Opis:
Twelve time interval maps were constructed which depict the plate tectonic configuration, paleogeography and general lithofacies. The aim of this paper is to provide the geodynamic evolution and position of the major tectonic elements of the area within the global framework. The Hercynian orogeny was concluded with the collision of Gondwana and Laurussia, whereas the Tethys Ocean formed the embayment between the Eurasian and Gondwanian branches of Pangea. The Mesozoic rifting events resulted in the origin of the oceanic type basins like Meliata and Pieniny along the northern margin of the Tethys. Separation of Eurasia from Gondwana resulted in the formation of the Alboran-Ligurian-Pieniny Ocean as a part of the Pangean breakup tectonic system. During the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the Outer Carpathian rift had developed. Latest Cretaceous-earliest Paleocene was the time of the closure of the Pieniny Ocean. Adria-Alcapa terranes continued their northward movement during Eocene-Early Miocene time. Their oblique collision with the North European plate led to the development of the accretionary wedge of Outer Carpathians and foreland basin. The formation of the West Carpathian thrusts was completed by the Miocene time. The thrust front was still progressing eastwards in the Eastern Carpathians.
Orogeneza hercyńska zakończyła się kolizją Gondwany i Laurusji, a Ocean Tetydy utworzył zatokę pomiędzy dwom a ramionami Tetydy - Gondwaną i Laurazją.

Opis:
Five lithologically different rock samples from the "Niwka" brickyard exposure, including one coal sample, were geochemically characterized as regards their mineral composition and sedimentary organic matter present in them. Various methods, including: X-ray diffraction, solvent extraction, group separation by preparative thin layer chromatography, infra-red spectroscopy for assessment of the content of different functional groups in total rock extracts and their separated polar compound fractions, and capillary gas chromatography for analysis of aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions. It was found that the "Niwka" brickyard rocks are rich in organic material present as the plant detritus (cane-break) or as compounds adsorbed on clay and carbonaceous minerals. Yields of bitumen extraction, group composition of extracts and content of various functional groups assessed by infra-red spectra seem to be related to mineral composition of the host rocks and type of kerogen present. Higher contents of clay minerals, especially chlorite, enriches both extracts and their polar compound fractions in aliphatic structures while the organic matter of both sandstones analysed contains more condensed aromatic structures and functional oxygen groups. Generally the organic matter of the host rocks was deposited in an oxic environment and belongs to type III kerogen with a dominant terrestrial biogenic source or to type II kerogen of bacterial/terrestrial origin of primary biogenic matter. Its thermal maturity stage can be estimated as end-diagenetic or early catagenetic. The highest maturity is shown by the organic matter in the basal sandstone (the S2 sandstone) and probably is caused by imput of older migrating bitumen. Biodegradation of organic matter seems to be influenced by the mineral composition of the host rock, with a high content of clay minerals giving protection.

Stellate patterns, called astrorhizae, occurring in some Paleozoic stromatoporoids are by most authors regarded as integral elements of these enigmatic fossils. The finding of stellate structures on epithecae of rugose corals from the Lower Carboniferous of Central Laos seems to support, however, the idea that astrorhizae in Paleozoic stromatoporoids may represent traces of foreign organisms.

Opis:
The studied area of ca. 500 km2 lies within the Main Anticline and the Bytom-Dąbrowa Trough of the Upper Silesia Coal Basin. During the deposition of the fluvial Zabrze Beds, this area was subject to differential subsidence which resulted in gradual eastward thinning of this unit from ca. 250 m near Zabrze to ca. 4 m near Sosnowiec. Maps of net sandstone and coal contents in two stratigraphical intervals selected within the Zabrze Beds point to the presence of four channel tracts. The main tract is parallel to the NE-SW trending axis of maximum subsidence, and the other three are perpendicular to it. During deposition of the Zabrze Beds the main, NE-SW trending channel tract has shifted westward.

