Opis:
This article presents the design of a miniaturized wearable patch antenna to be utilized for the body area network (BAN) applications. To reduce the size of the antenna a crown fractal geometry antenna design technique has been adopted, and which resulted in a size reduction of 26.85%. Further, the polyester cloth has been used as the substrate of the antenna to make the proposed antenna a flexible one, and suitable for wearable biomedical devices. The designed antenna functions for the 2.45 GHz ISM band and has the gain and bandwidth of 4.54 dB and 131 MHz respectively, covering the entire ISM band. The antenna characteristics like return loss (S11), directivity and radiation pattern have been simulated and analyzed. Specific absorption rate (SAR) and front to back ratio (FBR) of the proposed antenna at the human body tissue model (HBTM) in the planer and different bending conditions of the antenna have also simulated and analyzed, and the proposed antenna fulfils the desired design standards.

Opis:
The investigations deal with mass transfer in simulated biomedical systems. The modification of classical diffusion chamber, sequential unit (SU) system, imitated different biomedical setups, boundary conditions. The experiments simulated: diffusion chamber (also with two barriers), transport through the membrane to the blood stream, transport from the stent eluting drug simultaneously to the vessel cells and to the blood stream. The concentrations of substances and the relative mass increases/decreases for SU systems indicate that the order of the curves follows the order of mass transfer resistances. The strong dependence of mass transfer rates versus type of diffusing substance was confirmed. The calculated drug fluxes, diffusion coefficients, permeation coefficients are convergent with literature. Permeation coefficients for complex sequential systems can be estimated as parallel connexion of constituent coefficients. Experiments approved functionality of the SU for investigations in a simulated biomedical system. Obtained data were used for numerical verification.

Opis:
This paper presents an analysis of some class of bilinear systems that can be applied to biomedical modelling. It combines models that have been studied separately so far, taking into account both the phenomenon of gene amplification and multidrug chemotherapy in their different aspects. The mathematical description is given by an infinite dimensional state equation with a system matrix whose form allows decomposing the model into two interacting subsystems. While the first one, of a finite dimension, can have any form, the other is infinite dimensional and tridiagonal. A methodology of the analysis of such models, based on system decomposition, is presented. An optimal control problem is defined in the l1 space. In order to derive necessary conditions for optimal control, the model description is transformed into an integro-differential form. Finally, biomedical implications of the obtained results are discussed.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to interesting and difficult problems concerned with interdisciplinary biomedical engineering. The main purpose of the paper is to present rules and application of still developing modern methods of medical imaging combining properties of the selected techniques. The examples considered by the authors include combined applications of different methods of imaging such as: X-ray imaging, videoendoscopy, and ultrasonography. Some selected examples of effects obtained during real interventions assisted by combined imaging of operation site are shown in the paper. Examples of imaging the application of stents allowing for the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are also reported. Videoendoscopy imaging and X-ray imaging are two complementary methods applied during the interventions presented in stenting control. On the one hand, these methods facilitate a significant increase in diagnostics and treatment comfort. On the other hand, there is possibility to control stenting efficiency.

Opis:
The paper is concerned with development of optimal treatment protocols that take into account both action of several drugs and the evolution of drug resistance. It is a result of analysis of evolution of drug resistance in cancer population but presented methodology can be applied in any case involving drug resistance stemming from gene amplification. First, a biological background is given. In subsequent sections of the paper, the developed technique is presented and some early analytical results, which form a basis for more precise modeling, are shown. Afterwards, the model description is transformed into a vector integro-differential equation, which makes it possible to define necessary conditions of optimal solution to the minimization problem arising from the search for the optimal treatment. Finally, some remarks on the model applicability are presented.

Opis:
In this paper we study some properties of infinite models of the controlled evolution of drug resistance. We combine asymptotic techniques used in previous studies of similar models with methods of control theory and of semigroup theory. It enables us to find conditions for stability of the model both when the sensitive population is annihilated and when there exists a permanent influx from the sensivite compartment into drug resistant one. The conditions are expressed in terms of relationships between amplification and deamplification ratios as well as average life times of cells and intensity of anticancer drug action.
