BioBaler harvesting system
Opis:
Willow biomass can be collected in the form of entire or chipped shoots. The method depends on the harvest cycle of the plants, availability of necessary machines and the expected use of harvested raw material. Methods of harvesting influence on biomass quality during its acquisition and further in the storage period. Therefore, the aim of the research was to characterize the harvest of willow plantation with the use of a biobaler WB 55 and to assess the quality of the obtained biomass during the 9-month period of its storage. Willow was harvested with biobaler WB 55 in January 2010 on a commercial plantation. The 3.5 ha plantation was situated in the north-east of Poland, in the village of Dorotowo (53°42′9.88″ N 20°25′11.02″ E). An analysis of the biomass quality in terms of its thermophysical and chemical properties was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of the UWM in Olsztyn. Willow harvesting with a unit consisting of a 129 kW tractor and biobaler WB 55 was conducted efficiently. The average harvesting efficiency was about 18 bales per hour of the unit operation (8.75 Mg h-1 FM). The fresh matter density in the bales averaged 358.10 kg m-3 FM, whereas in dry matter it was 166.16 kg m-3 DM. With extended duration of storage, the quality of willow biomass as an energy raw material improved. The biomass in the bales steadily lost its moisture, from 53.06% in January to 17.48% in September. On the other hand, the lower heating value increased during that same period from 7.75 MJ kg-1 to 15.65 MJ kg-1. It has been found based on the observations made during the study period that the advantages of a biobaler WB 55 are the easy and efficient harvesting of plants on a plantation and bales can be used for energy production as needed.

Opis:
The ecology of tundra terrestrial environments has gained increasing attention due to potential major changes resulting from global warming and climate change. However, the composition of terrestrial microbial communities and their role in the biogeochemical carbon cycle are less well studied. This is the first report of the C-biomass of bacteria, fungi, and representative protozoa (heterotrophic nanoflagellates, naked amoebae, and testate amoebae) in Alaskan tundra soil samples, and the effects of glucose solution enrichment in laboratory studies simulating release of soluble organic compounds as may occur during permafrost melt and increased plant root exudates due to global warming. The data for three moss-rich surface samples, two in spring and one in summer (2011), are reported for C-supplemented (8,000 μg glucose-C) and non-supplemented treatments in laboratory culture. Seven days after supplementation, fungal C-biomass in the glucose-treated and untreated samples were similar in the range of 5 to 11 mg g–1 soil dry weight, the highest values in the summer samples. The bacterial C-biomass was the next highest in the range of 20 to 120 μg g–1 soil dry weight, followed by heterotrophic nanoflagellates (2 to 14 μg g–1 soil dry weight). The naked amoebae (0.13 to 0.94 μg C g–1 soil dry weight) and testate amoebae (2 to 20 ng C g–1 soil dry weight) contributed the least C-biomass. All of the bacterial and protozoan treatments showed increased biomass with glucose supplementation. Based on size, and C-biomass estimates, the phagotrophic protozoa appear to be organized in a classical bacterial-based trophic hierarchy (i.e. bacteria – nanoflagellates – naked amoebae – testate amoebae, in ascending order). Correlations of the C-biomass of bacteria to each of the protozoa, provided further evidence of a trophic pyramid; bacteria vs. nanoflagellates (r = –0.986), indicating top-down control by predatory flagellates, bacteria vs. naked amoebae (r = –0.361) and bacteria vs. testate amoebae (r = –0.131), each of decreasing magnitude as would be predicted for higher level consumers. Estimates of bacterial predation indicated strong predatory pressures on bacteria by the protozoa, greater with C-supplementation compared to the non-supplemented treatments.

Opis:
The aim of this project was to monitor the temporal growth of the urban areas, on the example of the Krakow city (Poland). In recent years more frequent use of satellite data in environmental monitoring can be observed. Definitely the optical data are the most popular type of it. This kind of data are commonly used in many applications like land cover change detection, biomass study and in the map preparation process. Despite their many advantages they are very sensitive on the weather conditions. Thus they cannot be gathered in cloudy or rainy day. This case doesn’t occur when the satellite SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) system are used. The ability of SAR and optical systems in monitoring the temporal growth of the urban areas were presented in the past (Al Rawashdeh & Saleh 2006, Opido & Leśniak 2015). In these projects SAR and optical satellite systems were compared. The study presented here was performed on fifty archival SAR and optical images acquired between years 1992 and 2010. The images were grouped into five two-year time intervals. Each interval contains data stack of eight SAR and 2 Landsat images. For each group the analysis of land cover was performed. Each optical image was classified into three following classes: water, urban and green areas. The study of the SAR data was based on the analysis of coherent scatterers (Porzycka-Strzelczyk & Strzelczyk 2015). The most commonly used methods of coherent scatterer’s identification were tested: dispersion of amplitude, Log-Cumulant (Nicolas et al. 2004), Signal-to-cluter ratio (Ulander et al. 2010) and coherency method (Touzi 1999). The growth of the urban area was calculated by studying changes in the numbers of coherent scatterers on the SAR images. For the Landsat images changes in the area of the urban class were analyzed. Furthermore, regions of most and least intensive urban growth were detected. The next step of the project is to compare the presented results with those provided by new ESA (European Space Agency) satellites. Sentinel-1 provides SAR images with a much better spatial resolution than ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat satellites. Sentinel-2 has better spatial resolution and more spectral bands than Landsat-8 (Masek 2015). This will allow to achieve more precise maps of coherent scatterers.

