Purpose: to show differences between public and business organisations within the scope of individualist and collectivist behaviour. Design/Methodology/Approach: the study was carried out among employees of public and business organisations performing various organisational roles. 497 persons participated in the study. It comprised two stages. Stage I was carried out with the use of a structured interview, while in stage II, questionnaire surveys were used. To put the content in order, the semantic field analysis was used, which allowed for separating the main research categories. Individualist and collectivist behaviour is one of many identified organisational types of behaviour. Findings: differences exist between members of public and business organisations as far as behaviour is concerned. In business, individualist behaviour is predominant, while in public organisations – collectivist behaviour. The structure of collectivism is complex and comprises of different types of behavior, i.e.: concordance, conformism and cooperation. In public organisations, concordance is predominant, while in business it is on a lower level. In both types of organisations, cooperation-type behaviour is at a low level. Research Limitations/Implications: inability to fully objectify the research results obtained. Practical Implications: knowledge about the behaviour manifested by the majority of the participants and about the marginalised behaviour allows for a better understanding of the phenomena that take place and in effect conscious management and support for the development of those that an organisation cares about. The structure of behaviour is a carrier of information about motifs guiding the actions of individuals. Separating behaviour that is dominant provides information about the motifs of such behaviour and what affects the behaviour of people – whether it is legitimisation of the value of the organisation and the established standards, or the power of the group. Accurate identification of orientation offers possibilities for predicting behaviour and for more efficient designing and carrying out organisational changes. The third issue is the possibility of using such knowledge during coordination. An organization may influence the behaviour and the engagement of the individual, along with the course and 2 effort put in the performance of processes related to the management of human resources in the 3 organisation. 4 Keywords: individualism, collectivism, public organisation, business organisation where collectivist behaviour is dominant requires different tools for coordination than an organisation where individualist behaviour is dominant. Originality/Value: to supplement theoretical constructs with examples of organisational behaviour manifested in Polish organisations and to show collectivism as a complex dimension as part of which various activities may be performed. Dominance of a specific behaviour shapes the quality of functioning of an individual in an organisation. Whether an individual consciously adopts and accepts organisational norms or acts in line with them under the impact of a group may influence the behaviour and the engagement of the individual, along with the course and effort put in the performance of processes related to the management of human resources in the organisation.

Przedmiot badań: Przedmiotem badań jest samorząd gospodarczy i celowość jego powołania w Polsce na tle wybranych aspektów nowej ekonomii instytucjonalnej. Analiza obejmuje okres po 1989 r., kiedy to w wyniku reformy ustrojowej wprowadzono instytucję samorządu terytorialnego oraz rozwinęły się samorządy zawodowe i organizacje przedsiębiorców, nie doszło jednak do powołania powszechnego samorządu gospodarczego. Cel badawczy: Celem badań jest zweryfikowanie założeń utworzenia obowiązkowego i powszechnego samorządu gospodarczego w Polsce w projektach ustaw opracowanych po 1989 r. oraz ocena potencjalnych korzyści jego utworzenia z wykorzystaniem definicji „instytucji” funkcjonującej w ramach nowej ekonomii instytucjonalnej. Zamierzeniem autorów jest również weryfikacja tezy badawczej mówiącej, iż w warunkach małej świadomości przedsiębiorców, niskiego poziomu kultury samorządności i samodecydowania, rozwiązaniem mogłoby być stworzenie odpowiednich ram legislacyjnych tworzących model powszechnego samorządu gospodarczego odpowiadającego na wyzwania XXI w. Metoda badawcza: W opracowaniu dokonano przeglądu literatury ekonomicznej i prawniczej, wykorzystano metodę dedukcji oraz krytyczną analizę projektów aktów prawnych opracowanych po 1989 r. Wyniki: Wyniki badań projektów ustaw i rozważań w świetle nowej ekonomii instytucjonalnej wskazują na możliwości obniżenia kosztów transakcyjnych, czyli kosztów społecznej koordynacji i kosztów funkcjonowania systemu prawno-ekonomicznego, w wyniku powołania powszechnego samorządu gospodarczego w Polsce.
Background: The research explores the concept of general self-governing business organisations and the purposefulness of its establishment in Poland in the context of selected aspects of new institutional economics. It focuses on the years after 1989 when political reforms contributed to the introduction of a local government system and the development of self-governing organisations of professionals and entrepreneurs, but a general self-governing business organisation was not established. Research purpose: The aim of the research is to identify assumptions of general self-governing business organisation in Poland in the draft laws drawn up after 1989 and to assess its potential benefits from the perspective of new institutional economics’ achievements and the concept of the term “institution”. It also verifies a thesis that because of the limited awareness of entrepreneurs and an underdeveloped culture of self-government and self-determination in Poland, the creation of a legislative framework establishing a model of a general self-governing business organisation addressing the challenges of the 21st c. could be a right solution. Methods: The review of the economic and legal literature, a deductive method, and a critical analysis of draft laws prepared after 1989 are employed. Conclusions: The results of the analysis of draft laws and of deliberations conducted in the context of new institutional economics point to a possibility of reducing transaction costs, i.e., the public cost of coordinating and of the functioning of the legal and economic system, by instituting a general self-governing business organization in Poland.

