Opis:
The article searches for the sources of guilt. It evokes Nietzsche’s notion of guilt as a derivative of unpaid mercantile debts. In opposition to this is Bouber’s socio-divine origin of fault. J. Tischner and J. Hołówka are also cited; they ascribe to guilt objective status. There is an important distinction between guilt and reconciliation, as well as a description of the possible contamination by guilt. The article also deals with Jasper's call to accept one’s own fault, otherwise there is a risk of trivialisation of life. The source of fault lies in relations between people and in the "point of holiness" mentioned by M. Blondel.

Opis:
The paper presents pondering on the perception of poverty. Tries to explain when and why people blame the poor for their laziness and the lack of willpower. Interregional variation in the individual blame is explained from the point of view of economic development and local/regional culture. State paternalism, materialism and xenophobia are analysed as the cultural constructs that may influence the popular perception of poverty as a poor’s fault – the interregional difference in the individual blame in Ukraine. The data for analysis are taken from the European Value Survey, 2008. It was found that state paternalism is inversely correlated with individual blame except for five northern oblasts of Ukraine, where people higher scored on the state paternalism tend to blame the poor more, not less. The discussion of the result appeals to the rapid economic development of the metropolitan area (Kiev-city) that propels individualism, while the cultural hypothesis emphasises the importance of the history of the relationship with private property.

Besides the impact that COVID-19 has had in the sanitary, political and economic domains, it has also triggered multiple discursive processes, what opens up the field for an analysis from sociosemiotics, the social science interested in the study of ‘meaning in action’. The aim of this article is to discuss from such a perspective how the current crisis linked to the COVID-19 virus has given place to the emergence of processes of narrative construction of an ‘Other’ to be blamed for the threat. While in some contexts the dominant narrative has been that COVID-19 is ‘the Chinese’ –and their unhealthy culinary habits– fault, in others the focus has been set on ‘the irresponsible’ that do not stay home when indicated to do so, as well as on ‘the posh’, given that they can afford travelling and hence can import the virus on their return. Departing from the premise which poses that cognition is articulated in narrative terms, the article argues how, in cases such as the current COVID-19 crisis, a discursive construction of collective actors by means of mechanisms of actorialization, generalization and axiologization is necessary for the dynamics of blame-attribution.

The study deals with a phenomenon of responsibility. It distinguishes between natural responsibility and moral responsibility or legal responsibility (liability). The central intention of the text is to reveal that responsibility does not refer only to moral or legal dimensions. The natural responsibility is greater (more important) than the moral responsibility or legal one. What is more, both the moral responsibility and the legal responsibility are changeable. The natural responsibility instead, is constant and concerns all the mankind in the same way.

Artykuł porusza problematykę wzajemnych relacji między stroną podmiotową a winą w prawie karnym. W ramach analizy tych relacji naświetlone zostają dotychczasowe poszczególne teorie winy. Autorka artykułu podejmuje ponadto próbę uchwycenia istoty winy w oparciu o badania z dziedziny psychologii i filozofii. Poczynione w artykule ustalenia w przedmiocie winy zostały następnie zestawione z pojęciem strony podmiotowej w polskim prawie karnym.
The article discusses the issue of mutual relations between the subjective side and the guilt in criminal law. As part of the analysis of these relations, the theories of guilt are highlighted. Moreover author attempts to establish the essence of guilt basing on psychological and philosophical findings. Conclusions about guilt made in article are then compared with the notion of the subjective side in Polish criminal law.

Opis:
This paper is concerned with the social and cultural constructions of male rape in voluntary agencies, England. Using sociological, cultural, and post-structural theoretical frameworks, mainly the works of Foucault, I demonstrate the ways in which male rape is constructed and reconstructed in such agencies. Social and power relations, social structures, and time and place shape their discourses, cultures, and constructions pertaining to male rape. This means that constructions of male rape are neither fixed, determined, nor unchanging at any time and place, but rather negotiated and fluid. I theorize the data-which was collected through semi-structured interviews and qualitative questionnaires-including male rape counselors, therapists, and voluntary agency caseworkers. The theoretical and conceptual underpinnings that frame and elucidate the data contribute to sociological understandings of male rape.

