Kazakh traditional wisdom says “Kaytyp kelgen kyz zhaman” - a girl who returns to her parental home after marriage is a disgrace to the family. According to a women’s rights organization, up to 5,000 bride kidnapping acts occur annually in contemporary Kazakhstan. The authors would like to approach this socio-cultural phenomenon through considering the current situation of women and their rights in Kazakhstan. The article examines how outdated traditions and customs violate women’s’ personal boundaries and rights in Kazakhstan. Its main purpose is to attract the attention of the reader and potential researcher and to familiarize them with the topic (a specific form of violence against women), research methods, and research challenges. Until September 2019, there was no special legislation in Kazakhstan aimed at combating domestic violence. However, with the adoption of the Law “On the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence” in September 2019, Kazakhstan introduced institutional measures to prevent and punish domestic violence. Nevertheless, people continue to follow their traditional customs, rather than live in accordance with new legislation.

Tematem artykułu jest problem przynależności rasowej i związanych z nią niejednoznaczności w powieści Philipa Rotha pt. Ludzka skaza. Bohaterem książki jest czarnoskóry Coleman Silk, którego jasna karnacja pozwala mu na podawanie się za białego człowieka. Odwołując się do książki Toni Morrison pt. Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination, autorka pokazuje w jaki sposób wyparta przez bohatera przynależność rasowa powraca jako trudne do udźwignięcia brzemię, oraz w jaki sposób problem rasy staje się metaforą społecznych i ekonomicznych podziałów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Artykuł dowodzi także, że jednym z głównych tematów powieści Rotha jest niepokój związany z faktem, że granice rasowe w istocie nie istnieją, a hegemonia białego człowieka zawsze oparta była na iluzji.
The article explores the problem of race and racial ambiguity in Philip Roth’s The Human Stain (2000). Referring to Toni Morrison’s Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination and her assumptions concerning “the Africanist presence,” the paper discusses how the character’s repressed African-American past returns to haunt not only the protagonist but also the reader. As biracial Coleman Silk succeeds in passing for a Jew, his body becomes a signifier whose signified turns out to be problematic. While Roth’s narrative argues that the ideal of a self-made man that the protagonist represents is always already haunted by the ghost of racial uncertainty, it also demonstrates that the issue of race functions in contemporary writing primarily as a metaphor, or “a way of referring to and disguising forces, events, classes, and expressions of social decay and economic division far more threatening to the body politic than biological ‘race’ ever was.” Finally, the paper explores the way in which Roth’s novel addresses the long familiar fear that racial boundaries do not exist and the coherent white American self is an illusion.

This article presents a methodology for the synthesis of finite-dimensional nonlinear output feedback controllers for nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) systems with time-dependent spatial domains. Initially, the nonlinear parabolic PDE system is expressed with respect to an appropriate time-invariant spatial coordinate, and a representative (with respect to different initial conditions and input perturbations) ensemble of solutions of the resulting time-varying PDE system is constructed by computing and solving a high-order discretization of the PDE. Then, the Karhunen-Loeve expansion is directly applied to the ensemble of solutions to derive a small set of empirical eigenfunctions (dominant spatial patterns) that capture almost all the energy of the ensemble of solutions. The empirical eigenfunctions are subsequently used as basis functions within a Galerkin model reduction framework to derive low-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) systems that accurately describe the dominant dynamics of the PDE system. The ODE systems are subsequently used for the synthesis of nonlinear output feedback controllers using geometric control methods. The proposed control method is used to stabilize an unstable steady-state of a diffusion-reaction process with nonlinearities, spatially-varying coefficients and time-dependent spatial domain, and is shown to lead to the construction of accurate low-order models and the synthesis of low-order controllers. The performance of the low-order models and controllers is successfully tested through computer simulations.

The article presents a philosophical conceptualization of multilingualism. Philosophy’s general task is to subject human experience to reflective scrutiny and the experience of present day society has changed drastically. Multilingualism, as the vehicle of a new linguistic dispensation, plays a central role in it. We apply the metaphor ‘edge’ to explore the way multiple languages are deployed in, and intensively shape, the postmodern world. We also demonstrate how multilingualism is an edge, not only metaphorically, but involving true and real boundaries of various kinds, and all of them are essential for its nature.

Hardly any problem in contemporary theological-moral discourse causes such turbulence as the searching, reflection, and demarcation of the boundaries between good and evil in human acting. A fundamental problem is a criterion or a reference point according to which a person could reliably determine what is good and evil. Divergent theological views in the theological-moral dimension seem to have caused the clear boundaries between good and evil to disappear. Therefore, the crucial question is whether there is still a universal criterion for theological evaluation of a human act, as the situation in theological-moral discourse resembles an areopagus of opinions that have no common point in distinguishing between good and evil. This reflection examines the possibility if the Thomistic ethical analysis of a human act, together with the principle of double effect, may be a reference point for the demarcation of these boundaries.

