Opis:
In numerically controlled grinding of aeroengine blades, a sharp change in a rotating shaft caused by a singular zone greatly reduces grinding precision and quality. This paper proposes an algorithm to optimize the tool-path that combines optimization of the C-axis rotation angle, a modification to the tool orientation and adjustments to the tool position by taking a four-array machine tool with two rotational axes (B-axis and C-axis) as an example. The algorithm was verified using VERICUT software, furthermore, in machining experiments, the rotation amplitudes of the rotary axis in singular areas was effectively reduced, which ensured grinding quality of blades.

This study focuses on the development of a reliable prosthetic running blade primarily composed of carbon fiber. The reliable performance of novel prosthetic running blades has been evaluated by mechanical testing and finite element numerical modeling. Theexperimental analysis confirmed that these blades exhibit superior suitability for high-impact activities, demonstrating reliable load-bearing capacity and effective shock absorption properties. The tensile testing exhibited a linear elastic behavior of the composite material up to a strain of 0.075 mm/mm. Further, it was found that stress concentration areas and fracture points within the blade structure. Furthermore, numerical results revealed a maximum deflection of 29.60 mm that the blade can achieve. The kinetic energy loss during impact demonstrated an 8.5% decrease in blade kinetic energy, with the highest loss occurring at Vy = 30 m/s. Ultimately, this research aims to enhance the reliability, durability, and safety of prosthetic running blades, empowering athletes to reach new heights in sports.

Opis:
This article presents a description of design work for newly created centrifugal fans. This was done based on the example of an innovative solution that uses a change in impeller geometry. In the described solution, this is achieved by shortening and lengthening the impeller blades. The development of a technical solution with such properties requires a change of approach in the design process compared with classic solutions. Therefore, the following text describes this process from the concept stage to demonstrator tests. The principle of operation of such a solution is presented and the assumptions made based on analytical calculations are also described. The text also shows a 3D model of the centrifugal fan with variable impeller geometry, made with the help of computer aided design (CAD) tools. In the further part, numerical calculations were made on its basis. The finite element method (FEM) calculation made it possible to verify the structural strength of the project and its modal properties as well as to verify flow parameters, thanks to the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations. The next step describes the procedure for testing centrifugal fans with variable rotor geometry, which is different from that of fans without this feature. The next part presents the results of research from the tests carried out.

Opis:
Propeller performance is typically considered under clean conditions, despite the fact that fouling is an inevitable phenomenon for propellers. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of roughness due to fouling on the performance of a propeller using a CFD simulation in conjunction with the roughness function model. A simulation of a clean propeller is verified for a five-blade propeller model using existing experimental results. A roughness function model is then suggested based on existing measured roughness data. The simulations are extended for the same propeller under varying severities of roughness. Initially, it is concluded that KT and ηo gradually decrease with increasing fouling roughness, while KQ increases, compared to smooth propeller. For instance, at J=1.2 for medium calcareous fouling, KT is reduced by about 26%, KQ increases by about 7.0%, and ηo decreases by 30.9%. In addition, for the rough propeller, the extra power required is defined as the specific sea margin (SSM) to compensate for the power loss. A slight roughness causes a large decrease in ηo. A propeller painted with foul-release paint and an unpainted propeller are found to require 2.7% SSM and 57.8% SSM over four years of service, respectively. Finally, the use of foul-release paints for propeller painting is strongly advised.

Opis:
The Pump As Turbine (PAT) is an important technology for low-cost micro-hydropower and energy recovery, and hence the internal hydraulics of PAT needs to be clearly understood. Additionally, during its operation, the sediments in the water increase the roughness of the internal surfaces and may alter the internal hydraulics and PAT performance similar to a centrifugal pump or Francis turbine. The researchers tried hard to perform simple modifications such as impeller blade rounding to increase the efficiency of PAT. In this paper, the developed test rig is used to analyze the performance of the impeller blade rounding and is validated with a numerical model. This numerical model is further used to study the influence of impeller blade rounding and surface roughness on internal hydraulics and PAT performance. The impeller blade rounding at the most increased the PAT efficiency by 1-1.5 % at the Best efficiency point (Q=16.8 lps), mainly due to the wake reduction on the suction side and increased flow area. With increasing the surface roughness from 0-70 μm, the PAT efficiency is decreased maximum by 4 %. The efficiency was mainly reduced due to increased hydraulic losses at flow zone and disk friction losses at the non-flow zone.

