Opis:
Six silicified left valves including one nearly complete were obtained from acid residues of two samples collected from the Early Carboniferous Muhua Formation in Guizhou Province, China. The Chinese specimens have reticulate ornament and a large asymmetrical aviculopectinid−type resilifer and are much like Girtypecten from Permian rocks in the United States. However, the Chinese material shows only unicostate radial ornament, whereas Girtypecten is multicostate. Thus, a new taxon Girtypecten (Sinopecten) newelli subgen. et sp. nov. is proposed. The conodont assemblage occurring with G. (Sinopecten) newelli dates the new scallop as Tournaisian (the conodont Lower Siphonodella crenulata Zone); this is the oldest known occurrence of Girtypecten.

Opis:
A new basal sphenacodontid synapsid, represented by an anterior portion of a mandible, demonstrates for the first time the presence of amniotes in the largest European Permo−Carboniferous basin, the Saar−Nahe Basin. The new taxon, Cryptovenator hirschbergeri gen. et sp. nov., is autapomorphic in the extreme shortness and robustness of the lower jaw, with moderate heterodonty, including the absence of a greatly reduced first tooth and only a slight caniniform development of the second and third teeth. Cryptovenatorshares with Dimetrodon, Sphenacodon, and Ctenospondylus, but notably not with Secodontosaurus, enlarged canines and a characteristic teardrop outline of the marginal teeth in lateral view, possession of a deep symphyseal region, and a strongly concave dorsal margin of the dentary. The new find shows that sphenacodontids were present in the Saar−Nahe Basin by the latest Carboniferous, predating the record of sphenacodontid tracks from slightly younger sediments in this region.

Opis:
The fossil record of Paleozoic ophiuroids includes a number of forms which share striking similarities with modern relatives in terms of skeletal morphology. These so called modern-type Paleozoic ophiuroids yield an enormous potential for a better understanding of ophiuroid evolution, yet the scarcity of accurate and sufficiently detailed morphological descriptions available to date precludes any further-reaching assessments. Here, we describe an articulated ophiuroid specimen from the Late Tournaisian (early Carboniferous) of Czatkowice quarry, southern Poland, as a new species Aganaster jagiellonicus sp. nov. The good preservation of the specimen allowed for a morphological analysis at a level comparable to recent ophiuroid descriptions. It shows remarkable morphological similarities with extant former ophio-lepidids Ophiomusium and Ophiosphalma. The new find thus contributes to a solid basis for future investigations on the position of the modern-type Paleozoic ophiuroid in the phylogeny of the class.

Opis:
A new Late Carboniferous cnemidolestodean insect Xixia huban gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Xiaheyan locality (Zhongwei City, Ningxia, China; Tupo Formation). Its combination of character states and observed variants on the wing venations are indicative of homologies shared with more derived members of the order. In particular it is ascertained that MP runs fused with CuA and CuA + CuPa, but is not usually visible as a distinct vein. The new genus exhibits previously unknown coloration pattern composed of dark patches distributed over the whole forewing (as opposed to regular stripes or rows of spots, previously documented in the group). The comparatively abundant sample makes it one of the best documented cnemidolestodeans to date.

The type collection of the lycopsid cone species Triplosporite brownii Unger was re-examined to assess its in situ spores. The cones are monosporangiate with only microspores that possess both cingulum and zona. They equate to the dispersed miospore genus Lycospora and would be identified as Lycospora cf. pseudoannulata. Therefore, the genus Triplosporite Brown is shown to be a junior synonym to Lepidostrobus and a species emendation is given. A comparison is given with the other Lepidostrobus cones which yielded similar in situ microspores of the Lycospora pellucida Group.

Campyloprion Eastman, 1902 is a chondrichthyan having an arched symphyseal tooth whorl similar to that of Helicoprion Karpinsky, 1899, but less tightly coiled. The holotype of Campyloprion annectans Eastman, 1902, the type species of Campyloprion, is of unknown provenance, but is presumed to be from the Pennsylvanian of North America. Campyloprion ivanovi (Karpinsky, 1922) has been described from the Gzhelian of Russia. A partial symphyseal tooth whorl, designated as Campyloprion cf. C. ivanovi, is reported from the Missourian Tinajas Member of the Atrasado Formation of Socorro County, New Mexico, USA. Partial tooth whorls from the Virgilian Finis Shale and Jacksboro Limestone Members of the Graham Formation of northern Texas, USA, are designated as Campyloprion sp. Two partial tooth whorls from the Gzhelian of Russia that were previously referred to C. ivanovi are designated as Campyloprion cf. C. annectans. The age of Toxoprion lecontei (Dean, 1898), from Nevada, USA, is corrected from the Carboniferous to the early Permian. An alternative interpretation of the holotype of T. lecontei is presented, resulting in a reversal of its anterior-to-posterior orientation. The genera Helicoprion, Campyloprion, and Shaktauites Tchuvashov, 2001 can be distinguished by their different spiral angles.