The paper reports on a study designed to examine the relationship between the thickness of ego boundaries and attainments in FL pronunciation after a clearly structured form-focused practical course of phonetics. The research involved 45 first-year students of the Institute of English Studies in Wroclaw, Poland, who had attended around thirty 90-minute classes in phonetics. To measure the thickness of their ego boundaries, the Hartmann Boundary Questionnaire (HBQ) was administered. This permitted an examination of which particular types of ego boundaries are related to accuracy in foreign language (FL) pronunciation. The basis for comparing the pronunciation levels of the participants was the Pronunciation Attainment Test consisting of three parts: reading a passage and two vocabulary lists. Attest demonstrated that the differences between the pronunciation levels of the thick and thin ego boundary learners were nonsignificant. However, further statistical analysis (Pearson correlation) showed a positive weak correlation between 3 types of boundaries (represented by Categories 7, 8 and 12 of the HBQ) and attainments in pronunciation. More specifically, the less organized the direct environment (e.g., the working place) of the subjects was and the more preference the participants showed for perceiving and accepting blurred borders between constructs, the better their pronunciation was. A closer look at particular students revealed the importance of boundaries between thoughts and feelings, and boundaries related to defensive mechanisms and to sensitivity in FL pronunciation learning.

This paper is an analytical, comparative study between James Clavell's 1975 novel, Shōgun, and the 2024 mini-series adaptation created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks under the same name. It investigates the adaptation's artful methods of storytelling and the crucial decisions made by the showrunners throughout its production. Their aetmpt to polish the rich original story written by Clavell represents an important showcase for all modern adaptations that aspire to bring new ideas into classical narratives. As the novel had been known for its tendency to divulge into, long explanatory segments about the cultural and inner workings of Japan through abundant descriptions told by an omniscient narrator and through the use of inner monologues, the TV series is left to face the challenge of fitng all of the cultural guidelines and abstract thoughts onto a diefrent frame. To compensate for its bound lacklustre textual expression, the producers are forced to cross the novelistic boundaries of the book by focusing their eofrts on the great visual potential that the story could oefr. In this research, I will explore the decisions that carried the show throughout its episodes by relying on the structural theories of adaptation and the various socio-cultural opinions of scholars and critics, which revolve around the representation of Japanese culture by Western artists. My research mainly aims to assess the level of collaboration the two art mediums are able to achieve, both thematically and culturally, in their overall contribution to the story.

Opis:
Flowing waters, especially big rivers, influence their entire environment. Yet, for surveyors the most important are these changes caused by rivers, through changes in their beds, which can alternate cadastral data. The discussed problems result directly from both the damaging and constructive features of rivers and also from Water Law and other regulations which provide the fonundation for establishing grounds and building registers. This paper contains partly a comparison between former situation presented on archive maps and concerning sections of the Vistula River, west of Cracow and the contemporary situation. The purpose of this comparison is to draw the reader’s attention to the important problem of updating cadastral maps, made in surrounding of accumulative-erosion activity of river.
Wody płynące, w szczególności duże rzeki, oddziaływają na całe swoje otoczenie. Dla wykonawców geodezyjnych najważniejsze są jednak zmiany kształtu koryta rzek pociągające za sobą konieczność modyfikacji w katastrze nieruchomości. Poruszana problematyka wynika bezpośrednio z właściwości niszczących i konstruktywnych rzek oraz zapisów prawa wodnego i aktów normatywnych, na podstawie których tworzona jest ewidencja gruntów i budynków. Publikacja zawiera częściowe porównanie archiwalnych materiałów kartograficznych dotyczących odcinka Wisły na zachód od Krakowa z obecną sytuacją terenową i ma na celu zasygnalizowanie problemu, jakim jest zapewnienie aktualności map zakładanych i prowadzonych w obrębie akumulacyjno-erozyjnej działalności cieków wodnych.

The problem of boundaries determination for real estate subdivision, in possible wide aspects, is the subject of the paper. Real estate boundaries is one of the most important problems in Poland, nowadays. The prices of real estate and values of supplements depend, among others, on area of real estate. Area of real estate, in turn, is calculated on the basis of real estate boundaries. The more accurate boundaries of real estate the better determined the value of real estate price and the quantity of supplement for agricultural production. The problem of real estate boundaries is clear visible while subdivision process, where one real estate is to be divided on two or more smaller pieces. This process needs former determined outer boundaries of real estate and moreover produces new boundaries. There are two kinds of real estate boundaries, describing real estate being a single parcel. The former is real estate boundary according to factual status of parcel boundary in the field, the latter is real estate boundary according to legal status of boundary. Real estate boundary in accordance with factual status was determined on the ground by surveyor many years ago, while establishing grounds register. Legal boundaries, in turn, are very useful and suitable for all purposes connected with real estate. Problem of subdivision is complicated. The one of most important surveyor’s work is acceptance of outer real estate boundaries, before procedure of subdivision is made. It is troublesome sometimes but crucial subdivision activity.
Tematem artykułu jest problem określenia granic nieruchomości przy jej podziale. Granice nieruchomości to obecnie jeden z najważniejszych problemów w Polsce. Ceny nieruchomości oraz wielkości dopłat zależą między innymi od powierzchni nieruchomości. Powierzchnia nieruchomości z kolei jest obliczana na podstawie granic nieruchomości. Im bardziej dokładne granice nieruchomości, tym lepiej określona wartość nieruchomości i wielkość dopłat do produkcji rolnej. Problem granic nieruchomości jest wyraźnie widoczny podczas procesu jej podziału, gdy jedna nieruchomość jest dzielona na dwie lub więcej części. Ten proces wymaga wcześniejszego określenia granic zewnętrznych, a ponadto jego efektem są nowe granice. Są dwa rodzaje granic nieruchomości opisujących nieruchomość będącą pojedynczą działką. Pierwszą są granice nieruchomości zgodne ze stanem faktycznym granic w terenie, drugą – granice nieruchomości zgodne ze stanem prawnym granic. Granice nieruchomości zgodne ze stanem faktycznym były określane na gruncie wiele lat temu, kiedy zakładano ewidencję gruntów. Granice prawne z kolei są bardzo użyteczne i stosowne do wielu celów związanych z nieruchomościami. Problem podziału jest złożony. Jedną z najważniejszych prac geodezyjnych przed podziałem nieruchomości jest przyjęcie granic zewnętrznych dzielonej nieruchomości. Jest to niekiedy kłopotliwa, ale zasadnicza czynność podziału nieruchomości.

