Artykuł stanowi próbę przedstawienia działalności hodowlanej Kazimierza Piaszczyńskiego, współwłaściciela majątku Snopków pod Lublinem. W dziedzinie wychowu zarodowego koni i trzody chlewnej był on kontynuatorem prac prowadzonych przez teścia Antoniego Bobrowskiego, który zmarł w 1895 roku, a sam zajął się z czasem hodowlą owiec karakułów. Na przełomie stuleci Snopków słynął ze znakomitej stadniny kareciano-zaprzęgowej i wierzchowej, uznaniem cieszyły się również tamtejsze konie remontowe. W Królestwie Polskim i Rosji mocną pozycję utrzymała także chlewnia, której rozgłos ugruntował wychów rasowych świń angielskich. Piaszczyński, podobnie jak teść, cieszył się wśród współczesnych opinią znakomitego specjalisty, czego dowodem były liczne nagrody zdobywane na wystawach hodowlanych oraz utrzymujący się na wyrównanym poziomie popyt na tamtejsze zwierzęta. Wyraźnie zarysowaną cezurę postawił przed Snopkowem rok 1914 – wybuch I wojny światowej zamknął okres największych sukcesów Piaszczyńskiego, a kolejne lata przyniosły niepowetowane straty w stadninie i chlewni. Biorąc powyższe pod uwagę, sądzę, że warto przypomnieć szerszemu gronu Czytelników postać i dokonania człowieka, który na trwałe zapisał się w historii rodzimej hodowli żywego inwentarza.
The article is an attempt to present the breeding activity of Kazimierz Piaszczyński, co-owner of the Snopków estate near Lublin. In the field of breeding horses and pigs, he continued the work carried out by his father-in-law, Antoni Bobrowski, who died in 1895, and he himself took up the breeding of Karakul sheep. At the turn of the century, Snopków was famous for its excellent horse-drawn carriage and riding stables, and repair horses were also appreciated. In the Kingdom of Poland and Russia, a pig farm also maintained its strong position, the fame of which was established by the breeding of pedigree English pigs. Piaszczyński, like his father-in-law, enjoyed the opinion of an excellent specialist among his contemporaries, as evidenced by numerous awards won at breeding exhibitions and the demand for local animals that remained at an even level. The year 1914 put a clearly outlined turning point for Snopków – the outbreak of World War I closed the period of Piaszczyński’s greatest successes, and the following years brought irreparable losses to the stud and the pigsty. Considering the above, I think it is worth reminding a wider group of readers the character and achievements of a man who has permanently entered the history of domestic livestock breeding.

Opis:
Indian jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana Lamk.) is mostly cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Many native and exotic jujube cultivars are grown for fruit production in Pakistan. However, little research work has been conducted on various aspects of jujube i.e. morphological and biochemical characterization of available germplasm. Therefore, fruits of thirteen genotypes were collected to study the biodiversity through physico-chemical analysis during the years 2015 and 2016. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship among various physico-chemical attributes of the jujube through Pearson’s correlation that may have greater importance for breeders during the selection of desirable genotype. The cultivar Foladi had the maximum fruit weight (30.49 g), pulp weight (28.42 g) and fruit diameter (36.75 mm) among all the cultivars. The maximum fruit length was recorded in Umran-13 (45.16 mm), while the maximum seed weight (2.70 g) was found in Dilbahar. Khobani had the maximum TSS (14.92 ºBrix). The highest level of acidity (0.74%) was recorded in Gorh. Akasha had highest vitamin C content (72.53 mg 100 mL–1 juice). The cultivars Sadqia, Umran-13, Mehmood wali, Yazman local and Gorh were much sweeter due to the maximum total sugars content (9.74–10.09%). The maximum antioxidant capacity was measured in Mahmood wali (616.13 mM Trolox 100 mL–1), Pak white (615.02 mM Trolox 100 mL–1) and Seedless (600.46 mM Trolox 100 mL–1), while antioxidant activity was significantly higher in Sadqia (40.604%). The maximum amount of total phenolic content was determined in Umran-13 and Sadqia (243.06 and 239.25 µg GAE mL–1 juice, respectively). The highly significant correlation (0.99) was observed between the fruit weight and pulp weight. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content were also strongly correlated (0.70). Principal component analysis was made to determine the relationship among the genotypes and their variables. Dendrogram constructed on the basis of morphological attributes, divided 13 genotypes into four main clusters. Among the cultivars, Khobani and Mehmood wali share the maximum similarity (78%). Biochemical characteristics also divided the genotypes into three main clusters. The cultivars Pak white and Seedless had the maximum similarity (75%) among all the cultivars.

Thyroid hormones (THs) are obligatory for transition from breeding season to anestrus in sheep. In this process, THs act during a very limited time of the year and primarily within the brain. In ewes chronically equipped for sampling cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the third ventricle, we have characterized the concentrations of total and free thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and total reverse T3 (rT3) in the CSF during breeding season, anestrus and during a critical period required for transition to anestrus (December-March). The total T4, T3, rT3 and free T3 average concentrations (± SEM) in CSF were 1.5 ± 0.07 ng/ml, 14.5 ± 1.2 pg/ml, 43 ± 7.4 pg/ml, and 0.6 ± 0.05 pg/ml, respectively, and all were significantly lower (p < 0.001) than in blood plasma except free T4 (12.6 ± 1.1 pg/ml), which was similar to that in plasma. There was a seasonal trend (p < 0.05) in the concentration of total T3 (highest in December) and free T4 (highest in November) in the CSF that does not follow that in blood plasma. During the period of transition to anestrus the CSF total T3/TT4 molar ratio and free T3/ T4 ratio were significantly lower (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively) than in blood plasma, while the total rT3/T4 ratio was significantly higher (p < 0.01) at the end of this period (March). Additionally, the CSF total rT3 concentrations were also significantly correlated with the CSF total T4 levels (r = 0.57; p < 0.05). In conclusion, the CSF in sheep may serve as a considerable source of thyroid hormones for neuroendocrine events. The lack of significant changes in THs concentrations in the CSF during the period of transition to anestrus indicate that neither seasonal changes of THs circulating in the blood plasma nor THs circulating in the CSF actively drive the transition to anestrus.

Single and double-gene Rhtl, Rht2, Rht3, Rht1 + Rht2 and Rht3 + Rht2 isogenic lines of wheat in four parental rht varieties were grown in drilled yield trials at four sites in 1989. The same lines were also grown in 1988 together with hybrid genotypes from CHA (chemical hybridising agent) F₁ production plots. In the inbred lines shorter than one metre, Rht alleles reduced total shoot biomass by shortening the straw; mass of straw per unit plant height was unaffected. Highest grain yield was obtained from plant heights between 70 and 100 cm. The Rht genotype achieving this stature varied according to parent varietal height. The hybrids grown allowed comparisons between intra- and inter-varietal crosses over a range of Rht genotypes. In F₁ hybrids positive heterosis was observed for plant height, grain yield and mean grain weight. Highest yields were obtained from inter-varietal hybrids carrying one, two or three doses of Rht1 or Rht2 or one dose of Rht3. An Rht3lrht hybrid showed resistance to premature α-amylase production during grain ripening.
