This paper analyses the publishing trends of children’s literature in Italy on the basis of the annual reports issued by LiBeRWEB. The analysis, which focuses on the book publishing market, starts by introducing the main Italian publishing houses, in whose hands the publication of children’s books is concentrated. The paper will also talk about independent micropublishing by introducing the most active publishing houses, which are specialised in specific areas, such as gender studies. The publishing market will be progressively investigated by analysing several data, which suggest that literature for children and young adults is the driving segment of the Italian book publishing market. Indeed, despite the economic crisis, this is the only segment that has had positive results in the last years. In particular, the data examine several elements, which will allow us to understand such a phenomenon. If in the last years the so-called “high literature” has lost many percentage points (-7.6% in 2009), the “Cinderella of literature” has, instead, obtained positive results (+4%), maintaining constant production levels. Despite the use of percentages, the analysis takes into consideration other elements, like the quality of works, whose criteria are difficult to establish. The data show a positive change: if up to 2006 the number of novels of mediocre quality was high, probably do to a consumer trend of the market, from 2007 onwards, the situation progressively improves. Finally, the article briefly discusses the data of the digital market by analysing the role of audiobooks and e-books in the Italian market of children’s literature.
L’articolo presenta un’analisi degli andamenti editoriali della letteratura per l’infanzia in Italia a partire dai rapporti annuali di LiBerweb . Analizza il mercato editoriale, presentando innanzitutto le principali case editrici italiane, nelle cui mani è concentrata la pubblicazione delle opere dedicate alla prima infanzia e all’adolescenza, ma anche la microeditoria indipendente, che sembra essere riuscita a ritagliarsi una propria fetta di mercato, occupandosi di settori ben precisi, come ad esempio di quello del genere. Successivamente, il mercato editoriale viene studiato, portando alla luce dati indicanti che il segmento dei libri per l’infanzia e l’adolescenza è l’unico, nonostante la crisi economica, a non aver perduto terreno negli ultimi anni. Nello specifico, i dati prendono in esame vari elementi che permettono di comprendere tale fenomeno. Se negli ultimi anni la cosiddetta “letteratura alta” ha perso importanti punti (-7,6% nel 2009), la “Cenerentola della letteratura” ha, invece, ottenuto risultati positivi (+4%), mantenendo di fatto i propri livelli di produzione. Nell’analisi dell’indagine condotta da LiBerweb vengono presi in considerazione anche altri elementi i cui criteri, a differenza dei numeri e delle percentuali, sono difficili da stabilire, come la qualità delle opere prodotte. I dati mettono in luce un cambiamento positivo: se fino al 2006 il numero di novità librarie di livello mediocre era elevato – segno che anche il mercato editoriale dell’infanzia sottostà ai dettami della moderna società consumistica – dal 2007 si assiste a un progressivo miglioramento. Infine, l’articolo discute brevemente i dati provenienti dal settore digitale, analizzando il ruolo di audiolibri ed e-books nel mercato editoriale per l’infanzia in Italia.

The article is devoted to the journalistic heritage of one of the most prominent representatives of the Ukrainian community in the South of Ukraine, who is rightly considered a lawyer, translator, bibliographer, compiler of dictionaries, and public figure Mykhailo Fedorovych Komarov (1844–1913). He was the author of over sixty articles in the literary-critical, socio-political, and biographical context. In his works he often reported on his own experience in a particular case. And in these personal comments or recollections elements of memories of the figure are shown. The purpose of this article is to find out what personal memories the Odesa figure contained in his articles, the objective is to identify memories, determine their thematic direction and value. During the research, it was found out that M. Komarov’s journalism mainly concerned the issue of the arbitrariness of the Russian government in relation to Ukrainian culture and book publishing. His testimony, given the small amount of literature published in the late nineteenth century, is important in many political and bibliographic contexts. The coverage of theatrical life, which the activist joined as a spectator and bibliographer, was of popularizing importance, although it also contains some new facts, for example, regarding the desire of the Ukrainian Coryphaeuses Theatre to tour abroad. Among the new facts that reveal articles about the activities of M. Komarov himself: his pedagogical experience and his books were banned by censorship. Various recollections of biographical stories, both in the context of Taras Shevchenko and other figures, convey both the perception of these personalities at the turn of the century and add new evidence of them.

