Opis:
The Book of Wisdom, which was written on the eve of the New Testament, enriches significantly the Old Testament teaching about God’s payment. In the very heart of the eschatological part (chapters 3-4) it presents three situations, which at first glance seem to question God’s justice (the suffering of the just one, lack of offspring, premature death). The analized text (1-9,5, 15-16) is the most important expression of the awareness of afterlife gained by the Israel in the late period of the Old Testament and the most powerful evidence of that belief.

Opis:
The main purpose of the article is to carry out a research concerningthe use of Greek words καθαρός (pure, clean) and καθαρότης (purity, cleanness)in one passage from the Book of Wisdom, namely Wis 7:22-28, andto find a solution to the observed paradox: purity beeing the condition and,at the same time, the result of man’s contact with Wisdom. Several researchquestions are posed, such as: Is it possible to associate the first use of theword with steam καθαρ (καθαρός; in v. 23) with man, or the author of theBook of Wisdom has in mind only immaterial beings? What is the relationbetween the purity of Wisdom in verse 24 and that from the previous verse? Can we interpret the text of the pericope 7,22-28 as follows: the Wisdomshares its ontological/moral purity with man? According to the author ofthe article, the answers to these questions may have a meaningful impacton the understanding of the theological thought of the Old as well as theNew Testament. The method used consists, in the first place, in the analysis of the meaningof the discussed words (καθαρός; καθαρότης) in the most importantGreek dictionaries/lexicons of classic Greek literature and Old/New Testamenttheology. Then, the focus shifts to the text of Wis 7:22-28 itself inits biblical context and synchronic analysis in which the text is studied inits final form is presented. The research leads to describing a contradiction concerning the purityof a man: being pure seems to be man’s condition for acquiring Wisdom, and, at the same time, man’s purity is the result of her acquisition. Theproposed solution to this contradiction, or paradox, consists in the a prioriinfluence of Wisdom on man, which does not relieve him from the effortto keep the state of purity.

Opis:
The double use of the word with the καθαρ root in the text of Wis 7:22–28 may set the interpretative direction for the discussion of the whole pericope. The exegesis of the pericope in the key of purity shows the following possibility of understanding the text: the moral aspect of purity of Wisdom can be imparted by it to pure people. A contradiction (paradox) in the text which concerns the subject of purity is observed: purity is, on the one hand, a condition, on the other, an effect of Wisdom’s imparting action. A look at the further context of pericope Wis 7:22–28 (in particular Wis 9 and Wis 10) can lead to a probable solution to this potential contradiction: it lies in the idea of being elected by God, which anticipates human action.

The aim of the article is to investigate the contemporary relativism of values and norms from the biblical perspective. By means of biblical philosophy; we try to compare the situation of a post-modern Christian and the followers of ancient Judaism when they met with Hellenistic culture. The subject of our reflection are fragments of Ecclesiastes and the Book of Wisdom. The first chapter contains a discussion of post-modern and Hellenistic culture. The second contains an outline of the history of Israel in the Hellenistic era. The third point is the exegesis of selected passages of Ecclesiastes and the Book of Wisdom. The ending is an attempt to update the attitudes of biblical authors towards Hellenism in the context of postmodern Christianity.

Opis:
To be a scribe and a sage was an ideal for men of Israel who desired to approach God and participate in his wisdom. Was it possible for everybody? The article presents, in a synthetic way, the identity of the sage as described in the Book of Sirach. The calling of the sage implies a long and hard process of formation and growth, which continues until the end of his life. This calling, while requiring preparation and effort, must not be reduced to one of many – perhaps a bit more prestigious – professions and jobs. In his Book, Sirach shares with the reader his personal experience of acquiring wisdom and “becoming” a sage. He points at hard beginnings, at enjoyment of the fruit of his efforts, and finally at the necessity for sharing his acquired and received wisdom. It is only after the sage shares his wisdom with his disciples that he achieves the fullness of his identity. He then becomes a spiritual father of his disciples, sharing his wisdom as well as his own life and experience of God.

Opis:
Wydobywane w toku analiz podobieństwa i analogie dotyczą przede wszystkim kwestii etycznych: problemu relacji człowieka do Boga, ludzkiego cierpienia oraz kwestii zła.
In this article, I have sought to draw numerous parallels between Boethius’s thoughts and the content of the Book of Wisdom. The starting point of these considerations is that in Boethius’ On the consolation of philosophy there is a direct quote from the Book of Wisdom (8:1). The similarities and analogies mined in the course of the analysis concern primarily ethical issues: the question of man’s relationship to God, human suffering, and the question of evil. In the context of the most pressing issues that appear in the study of Boethius’s thinking, such as the question of his Christianism or sources of Neoplatonic influences, perhaps, based on these analogies, it will be possible to move a little closer toward solving these problems.