Communicative Blame, central cases, borderline cases, practical point, respect
Opis:
In this article I thoroughly examine Miranda Fricker’s account of blame based on Communicative Blame as a paradigm explanation of the practice by focusing my attention on a non-central case: silent blame. I argue that this kind of instance has not been successfully connected with her selected paradigm case so I propose a different “focal meaning” or rationale to better accommodate it as part of the entire range of cases of the practice of blaming. I begin my argument drawing upon Herbert L.A. Hart’s methodology on central and borderline cases as a more accurate way to address the complex structure of the concept of blame, since this approach is sensitive to borderline cases as well. I also argue that, although marginal, silent blame fulfils a purpose which must too be vindicated. Thus, following Hart’s suggestion on the value of studying borderline cases, I propose a more accurate reframing of the general point of the practice of blame as a mechanism to secure respect for ourselves.

Opis:
W badaniach prezentowanych w artykule poszukiwano różnic w atrybucjach przyczynowych i zachowaniach zaradczych sprawców krzywd wyrządzanych partnerom relacji wspólnotowych i opartych na wymianie. Celem badań była też eksploracja związku rodzaju zachowań zaradczych z wartościowaniem ofiary. Uczestnicy badania zostali w sposób losowy podzieleni na cztery grupy i przypominali sobie oraz opisywali zdarzenie z przeszłości, w którym wyrządzili krzywdę: (1) partnerowi bliskiego związku albo (2) własnemu dziecku, albo (3) podwładnemu, albo (4) znajomemu, a następnie wypełniali kwestionariusz dotyczący opisanego zdarzenia i szacowali cechy „ofiary” na kilkunastu skalach atrakcyjności. Najwyższy poziom odpowiedzialności i winy przypisali sobie krzywdzący partnerzy bliskich związków, najniższy przełożeni, a średni – rodzice i znajomi. Działania naprawcze (tutaj: różne formy przeprosin) najczęściej podejmowali partnerzy, znacząco rzadziej rodzice i znajomi, a najrzadziej przełożeni. Uwypuklenie motywu afiliacji sprzyja działaniom naprawczym, natomiast uwypuklenie motywu władzy zdaje się hamować takie działania i zarazem nasilać skłonność do przywracania sprawiedliwości psychologicznej – stosowania usprawiedliwień i wymówek. Badania ujawniły współwystępowanie usprawiedliwień i wymówek ze skłonnością do pomniejszania wartości ofiary, co jest zgodne z przewidywaniami opartymi na koncepcji dysonansu poznawczego.
The study investigated whether the kind of relationship between the perpetrator and the victim has an impact on perpetrator’s behavior (attribution, remedial actions) after having caused harm. The aim of the research was also to check if there exists any correlation of such reactions (e.g. self-blame, excuse) with posterior victim assessment. Four kinds of social relationships were examined: parent-child, romantic partners, superior-subordinate, and acquaintances. Participants were asked to describe an event in which a certain person (indicated in the questionnaire) felt harmed by them and their own reactions to that event. They also estimated the victim’s features on several attractiveness scales. The results show that the level of blame and responsibility attributed to themselves was the highest in the case of guilty partners in close relationships, the lowest in the case of superiors, and medium in the case of parents and acquaintances. Remedial actions are most often taken by romantic partners, much less often by parents and acquaintances, and most rarely by superiors. The frequency pattern for excuses and justifications was nearly exactly the opposite. One of the possible explanations of the results refers to the combined effect of affiliation and power motives that influence perpetrator’s reactions and substantially vary across different types of social relations. The presented data also indicates that victim devaluation might be considered as a coping strategy used by the perpetrator.

