Opis:
Health inequalities are being increasingly considered in describing population health and creating health policies. Particular emphasis is put on the so-called social inequalities, however, it is emphasized that they may also be conditioned by biological or environmental factors. The latter type of inequalities is the subject of interest in the present study. The presented research results are a part of wider diagnostic activities that were undertaken within the Onkogranty II project. They include a comparison of data on the epidemiology of cancer caused by low physical activity and poor diet in the province of Silesia and throughout the country.

Opis:
Introduction: A steady increase of the incidence of colorectal cancer has been observed for over 30 years, particularly in well-developed countries. Colorectal cancer is one of the lifestyle-related neoplasms and depends on environmental factors. Aim: Aim of the study was to analyse selected clinical features of colorectal cancer patients. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 577 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer treated in the Department of Clinical Oncology in Bytom in 2006–2014. The patients were included into the study prospectively. The analysis of selected clinical, pathological and anthropometrical parameters was conducted. Results: The study group included 237 women and 341 men aged 26 to 86 years (mean age 64.3 ± 9.2 years). Primary tumours were mostly located in the colon and had histological grade 2. The surgical removal of the primary tumour was performed in 540 patients. 65 patients underwent preoperative radiotherapy, 201 – postoperative chemotherapy and 91 – postoperative radio-chemotherapy. 132 of patients obtained the first-line palliative chemotherapy. 88 of patients did not received oncological treatment. KRAS/RAS mutation were determined in 73 patients and the EGFR expression status in 53 patients. Conclusions: Colorectal cancer patients are a heterogeneous group with differential clinical, pathological and molecular features. 1. Therapeutic management of patients with colorectal cancer largely depends on its location, clinical and pathological stage, patients performance status and comorbidities. 2. Understanding the clinical features of patients with colorectal cancer becomes helpful in designing of screening, which take into account clinical profile of the patient, i.e. age, gender, comorbidities and anthropometric characteristics

Introduction. Breast cancer is the second most prevalent reason for cancer deaths after lung cancer. Incidence rates have increased worldwide. Aim. To present epidemiology of breast cancer in Podkapackie voivodship. Material and methods. This analysis was performed using a systematic literature search. Results. In the Podkarpackie voivodship up until 2014, the incidence rate of female breast cancer was rising and in 2015 it dropped by 68 cases. Even though the survival rate is increasing, it is still one of the leading causes of cancer deaths placing second after lung cancer. Conclusion. Mortality rate, unfortunately, rose gradually. This shows that even though there is a National Health Program aiming at breast cancer awareness and prevention, it is still not enough to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths.

Opis:
Although the widespread of early screening and advanced medical therapies, the breast cancer incidence rate continues to rise among Algerian women. This retrospective study investigated mammary lesions’ epidemiological profile and histopathological characteristics and evaluated primary invasive breast cancer prognostic factors. We found that the incidence of breast cancer increases in middle- aged women between 40 and 60 years. Scarff Bloom Richardson grade II predominates in invasive breast cancer samples. In this study, molecular profiling shows that 82.1% of invasive tumours are hormone receptor-positive. A significant correlation is observed between the age of the patient and the SBR grade (p = 0.001) and with the hormone receptor expression (p = 0.001). In addition, the tumour grade is significantly correlated to oestrogen and progesterone receptor expression (p = 0.000; p = 0.000, respectively). Twenty-two per cent of cases were human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive. The Ki-67 proliferation index is expressed in 91% of breast cancer patients and was significantly associated with Scarff Bloom Richardson grade (p = 0.030), the progesterone receptor expression (p = 0.029) and with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positivity (p = 0.023). Primary breast cancer with a high grade is more frequent (31%) in young women under 40 years old, presenting 17% of our population. In summary, breast cancer patients in Algeria develop an unfavourable profile. Immunohistochemistry assay has played a pivotal role in assessing breast cancer predictive biomarkers improving the tumour behaviour and response to treatment.

Opis:
Bladder cancer is a disease characterized by an abnormal growth of cells in the urinary bladder. Potentially, it can infiltrate nearby tissues and metastasize to distant organs. It affects more than 3 million people, with over 430,000 new cases a year. Environmental risk factors have significant impact on the development of bladder cancer, with tobacco smoke being the single most significant risk factor. Arsenic, nitrates, and chlorine in drinking water are also potentially associated with an elevated risk of this disease. In this paper, we review most significant environmental risk factors for primary bladder cancer and analyze prevention methods.

Opis:
Introduction: Parotid gland neoplasms represent a heterogenous group of tumors, either benign or malignant. The diagnosis and management of parotid gland tumors is complicated by their relative infrequency and their diverse biologic behavior. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, the recurrence rates and the surgical approach employed for parotid gland tumors in Northern Greece. Material and methods: This is a single-center retrospective study. All patients admitted to the ENT department of “G. Papanikolaou” General Hospital of Thessaloniki from January 2012 to June 2019 with the diagnosis of parotid gland tumor were included in the study. Patients with incomplete charts and patients that underwent revision surgeries were excluded. Chi-squared tests were used to assess the associations between variables. Results: A total of 207 patients with a mean age of 54.97 (range 16–91) were included in the study. Benign neoplasms accounted for 87.9% of the cases. Warthin’s tumor was the most common neoplasm encountered, with an incidence of 46.8%, followed by pleomorphic adenoma (31.9%). There was a higher incidence of parotid gland tumors in males and smokers (P = 0.025, P = 0.001 respectively). The majority of the patients were treated with an extracapsular resection (60.4%) or with a partial superficial parotidectomy (22.6%). In 12 cases (5.7%), there was a recurrence of the lesion. The most common complications encountered were facial nerve injury, Frey’s syndrome and hematoma formation. Conclusions: Parotid gland tumors are typically benign, non-aggressive tumors, more frequently seen in men than women. There is a positive association between smoking and parotid gland tumor development. Comprehensive information regarding recurrence and complication rates is presented.

