Opis:
The paper provides an overview of the shape of the bridge piers, including the Indonesian approach. Universal principles of piers construction are provided, however the construction solutions placed in tropical climate conditions are determined by regional factors, such as considerations of resistance to earthquakes, tsunamis or frequent floods. The exemplary shapes of the pillars in the plan and the ways of their foundation are presented as a result of the analysis of English, Polish and Indonesian language literature. The economic role of bridge is emphasized in the context of Indonesian archipelago, where it constitute a central component of transportation system. The damage to the bridge is becoming particularly severe for the economy of the Indonesian archipelago. Therefore other climate invoke different engineerig problems. Structural solutions, which in a way respond to adverse climatic conditions are mainly using proper reinforcement in the case of piers, the drainage systems with a higher drainage capacity and metal components anti-corrosion treatment. Factors that should be considered in the design of the bridge pier shape, size, and configuration could be variously grouped and presented. From this study, following criteria can be distinguished: stability, location, seismic load, stream pressure, aesthetic, collision risk.

Opis:
Free-surface flow in the vicinity of bridge piers on a fixed channel bed is a classical problem of open-channel hydraulics. This problem is usually analyzed using one-dimensional hydraulic models for steady-flow problems. The aim of this paper is to present a two-dimensional numerical simulation of water flow around obstacles, such as cylinders, which can act as a simplified model of real piers. The depth-averaged Navier-Stokes equations describing unsteady free-surface flow are solved using an explicit scheme of the finite-volume method. The numerical solution prepared for the simulations of unsteady free-surface flows was used here to analyze the case of steady flow. A numerical simulation of flow in the channel with the obstruction was performed for two different inflow discharges determining, respectively, the subcritical and supercritical flow in the cross-section of a channel constriction. In the second simulation, a hydraulic jump was observed downstream of the bridge section. The numerical results were compared with measurements. Water surface profiles were measured for both discharges in the hydraulic laboratory of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology (GUT). Comparisons with laboratory data showed that the proposed approach constitutes a sufficiently accurate and reliable technique for predicting basic flow parameters. The method of two-dimensional modeling of flow in a river channel between bridge piers can be also integrated with the simulation of unsteady flood wave propagation, ensuring a uniform approach to the problem of flood modeling in river valleys. Moreover, a two-dimensional simulation yields detailed information about flow structure near the obstruction, which can be used to better elucidate debris transport and river bed deformation processes.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to compare the risk of flooding areas upstream from a bridge without piers and a deck supported only on abutments, with a bridge of the same width with a deck supported on abutments and piers. The additional goal of this paper is to analyze the influence of the width and shape of piers on the risk of flooding. The paper begins with the formulation of performance function used in reliability analysis. Then, after the short characteristic of the methods of this analysis, one of them - the advanced first-order second-moments (AFOSM) method chosen for solution of the problem resulting from objectives of the paper - is presented. The largest part of the paper contains the solution of this problem for an exemplary bridge. After the description of this bridge two models used for computation of hydraulic losses, which are required for determination of the performance function, are characterized. The first is based on an energy equation (the standard step method) and used for a bridge without piers, the second one applied for computation of losses in the inner section of a bridge with piers is based on momentum equation. The solution of the problem was based on computer simulations performed for the compared variants of bridge projects. The computations results were presented graphically in the form of risk curves showing the relations between the return period defined as the reciprocal of risk and stage of water upstream from a bridge. It was found that the reduction of a return period due to: application of piers for support of bridge deck (as an alternative to its support on abutments alone), an extension of piers by 100% or replacing a favourable hydraulical shape (elliptical) of piers by an unfavourable one (with a square nose), is comparable and for considered bridge oscillates around 70% of the initial return period.