Opis:
The integral formulation of the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings (FW–H) analogy, developed by Farassat (known as Farassat’s formulation 1A), is implemented to study the sound generation and propagation of rotating slender bodies. The general post-processing numerical code utilizes the linear acoustic theory to predict the thickness and loading noise terms for bodies in subsonic motion. The developed numerical code is validated for elementary acoustic sources (rotating monopole and dipole) against analytical solutions. The validated code is then applied for prediction of lowfrequency in-plane harmonic noise (LF-IPH) of a model helicopter rotor of Sargent and Schmitz in a low-thrust hover with full-scale tip Mach number. The required loading distribution of the rotor blade is obtained with CFD (RANS) and Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) methods and also validated against literature data. The developed acoustic code, supplemented by CFD and BEMT loading analyses, allows for a detailed comparison (thickness and loading, near- and far-field, etc.) of the LFIPH noise of a helicopter rotor in both, time and frequency domains. The predicted (FW–H) acoustic signals are compared not only with the reference code solutions, but also with the experimental data. Moreover, the paper quantifies the impact of computational grid density and time-step size (used by CFD and FW–H codes) on the final solution accuracy. Additionally, a simplified analytical code is developed (based on elementary dipole solutions, compact chord assumption and BEMT method) allowing for the initial loading noise analysis with highly reduced computational resources. The acquired results are fully compatible with the classical FW–H analysis in terms of the impact of the in-plane and out-of-plane forces on the generated noise. The FW–H code predictions of the acoustic pressure and its components are in satisfactory agreement with the reference and experimental data of Sargent and Schmitz.

Steam turbine technology with enhanced flexibility will continue to participate in electric power supply mixes. Last stage blades secure the reliability of a steam turbine and require high precision manufacturing and assembly. This case study presents a statistical analysis of geometric errors of the throat sizes of the last stage blades in a mid-size steam turbine. A 3D optical scanner is employed to capture detailed geometries of rotor blades and a half of assembled nozzle diaphragm. Unrolled cylinder cross-sections are used to evaluate 2D geometrical features such as blade throats and areas at three different diameters, and the results are compared to intended designs. In addition, linear correlations between the throat size and blade pitch, area and trailing edge thickness are established, and blade throat position shifts are quantified. Such a comprehensive study is presented for the first time, and some useful conclusions can be retrieved from this case study.

Opis:
During the operation of a rotor, various types of vibrations appear in this mechanical system and often limit the performance and endanger the safety of the operation. Therefore, dynamic analysis is essential because precise knowledge of the vibration behaviour is essential to ensure proper operation. This article presents a set of scientific techniques for the modelling and simulation of rotor vibrations. To work out the equations of the vibratory movement of the rotor, we used the energy approach of Lagrange. To achieve this, a model with one blading wheel carried by a shaft supported by two hydrodynamic bearings is chosen basedon the characteristics of the rotor studied (Fan 280 cement draft fan). It is an arduous task to manually ascertain the analytical resolution of the differential equations that characterise the vibratory behaviour of the rotor. The numerical approach employing the finite element method, programmed on the ANSYS software, made it possible to perform the vibration analysis of the rotor. First, the FAN 280 cement draft fan rotor is modelled using SolidWorks 3D software and reverse design using the coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for the design of the fins. Then, the modal characteristics of the fan rotor model were analysed using the finite element analysis (FEA) software ANSYS Workbench. Also, to study the effect of blade wear on critical speeds, the Campbell diagram was obtained. Finally, harmonic analysis was performed to determine the amplitude of the rotor vortex at critical speeds obtained with and without blade wear.

The article presents an experimental method of determining the geometric properties of jet engine rotor airfoils based on modal vibration testing. The procedure is based on adjusting the results of analytical calculations to the laboratory outcomes. Experimental tests were carried out on a set of 20 jet engine fan blades made of AL7022-T6 aluminium alloy. Each blade differed in weight and geometric dimensions within the accepted design tolerance. Numerical analysis of five airfoils that differed in thickness was performed. Modal vibration test results were summarised and compared with the results obtained by the numerical method. The comparison revealed a high similarity of the frequency and form of vibrations acquired by numerical simulation for each of the blades in relation to the executed vibration testing. Based on the verification of the theoretical model with the results obtained through experimental testing, conclusions were drawn about the object’s dynamic behaviour and its technological quality and geometric properties, whereby each of airfoil was probably thinned.

Paper is considering the purpose and the process of development of last stage blade for intermediate pressure module of 13K215 steam turbine. In the last 20–30 years most of the steam turbine manufacturers were focused on improving such a turbine mainly by upgrading low pressure module. In a result of such a modernization technology were changed from impulse to reaction. The best results of upgrading were given by developing low pressure last stage blade. With some uncertainty and based on state of art knowledge, it can be stand that improving of this part of steam turbine is close to the end. These above indicators show an element on which future research should be focused on – in the next step it should be intermediate pressure module. In the primary design the height of intermediate pressure last stage blade was 500 mm but because of change of technology this value was decreased to 400 mm. When to focus on reaction technology, the height of the last stage blade is related to output power and efficiency. Considered here is the checking the possibility of implementing blades, in a reaction technology, higher than 400 mm and potentially highest. Article shows a whole chosen methodology of topic described above. It leads through the reasons of research, limitations of 13K215 steam turbine, creation of three-dimensional models, fluid flow calculations, mechanical integrity calculations and proposed solutions of design.