Interest in the use of biomass for energy has increased significantly in the last few years. The latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change highlights the influence mankind has had on the climate: an unprecedented increase in GHG levels in the last 800,000 years and a rise of 40% in CO2 concentrations since pre-industrial times. The challenge now is to find energy alternatives, and in this context, one important option is bioenergy, one of the most important energy sourcesof the future. In light of this, the goal of this paper was to assess the sustainable potential of woodfuel resources in Italy using WISDOM methodology. WISDOM, developed by the FAO, has been applied in many countries around the world. From this study, at national level, household consumption was at 19.3 Mt in 2003 (averagevalue), while the potential supply of woody biomass (productivity) was 24.9 Mt(average value), with a surplus of almost 6 million tons between household consumption and productivity. This study represents an advance in knowledge of the biomass potential for energy use in Italy, and, as such, is subject to possible future improvement. Forest bioenergy development creates good opportunities to mobilize the production potential of European forests, and to contribute to a more climate-friendly, bio-based economy.

Hampangen Education Forest (HEF) has great potential in terms of carbon stock, biodiversity, and contribution to the local community’s livelihood. In the future, it is planned to develop its role in climate change mitigation; thus, valid and updated information regarding climate regulation services are required. The purpose of this study was to assess the above ground biomass (AGB) at different canopy densities of swamp secondary forest in (HEF) and estimated the total AGB stored in this area. The research was carried out from April 2022 until July 2022. The data collected included tree diameter at breast height (DBH), tree total height, the weight of litter, and understorey vegetation. All the information was collected using two types of observation plots (400 m2 and 0.25 m2) and AGB was calculated using allometric equations. This research found that the average AGB at sparse, medium, and dense canopy cover was 70.46 Mg.ha-1, 80.94 Mg.ha-1, and 145.03 Mg.ha-1, respectively. The total AGB stored in HEF was 367,180.08 Mg (tonnes) and equivalent to above-ground carbon stock of 172,574.64 Mg carbon. The finding of this research suggests that HEF needs conservation strategies to improve its carbon stock and conserve biodiversity.

Opis:
FAO AquaCrop model ver. 6.1 was calibrated and validated by means of an independent data sets during the harvesting seasons of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, at El Noubaria site in western north of Egypt. To assess the impact of the increase in temperature and CO2 concentration on potato biomass and tuber yield simulations, experiments were carried out with four downscaled and bias-corrected of General Circulation Models (GCMs) data sets based on the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) scenarios under demonstrative Concentration Trails (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5, selected for 2021–2040 and 2041–2060. The study showed that the model could satisfactorily simulate potato canopy cover, biomass, harvest and soil water content under various irrigation treatments. The biomass and yield decreased for all GCMs in both future series 2030s and 2050s. Biomass reduction varied between 5.60 and 9.95%, while the reduction of the simulated yield varied between 3.53 and 7.96% for 2030. The lowest values of biomass and yield were achieved by HadGEM2-ES under RCP 8.5 with 27.213 and 20.409 Mg∙ha–1, respectively corresponding to –9.95 and –7.96% reduction. The lowest reductions were 5.60 and 3.53% for biomass and yield, respectively, obtained with MIROC5 under RCP 8.5 for 2030. Reductions in biomass and yield in 2050 were higher than in 2030. The results are showing that higher temperatures shortened the growing period based on calculated growing degree days (GDD). Therefore, it is very important to study changing sowing dates to alleviate the impact of climate change by using field trials, simulation and deep learning models.