Opis:
Preparing detailed maps for projects is the most often made survey. It results from quick development of real estate market, prosperity in buildings branch and connected with it big demands for maps by clients. Preparing map for project is seemingly simple and easy task. It brings about that many surveyors are not fully conscious consequences which can result within investment process (including stopping of building site), when on the map for project are put real estate boundaries not consistent with cadastral data. Thus, methods preventing such cases, have been shown in the paper. There also basis of mapping boundaries on the map for project, being under preparing. So, the paper is a trial towards describing real estate boundary on maps for project. The main attention has been focused on the stage of creating map and inserting on it cadastral data. It has also been remarked that in some cases other surveys must be performed, before final process of completing map for project had been made. It has also been emphasized that on maps for project, only real estate legal boundaries should be mapping.
Sporządzanie map sytuacyjno-wysokościowych do celów projektowych to najczęściej wykonywane prace geodezyjne. Wynika to z szybkiego rozwoju rynku nieruchomości, z ożywienia w sektorze budowlanym i związanego z tym dużym zapotrzebowaniem zleceniodawców na mapy. Wykonanie mapy do celów projektowych to z pozoru proste zadanie. Wielu geodetów nie jest do końca świadomych tego, jakie problemy mogą się pojawić w procesie inwestycyjnym (włącznie ze wstrzymaniem budowy), kiedy granice nieruchomości na mapie do celów projektowych będą niezgodne z danymi z ewidencji gruntów i budynków. W artykule przedstawiono metody postępowania zapobiegające takim przypadkom. Omówiono także podstawy wrysowywania granic na powstającą mapę. W artykule została zatem podjęta próba opisania granic nieruchomości na mapach do celów projektowych. Najwięcej uwagi poświęcono etapowi tworzenia mapy i uwzględniania na niej danych ewidencyjnych. Zauważono także, że w niektórych przypadkach mogą być konieczne inne prace geodezyjne, poprzedzające ostateczny proces tworzenia mapy. Podkreślono, że na mapach do celów projektowych powinny być wyrysowane jedynie granice prawne nieruchomości.

Opis:
International boundaries, their history, location, disputes concerning their exact delimitation, their strategically importance, and other facts led many scholars to deal with that important subject. International lawyers, geographers, historians, political scientists, researchers of international relations, cartographers, military people, all are concerned with the location of a boundary, its legal status, its history, its defensible ability and so on. However, the influence of the international boundaries upon the landscape where they run has not received the attention to its merits. This article will present some areas of this kind, where a political boundary brought changes to the landscape on both sides of it. The boundary between Israel and Egypt will be the case study, although some other areas will be presented.
Granice międzynarodowe, ich historia, położenie, spory dotyczące ich dokładnego wytyczenia, ich strategiczne znaczenie i inne fakty są tematem zainteresowań wielu badaczy. Należą do nich prawnicy międzynarodowi, geografowie, historycy, politolodzy, badacze stosunków międzynarodowych, kartografowie, wojskowi. Zajmują się oni problemami granicy w różnych aspektach: jej położenia, statusu prawnego, historii, znaczenia w obronności kraju itd. Jednakże wpływ granic międzynarodowych na kształtowanie się krajobrazu nie znalazł większego zainteresowania wśród badaczy. W artykule przedstawiono kilka przykładów wyznaczenia granicy politycznej, które przyniosło zmiany krajobrazu po obu jej stronach. Jako studium przypadku omówiono granicę między Izraelem i Egiptem.

It seems that our world is made of mainly nation states - independent states based on one particular nation, sometimes with some minorities in that state. Thus the model seams to be ‘a nation is establishing its boundaries’. On the other hand, our world also has the ‘boundaries that made a nation’ model, in which a nation was created after boundaries were drawn. Most independent European countries belong to the first model but Spain, Belgium, and five tiny states belong to the second model.