Rhyodacite sheets (the Sady Górne Rhyodacites) in the lowermost part of the Permo-Carboniferous Intra-Sudetic Basin molasse fill have been mapped as intrusives but, later on, based on ambiguous field and petrographic evidence, reinterpreted as lower Carboniferous lavas and tuffs; if so, they would mark the earliest episode of late-orogenic volcanism in the Intra-Sudetic Basin and in the whole Sudetes region in SW Poland. However, re-examination of field relationships and new observations are consistent with an intrusive emplacement of the rhyodacites as conformable to semiconformable, simple to composite sheets. SHRIMP zircon study indicates that the rhyodacites contain rare inherited zircons of ca. 560 Ma, and ca. 470 Ma (or slightly older), and a main population of zircons with an average concordia age of 306.1 š2.8 Ma. This latter age documents the emplacement of the rhyodacites during a mid/late late Carboniferous (Westphalian) stage of volcanism in the Intra-Sudetic Basin in the Central European Variscides. This post-orogenic volcanism was possibly initiated several million years later than previously assumed, and could have comprised a few pulses over a relatively prolonged time span of millions of years.

Wypełniają je paleofluidy o zróżnicowanym składzie i różnej gęstości. Temperatura homogenizacji, która stanowi przybliżenie temperatury zamknięcia fluidu w minerale, wykazuje zmienność związaną z rodzajem spoiwa i z historią geologiczną badanego obszaru.
Characteristics and results of microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions which occur in the cements of sedimentary rocks of the age oscillating form Cambrian to Permian and from Jurassic to Paleogene and Miocene are presented. The inclusions studied are primary and secondary in origin. They display one, two or, less frequently, three phases. The inclusions are filled by the paleofluids of variable compositions and densities. The homogenization temperature, which corresponds to the minimum estimation of the trapping temperature, shows variability in respect to the cement type and geological history of the study area. Salinities of fluids are also variable in respect to the cement type and locality. Wider interpretation of the microthermometric analyses is enabled when they are combined, e.g., with the isotopic studies.

Opis:
Young’s modulus (E) is one of the basic geomechanical parameters used in rock engineering in practice. It is determined based on uniaxial compressive test (UCS). However, according to International Society of Rock Mechanics it can be calculated by three different ways: as the tangent, secant and average modulus. The results from each method are significantly different. The UCS tests was carried out on 237 rock specimens with the slenderness ratio 2 of Carboniferous claystones, mudstones and sandstones. The axial deformation was always measured automatically by the displacement measurement device (LVDT) built into the testing machine and connected to the hydraulic piston. Then the Young’s modulus was calculated for each test by all three methods. The analysis of the results is presented in this paper to show the difference between all the three moduli calculated for each specimen, and to recommend the best method of Young’s modulus determination. First, the typical range of the elastic linear deformability for the chosen rock types was determined as 25-75% of the peak strength at confidence interval 95% for these sedimentary rocks. The modulus value distributions obtained from each calculation method were compared using statistical parameters: mean value, median, minimum, maximum, standard deviation, mean difference at confidence interval 95%, and non-uniformity coefficient. The proportions between average-secant modulus (Eav/Esec) and average-tangent modulus (Eav/Etan) for the rock samples were estimated. For the studied rocks the obtained values were: 1.10-1.32% for Eav/Esec, 1.08-1.25% for Etan/Esec and 1.01-1.06 for Eav/Etan (for Etan with the range of 20-80% of peak strength). These values show low coherence between secant and average modulus (ca. 23% difference) and good consistency of average and tangent modulus. Based on the analysis, tangent Young’s modulus is recommended as the guiding one at the constant range of 30-70% of the ultimate stress. Secant Young’s modulus, as it comprises not only elastic strain but the pore compaction as well, should be named as modulus of deformability. This conclusion was further confirmed by the regression analysis between UCS and E. The highest regression coefficients and the lowest standard error of the regression was obtained for tangent Young’s modulus determination method. In addition, modulus ratio MR for claystones, mudstones and sandstones was studied and determined as 274, 232 and 223 respectively.

Opis:
Mercury geochemistry is emerging recently as a hot topic in chemostratigraphical and facies research, owing to the diagnostic character of Hg enrichments as a proxy of volcanic activity (crucial in the context of assumed causal links between volcanic cataclysms and mass extinctions). Thus, as a prerequisite to such far-reaching interpretations, reliable analytical determinations of Hg concentrations are necessary. In conventionally performed analyses in sedimentary geochemistry, Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is usually applied, as an analytical standard for trace elements, including Hg. However, with a detection limit (DL) of 10 ppb, such measured values have been questioned as a conclusive geochemical indicator of Hg anomalies, and, instead, far more accurate techniques, such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS; DL = 0.2 ppb), are requested. As a preliminary test of this view, we present comparative analysis of 91 samples from three sections encompassing the key Frasnian-Famennian and Famennian-Tournaisian boundary intervals in Morocco (Lahmida), Germany (Kahlleite) and Uzbekistan (Novchomok), for which Hg concentrations were determined by both methods in the same samples. Despite some differences, especially at low Hg concentrations, both analytical methods reveal the same 12 extraordinarily enriched samples in excess of 1 ppm (with one exception, the determination error is <20%), as well as similar overall chemostratigraphic patterns characterized by a few prominent Hg spikes, with a top value of 5.8 ppm. The Hg concentrations determined by ICP-MS and AAS are significantly correlated, as high as r = 0.98 (Novchomok), even if the first method reveals a general tendency toward slightly heightened values (by ~15 to 30% for medians). Therefore, ICP-MS results can conclusively be used in mercury chemostratigraphy in order to recognize extraordinary volcanic (or other) signals, at least in the Devonian geological record. False Hg anomalies were not generated by these conventional ICP-MS determinations.