The article addresses the Mergers & Acquisitions activity in the United States trade book publishing industry. The first part explores the merger between Penguin Group and Random House and its performance following the merger into one of the biggest publishers in the United States of America. The second part of the paper looks into the failed merger of Penguin Random House with Simon & Schuster and its antitrust trial. The Penguin Random House case study was built with financial information taken from LSEG Eikon, and the impact of the big publishing houses’ mergers on other agents in the market was identified with the help of in‐depth interviews with publishing experts.
Artykuł dotyczy fuzji i przejęć w branży wydawniczej w Stanach Zjednoczonych. W pierwszej części przeanalizowano fuzję Penguin Group i Random House oraz wyniki działalności powstałego w wyniku tej fuzji jednego z największych wydawców w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Druga część artykułu poświęcona jest nieudanej fuzji Penguin Random House z Simon & Schuster oraz toczącemu się w tej sprawie postępowaniu antymonopolowemu. Studium przypadku Penguin Random House zostało opracowane na podstawie informacji finansowych zaczerpniętych z LSEG Eikon, natomiast wpływ fuzji dużych wydawnictw na inne podmioty na rynku został zidentyfikowany na podstawie pogłębionych wywiadów z ekspertami zajmującymi się rynkiem wydawniczym.

The publishing market is in the world of new media space as many opportunities as the threats for the popularization of the book. Not all of them are obvious, and their consequences are simple to foresee. Like the book itself, which with the change, or rather the differentiation of its character, can be understood as: object, product, good, medium, content, text, relation, service. This article discusses the contemporary book market in Poland in the light of global changes in publishing production and distribution. The key to understanding them is to consider the role of the book and its way of life. Answer the question of what is gaining and losing the book through the new digital media, and with it the author and the reader in the changing roles of the forming and learning entities.
Rynek wydawniczy w epoce nowych mediów to przestrzeń równie wielu szans co zagrożeń dla popularyzacji książki. Nie wszystkie są oczywiste, a ich konsekwencje proste do przewidzenia. Podobnie jak sama książka, która wraz ze zmianą, czy raczej zróżnicowaniem swojej postaci, może być rozumiana jako: przedmiot, produkt, dobro, obiekt, medium, treść, tekst, relacja, usługa. Niniejszy artykuł ukazuje współczesny rynek książki w Polsce w świetle globalnych zmian w zakresie produkcji i dystrybucji wydawniczej. Kluczowe dla ich zrozumienia jest rozważenie roli książki i sposobu jej istnienia. W tekście podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytania, co zyskuje, a co traci książka za sprawą nowych, cyfrowych mediów, a wraz z nią autor i czytelnik w zmiennych rolach podmiotów tworzących i poznających.

The aim of this paper is to provide basic information on the main components of book culture in Slovakia in the first decades of the 21st century. The article starts with a brief overview of the existing volumes on the topic of contemporary book culture in Slovakia. In core, the paper analyses state support for book publishing, structure of publishers, book market, reading, libraries and book awards. Empirical data comes from available official documents and statistics.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie podstawowych informacji na temat głównych komponentów kultury książki na Słowacji w pierwszych dekadach XXI wieku oraz stanu, w jakim się znajdują. Artykuł zaczyna się od krótkiego przeglądu literatura przedmiotu, następnie ukazana została rola państwa, które wspiera liczne inicjatywy wydawnicze, ruch wydawniczy, rynek książki, czytelnictwo, biblioteki i nagrody związane z książką i literaturą. Dane pochodzą z dostępnych oficjalnych dokumentów i statystyk.

One of the important factors determining the public activity of the Galician Ruthenians (Ukrainians) after 1848 was the realization of the idea of educating the people. In the 1850-1860’s exclusively intellectuals were engaged in educational work; peasants and burghers were only recipients. At the time, the main attention was paid to the publication of educational literature for elementary schools and gymnasiums, as well as scientific, popular and religious lectures for intellectuals and common people. This was done by both private publishers and specially created non-gov0ernmental organizations such as the Russophile society Halytsko-Ruska Matytsia (since 1848) and the Ukrainophile society Prosvita (since 1868). Among the editions of Matytsia prevailing publications for the intelligentsia, Prosvita began its publishing activity mainly from small books for the common people.