Opis:
The authors provide hard evidence for a significant environmental impact of long-distance atmospheric pollution advection to the Arctic. Results from literature and of their research show that the atmospheric inflow of pollution to the Arctic has been increasing over the decades. The authors show evidence that biomass burning has a greater potential impact on radiative budget of the region than the well-known spring Arctic Haze phenomenon, which has always been regarded as the most prominent atmospheric pollution manifestation in the Arctic. Warming, which is observed in the Arctic, results in decreasing ice coverage of the region, which in turn, leads to the major changes in the ecosystem, hence affects human well-being. At the same time, the authors present results of two independent studies, dedicated to the recognition of the awareness and the level of interest of people in eight Arctic countries and among young learners in Poland. The results show that not only the level of public interest is low, but it is both decreasing or, at the best, low to societies. This is in strong contradiction to information available and the daily experience of the societies, which inhabit the region. The authors believe, that such contradiction results from a low level of knowledge and interest of the Arctic and the climate change itself. Finally, the authors provide some hints on how to link hard scientific evidence for Arctic environmental changes with proper communication to the general public, and hence to increase the level of interest among citizens.

Differential biomass and carbon stocks were investigated in vegetation of natural and artificial ecosystems in Akwa Ibom State. Three vegetation plots were used for each site. In each plot, three belt transects were laid and in each transect, vegetation were sampled systematically in ten 10 m × 10 m quadrat. Vegetation variables such as DBH, height of species were measured while their ages were estimated. The biomass and carbon stocks of species were estimated standardized allometric functions. The result revealed a total of 15, 30, 19 and 19 species in the mangrove, forest, arboretum and orchard, respectively. The biomass allocation in the various woody species components followed this decreasing order; stem > branches > leaves. The standing biomass in the ecosystems followed this decreasing order; forest (179.14 tons) > arboretum (53.94 tons) mangrove (33.03 tons) > orchard (17.14 tons). The carbon stock in the vegetation also followed this decreasing order: forest (89.65 tons) > arboretum (28.51 tons) > mangrove (16.52 tons) > orchard (8.57). Species such as Elaeis guineensis (in mangrove), Coula edulis (in forest), Temarindus indica (in arboretum) and Anacardium occidentalis (in orchard) had the highest values for biomass and sequestered carbon while species such as Alchornea cordifolia (in mangrove), Maesoboytra dusenii (in forest), Rauwolfia vomitoria (in arboretum) and Anthocleista vogelli (in orchard) had the least standing biomass and sequestered carbon. Conclusively, these results have practical implications in environmental monitoring and management, afforestation, forest protection and conservation, climate change and global warming.

W pracy przedstawiono parametry, określające możliwości adaptacji drzewostanów świerkowych do bieżących i prognozowanych warunków klimatycznych na obszarze leśnego kompleksu promocyjnego - Lasy Beskidu Śląskiego. Opisano związek przyrostu miąższości świerka i produkcji biomasy z warunkami klimatycznymi. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników sporządzono diagramy produkcyjności siedlisk dla świerka, zgodnie z normą klimatyczną 1951-2000 oraz według zaproponowanych scenariuszy na 2100 r.
The paper presents parameters estimating possible adaptation of the spruce tree stands to present and predicted climatic conditions in the Beskid Śląski Mts. The data come from measurements made in the years 1951-2010 at 25 meteorological stations and posts situated in the Beskid Śląski region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of climate variability on the stability of a spruce stand in lower subalpine forest zone of the Beskid Śląski. The work includes studies on the possibility of adaptation of spruce forest to present and future climate in the Western Beskids. The study used historical data and a series of meteorological data generated with the model WGEN_K (KUCHAR 2005) of a time range of 100 years. Calculation procedure based on two scenarios of CO2 concentration increase of 130% and 200% by the year 2050. The relationship between productive potential and biomass production of spruce stands and climatic conditions was described. Doubling the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, and a rise of mean air temperature to 9°C, at reduced rainfall in the summer time clearly resulted in the deterioration of productive conditions in lower subalpine mountain zone of the Beskid Śląski.

