    Road construction relies on natural material exploitation and it is necessary to find new ways of reducing its negative environmental impact. Simultaneously, number of tyres placed on Croatian (and world) market is constantly growing and the need for waste tyres management will begin to increase due to the wear and tear of tyres in use at the moment. This paper presents a review of latest international and domestic researches on waste rubber application in road construction with special emphasize on Croatian researches within this topic. Preliminary results of ongoing research on waste rubber application in cement bound mixtures are also presented.

    W zachodniej części piaskowni Łubienica-Superunki, położonej na Wysoczyźnie Ciechanowskiej (północne Mazowsze), stwierdzono występowanie struktur peryglacjalnych, takich jak: inwolucje, bruk peryglacjalny oraz pseudomorfozy po dużych epigenetycznych klinach mrozowych z wypełnieniem lodowo-piaszczystym (ang. composite wegdes). Struktury te wykształcone są w większości bezpośrednio pod współczesną glebą i warstwą piasków pokrywowych o małej miąższości poza jednym z klinów, który występuje w obrębie osadów fluwioglacjalnych w transgresji młodszego stadiału zlodowacenia warty.
    In the western part of the Łubienica-Superunki sand pit, located on the Ciechanowska Upland (northern Mazovia), periglacial structures were observed such as: involutions, periglacial pavement and large epigenetic composite wegde psuedomorphs. The structures occur usually below contemporary topsoil and thin layer of cover sands, besides one frost wedge, which is developed in fluvioglacial sediments from transgression of younger Saalian ice sheet.

    Kamienne nawierzchnie brukowe cechuje powszechne zastosowanie i długa historia. W wielu miastach zachowane fragmenty bruku pozwalają wspomnieć i poczuć ducha dwudziesto- i dziewiętnasto-wiecznych aglomeracji, a szereg wybrukowanych ulic zostało wpisanych do rejestrów zabytków. Nawierzchnie tego typu wykonuje się również obecnie, przede wszystkim w zabytkowych centrach miast.
    Stone surfaces made with setts are widely used and have a long history. In many towns, surviving fragments of such surfaces provide a reminder of and recreate the atmosphere of twentieth- or nineteenthcentury urban scenery, and many such streets have been listed in registers of monuments. Surfaces of this type are also being built at the present time, chiefly in historic town centres.

    Opis:
    Przedstawiono wyniki obserwacji reakcji krów w odniesieniu do prototypowych legowisk, wyłożonych brukiem drewnianym. Krowy słabo akceptują nowe legowiska i bardzo wolno przyzwyczajają się do nich. Użyty bruk drewniany jest materiałem trwałym i w okresie obserwacji nie stwierdzono żadnych jego uszkodzeń. Zastosowanie bruku drewnianego na legowiska dla krów jest opłacalne ekonomicznie i stanowi około połowy kosztów utrzymywania zwierząt na stanowiskach z trocinami.
    The results of the observation of cows' behaviour were presented with reference to two prototype stands which were tiled with the wooden pavement. Cows adapt themselves to the new stands poorly and they are getting used to them very slowly. The wooden pavement that was applied to the stands is a durable material and in the period of observation was not found any damage. The application of the wooden pavement for cows' stands is economically profitable and it is around halves of expenses of the technology of keeping animals on stands with sawdust.

    The article presents the problems of building and maintaining urban transport infrastructure in Warsaw at the turn of the 20th century. The text concerns Kajetan Mościcki (1855-1933), engineer, who was appointed by the acting Mayor of Warsaw, General Sokrates Starynkiewicz, to the position of senior city engineer and head of the municipal construction department, where he worked from 1889 to 1909. During this period, he paved the streets which were worn or damaged by sewerage works with wooden blocks and covered the sidewalks with concrete slabs. He designed the first slip road in the Kingdom of Poland in the form of a spiral, and he also participated in the construction of the oldest road engineering structures made of reinforced concrete, located in Ujazdowski Park and on Karowa street in Warsaw, the first Warsaw power plant and the second city bridge across the Vistula. In addition to his professional activity, Kajetan Mościcki was an inventor in the fields of mechanics and electrical engineering. At the end of his life, he founded an award that the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences was to grant to Polish scientists for outstanding achievements.