This article is an attempt to determine the economic consequences of books virtualization. The paper has been dealt with the problem of dissemination of electronic books (e-books) and the implications of this fact for consumers and producers. The realization of this goal is accompanied by a hypothesis according towhich virtualization leads to the displacement of traditional information goods, including those with physical form, like regular books. Research area is a global publishing market whose value is estimated at 151 billion USD. At so high value every change in the book’s form leads to far-reaching repercussions on secondary markets, connected with production’s factors associated with them. A considered change is virtualization of books, which means the separation of content from the reader there. This means separating the production process into two, that is media, the relevant e-book, and an e-reader, so a device to play it. It is a production model that has been used to other information goods, particularly music and movies. For the changes were made possible both consumers and producers need to recognize that the choice of e-books is more preferred for them. In order to explain the behavior of consumers the cause of “switch” from the consumption of traditional books to e-books has to be explained. The explanation is based on the comparison of consumption of cost of traditional books and e-books, which allows to determine the breakpoint beyond which the consumption of the e-book is more favorable. For the other side of the market, which is made up of e-book’s producers (in fact reproducers), the discussion based on production process of information goods. This allowed to show the benefits of the fact that the marginal cost of reproduction of e-books is very low, close to zero, which is characteristic of information goods, compounded by their virtualization. The presentation of nature of e-books’ production process and their redistribution over the Internet, shows the possibility of reduction of the entities from the supply chain. In order to present the value of profits from the shorting the supply chain, prices of regular and electronic books were analyzed. For that purpose data from online bookstores like Amazon.com and empik.com were used. Using comparative analysis, it was found that the prices on the US market were not diametrically different. On the Polish market they rise approximately 34%, which is related to the stage of market development. The summary of investigations at both levels allowed to conclude that the development of the e-book market could be more beneficial for both consumers and producers. The analyses abstracted from the institutional factors. For this reason, at the end of the discussion the problematic issues related to cultural factors, not-market e-books exchange and social benefits and costs were highlighted. In conclusion, proposals for potential crowding out regular books by electronic ones were put forward. It should be presumed that if any conditions laid down in the article happen, the expansion of the e-book market will follow. However, problematic issues will act as a limiter, which does not allow for the complete removal of traditional books.

The publishing sector in Poland generates about 0.5 percent of GDP. Number of employees in the book industry as a whole is more than 80 thousand and in the publishing houses – almost 6 thousand. In recent years, the situation of the sector steadily worsens, including as a result the government action, such as raising the VAT rate in 2011. Textbooks are a segment of the book industry with the highest value. It is, depending on the methodology, from 840 million PLN to approximately 1.3 billion PLN. The main problems associated with the distribution of books are: a steadily increasing number of issued titles, prolonged sale of inventory from the previous years, difficulties of EMPiK trade policy, monopoly of some wholesalers and a decline in sales of traditional bookselling in favor of online purchases, including used books. Situation of printing companies is slightly better, although the problems of the entire market reflects on this sector as well. Particularly on smaller companies. Government programs – e-books and free textbooks are one of the most serious threats to the entire book market.

Lviv, being a second publishing center after Warsaw, also has its share in the production of children and adolescents literature. During the interwar period there were publishing companies working in the city which willingly lead a publishing policy in this field. In general, there were 787 titles for young readers published in Lviv. The main investors of these books were Państwowe Wydawnictwo Książek Szkolnych, Atlas Library, the “Odrodzenie” Publishing Company, R. Wegner Polish Publishing, and the Ossolińscy National Publishing Company, who published 75% of the young reader’s books. The main goal of the article is to present the offer of Lviv’s investors in this area and to capture the nature of the Lviv publishing center.

Publishing bindings were popularized in the last three decades of the nineteenth century, but earlier there were ephemeras like serial covers of calendars, year-books, almanacs, books of poems. Following the example of the French study the Polish publishing bookbindings were fouded, and they were created before 1865. One noticed the activity of two publishers: Bolesław Maurycy Wolff from St. Petersburg and Konstanty Żupański from Poznań, who have carried out several such projects. Decoration technique was limited to gold- or blind stamping plaques with a very precise drawing. Among the decorations, in addition to heraldic motifs, there were symbolic and architectural scenes related to the content of the work.

