Opis:
For proper growth and development, rhododendrons need acidic soils, whereas calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the substrate markedly limits their growth. In this study, we analysed the reactions of rhododendrons to high concentrations of calcium salts and pH in the substrate. We used 4-month-old seedlings of Rhododendron ‘Cunningham’s White’ and 1.5-year-old seedlings and rooted cuttings of R. ‘Cunningham’s White’ and R. ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum’. Their reactions depended mostly on calcium salt type added to the substrate (sulphate or carbonate). An increase in concentrations of phenolic compounds was detected mostly in roots of the plants grown in a substrate with a high calcium carbonate content. Addition of calcium salts to the substrate caused a significant rise in total nonstructural carbohydrates in leaves and roots of the studied plants. As compared to the control, an increase in substrate pH in the variant with calcium carbonate limited the activity of acid phosphatase, while lowering of substrate pH in the variant with calcium sulphate, significantly increased its activity. Along with the rise in substrate pH, a remarkable increase was observed in the activity of nonspecific dehydrogenase (DHA) in the substrate with CaCO3, as compared to the control. Unfavourable soil conditions (high calcium content and alkaline pH) caused a decrease in assimilation of minerals by the studied plants (mostly phosphorus and manganese). Our results show that the major factor limiting rhododendron growth is an increase in substrate pH, rather than an increase in the concentration of calcium ions.

Opis:
High content of calcium compounds in soil limits cultivation possibilities of the majority of cultivars of rhododendron. In the research presented an attempt was made to determine the influence of a high level of calcium salts CaCl2, CaSO4, Ca(NO3)2 and CaCO3, pH and an increased level of auxins in a medium, on the development of microcuttings of R. ‘Catawbiense Grandiflorum'. On the basis of the results of the research it is justifiable to state that it was the anions of some salts used that had an adverse effect on the development of rhododendron cultures, not calcium cations. Significant differences were noted in the uptake of calcium, magnesium and sodium ions by the microcuttings depending on salts used in the media. The pH value of the medium higher than optimum significantly affected the degree of chlorosis of the microcuttings analyzed. Supplementing the media with additional auxin - IBA was stimulating for the plant growth especially in the medium containing CaCO3.

Opis:
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of higher conductivity of nutrient solution created by nitrate or chloride salts of potassium and calcium on growth characteristics of pepper plants (Capsicum annuum var annuum) during four months of growth period. Two EC5 and EC8 dS/m of Hoagland nutrient solutions were prepared using various salt combinations, namely: KCl + CaCl2, KNO3 + CaNO3, and KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl. Hoagland nutrient solution with EC 1.8 dS/m served as a control. Higher conductivity treatments had different effects on pepper plant growth. The most significant reduction in growth parameters of plant height, shoot fresh weight, fruit yield and nutrients uptake was in plants treated with KCl + CaCl2 particularly at EC8. Application of KNO3 + CaNO3 particularly at EC5, showed no difference as compared to the control regarding many growth parameters. Application of KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 resulted in higher shoot fresh weight compared to the control. All salinity treatments, except from KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5, reduced the fruit yield compared to the control. Treatments of KCl + CaCl2 and KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl particularly at EC8 of nutrient solution, resulted in higher leaf proline concentration, catalase and peroxidase enzymes activity compared to the control. Other conductivity treatments showed no difference in catalase or peroxidase enzymes activities. Significantly the lowest amount of leaf N, K, Mg and Ca was in KCl + CaCl2 at EC8. On the other hand, the highest leaf macronutrient concentrations were in KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 and/or EC8 that showed only higher leaf N and Ca values compared to the control. Leaf micronutrient concentrations were the highest in KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 that generally showed no difference with control plants. However, application of KCl + CaCl2 particularly at EC8 and to less extent KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl at EC8, reduced the leaf micronutrient concentrations. Application of KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 increased and KCl + CaCl2 or KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl at EC8 decreased the leaf Fe concentration compared to control plants.