W pracy zawarto wyniki badania dwóch próbek skrzemieniałego drewna. Próbkę pierwszą pobrano na pustyni w Arabii Saudyjskiej w Al Hawtah, a drugą pobrano na terenie północnych Czech w okolicach Trutnowa. Pierwsza próbka pochodzi z okresu kredowego (formacja z Wasia), a druga jest z okresu karbońskiego. Obydwa okazy poddano obserwacjom makroskopowym oraz mikroskopowym (w świetle przechodzącym i w mikroskopie skaningowym). Przeprowadzono również kilka chemicznych analiz punktowych, a w przypadku próbki pierwszej wykonano analizę rentgenograficzną. W drewnie zmineralizowanym z Arabii Saudyjskiej stwierdzono zanieczyszczenia związkami organicznymi, obecność kalcytu oraz domieszkę minerałów ilastych i kryptokrystaliczny pigment o barwie brunatnej (prawdopodobnie hematyt).
In this study two samples of silicified wood were examined. One sample was found on a desert in Saudi Arabia, and the second one was taken in the Czech Republic. The first sample represents the Cretaceous period (Wasia), and the second one - Carboniferous. Both specimens were subjected to the macroscopic inspection, microscopic analysis (in the transmitted light and the scanning microscope). Some point analyses were also carried out, and in the case of the first sample the X-ray analysis was made. In the mineralised wood from Saudi Arabia polluting with organic compounds was detected, as well as presence of calcite and admixtures of clay minerals, and cryptocrystalline pigment of dark brown colour (probably haematite). The sample from the Czech Republic (an outcrop near Trutnov) is strongly silicified. The quartz and chalcedony observed in it are effects of this process. This allows for a conclusion about the presence of two generations of the silica in the sample. The first, earlier generation is represented by quartz; and the later, second generation of silica is the chalcedony. In the case of this sample concentration of fine-grained pigment of brown-red colour is also visible on surfaces of quartz or chalcedony.

Inconsistency in the approach to the corals included by different authors in the families Tachylasmatidae Grabau, 1928 and Pentaphyllidae Schindewolf, 1942 are discussed in the context of their relationship vs homeomorphy to the Family Plerophyllidae Koker, 1924. Following Schindewolf (1942), the pentaphylloid or cryptophylloid early ontogeny, typical of the former two families, is contrasted with the zaphrentoid ontogeny typical of the latter family. Comprehensive analysis proves the independent taxonomic position of the Suborder Tachylasmatina Fedorowski, 1973. The taxa described herein support this idea. The relationship of the two families: Tachylasmatidae and Pentaphyllidae within the framework of this suborder are suggested. A new genus left in open nomenclature (represented by a single specimen) and three new species, Pentaphyllum sp. nov. 1, ? Pentaphyllum sp. nov. 2 and Gen. et sp. nov. 1 are described from lower Bashkirian deposits.

The Family Neokoninckophyllidae and its type genus Neokoninckophyllum Fomichev, 1939 (type species: N. tanaicum Fomichev, 1939) are discussed and emended. In addition, the genera Orygmophyllum Fomichev, 1953 and Yuanophylloides Fomichev, 1953, originally included in the Families Campophyllidae Wedekind, 1922 and Lophophyllidae Grabau, 1928, respectively, are emended as well and transferred to the Neokoninckophyllidae. Two early Bashkirian species, viz. Yuanophylloides rectus (Vassilyuk in Aizenverg et al., 1983) and Y. inauditus (Moore and Jeffords, 1945), and the Moscovian Neokoninckophyllum sp. nov. are described on the basis of new collections from the Donets Basin. Neokoninckophyllum tanaicum, Yuanophylloides gorskyi Fomichev, 1953 (both Moscovian in age) and Y. cruciformis Fomichev, 1953 (latest Bashkirian), are redescribed on the basis of peels taken from Fomichev’s (1953) type specimens. Derivation of the Family Neokoninckophyllidae from the Subfamily Dibunophyllinae Wang, 1950 is postulated and phylogenetic links within the former are hinted at. The occurrence of Yuanophylloides inauditus in both the Donets Basin and the Western Interior Province of North America points to marine communication between those areas during the Bashkirian. The slightly earlier appearance of the oldest neokoninckophyllids in the Donets Basin, in comparison to North America (i.e., R1 vs R2 ammonoid biozones), documents the common roots and monophyletic development of the Neokoninckophyllidae in both areas.