Research background: The first business support organizations (BSO) appeared in Poland in the 90s of the last century. They were transferred from Western Europe and the United States, where they provided system solutions and played an important role in stimulating innovation activity. However, the latter regions are economically developed, while Poland is playing catch-up. The important question is whether business support organizations will significantly increase the innovative potential of  Polish enterprises. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to probe the impact of business support organizations on innovation activity in Polish industrial companies. It remains to be determined whether enterprises which use BSO services are more likely to engage in innovation activities than enterprises which do not use such services. Methods: To carry out the study, a multi-factor logit regression method was used. In this study, the method allows the determination of the odds ratio for the likely occurrence of innovation activity in companies that used the services of BSOs compared to enterprises that did not do so. The attributes of innovation activity have been singled out in accordance with the international standards of the Oslo methodology. The study was conducted in 2015 for the years 2012?2014 based on a sample of 951 manufacturing companies in the Masovian Voivodeship. Findings & Value added: In the Masovian Voivodeship it is the technological parks and training and consulting centres which have the most advanced degree of influence on the innovation activity of enterprises. The roles of technology incubators, and loan and guarantee funds are also significant. With regard to cooperation on innovation, there is a much better arrangement in sectoral systems, i.e., with suppliers, customers and competitors, than with scientific institutions.

The article is devoted to topical issues of energy saving management of a business organization. The concept and essence of saving are considered. Based on the systematization of the totality of manifestations of saving energy, the following types are distinguished: economic, ecological, ecological-economic, reputation and social. External and internal factors of saving energy in a business organization are identified, which reflect the conditions of its operation in the context of saving energy. It is determined that energy efficiency barriers, which are proposed to be divided into technical-economic, organizational-behavioral and cognitive, characterize the energy saving process in terms of restraining factors in improving the efficiency of fuel and energy resources, reflect specific obstacles within the energy saving process in a particular business organizations and are of an intra-organizational nature. It is determined that to improve energy saving processes in a business organization the use cycles of continuous development, in particular, the Deming cycle is advisable. For the purposes of energy management, the use an appropriate business model that determines the order of formation of the economic advantage of the entity through energy savings and reflects a set of solutions that characterize the process of creating value for stakeholders are advisable.
Artykuł poświęcony jest aktualnym zagadnieniom zarządzania oszczędnością energii w organizacji biznesowej. Uwzględniono koncepcję i istotę oszczędzania. Usystematyzowano występujące sposoby oszczędzania energii i wyróżniono następujące typy: ekonomiczny, ekologiczny, ekologiczno-ekonomiczny, reputacyjny i społeczny. Zidentyfikowano zewnętrzne i wewnętrzne czynniki oszczędzania energii w organizacji biznesowej, które odzwierciedlają uwarunkowania jej działania w tym kontekście. Zaproponowano rozróżnienie barier efektywności energetycznej, hamujących poprawę efektywności wykorzystywania paliw i zasobów energetycznych, na: techniczno-ekonomiczne, organizacyjno-behawioralne i poznawcze, co odzwierciedla konkretne przeszkody w obrębie procesu oszczędzania energii w poszczególnych organizacjach biznesowych. Stwierdzono, że w celu usprawnienia procesów oszczędzania energii w organizacji biznesowej wskazane jest wykorzystanie cyklów ciągłego doskonalenia, w szczególności cyklu Deminga. Na potrzeby zarządzania energią wskazane jest stosowanie odpowiedniego modelu biznesowego, który określa kolejność kształtowania korzyści ekonomicznej podmiotu poprzez oszczędzanie energii i odzwierciedla zestaw rozwiązań charakteryzujących proces tworzenia wartości dla interesariuszy. W celu poprawy efektywności energetycznej zaproponowano oparcie się na sformalizowanym modelu biznesowym efektywności energetycznej organizacji biznesowej oraz zastosowanie programu oszczędzania energii uwzględniającego usunięcie wewnętrznych przeszkód, który stanie się dźwignią dla poprawy efektywności.

Background: Software plays an essential role in enabling digital transformation via digital services added to traditional products or fully digital business offerings. This calls for a better understanding of the relationships between the dynamic nature of business models and their realization using software engineering practices. Aim: In this paper, we synthesize the implications of digitalization on business model flexibility for software-intensive companies based on an extensive literature survey and a longitudinal case study at Ericsson AB. We analyze how software-intensive companies can better synchronize business model changes with software development processes and organizations. Method: We synthesize six propositions based on the literature review and extensive industrial experience with a large software-intensive company working in the telecommunication domain. Conclusions: Our work is designed to facilitate the cross-disciplinary analysis of business model dynamics and business model flexibility by linking value, transaction, and organizational learning to business model change. We believe that software engineering tools and methods can play a crucial role in enabling more automated synchronization between technology and business model changes.