Opis:
Objective: Gynecologic cancers represent a large health, social and economic burden worldwide. In low-income countries, particularly in Mozambique, little data is available and no effective policies are implemented to fight these diseases. Our objective was to trace the epidemiological profile of gynecologic cancers from 2010 to 2014 in Beira, Mozambique. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the registers of the Department of Pathology of Central Hospital of Beira to identify all cases of gynecologic malignancies recorded from January 2010 to December 2014. Results: Most of the diagnosed female cancers (43.4%) were gynecologic and, among these, cervical cancer was definitely the most commonly reported cancer every year, ranging from 86.7% in 2013 to 93.3% in 2014. Conclusion: As in many low-income countries, the access to screening programs for gynecologic cancer is not effective in Mozambique; therefore urgent preventive policies are crucial to address this emergent issue.
Metoda: Autorzy dokonali retrospektywnego przeglądu rejestrów medycznych Oddziału Patologii Szpitala Centralnego w Beirze w celu wyodrębnienia wszystkich przypadków nowotworów kobiecych narządów płciowych odnotowanych w okresie od stycznia 2010 do grudnia 2014 roku.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of the study was the analysis of the epidemiology of laryngeal cancer over 10 years in relation to known risk factors and to assess the current survival rates in this group of patients. Methods: The data were retrospectively collected from patients’ medical records, then entered in the database using dedicated software and a statistical analysis was performed. Results: 512 subjects - 443 men (86.5%) and 69 women (13.5%) were enrolled into the study. The male-to-female ratio was 6.4:1. There were 97.1% smoking women and 98% smoking men, however the history of more than 20 cigarettes per day smoking admitted 81.1 % of women and 94.6% of men. Heavy alcohol consumption was the case in 14 (20.3%) women and in 307 (69.3%) men. For both the size of heavy alcohol consumption and the size of excessive tobacco use, there was found statistically significant difference between women and men with laryngeal cancer (p<0.05). In the majority of male and female subjects, the tumour was located in the supraglottis/glottis area. Apparently this tumour location was much more common among women, accounting for 60.9% of cases , while in men was confirmed in 39.3% of cases. The stages of the laryngeal cancer were similarly of high advancement for both the men and women - stages III and IV were confirmed in 82.6% of women and in 77.6% of men. The over 5-year survival rate was 39.1% among women and 37.2% among men. Conclusions Contradictory to decreased exposure to risk factors and the shorter period for diagnosis, the higher stages of cancer were observed in women. Although in women the advancement was higher and the majority of cases were located in unfavourable supraglottic area, the survival rates were higher. Key words: laryngeal cancer, epidemiology, men and women, risk factors

Opis:
According to the age-period-cohort projection of lung cancer incidence (ICD-10 codes C33-C34), smoking prevention will be crucial for both men and women longevity. Lung cancer remains the main cancer cause of death among males in Poland. In 2014 the number of deaths in Poland caused by lung cancer among men was more than twice as high as for women. The study is focused on identification of attitudes influencing the propensity to smoke, which is performed by structural equation modelling (SEM) based on weighted least squares means and variance adjusted (WLSMV) estimation. Good fit of the presented models is demonstrated by RMSEA, NNFI and CFI values. Reliability of scales is assessed by ordinal alpha and ordinal theta coefficients. Commitment to learning in childhood exhibits the highest standardized effect on propensity to smoke, which is an argument for youth smoking prevention. Structural equation model was estimated for men and women separately because of gender differences in smoking determinants. A strong character, individualism and self-reliance are the factors, which increase smoking propensity among males. These can be treated as features of masculinity and are not statistically important determinants of being a smoker for females. Depressive disorders, being a victim of violence as adults are statistically significant determinants of smoking among women.

Objectives Occupational exposure to asbestos is associated with increased mortality which, however, has not been thoroughly validated in a general population. We have aimed at exploring whether this association may be confirmed within a population-based setting after adjustment for confounders. Furthermore, the impact of tobacco consumption on the association between occupational exposure to asbestos and mortality is assessed. Material and Methods We used data from 2072 (224 exposed) male participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania. Information on exposure to asbestos is based on a selfreport. Median follow-up time was 11.3 years. All-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality of exposed and non-exposed men were compared using mortality rate ratios, Kaplan-Meier analyses and multivariable Cox regression. Results During the follow-up, 52 (23.2%) exposed and 320 (17.3%) non-exposed participants deceased. Exposed subjects had increased hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality (HR=1.48, 95% CI: 1.1–2), benign lung disease mortality (HR=3, 95% CI: 1.18– 7.62) and stomach cancer mortality (HR=4.59, 95% CI: 1.53–13.76). The duration of exposure (per 10 years) was associated with all-cause (HR=1.21, 95% CI: 1.07–1.36) and benign lung disease mortality (HR=1.68, 95% CI: 1.26–2.22). Smokers occupationally exposed to asbestos had the highest risk for all-cause (HR=3.70, 95% CI: 2.19–6.27) and cancer mortality (HR=4.56, 95% CI: 1.99–10.48) as compared to non-asbestos exposed non-smokers. Conclusions Our results confirm associations of occupational exposure to asbestos with all-cause, benign lung disease, and stomach cancer mortality and underline the impact of joint effects of asbestos and smoking on mortality.