Geological boundaries of the structural stages between Late Variscan Moravian-Silesian-Cracow orogene and Saalian Sławków Graben taphrogene, Early and Late Kimmerian epeirogene, Middle Alpine Silesian-Cracow Monocline, and Late Alpine Carpathian Foredeep are defined as discordances. These structural surfaces of different age, present in the top surface of Carboniferous deposits of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, were investigated in morphotectonic research. Discordances in the morphotectonical record separate older faulted and folded Carboniferous deposits from younger, nearly subhorizontal rocks of epi-Variscan cover. This polychronic and polygenetic geological heterochronous boundary of the top surface of Carboniferous deposit consists of the following coeval discordances: sub-Permian, sub-Triassic, sub-Jurassic, sub-Cretaceous, sub-Miocene and sub-Quaternary. Those buried erosional surfaces with ancient landforms were some formed by terrestrial, others by marine planation. The repeated erosion of Carboniferous deposits and sedimentation of covers as well as fault, monocline and fold-flexure deformations are reflected in differentiated configuration of discordances in the height range from about 400 m a.s.l. to 6000 m b.s.l.

Carboniferous sandstones and shales encountered in deep boreholes drilled in central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., represent a pseudoflysch i.e. they show facies features of flysch and, simultaneously, are of cratonic provenance. Clastic sediments were derived from a peripheral bulge formed within the East European Craton as a result of stresses exerted by the accretion/thrust wedge advancing up the marginal part of the craton. In central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., a Variscan foredeep existed. The foredeep was the depositional site of interfingering exo- and pseudoflysch which, from a geodynamic point of view, are equivalent to an outer molasse. Huge masses of Carboniferous deposits (generally corresponding to flysch) from southwestern and central Poland successively represent, moving from SW to NE, Variscan ortho-, exo- and pseudoflysch.

The Belgian Campine Basin is part of a large paralic north-western coal basin of Carboniferous age, which also extends northwards and eastwards into the Netherlands and Germany. The Westphalian coal-bearing deposits are disconformably covered by Late Palaeozoic or Mesozoic strata and generally show a moderate dip to the north or north-east. An important transpressional fault zone of Palaeozoic age divides the basin into western and eastern sub-basins. During the Carboniferous, syntectonic differences in palaeo-subsidence caused remarkable differences in the burial history and sedimentological styles of these sub-basins and consequently, in their peat and final coal formation, its setting and CBM-potential.Large coal reserves still remain The Belgian Campine Basin is part of a large paralic north-western coal basin of Carboniferous age, which also extends northwards and eastwards into the Netherlands and Germany. The Westphalian coal-bearing deposits are disconformably covered by Late Palaeozoic or Mesozoic strata and generally show a moderate dip to the north or north-east. An important transpressional fault zone of Palaeozoic age divides the basin into western and eastern sub-basins. During the Carboniferous, syntectonic differences in palaeo-subsidence caused remarkable differences in the burial history and sedimentological styles of these sub-basins and consequently, in their peat and final coal formation, its setting and CBM-potential.Large coal reserves still remain in the Campine basin at relatively shallow depths (above 1500 m). Based on the distribution of these coal reserves and their actual rank, an overall CBM-content for the complete basin, as well as for specific anomalous zones within the basin, has been calculated by using an empirically determined (mining) rank / gas relationship. In this manner, six (6) areas have been established in which the gas concentration is significantly (5 times) above a set general threshold value. Together they represent a significant, minimal producible (E)nhanced CBM "target-volume" of about 53 x 109 m3 of methane. The various target areas demand different approaches in any (E)CBM development. In the southern parts of both sub-basins, the remaining changes in porosity/permeability and stress conditions of the rocks, caused by the former mining activities, have to be included into the (E)CBM-development schemes. More towards the north and north-east, any use of preserved coal mining influences is simply not possible. Here, both the sedimentological and structural setting of coals will determine the predominant geologic (E)CBM-development factors.Possibilities for ECBM-production by CO2, N2 or even "raw" flue gases are largely present within or very close to the most prolific CBM-areas. Gas-pipelines and other infrastructure needed for (E)CBM-development are present in the basin, too. The basin is situated within a low to moderately populated part of the country, which is actually rapidly economically expanding. This certifies a steadily increasing gas-consumer market in the next decades.

The revision of shark teeth from the Pennsylvanian black shales of central USA, ascribed to “Phoebodus heslerorum” Williams, 1985 and Symmorium reniforme Cope, 1893, shows that “Ph. heslerorum” is a junior synonym of “Cladodus” divergens Trautschold, 1879. This species belongs neither to Phoebodus nor to Cladodus, so a new genus Heslerodus is proposed. Very common, robust cladodont teeth with a deep labio−basal depression and two buttons, often referred to as S. reniforme, do not belong to the latter species, but to “Cladodus” occidentalis Leidy, 1859. The generic affinity of “C.” occidentalis is yet undetermined, but it is possible that it represents ctenacanthoids.