Opis:
W przypadku soli wapniowych nierozpuszczalnych w wodzie (cytrynian i węglan wapnia) stwierdzono możliwość znaczniejszego podniesienia zawartości wapnia w mleku przerobowym, bez powodowania koagulacji jego białek podczas repasteryzacji. Nawet 5% dodatek tych soli nie powodował destabilizacji białek ani nie następowało ich wytrącenie podczas próby na zagotowanie. Zastosowanie dodatku mieszanki soli wapnia, zawierającej sól wapniową rozpuszczalną w wodzie i sól wapniową nierozpuszczalną w wodzie, umożliwiło wprowadzenia większej ilości wapnia niż w przypadku stosowania pojedynczych soli rozpuszczalnych w wodzie. Jednoczesny dodatek 63 mg% wapnia w postaci cytrynianu wapnia i 20 mg% wapnia w postaci mleczanu umożliwiał podniesienie zawartości wapnia w mleku przerobowym o 83 mg%. Zastosowanie powyższych mieszanek soli nie powodowało koagulacji białek podczas repasteryzacji.
One of the effective ways to increase calcium level in cottage cheese can be the addition of calcium salts to the processing milk prior to its heat treatment (pasteurization). The objective of this investigation was to determine the impact of different calcium salts added on the heat stability and some physicochemical properties of processing milk used to manufacture cottage cheese. It was stated that water-soluble calcium salts added to the processing milk increased its acidity. The milk fortified by this measure showed a decrease in its heat stability, and, furthermore, milk proteins precipitated during its re-pasteurization. The highest quantity of water soluble salts added that did not cause the precipitation of proteins during the re-pasteurization was the addition of 0.15% anhydrous calcium chloride; thanks to this addition, the calcium content in the processing milk was increased by 55 mg%. An additional test for heat stability of milk proteins was carried out and its results indicated that with regard to milk proteins it was safer/more favorable to add 35 mg% of calcium (added in the form of a calcium chloride) or 20 mg% calcium (added in the form of other water-soluble calcium salts). The addition of water-insoluble calcium salts (calcium citrate or calcium carbonate) made it possible to distinctly increase the calcium level in processing milk without the negative effect of precipitating proteins. By adding even 5% of those calcium salts there was caused no decrease in the heat stability, and the protein coagulation during the milk repasteurization did not occur. It was determined that the incorporation of various calcium salts combinations into the processing milk provided higher calcium levels compared with single calcium salts added. When 63 mg% of calcium (in the form of calcium citrate) and 20 mg% of calcium (calcium lactate) were simultaneously added to the processing milk, the milk fortification results were improved (the calcium level rose by 83 mg%) if compared with the effect of adding single water-soluble calcium salts. The application of the mixes of salts as indicated above did not cause the precipitation of proteins.

Opis:
Bacillus licheniformis α-amylase (BLA) was chemically modified using 100-fold molar excess of succinic anhydride over protein or 0.66 M potassium cyanate to obtain 42 % succinylated and 81 % carbamylated BLAs. Size and charge homogeneity of modified preparations was established by Sephacryl S-200 HR gel chromatography and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Conformational alteration in these preparations was evident by the larger Stokes radii (3.40 nm for carbamylated and 3.34 nm for succinylated BLAs) compared to 2.43 nm obtained for native BLA. Urea denaturation results using mean residue ellipticity (MRE) as a probe also showed conformational destabilization based on the early start of transition as well as ΔGDH2O values obtained for both modified derivatives and Ca-depleted BLA. Decrease in ΔGDH2O value from 5,930 cal/mol (for native BLA) to 3,957 cal/mol (for succinylated BLA), 3,336 cal/mol (for carbamylated BLA) and 3,430 cal/mol for Ca-depleted BLA suggested reduced conformational stability upon modification of amino groups of BLA or depletion of calcium. Since both succinylation and carbamylation reactions abolish the positive charge on amino groups (both α- and ε- amino), the decrease in conformational stability can be ascribed to the disruption of salt bridges present in the protein which might have released the intrinsic calcium from its binding site.

To compare the effect of NaCl, CaCl2 and their combinations on germination and early seedling growth stages of Lycopersicum esculentum L., were studied under pot experiments 2008. Results indicated that significant increases were recorded in percentage of germination, seedling fresh and dry weights, seedling length, water content, catalase activity and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophylls as well as carotenoids) under the low level concentration (20 mM) of NaCl or CaCl and their combination (1:1). On other hand increasing salt concentration in nutrient solution caused significant decrease in all of these parameters. The great reduction occurred under high salinity level of NaCl (50 mM). Meanwhile, peroxidase activity increased significantly with increasing salinity levels from 20 mM to 50 mM of both applied salinity types. Besides, peroxidase activity under NaCl salinity showed a marked increase followed by NaCl + CaCl2 (1:1) and CaCl2 at 50 mM.