In the analyzed text, Rom 1:19-20, St. Paul states that people possess both the ability and the opportunity to know the true God, and they indeed actually achieve this knowledge. They acquire it thanks both to their own natural cognitive abilities and to the visible effects of God’s creative action in the natural world. This knowledge is not the product of a logical causal inference (i.e. from an effect back to its cause), but rather of intuition, which is an inner experience. It is rooted in reflection – but does not exclude reason – about the diversity of existing creatures, about the power of the forces of nature, the harmony perceptible in the natural realm, and the wisdom evident in the amazing design of the surrounding world.

Sir 51
Opis:
The article constitutes an analysis of the final pericope of the Book of the Wisdom of Sirach (Sir 51:13-30) in its Greek version. The text can be divided into two parts: in the first one (vv. 13-22) the author relates his personal experience of seeking and finding wisdom, while in the second part (vv. 23-30) he admonishes those who lack education to join his school and partake of the wisdom he himself has found. The wisdom the sage refers to is of a religious character (he asked for it in prayer – vv. 13b, 14a, 19c; it manifests itself in good deeds – v. 19b). Not only does the author make it clear in the first part of the pericope that the vital requirement for finding wisdom is to start early in life (vv. 13a, 15d), but he also explains the ways in which wisdom may be found (a human being should subordinate all spheres of life to finding it – vv. 13b, 14b, 15b, 19a, 21a). The pericope lists the means necessary to find wisdom (namely, purification – v. 20b, following the path of righteousness – v. 15c, striving for goodness – v. 18a, turning to wisdom – v. 20a, complying with the Law – v. 19b, listening – v. 16a, and repentance for the mistakes made – v. 19d) as well as mentions the gifts wisdom grants those who find it (joy – v. 15b, formation – v. 16b, heart, that is intellectual capabilities – v. 20c, language thanks to which one can praise God and share wisdom with others – v. 22a; all of these gifts are called a good possession – v. 21b). The sage emphasizes the fact that finding wisdom is not particularly difficult and does not require a tremendous effort (v. 16a), but searching for wisdom should be a constant part of life for those who wish to have it (they should never stop searching for it – v. 14b). In part two (vv. 23-30), which is of a didactic character, the sage encourages the uneducated to join his school so that he can share wisdom with them. The author admonishes those who – like him – desire wisdom to take advantage of his experience and undergo formation in his school. Sirach presents two ways leading to wisdom. The first one requires personal involvement in searching for it, whilst the second one entails taking possession of wisdom from someone who has already found it. In Sir 51:13-30 the author expresses great optimism concerning the possibility of finding and possessing wisdom. His position is at odds with the pessimism of the Book of Job and the Book of Ecclesiastes in this respect. The pericope under analysis here serves as a summary of the opinions expressed by the sage earlier in his book (cf. especially 6:18-37; 14:20 – 15:10; 24, 33:18-19). Together with Sir 1:1-10 it the frames the whole book and constitutes the recapitulation of the most significant theological aspects of Sirach’s text as well as a synthesis of his theology.

The Book of Wisdom is one of those late biblical Judaism texts that were created in the context of the creative confrontation with the Hellenic culture prevailing at that time. This confrontation concerned, among others, the basic question of faith of the chosen people, namely, the profession of the one only God who manifests his justice in the events of national and universal history. The basic event for the author of the Book of Wisdom is the exodus of Israel from Egypt, the aim of which was the entry of the chosen people into the Promised Land. On this way the nation experienced Godʼs Justice that proved to be his Grace and Mercy.

The article considers the presence of frogs in the Bible (16 occurrences) in relation to the wider symbolic meaning of this creature in antiquity. The ancient symbolism of frogs enables us to notice both the similarities and the differences between the biblical texts of the Israelites/Jews and the cultures of neighboring peoples. In the narrative of Exodus, frogs are the agents of divine punishment. In the Septuagint frogs are associated with the action of God, probably as a result of their relation to magic. The Old Testament interprets the second plague in the context of prayer. In the New Testament, frogs are found only in the Book of Revelation. The context of their appearance has a demonological and magic nature;  frogs, as unclean animals, are symbols of evil spirits and their influence.