    The left-bank Vistula Boulevards dating back to the beginning of the 20th century constitute a valuable testimony of the hydrotechnical construction industry. The idea for the boulevards constructed in the interwar period has come from the 19th century boulevards of Georges Haussmann in Paris and constitutes a unique example of the bold ideas of President Stefan Starzyński. The idea was to connect the city with the river in order to elevate the rank of Warsaw as a European capital. The interwar boulevards were designed according to the contemporary canon of modern architecture and Bronisław Plebiński, an eminent engineer, supervised the construction works. The construction of the boulevards, initiated in the 19th century, was discontinued when World War II broke out. In the post-war period the former boulevards were connected with the abutment and the new staircases of the Śląsko-Dąbrowski bridge. The rebuilding of the retaining walls, destroyed as a result of military activities, was conducted together with the construction of the East-West road (Trasa W-Z), with the use of resources available at that time. The revitalisation designs are somewhat alarming, as they aim to transform the boulevards significantly. The levelling of the slope in order to replace it with a reinforced concrete construction, secondarily paved, seems utterly pointless and destructive. “Bulwary Starzyńskiego” (the boulevards reconstructed by Starzyński) also deserve to be protected and recognised as the testimony of a past epoch. Apart from the modernist and functional architectural form, special attention needs to be paid to the selection of noble materials and the quality of workmanship. The renovation and revitalisation of the boulevards, conducted according to conservation principles, would restore them to their original elegant form. Both the 19th century and the interwar boulevards should be protected by the conservator as monuments of significant historical value, inscribed on the register of monuments.

    The article presents several examples of historical fragments of streets of Poznań in the so-called Upper City with preserved granite gutters, stone pavements with cube dimensions 18 X 20 cm and 10 X 20 cm. Attention was also paid to the presence of setts made of basalt basin, as well as to the roads paved with fieldstone. These increasingly rare fragments of metropolitan streets should be subject to historical and architectural protection. They should be treated as the historic fabric of every city with a long and significant tradition.

    The article describes stone pavements forming the surface of the Old Market Square in Poznań. In the context of postulates of replacement of a historical stone surface with modern paving, the authors took the position that the quality as well as the amount of existing rock material is fully sufficient to carry out its renovation. First and foremost, it should concern the existing granite-gneiss, and more rarely basalt, quartz and porphyry paving stones, as well as granite paving slabs and granite curb stones.

    W artykule przedstawiono historię stosowania w Warszawie od drugiej połowy XIX w. nietypowego materiału do brukowania ulic – żeliwnych płyt ażurowych. Opisano parametry techniczne żeliwnych płyt, przybliżone ich zużycie w różnych okresach czasu oraz sposoby brukowania nimi ulic. Wymieniono także wady tego systemu, które doprowadziły do rezygnacji z jego stosowania.
    The paper presents history of use of not typical material for street paving – open-work cast iron plates, in Warsaw in second part o 19th century. Technical parameters of cast iron plates, approximate wear and tear in various periods and ways of street paving were described. There are also listed system defects which caused to cease using it.

    The article presents the history of the use of wooden paving in Warsaw in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first attempts at wooden elements were described, as well as their wider use since the end of the 19th century. The reasons for not using it later are also given.

    The article presents an outline of the history of the use of unusual material for paving streets - wood - since the beginning of the 19th century. The ways of laying wooden paving and examples of solutions used in different countries are described. The advantages and disadvantages of this method are also given, as well as the size of wooden pavement in different periods and countries.

    Pavements constitute an important aspect of historic urban interiors. In Europe, there exist different policies of protecting this particular element of cities. In some countries, stone and brick pavements, developed in the course of time, are protected by law and preserved (Germany, Austria, The Czech Republic). Not only materials but also patterns are preserved and reconstructed during restoration works (Italy). In other countries, pavements are replaced in structure, material and patterns in accordance with contemporary standards of living (France, Great Britain). In some regions of Poland, the original structure of historic pavements is protected by the relevant legislation. Nevertheless, some pavements - especially in market squares of Polish cities - have been replaced by modern patterns and forms during recent restoration works, which has resulted in some changes in the character of urban interiors.