The purpose of the article titled „Spirituality in Management” is to outline the area for a more thorough monograph on the problem of the functioning of the spirituality in the organization. The main research question is focused on the use of the elements of spirituality in the management system and how it will improve the efficiency of human labor in organization. In the article are also provided a conceptual framework issues, some lines of analysis of the problem, which can be used in future studies indicating the major benefits associated with the use of spiritual substance in the management and main threats in this area. The nature of research adopted in the article is presented in a form of exploration, which does not have the obligation to adjudge finally all the issues. The form of exploration seems to be in this particular case the appropriate due to the hard-to-describe and irrational nature of selected thematic area (spirituality) and his reference to the sphere, which has not yet been analyzed very often (organization). In the traditional business analyze, derived from economic and management theory of organizational behavior, attention is paid to the concept of prosperity, as the purpose of organizational human functioning. Interpretations of the concept of welfare proposed in the scientific literature, in many cases, are focused mainly on material prosperity. For this reason, care and activity in terms of spiritual well-being are difficult to observe in the lives of professional individuals. However, the negative effects of the elimination of the spiritual element can significantly affect the efficiency of its operation in both spheres – in professional and in private life. In the words of M. Dziewiecki „The more a person is spiritually poor, much less know how to use the material prosperity”. Man does not take account of the spiritual factor in their functioning in the organization and then the organization exposes itself to lower effects by using of resources, and consequently limit the development – waste is the lack of synergy, added value achievable with appropriate use of resources. Material prosperity without spiritual element may lead the individual to self-restraint, self-destruction. Moreover, mental and spiritual poverty of the unit can cause the poverty of the entire social groups.

Purpose: To better understand the impact of Business Intelligence systems on organizations’ effectiveness. Methodology: Critical and descriptive literature review. Findings: On the basis of numerous case studies described in literature and pertaining to various types of enterprises, different industries and countries, the paper confirms the positive impact of the implementation of Business Intelligence systems on organizations’ effectiveness. Research implications: The paper provides insights that can fuel future in-depth research aimed at the development of objective methods for measuring the impact of the implementation of Business Intelligence systems on organizational effectiveness, as well as further quantitative research. Practical implications: Results of the majority of studies indicate that the implementation of Business Intelligence systems brings tangible benefits to organizations. The implementation should, however, be appropriate and adequate, adjusted to each organization’s resources. Originality: The paper organizes and systematizes knowledge about the impact of BI implementation on organisation’s efficiency.

Modern companies, operating in a dynamically changing environment, are subject to the permanent determinism of the institution. On the other hand, companies are more and more often perceived as complex networks of interpersonal relations in often dispersed organizational structures. Relationships seem to play the role of a link between human activities. The latter, being dependent on the level of his/her opportunism, limited rationality, uncertainty and defined costs of transaction execution within the company, take actions consistent with the company's goal. Man-made activities seem to be more and more often characterised by market transactions concluded within the frames of a company. The whole mechanism of company functioning cohabits under the influence of institutional determinism. Such a context of social and economic reality observed within the frame of the company has become a contribution to the emergence of the question which inspires the author's scientific work within the scope of the new institutional economics. What are the reasons for the existence of various forms of transaction organization and ways of their implementation within the company? The following article is an attempt to answer such a question in the context of the theory of institutions. The presented considerations, through the theoretical meanders of neo-institutionalism, ultimately lead to the localization of institutional determinism, which shapes the way transactions are carried out within the company.

The article investigates the potential of regional initiatives supporting business clusters. It begins with an overview of Michael E. Porter’s concept of clusters and the impact competitive clusters can have on productivity, innovation, and employment. The author also briefly examines the ways clusters might be supported by local government. Next, the trends of outsourcing and offshoring, which influence the growth of business and technology services sector worldwide, are described. The third section focuses on a business services cluster in Kraków, Poland, which is now a key outsourcing destination in Europe. The final section draws on interviews with employees of 15 cluster-based companies conducted between August and December 2016. The goal of this research was better understand Kraków’s strengths and weaknesses as an outsourcing location, gather insights on ways to improve the local business environment, and obtain information about predicted changes in companies’ activities and management over the next few years.

Opis:
Purpose: In this article we focus on the issue of organizational control in its bureaucratic and cultural forms. Methodology: This research uses exploratory case study analysis of Matsushita Konosuke’s management style of in the early years of the Panasonic Corporation. Findings: First of all, we fi nd that despite the impressive body of knowledge accumulated over the years, some questions concerning the relationship between two modes of control and their changes over time still remain unanswered. As a result of case study analysis we put forward an original model illustrating the relationship between bureaucratic and cultural modes of control over stages of the organization life cycle. Research implications and limitations: Implications of the study consist of prescriptions on how to successfully exert control by combining formal and informal measures. Main limitations of the study are related to its generalizability. Originality: Originality of the study results both from putting forward a new theoretical models and using original historical case of Panasonic Corporation.
