. Depression was significantly lower for each progressively higher resilience group. Physical well-being was signifi cantly lower in the low-resilience group. Caregiver burden was not signifi cantly diff erent between groups. Resilience may have a prophylactic role in preserving physical and emotional well-being in family caregivers; however, resilience and burden may have a more nuanced relationship. Burden may have been underreported due to (a) comparisons with the stress experienced by the Holocaust survivors and/or (b) a heightened sense of filial piety. Health care practitioners should be aware of the complex role that resilience can potentially play both in protecting well-being and in masking burden in family caregivers.

Opis:
Margaret Atwood’s novels are usually celebrated for their blunt feminism. However, in Moral Disorder—a series of interconnected stories that forms a novel—feminist concerns are replaced with worries about territory and survival. The protagonist is an insider whose sole concern is to survive and to protect her territory. The confrontation between the narrator as the insider and the outsiders does not occur directly but could be inferred by her cruelty toward other characters and her violence against the animals under her care. The present study argues that this cruelty, which abounds in the novel, could be viewed as a substitute for violence against the outsiders. The narrator’s gaze at the Indian boy who entered the protagonist’s territory manifests a garrison mentality. The frequent references to axes in the novel are compared to the use of axes in “Wilderness Tips,” a short story by Atwood in which axes also have a metaphoric significance. The beheading and dismemberment of domestic animals could be the punishment awaiting the intruder. The novel establishes a division between the insider/outsider, here/there, self/other and civilized/barbaric to call for action and awareness about the importance of protecting one’s territory.

Opis:
Teenage motherhood is often an indirect effect of abusive experiences of young mother in her childhood and a risk factor for less optimal development of the mother-child relation. The quality of maternal caregiving representations plays a significant role in the development of both, mother-child relation and child attachment quality. In the present study I asked the question to what extent the early age of childbirth of mother is also linked to the quality of maternal caregiving representation. Two groups of preschool children’s mothers were compared in terms of the frequency of their childhood abusive experiences and their caregiving representations (trust, helplessness & and attempt to control, distancing in caregiving relation). Mothers who gave birth under the age of 18 years (N = 34) reported more experiences of emotional, physical, sexual abuse and negligence and demonstrated a lower level of trust in caregiving relation and a higher level of helplessness and attempts to control as compared to those who gave birth at the age of 25 or later (N = 36). To establish predictors of the caregiving representations quality, the stepwise linear regression analysis was performed. The sum of abusive experiences in childhood and the age of the child were main predictors of the caregiving representations quality. The age of childbirth was a significant (but the weakest) predictor only in the case of helplessness and attempts to control in caregiving relation. The results and limitations of the study were discussed and the directions for further research were indicated.

Opis:
Caring for a family member with dementia involves multifaceted relational issues linked to the construction of caregiving as an emotional, symbolic and morally sanctionable practice inscribed in kin relations and dominant femininity (Paoletti 2007). As the disease disrupts taken-for-granted expectations for a person with dementia and the entire family, this qualitatively new situation necessitates the (re)negotiation of kin roles and responsibilities (Peel 2017; Purves 2011). By applying conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis to an audio-taped open-ended interview with an American female caregiver, this paper investigates in-depth how she discursively navigates complex familial role-relational trajectories while assisting her mother with dementia. The study examines the situatedness of role vis-á-vis self-other relations with assumptions about categories within the membership categorization devices ‘family’ and ‘gender’ being critical to this process. It documents how the participant contextualizes care experience not only in the standardized relational pair ‘daughter-mother’ but brings into focus a broader constellation of historical, contemporaneous or hypothetical aspects of kinship ties (e.g., with her parents, siblings or children), each of which invokes distinct expectations, responsibilities and loyalties which sometimes competing with other relations. The study thus exposes certain commonsense propositions concerning normative family role-relationships which function as powerful benchmarks for making life choices, interpreting one’s experiences, and morally evaluating oneself and others while providing care to kin with dementia.

Opis:
The present paper aims to propose a possible ways of integrating analyses related with parental socialization with analyses related with parenting, caregiving and raising up/upbringing a child. A few theoretical analyses were proposed to this end. First, concept of socialization was discussed in its culture related and axiological aspects. Secondly, socialization theory with dimensions of socialization as proposed by Gruces and Davidov (2010) was described. Finally, the proposition of the hierarchical structuration of concepts under the study was formulated introducing relations between parental socialization, parental caregiving, as well as predominant in main stream English-language literature concept of parenting, and common in Polish literature concept of raising up/upbringing. Building the bridge connecting these concepts is needed for at least two reasons. On the one hand, it is needed for researchers connecting various concepts and theories of the lower level than socialization theory in their analyses, e.g., attachment theory in which parental caregiving is analyzed with parenting framework traditionally having different roots. On the other hand, bridging these concepts may be helpful in connecting Polish tradition of research on raising up/upbringing and main stream foreigner psychological research on parenting and socialization.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the literature on conflicts between adult siblings concerning caregiving to elderly parents. Aging process of parents involves a lot of new issues, decisions and can bring the best or the worst in sibling relationships. Potential sources of conflicts may emerge from the lack of clarity in families as to who and to what extent is supposed to give support to aging parents. The perspective of long time caregiving to older parents may for many adult children be hard to imagine and difficult to render. The intergenerational solidarity paradigm was used as a conceptual framework in explanation of motivation of adult siblings to support their older parents and successfully resolve all conflicts. The article concludes with a recommendation of using family mediation as a valu- able method of conflict resolution between adult siblings concerning caregiving to older parents.