Phytoplankton community structure was studied from 2002 to 2016 in the Vistula Lagoon (southern Baltic Sea) in the context of the 2010 shift in its population, as well as the reason for this shift and its environmental impact. This evident shift was indicated by Multidimensional Scaling at the Bray Curtis similarity level of 31%. Before 2010, the primary components of phytoplankton were Cyanobacteria (up to 98% of the biomass, October 2007) and Chlorophyta (40%, July 2002). After 2010, the contribution of Cyanobacteria considerably decreased, and the proportions of other phyla increased. The total phytoplankton biomass positively correlated with phosphorus, and Cyanobacteria biomass with silica. Evident changes were also observed in the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton. Before 2010, the highest values of biomass occurred in autumn, and were related to high biomass of Cyanobacteria. Higher biomass has been recently reached in spring, during the dominance of Ochrophyta associated with Chlorophyta, Charophyta, and Cryptophyta. Generalised additive models showed a significant decreasing trend of the total phytoplankton biomass, Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, and flagellates, suggesting a decrease in eutrophication. This trend is concurrent with a considerable increase in the ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass since 2010. The increased ratio, however, did not result from elevated zooplankton biomass, but from the drop in phytoplankton biomass. Therefore, the most probable reason for the decrease in phytoplankton biomass was the simultaneous decrease in the concentration of all nutrients. The potential additional impact of filtration by a new alien bivalve Rangia cuneata G. B. Sowerby I, 1832 is also discussed.

The paper presents the analysis of changes in weed infestation in spring barley cultivated in the years 1990–2004 in crop rotation with a 25% proportion of this cereal (potato – spring barley – sowing peas – winter triticale), when it was grown after potato, and in crop rotation with its 75% proportion (potato – spring barley – spring barley – spring barley), when it was grown once or twice after spring barley. In the experiment, no weed control was applied. Every year in the spring (at full emergence of the cereal) and before the harvest, the composition of weed species and weed density of particular weed species were determined, and before the harvest also their biomass. Weed density increased linearly on all plots during the 15-year period. The average values confirm the increase in weed biomass in the case when spring barley was grown once or twice after this crop; however, those differences were influenced by the previous situation only during some seasons. Weed density and biomass showed high year–to–year variability and a positive correlation with the amount of precipitation and a negative correlation with temperature during the period of the study. A negative correlation between the yield of barley and weed biomass was shown.

The present research deals with carbon sequestration, as an important process for mitigating the effects of climate change. The investigation focuses on a 30-year period and it covers only aboveground biomass that builds up from natural forest regrowth, excluding any plantation techniques. Potential carbon sequestration rate from natural forest regrowth in Godech Municipality was measured in Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and the resolution of the map was 1x1 km. The results of the study display that carbon accumulation values in the researched area were consistent with those that were expected in the largest parts of Bulgaria. The biggest share of Godech Municipality falls within the range of 0.82 – 0.96 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ with restricted areas around the villages of Barlya, Smolcha, Gubesh, Murgash and Varbnitsa that may accumulate between 0.96 – 1.11 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. In conclusion, carbon accumulation only from natural forest regrowth provides representative information, however it would have been better if different plantation techniques were regarded as well. The successful results of the investigation should encourage other studies of this type in the neighbouring municipalities.

Opis:
Obserwujemy obecnie szóste, plejstoceńsko-holoceńskie wielkie wymieranie. Jednym z istotnych czynników przyczyniających się do dramatycznego spadku różnorodności dzikiej fauny i flory są zmiany klimatu. Ludzkość podjęła walkę ze zmianami klimatu w 1992 roku, kiedy to w trakcie Szczytu Ziemi w Rio de Janeiro przyjęto Ramową Konwencję Narodów Zjednoczonych w sprawie Zmian Klimatu. Niestety efektów tych wysiłków nie widać. Wzrost emisji gazów cieplarnianych doprowadzi do wymarcia połowy gatunków na Ziemi do końca wieku. Ograniczenie wzrostu temperatury do 2°C (w stosunku do ery przedindustrialnej) do 2100 roku oznaczać będzie zmniejszenie różnorodności gatunkowej o 25%. Naukowcy przestrzegają, że jeśli nie podejmiemy natychmiastowych działań, czeka nas katastrofalna utrata różnorodności biologicznej. Dzikie zwierzęta kręgowe już dzisiaj stanowią zaledwie 4% biomasy wszystkich kręgowców, dramatycznie niewiele w porównaniu z biomasą zwierząt hodowlanych.
We are currently observing the sixth Pleistocene-Holocene great extinction. Climate change is one of the significant factors contributing to the dramatic decline in wildlife diversity. Humanity took up the fight against climate change in 1992 by adopting the Framework Convention on Climate Change at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit. Unfortunately, these efforts have not produced the expected results. Rising greenhouse gas emissions will lead to the extinction of half of the species on Earth by the end of this century. Limiting the temperature increase to 2°C by 2100 will mean a 25% reduction in species diversity. For most animal species, the race against progressive climate change is difficult and even impossible to win. Scientists warn that if we do not take immediate action, we will face a catastrophic loss of biodiversity. Wild vertebrate animals already account for no more than 4% of the biomass of all vertebrates, which is dramatically lower than the biomass of farmed animals.