Opis:
The main subject of Sir 6:18-37 is acquisition of wisdom. The pericopemay be divided into three parts: vv. 18-22 present the prerequisite for the acquisition of wisdom, namely undergoing wisdom formation; vv. 23-31 deal with one’s submission to wisdom, while the last fragment (vv. 32-37) focuses on the means necessary to obtain wisdom. The present article constitutes an analysis of the first part of Sir 6:18-37, that is Sir 6:18-22. Two sections may be distinguished within this excerpt - in the first one (vv. 18-19) the sage makes use of agricultural imagery to encourage his disciple to make a patient effort to seek wisdom, since the acquisition of wisdom is a long-lasting process that requires a lot of discipline (the process spans a person’s whole life; cf. Sir 6:18). The author emphasizes, however, that those who seek wisdom and undergo wisdom formation will soon be able to take advantage of its fruit. In the second section (vv. 20-22) the author describes a person who refuses to undergo wisdom formation as uneducated (cf. 6:20a) and devoid of intellectual abilities (literally, heartless; cf.6:20b). Lacking patience, such a person refuses to make an effort to receive wisdom education and rejects wisdom altogether. Thus, they will never become wise. Even though wisdom is the province of the few only (cf. 6:22), it is accessible to anyone, regardless of the person’s origin, social status or other external conditions. There is, however, one vital prerequisite, namely, a person’s inner attitude or disposition, their willingness to make an effort and their patience. Only few people fulfil these conditions and acquire wisdom.

Sophia’s banquet (Divine Wisdom’s banquet) – this type of iconography is an illustration of a specific passage of the ninth chapter of the Old Testament Book of Proverbs: Wisdom hath built herself a house (Prov 9, 1-6). That text became widespread in Old Russian literature within liturgical books containing passages of the Old Testament. Also the comment of Anastasius Sinaites for Proverbs 9, 1-6 was translated into Old Church Slavonic. Iconographic images of the Wisdom’s banquet scene should be considered as a phenomenon typical of South Slavic wall paintings from the period of fourteenth century. Later on, the discussed motif became popular in Old Russian art and began to appear on the East Slavic icons.

Sir 38:24 – 39:11 presents the scribe as a model of a person striving to acquire wisdom. The present article focuses on the second part of the pericope (39:1-11), which refers directly to the figure of the scribe. The fragment can be divided into five sections. In the first one (39:1-3) the sage describes the scribe’s intellectual pursuits and the texts he peruses. The second section (39:4) concentrates in turn on the scribe’s social commitments, while the third one (39:5) – on his attitude towards God. The fourth part (39:6-8) depicts the gift that the scribe may receive from God and the consequences it will have for his life. The final section (39:9-11) is devoted to the scribe’s fame, which he may achieve due to the acquisition of wisdom. Sirach emphasizes in his text the necessity to thoroughly study the Law and other biblical traditions (cf. 39:1). He also recommends learning from other nations to acquire wisdom (cf. 39:2-3; travel may serve such a purpose – cf. 39:4cd). However, the acquisition of wisdom does not stem only from a person’s intellectual efforts, but is primarily a gift from God (cf. 39:6ab). The sage stresses the role that prayer plays in one’s acquisition of wisdom. In the final part of his reflections the sage pays particular attention to the results the acquisition of wisdom brings (39:6cd-11), primarily the scribe’s everlasting fame that will transcend Israel’s borders.

Opis:
In Sir 14:20 – 15:10 Sirach continues his teachings concerning the acquisition of wisdom (cf. 1:1-10; 4:16-19 and 6:18-37) (the exegetico-theological analysis conducted in this article is based on the Greek version of the fragment). In the pericope the author presents the sage as a model and an example to follow for all those who wish to acquire wisdom. The pericope under analysis here comprises two parts. The present article focuses on the first one (14:20-27), in which Sirach concentrates on the actions the sage undertakes to acquire wisdom. The second section (15:1-10) in turn makes use of three metaphors to present the actions of wisdom throughout the process of a man’s search for it. The first part of the pericope (14:20-27) can be further divided into three sections. In the first one (14:20-21) Sirach praises the man who seeks wisdom, emphasizing his intellectual engagement (in the form of contemplating or pondering) as the basis for reaching the aim and finding wisdom. The second part (14:22-25) presents the actions aimed at acquiring wisdom with the use of three metaphors: the first is that of hunting (14:22), and the second – that of spying (14:23), even though verses 21:23-24 include a prohibition and a harsh reprimand against peeping or eavesdropping. The third metaphor, the most developed of all three, refers to camping next to wisdom (14:24-25). In the final section of part one (14:26-27) Sirach presents the promises made to those who strive to acquire wisdom, namely protection from danger and living close to wisdom.