Opis:
Salt stress is known as one of the most severe abiotic factors limiting the plant production all over the world. In this study, three additives: (i) supplemental Ca (5 mmol L–1) to nutrient solution, (ii) foliar application of micronutrients (Fe, Mn and Zn at 60, 160 and 110 mg L–1, respectively), and (iii) combination of both of them were evaluated aiming to reduce the negative impact of salt stress on tomato plants cultivated in a soilless culture and improve the internal quality of fruits. The obtained results show that salinity reduced vegetative growth and physiological parameters, fruit yield and its components, and even more lowered fruit market classification of tomatoes. Salinity treatment reduced most of essential macro- and micronutrients in tomato fruit, whilst Na content was increased. Tomato productivity and fruit quality were ameliorated under saline conditions by increasing Ca into nutrient solution and applying a foliar application of micronutrients. A combination of both additives ranked the first to alleviate the adverse effects of salinity on tomatoes, followed by solo supplemental Ca into saline nutrient solution. On the other hand, the internal fruit quality of antioxidant compounds, such as vitamin C, lycopene, α-carotene, β-carotene and lutein as well as acidity, total soluble solid and dry matter percent, were increased under saline conditions.

Opis:
The present study aimed to identify the response of melon accessions and cultivars to salt stress in terms of ion exchange, enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation and photosynthetic pigment contents by mixture modelling. In mixture modeling, it is expected that the data set demonstrates a heterogeneous structure. This heterogeneity is characterized as unobservable heterogeneity. The data set’s heterogeneity produces severe deviations in the parameter assessments and the standard deviations. Heterogeneity is overcome when the data set separates itself into homogeneous sub-populations. Mixture modeling was performed using the Mclust mixture cluster program of the statistical software package R 5.2.3. Sub-populations were constructed by evaluating genotypes according to studied traits and correlation analysis was performed using the SPSS software package. The seedlings of 13 melon genotypes were harvested two weeks after salt application (0 mM or 50 mM NaCl) when symptoms of salt stress were observed. Nutrient contents and ratios (K, Ca, Na, K : Na and Ca : Na); superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities malondialdehyde (MDA) chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were measured. Mixture modeling and correlation analysis were used in evaluating the experimental data sets. Differences in responses to salt application were observed among genotypes. While all genotypes exhibited negative responses in terms of K : Na ratio, which is an important parameter of salt tolerance, the smallest decreases in K : Na ratios were observed in the YYU-11 (–57.09%) and YYU-4 (–58.78%) genotypes, indicating them to be the most tolerant to salt stress. In general, enzyme activity decreased in response to salt application, although the responses varied among genotypes, especially with regard to CAT and APX activity. The YYU-29 genotype was notable as the genotype with the highest K : Na ratio (1.79) as well as the smallest change in MDA content under salt stress.

The use of salt to malt ice has definite effects on the environment. Some of these environmental effects are: soil erosion, environmental pollution, changes in mineral nutrition or general destruction of the physiological processes of plants. This use of salt has a negative impact on roadside vegetation and sustainability. The objective of the presented study was to investigate the effects of fulvic and humic organic acids as well as the calcium on growth and chlorophyll content of seven tree species grown under salt stress. Two year old seedlings of – Acer campestre, Aer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala, Ginkgo biloba, Platanus ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' and Tilia cordata were planted to plastic pots (2 dm3 vol). They were planted outdoors in a growing medium compound which had high sphagnum peat, grainy sand and composted pine bark. Salinity stress was maintained by irrigating plants with tap water containing 3.3 g NaCl/L H2O. Different organic fertilizers were used to redce the risk of nutritional stress caused by salinity. Salinity in the growing medium limited the growth of two maple species and littleleaf linden. In other species such A. campestre, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, G. biloba there were no significant differences when compared to the control group of plants. Severe leaf damage was observed on A. paltanoides where leaf burning was seen on up to 30%of the leaf blade surface. The response to salinity of other species like A. pseudoplatanus, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, and T. cordata was less evident. Humic organic acids applied alone to the growing medium improved the growth of all the maple species when compared to the control group. A calcium had the best effect on the growth of all tested trees except A. tataricum ssp. ginnala and G. biloba. The chlorophyll content index (CCI) differed according to the growing medium treatment and the species. The total CCI ranged from 9.62 for the control plants P. ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' to 52.64 for G. biloba which had been treated with a calcium. Application of organic fertilizers to the salt treated growing medium increased the CCI in many species.

W pracy przedstawiono innowacyjne rozwiązanie ocieplania zawilgoconych i zasolonych murów w obiektach zabytkowych.
The paper presents an innovative solution for warming up salt containing and moist walls of historic buildings. In such cases the only possible solution is to insulate the walls from the inside. It was found that the insulation is possible, but only after drying and desalination of the walls. This report also proposes important ways to perform these operations. Restoration plaster system was the optimal choice. Calcium silicate boards were considered the best insulating material, The study presents different thermal insulation options with those boards.