Opis:
This study combines two discourse analytic frameworks, and explores the utility of this combination for unpacking journalistic opinions written in response to a polarising and racialised event in South African education: the Overvaal High School incident. It uncovers strategic constructions of racism within politicised blame games, in the context of Overvaal, and discloses how blame-assertion and blame-denial became implicated in framings of moral panic. Methodologically, this study relies on the concept race trouble, as well as a practical model of argumentation. In conjunction, these two approaches supply insight into both the calculated construction of racism, as well as the incorporation of these constructions into arguments aimed at rationalising blame-assertion and blame-denial. The results are interpreted within theorisations of moral panic. The findings showcase how arguments are produced to blame an individual politician for escalating racial antagonism around Overvaal, instead of offering a deeply historicised and contextualised account of the incident. Consequently, the arguments that shaped the opinion pieces, and the framing of racism involved in these arguments, ultimately obfuscate inquiry into structural determinants of racial inequity. Implicitly, this framing of racism and its incorporation into argumentation and blame games, produce a form of moral panic, in which South Africans racialised as white are construed as embattled by self-serving (black) politicians. Such politicians are vilified, or rendered as folk devils, and the results indicate how this process evades penetrating analyses of racialisation and its intersection with unequal education.

Admitting a variety of psychological conditioning of making use of pastime, attention must be drawn to inability of making use of free time. There are people who, while objectively having free time, are not able to experience this feeling. It refers to neurotic individuals. The paper is an attempt to analyze these mechanisms in the neurotic personality which are responsible for inability to make use of pastime or even lack of the feeling of having free time. Neither active planning of free time nor a passive awareness if its experiencing are involved. The above mentioned mechanisms are: a neurotic person’s perfectionism, specific attitude towards one’s freedom and neurotic feeling of guilt. Neurotic feeling of guilt is presented as the most destructive mechanism, closely related to perfectionism and the attitude towards the neurotic’s own freedom. The inner mechanisms of a neurotic individual prevent them from realization of the functions of free time which may be regarded as main and essential: from the regenerative function, through compensative and suspensive, to the creative function. The paper is an attempt to interpret the inner mechanisms of a neurotic individual, mainly within the framework of analytical psychology, as the causes of being unable to realize the particular functions of pastime. The analysis of a neurotic person’s inner mechanisms has been conducted with reference to the latter’s symptoms as well as origins, especially regarding the neurotic feeling of guilt.

The main purpose of the article is to analyze the Latin speech published in Padua in 1642 and delivered at the solemn assembly of the Polish nation at the University of Padua, in the church of St. Anthony of Padua, on May 7 of the previous year. The author of the text was Stanisław Temberski, a Krakow canon and professor at the Jagiellonian University. The author of the article briefly presents his biography and literary works, and then analyzes the speech itself. Avoiding assessing the literary value of the work as such, she tries to present the ideas contained in it and show how the humanistic culture characteristic of the early modern era allows the author to construct eloquent formulas and images that glorify the name of his homeland by praising the glory of its saint. The laudation of Poland is inextricably linked with the praise of its patron, Saint Stanislaus, Bishop and martyr. In Temberski’s oration, ancient tradition and medieval, hagiographic legend intertwine, and everything is processed in accordance with the author’s mentality and the concepts of seventeenth-century rhetoric. The holy martyr is compared to Hercules and the evil tyrant responsible for his death is presented as an instrument of Satan, perceived as “infernal Cerberus.” Temberski’s use of his rhetorical skills for propaganda purposes is noteworthy: on the one hand, he shows his humanistic culture and presents himself as a citizen of the Respublica litteraria. On the other hand, he inscribes the Polish state into the long tradition of Respublica Christiana. In this context, he makes it clear that a country that produces such pious and heroic men as the holy bishop is worthy of appreciation among the nations of Europe.