The paper describes a somewhat forgotten book collection of the outstanding Wrocław editor Jan Kuglin, in terms of the editions on print aesthetics contained therein. The collection, which is a reflection of Kuglin’s scientific passions, contains many valuable books in German, English, Polish, Russian and Czech in the field of book and printing history, editing, book design, typography, writing, graphic techniques, polygraphy, paper industry, bookbinding, etc. In the book collection of Kuglin one can find editions being examples of a perfect typography. Thus, the collection stored in the Library of the Institute of Information and Library Science of the University of Wrocław is an excellent source for research on the aesthetics of printing in the 20th century.

Opis:
Starting with considerations on cover role and function, the author shows how scientific interest in covers has intensified and became profiled nowadays. At the same time, the author indicates that research emphasizes the supportive character of the cover with respect to the main text. The author notes that not all messages placed on covers serve that task. One of such elements is selected as the subject for analysis – information about series placed in popular science works – to examine how they are developed and what detailed tasks they serve. The analyses comprise different series signs (series name, mark, descriptions, information about publications included in the series) and prove they have diverse functions: (1) they indicate the series (e.g. its scope, subject) and fix it in the memory of a reader (the basic task), but also (2) increase publication attractiveness, (3) suggest to the recipient that the publisher has developed a deliberate strategy for knowledge popularisation, cares about the continuity and consistency of its actions, (4) become an element of self-promotion in marketing – they create a picture of the publishing house as an institution that serves social interest, (5) allow the readers to make assumptions about a specific publication they encounter, and offer suggestions for further reading. Analyses have also shown that publishers usually ensure that the concept of the series and series signals placed on the covers are harmonised with popular science publications and correspond to their character.

Two hundred years after the original edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812–1815) was published there is a possibility to ponder upon how books of the Brothers Grimm were edited in Poland. The review presents fairy tales in self-contained issues in periods: 1895–1939, 1939–1945, 1945–1989, 1990–2011. The first book by Brothers Grimm in Poland was Baśnie dla dzieci i młodzieży (1895) translated by Cecylia Niewiadomska, edited by Gebethner & Wolff. A big number of single fairy tales were published in the years 1918–1939. After the Second World War the most popular collection of fairy tales by W. and J. Grimm was Baśnie translated by Marceli Tarnowski and edited by Nasza Księgarnia in 1956. Up to year 2000 it was reprinted 18 times! In 1982 Ludowa Spółdzielnia Wydawnicza published the first critical edition: Baśnie braci Grimm (transl. by Emilia Bielicka and Marceli Tarnowski, with afterword and comments by Helena Kapełuś) and in 2010 Media Rodzina published the first full version of W. and J. Grimm’s fairy tales: Baśnie dla dzieci i dla domu (translation and afterword by Eliza Pieciul-Karmińska). After 1989 we can observe “chains of books” – multiple adaptations and other editions “related to” those fairy tales. Mass culture and commercial aspects brought many variants of text and visual representations. Many of them have new authors. Present- day adaptations are – like in the 19th century – books for the youngest children, but sometimes they are also new fairy tales inspired by the plot (e.g. Bohdan Butenko’s book). In present times there are possibilities to familiarize children with the original text of the canonic fairy tales, but more and more often only specialists are interested in it.

Literary reportage has been one of the most popular genres in Poland in recent years. Works written by Polish and foreign reporters are published by the main publishing houses in the country. A group of prominent reporters such as Ryszard Kapuściński, Hanna Krall and Małgorzata Szejnert is joined by those born in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as debutants. Their books gain literary prizes and are eagerly read by a literary audience. The goal of this article is to explain the growing interest in reportage in Poland in the first decades of the 21st century. Statistical data from reports on the publishing industry, bibliographic data from library catalogs on reportages and non-fiction novels published by Czarne and information on awards for non-fiction novels were used to determine the place of reportage on the Polish book market. In order to describe the specificity of contemporary reportages and answer the question what readers needs they meet, it was decided to analyze reportages by Polish-Swedish author Maciej Zaremba Bielawski who represents investigative journalism and a gonzo-style non-fiction novel by the American journalist Charlie LeDuff.
