Introduction. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the Western world. Annually there are approximately 1.8 million new cases worldwide. It is characterized by poor prognosis with a 5-year survival of 10-17% depending on the country. Contributing to this poor prognosis is a mainly late diagnosis, as well as a fairly frequent recurrence despite radical surgery. Over the years, scientists have been searching for a tumor marker that would be useful for patients with lung cancer. Aim. The aim of this study is to discuss the significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the diagnosis, prognosis of the disease course, and monitoring patients with lung cancer. Methods. Review of the literature using the PubMed database, Termedia, Via Medica and the key issue: carcinoembryonic antigen as a tumor marker in lung cancer. Conclusions. Serum CEA level can be a reliable complement to the diagnosis of lung cancer. It can be helpful in preoperative prediction of disease course and qualification for adjuvant treatment of non-small cell lung cancer especially adenocarcinoma. Trends and normalization of CEA during chemotherapy have an impact on progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) of patients. Various available publications describe CEA as a marker for metastatic lung cancer, which is the most specific for metastasis in the liver and brain.

Opis:
Benign pancreatic hyperenzymemia (BPH) or Gullo’s Syndrome is a persistent elevation of pancreatic enzymes activity, observed for at least one year, with no pancreatic disorder. This diagnosis is extremely important because it allows us to avoid many unnecessary examinations performed during the diagnostic process. We present a case of a 25-year-old man who was admitted for recurrent elevated lipase and amylase serum values over a time period of 2 years who presented with non-specific abdominal complaints. Interestingly, his routine tests showed sustained elevated serum amylase and lipase activity. He was intensively diagnosed due to pancreatic hyperenzymemia, but no pancreatic disease was detected. The observation lasted two years. The serum lipase and serum amylase levels continued to increase after that time. This diagnosis requires attention because BPH can be the first symptom of pancreatic cancer.

Introduction and Objective. Locally advanced rectal cancers witha high risk of recurrence need multimodal treatment Rusing neoadiuvant preoperative chemoradiotherapy or preoperative radiotherapy. Both rectal cancer surgery and the additional chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy may cause late sequelae. The aim of the study is to present a clinical situation in which a pelvic recurrence of rectal cancer has to be distinguished from therapy side effects. Insufficiency fracture (IF) is one of the therapy side-effects. It can cause pain and decrease mobility and it is a well-known late complication to pelvic radiotherapy, but can be misinterpreted as a local recurrence. Conclusions. It is extremely important to distinguish IF from metastases, which may require biopsies and initiation of potentially toxic treatments such as chemotherapy. MRI and CT scans are complementary modalities to make an accurate diagnosis of IF.

Opis:
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is an oncofoetal cell surface glycoprotein that serves as an important tumour marker for colorectal and some other carcinomas. Its immunoglobulin-like structure places CEA within the immunoglobulin superfamily. CEA functions in several biological roles including homotypic and heterotypic (with other CEA family members) cell adhesion. Cell-cell interaction can be modulated by different factors, e.g., post-translational modifications such as glycosylation. The purpose of this study was to examine whether changes in carbohydrate composition of CEA oligosaccharides can influence homotypic (CEA-CEA) interactions. In order to modulate glycosylation of CEA we used two different glycosylation mutants of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, Lec2 and Lec8. Lec2 cells should produce CEA with nonsialylated N-glycans, while Lec8 cells should yield more truncated sugar structures than Lec2. Parental CHO (Pro5) cells and the glycosylation deficient mutants were stably transfected with CEA cDNA. All three CEA glycoforms, tested in a solid-phase cell adhesion assay, showed an ability to mediate CEA-dependent cell adhesion, and no qualitative differences in the adhesion between the glycoforms were observed. Thus, it may be assumed that carbohydrates do not play a role in homotypic adhesion, and the interactions between CEA molecules depend solely on the polypeptide structure.

Opis:
Frequently, early detection of a malignant condition prevents most premature deaths. In this paper, three new designs are proposed for the microcantilever-based biosensor to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) tumor biomarkers. CEA is used for several types of human cancers, e.g., lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and gastric cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. The proposed models are designed and the finite element method (FEM) analysis of these biosensors is performed using a COMSOL 5.4 Multiphysics (commercial package) software. Various analyses and comparisons are carried out by utilizing the designs in terms of displacement as well as piezo-resistive output due to an increase in mass of CEA adsorbed onto the surface of the cantilever beam, which is stimulated by applying a pressure range of 0 to 0.2 Pa on to the surface of a cantilever beam. A simulation is performed with the proposed designs by experimenting with different materials for better deflection results. Regarding the results obtained, Design 3, made with Kynar710, gives the highest total deflection of 0.7328 m. However, a piezo-resistive readout technique is utilized to get the output in mV, and for that, p-silicon (single-crystal, lightly doped) material is used, respectively. Next, 5V is applied to the terminals of the piezo-resistive circuit. Based on the input applied pressure and output mV, the Design 3 made with Kynar710 gives a better sensitivity of 0.13089 [mV/V/Pa] compared to other designs made with other materials.
